I live in a coastal region that receives high levels of moisture and humidity on a daily basis. To top it off, my house has bathrooms which have no ventilation, so we've often had to deal with mold problems. The answer to my problems arrived in the form of a small box-shaped dehumidifier called "Eva Dry".

This device works tremendously well, pulling moisture out of the air at a reasonable rate. The 16oz reservoir takes about one week to fill up, when I leave it running constantly. I use it in my bathroom mainly, but once in a while my bedroom will feel damp, and it handles the 12'x14' space just as effectively as it does the bathroom. My only complaint is that it's not nearly as quiet as I thought it would be, and the power cord is kind of bulky for bathroom use; I have to tuck it all away someplace, and my only outlets are on the counter, so that's a bit aggravating. The product loses one star for that.

I recommend this to anyone who has ventilation problems and needs to be rid of excess moisture in small to medium sized spaces.

fan is not quiet enough to run all night in bedroom.

Dehumidifying a bedroom is a problem If you get a typical dehumidifier, the compressor is so loud that you can't run it at night. So you only run during the day, and hope things aren't too clammy by morning. The Eva-Dry sounds promising: By using a thermoelectric cooler, it avoids the noisy compressor, and thus offers the potential to run all night without the noise problem.

Unfortunately, the fan on the eva-dry is so noisy that you can't run it all night, and the cooler is so weak that even with two of them they don't dry the air enough to just run them during the day. So it was a of no use to me.

This product is *only* useful for dehumidifying a *very* small area (closet, bathroom) that is *very* humid. Many of the reviews said this very thing, but I took a chance that two of them would accomplish something. The loud fan was an additional unpleasant surprise.

Thumbs up to Amazon for the easy return policy. I was able to try out this idea with minimal hassle.

I bought the Eva dehumidifier a little less than 2 years ago and it seemed to work great. I had it in an average size bedroom. It was fairly quiet and it was just the right size for my needs, as it would fill up after about 4 days. It shut off when full so no worries and was really simple & quick to empty. I was surprised at how much water it actually would accumulate it holds a pint. I put a little hand towel under it just in case but there was never any significant leaking. On a wood nightstand, I just didn't want any moisture damage to the wood and there never was.

I would have given the product 5 stars if it had lasted a couple more years but it didn't. I know it didn't cost a lot but I think things should last a little longer than 2 yrs and now when I go looking for a new one, I have to assume I'm paying $50 for something that will work < 2 yrs and contribute to our landfills.

I started looking for a new product and I'm sad to say that the reviews for comparable are not very good. In fact, I noticed the same problem in reviews for other brands but those brands didn't even last a year! It seems to have been the same problem; one day the thing just doesn't turn back on. Mine got full so it automatically shut off. After I emptied it, it didn't turn back on. I waited a few days with it unplugged, I made sure the plug connection was good but it still doesn't turn on. Reading other brand reviews though, it seems those stopped working within days or a few months. Maybe I should be happy almost 2 yrs?

I liked the size, ease of use and fairly quiet fan, plus it didn't look that bad or bulky sitting on a nightstand. Maybe mine was a lemon and another one would last longer. I hope so because I haven't found anything better and even if I pay for a better quality, more reliable product, I haven't found one which has all the positive attributes this one had.

I should add that this unit just sat there and never had any misuse. It didn't get dropped, knocked over nor did it experience any power surges. There are many other things I own that go through abuse and I would be surprised if they lasted 2 yrs but this one I would have expected a little bit longer life from.

Again, it may have been an unlucky fluke for me but you may want to consider when buying that it may not last 2 yrs. Hope this is helpful.

Honest reviews on Eva-dry Electric Petite Dehumidifier

Being an engineer and technician I have no problem with these little devices.

They all are cold on one side and hot on the other side of the device.

They all have a little cheap fan running to remove heat from the hot side.

Without that fan they will not work!

Changing the fan is easy and cheap versis throwing away a solid state device that is working fine, just in need of the fan.

You can get these fans in most electronic stores. You can buy them all over the Internet.

You might even find one that will fit it in a computer store like Fry's etc.

These fans last a year or two and the bearings lock up.

Don't throw away a $50.00 item for a $5 to $10 fan.

I bought this for the small bathroom attached to our bedroom. We have paneling on the walls and was horrified when I discovered small mold spores growing in one of the creases of the paneling. We have an exhaust fan, but unless we run it all day, it's not enough. Our inspector recommended opening the window during our showers, but I can't handle a cold draft during my shower. So.....this was the perfect solution. Within three days, the tray was almost full. We leave the door to our bathroom open and cannot hear the unit running at night. It really is very quiet. I've already thought of taking it downstairs and using it in a closet that has a musty smell to see how it works. Just a fantastic product for such a compact size.

The advertisement for this product was very well written, describing a product that is far from what you get.

The humidifier is NOISY on the lowest setting. If you put it on the high setting it sounds like a FREIGHT TRAIN is coming. Also, I have had it three weeks and the filters are disgusting already and needs constant cleaning. I requested Amazon directions on how to return this product. Very UNSATISIFIED with this purchase.

Went through three humidifiers then i found this one. It lasted the longest out of all of the humidifiers I have tried. I just change the filter when it gets dirty and its worth it. It is not easy to clean, but I suggest a little bleach in the water once a week, just to prevent it from getting moldy or musty.

I purchased this ultrasonic humidifier a year ago for my two boys, who seem to always be congested either with colds or seasonal allergies or due to the dry air from our A/C. Prior to having this one, we went through a couple humidifiers (either warm or cool mist) a season because they either broke down, didn't do a good enough job, leaked, or were too difficult to clean. This humidifier works like a DREAM and is so very VERY easy to clean. I love that I can turn the dial to output the desired amount of mist. It's super quiet, too. I know others have said they've had problems with theirs being too noisy or becoming noisy after awhile, but I have not experienced that problem. I've also read that some complain about the demineralization cartridge not working for as long as stated or costing too much. I can agree and sympathize there, but folks...you don't have to buy that cartridge. Just use distilled water. It does the same job, and you can pick up the gallong jugs from your grocery store. While this humidifier IS easy to clean, the manufacturer recommends you do clean the water tank every two to three weeks as well as the water inlet and ultrasonic nebulizer, which are behind a panel that pops off. Don't forget that little bit of maintenance; it's important. I have to say, I LOVE that there are no mold issues with this humidifier compared to other cheaper ones I have used. All in all, after having gone through a multitude of humidifiers before purchasing this one I would recommend it hands down. Best humidifier purchase yet!

With winter upon us, my wife and I initially bought a standard humidifier that boils the water into a warm vapor. It worked well at getting the air "moist" and raising the temperature of the room a bit but having to refill AND clean the thing on almost a daily basis was way too annoying. It also made a small, but decent amount of noise when the water was bubbling. In the end, the tank got a small crack which threw off the pressure, so it leaked everywhere.

Fast forward to our new Sharper Image humidifier. Filled up the tank, plugged it in, and instantaneous mist! I probably played with the thing for 5min just amazed at the ultrasonic technology. There literally is just a tiny plate that vibrates with such a high frequency that it creates this misty, fog like stream of vapor. The different level settings work out well to it's not a simply high, med, low it's a turn dial so it's easy to get it at the exact output you're looking for. We've found that a mid-high level will keep the bedroom at a nice humidity and the tank lasts about 3-4 days (running only at night). Noise level is almost silent. The best part? The inside doesn't get a disgusting since it's ultrasonic so no more daily cleaning! After a month of use I opened the thing up to scrub it down, and there was barely any residue or film to clean. The negatives? You will get the "white dust" around the room if you don't put demineralization tablets in a on monthly basis, and having a cool mist can be a little chilling in the winter until your heating catches up with it. All in all we highly recommend this humidifier.

The GOOD:

-Super quiet

-Tank lasts 3-4 days when run at night, med level

-Minimal to no cleaning required

-Keeps our air humid but not saturated

-Very customizable level

-Night light for the kids

The BAD:

-Need demineralization tablets or white dust becomes a problem

-Cool mist in winter is brisk

-Nasty green sticker on the front is ugly and takes time to take off

I bought this at Bed, Bath and Beyond in October for use after sinus surgery. Initially, is was silent, but after about 12 nights of use, started making a whirring fan noise which is disturbing when you are trying to sleep. Turned it on one night and the noise was so loud (like an electric lawn mower sound), I returned it to the store and they gave me another one. Last night, I turned the new one on and it was silent for about 1 hour, then the new one started making the whirring noise. This is not acceptable so I will give The Sharper Image one more chance as I really do like the mist it throws off. I am returning the 2nd one this weekend and will get a 3rd. Hope this one works as stated in the advertising. My daughter has the same model and has had no problems with it for the 4 or so months she's had it.

Honest reviews on The Sharper Image EV-HD10 Cool Mist Ultrasonic 1-Gallon Humidifier

Humidifiers seems to only last one season in my house but are almost a requirement for my family's allergies. We've had Honeywells, Holmes and Crane models. They have all been insanely hard to clean, noisy and/or difficult to fill. I couldn't be happier with the Sharper Image model!

1. The light has a nice glow to it for a good night-light in my daughter's room. It can be turned off though for the master bedroom where we don't want an extra light while we're trying to sleep.

2. It is very quiet. In my bedroom, it is about 2 feet from my head on my bedside table and I really don't notice it. If I concentrate, I can hear the soft sound of the mist coming out as well as the slightest gurgle now and then (about as loud as gently tapping a key on a computer keyboard 2-3 times).

3. Cleaning has not been an issue. It even came with a demineralizing tab to put in the tank to keep the water from causing a chalky build-up. Water does sit in the base when the tank has emptied, so I try to wipe out the excess every week or so.

4. Though the tank doesn't fit perfectly in the bathroom sink to fill it, it is doable. All of the other ones I've had needed to be filled either in the tub or the kitchen sink.

5. The tank runs all night and into the day at half setting (perfect for a standard bedroom). The box says 8 hours per tank which is probably what it runs when at a higher setting.

6. This was one of the top-rated humidifiers on Consumer Reports. That should tell you something!

I've only been using the first for a month and the second for half that, but I am thrilled. I have a good feeling these will make it completely through the winter and be ready for next year! Highly, highly, highly recommended!

We like this humidifier but are discouraged at the price of the cartridges, which must be replaced every 30-40 fillings. $20 a cartridge is expensive. They keep the machines from building up minerals on the inside.

Each filter is wrapped in plastic shrink wrap only and they are not identified as a Honeywell product. They appear to be an after-market item being sold as OEM.

Also, the filters came with minimal packaging protection and the corners are slightly damaged but still usable.

I have a Microbiology background so I am picky with my air purifiers. This Luma Comfort model has all the features you need

I picked this up a few weeks ago, just as my allergies started to act up again. I was looking for the best bang for my buck, but with my background I also wanted quality.

What's really great about this unit are all the different filters and UV light. The HEPA seems high quality, and the activated carbon is so great to have I won't go into the chemistry behind it, but it makes a huge difference in air quality. Throw in the UV light, and you have a high end air purifier.

It's nice and quiet on the lower settings, but on high it does sound like a fan running on high, obviously. The only thing I would change is adding a remote control. It would be nice to turn it on from the other end of the room. Other than that, this is a steal.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I use this on a relatively small area. Obviously, with a 400 SQ ft cleaning capacity, it's not a whole house purifier. It's better suited for one large room or multiple adjacent smaller sized rooms combined to 400 sq ft. I use it in my living room and close the doors to all other rooms when in use. You must run the unit with all doors and windows closed for it to be effective. The unit is small and relatively quiet. It can easily be stuck in a corner without being too obtrusive. It runs quiet on low and pretty quiet on medium fan speeds. The high fan speed is moderately loud but still quieter than most box or window fans sound at high setting. The purifier has touch sensitive controls instead of hard buttons. It comes pre-assembled with the filters already in place, however, you must open the unit to remove the plastic wrapping from the filters. The replaceable filters have a rated effective life of six months to a year, with the exception of the carbon filter which is rated 60-90 days. The amount of use and pollutants in the environment, such as heavy dust or pet dander, affect filter life. It also has a UV light for killing mold spores and certain bacteria. The UV light can be turned on or off as desired.

Thanks to higher than average temperatures for most of September, I haven't had many opportunities to close the windows due to the heat and need for fresh air. I have fall allergies, so when the temperatures finally dropped, I could not wait to run the purifier more regularly. I primarily run it during the day while I'm at work and overnight while sleeping. Although my fall allergies don't seem quiet as bad as normal this year, in the interest of full disclosure I've also been taking a new much more effective allergy medication since spring. The one thing I have noticed is less lingering odors, especially from the pup. I don't know if it's the dander being removed or what, but it seems to keep the area where we keep our pup crated smelling a bit more neutral instead of doggy-like.

The true test will come in the spring when my allergies hit full blast and even the new and improved allergy meds aren't able to cut it alone. I'm hoping the Luma will give me that little extra edge if we track pollen or other irritants into the living room. Other than that, I'm satisfied with the ease of setup, use, quietness, size and what effectiveness I've been able to observe so far.

Best Deals for Luma Comfort AP400W HEPA Air Purifier with 5-Stage Advanced Air

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This unit has multi-stage filtering, with separate filters for odors, bacteria, etc. The final UV stage will control bacteria and is a very welcome addition to this filter. There are five filter stages, so you will get a good, clean air output with this purifier. There are indicators to let you know when the filters need to be changed, so you will always be able to keep the purifier at peak performance.

The filter stages are: HEPA filter, carbon pre-filter, UV light, TiO2 filter and VOC filter

I set this up in my parents' house to test it out, as they use purifiers and were not completely satisfied with their units. This unit is extremely quiet on the slower settings, so it will not create a lot of noise if you don't want to hear it. The sound is a bit louder (somewhat like a fan) if you turn it up to the highest setting, but it is still not bad.

Noise Level (dB): 57.2/51.6/48.6

Dimensions: 22.2" x 9.9" x 18.6"

Weight: 18.5 lbs

Power: 110V-120V / 60 Hz / 100W

Coverage Area: Up to 400 square feet

Adjustable Timer: 1-7 hours

Warranty: 1 year

The manual for the unit can be found on the manufacturer's website at: http://www.lumacomfort.com/manuals/Luma-Air-Purifier-Manual.pdf

Honest reviews on Luma Comfort AP400W HEPA Air Purifier with 5-Stage Advanced Air

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program We've got this set up in our bedroom. It is quiet enough to not bother us while we sleep. The various speeds help deal with different issues like wet dog smell or bursts of pollen. My partner isn't a germ-o-phobe, but he is aware of germs. The ultraviolet light has given him a nice sense of comfort.

A warning: A couple of the filters come wrapped in plastic, so be sure you go through them to remove those layers before using. Also, one of those filters is a carbon filter. It is a bit messy, so handle carefully unless black powder doesn't bother you.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I wanted an air purifier when my family and I moved into an ever-so-musty new home. A week after that, my parents had a bit of a basement flood. So I tested this unit in both situations and am quite pleased with the results. The new home no longer had the musty smell after only a couple of days, and this gave significant improvement to the smell of the flooded basement. I really felt the air in both situations was significantly cleaner. The unit is also easy to use with customization options in both power and time, which is handy. This is a fairly basic purifier, nothing terribly fancy, so those looking for a lot more bells, whistles, and wild results might want to look elsewhere, but I found it great for basic usages, though on its highest level its noisier than other purifiers I've seen/heard. I've noticed other reviewers commenting the highest level of sound isn't bad, but it does bother me. It's attractive in its white simplicity and the shape makes this very space-friendly.

Every Christmas I start my holiday shopping trying to find that special gift for my inlaws [who seem to have everything]. This year I was thinking something with soothing sounds, or maybe an aromatherapy machine--but nothing grabbed me. Then I spotted this diffuser on amazon. It's beautiful and larger than it looks online, so it's pretty solid.

I wasn't able to be there for Christmas (they live out-of-state) but my husband tells me the water reservoir is easy to fill and it puts out a strong mist. Just a few drops of oil keep the house fragrant for hours. The changing colors add a nice touch, too. The only thing missing is the option to set it on one of the cycling pre-programmed sounds and keep it there.

would have given it 5 stars but there is no turn off feature, just have to unplug it. There is a pricier model that has a remote control but it costs $100 more. I love that it runs for 6 plus hours and there is no chance of causing a fire unlike the tea candle diffusers.

This is the best humidifier I ever owned. Unlike others, this one has a long snout that shoots the moisture upwards from the height, reducing the fallout in immediate vicinity, no wet carpet with this one. It's also very quiet, not whisper quiet but comfy quiet. The output even on the lowest "SLOW" setting is generous enough for my biggest bedroom.

Aromatherapy feature works GREAT: adding a few drops of an essential oil transforms the whole aura of the place.

I uploaded a ton of pictures with notes, check them out. I am a lousy photoghrapher, those pictures lack luster but they show you everything you may want to know about this model.

That said, there are a couple design features showed in the pictures:

1. The snout has the tip wrapped insidewards, forming a pocket of plastic. This causes backflux: condensate accumulates on the tip and flows back. Too much condensate, the unit shuts down. You have to take the hood off, shake the water out, dry it out a bit before replacing it and restarting the unit. To prevent this from happening, do not unplug the unit immediately after you turn it off. After you turn the unit off by pressing the button, the fan keeps running (humming) for about 2 minutes more, to clean up any moisture accumulated in the hood. Unplug the unit after the fan stops naturally and you should be fine.

2. The on/off button placed on the bottom, not the most comfortable place unless you park the unit up on a nightstand.

3. The air inlet on the bottom does not allow the unit to be placed directly on a carpet, it has to rest on a hard flat surface. As it shows on my pictures, I opted for a 3rd party plastic tray.

That said, still, even at this price, I bought the second one for another bedroom and will buy one more for my home office.

Out of 2 units I ordered, 1 turned out defective: it was much louder than the good one and the area around the button was strangely hot. I contacted the manufacturer, they are processing replacement for free.

Up north, the winters are dry despite the snow, so my husband and I like to have a humidifier in the bedroom. I've always hated the way they looked, but it was an ugly necessity. But now, this little number has solved the problem. It's beautiful and runs silent, filling the room with just the right amount of moisture. Keep in mind it has a limited water reservoir, so it has to be refilled nightly, and is made for a smaller space, such as a bedroom. It has settings for different levels of humidity and alerts you when the water tank is empty. Well made, durable, and handsome!

First off, this is NOT an air conditioner. If you expect your room to be freezing cold, this is not the product for you. It's a COOLER, and it does its job very well. It works by evaporating water. Try soaking a T-shirt, wringing it out, and putting it on wet to get the effect. It doesn't work very well in humid areas, but it works GREAT where the air is dry.

I'm in southern California, where the humidity varies pretty widely. I place the cooler six or eight feet from my chair, and on the hottest days I'm quite comfortable.

Benefits:

* it's about 1/5 the cost of an air conditioner

* operating expense is a fraction of the cost of air conditioning

* neat features! (timer, sleep function, etc.)

* remote control

Drawbacks:

* it's not freezing cold like air conditioning.

Low price, very effective in low humidity. Has a strong fan when not using the cooling feature. Timer works well. Has an oscillating feature, a "sleep" mode and, most importantly: a drain plug, washable filter element and a plastic body that cannot rust like those made of sheet metal or tin.

It's been in the high 90s to the low 100's here in the San Fernando Valley in CA with low humidity and it's kept whatever room it is in cool enough to not have to turn on the AC.

It's no air conditioner, but it's a low in cost [to purchase and to run]alternative you could even say was an "eco-friendly" way to stay comfortable in the summer. But then, my friends had to talk me out of buying a wringer washing machine, so my opinion is based on my personal preference for simplicity and old fashioned ways of doing things.

Take my review as you will. It does what it says it will. If you have frequent high humidity, it won't be effective and the company tells you that so be forewarned. I find it to be a great buy and it runs quietly as well.

This is a FABULOUS product. I based my purchase on the reviews of this item. I had a similar product a few years ago and it doesnt compare to this as well as the other one being almost double this price. The cooler came a day PRIOR to the estimated delivery date.WOW........I live in Acampo California which is north of Lodi CA and south of Sacramento CA. The degrees outside at 5:40 pm is 93 degrees, the temperature inside of the house is 84 degrees and my bedroom (which is where I have my cooler) is 72 degrees. I use a pitcher of ice water from my fridge to fill it up and ice cubes in the top tray. For those of you that are young or have not had the experience of a "swamp cooler", they tend to have a musty smell to them. I solved this problem by purchasing a Glade Car oil fragrencer(?). It is intended to clip on the vents of your heating/air conditioning unit. I clip mine on the bottem lever of the cooler on the lowest setting and it gives off a slight fragrance with no musty smell whatsoever. My hats off to the seller, Amazon for carrying the product and the reviews that allowed me to purchase the best product out there. Happy Happy Happy!!!!

Honest reviews on SPT Evaporative Air Cooler

After reading conflicting reviews I was thoroughly confused, yet I was so desperately hot I took a chance on this product. Here is the true skinny on this portable cooling unit.

I live in Colorado. The humidity has ranged from 30 to 88%, the temperature 84-93 degrees. I filled the unit with 2 gallons of cold water from the frig and 2 trays of ice cubes. It absolutely blew cool air, even after the ice melted and the water reached room temperature it still blew cool air. Don't bother checking a thermometer it DOES NOT cool an entire room, no matter how small, it cools the AREA you point it at.

If you sit at the computer or any other stationary position, place the unit within 7 feet, and point it in your direction you will be cooled.

As for the humidity, this is a problem only in a room with no air circulation.

I pointed the unit at my bed and was quite comfortable, even chilly. However, in this room I have only a small table fan and the windows are closed, so within 45 minutes I was suffocating from the humid air.

In the living room where I have 2 ceiling fans and 2 box fans-one in front of the half opened door, either turned to blow air in or flipped to pull air outI have had NO issues with humidity, even at 88%.

It beeps to let you know when the water level is low. It is easy to put handfuls of ice cubes in the tank but I found it really wasnt necessary. Pouring in the water is easy as well, but if you dont hold the little door open it will sometimes close leaving you pouring water onto your floor! I havent had to clean it yet, but the filter is easily accessible. It's no louder than a box fan and wheels around smoothly. I wish the unit were a bit taller and the blower area a bit larger but these are my only negatives.

Overall, I got what I wanted. I no longer sit at my desk with wet rags on my head, miserable and hot. I dont have to stick something in my window, or spend hundreds for central AC. If you want a cool room, look for something else. If you want to be cool in a stationary location, and you have good air circulation this will work for you.

We live in the heart of the desert in Nevada, and bought this as a way to cool individual rooms in the house vs. letting the central air cool the whole house. Why bother cooling the whole house when the family is together in one room for long periods of time?

We have a thermometer and hydrometer in the primary room we use it in. The room is about 400 sq ft. and we run it for hours. For coolness, it only gives us a 1-degree temp difference; sometimes 2-degrees with ice cold water, and ice cubes in both the main water chamber and top of unit.

The big difference we notice is with the humidity. We run about 20% humidity in the room normally. With this unit, it increases to 35-40% humidity. This helps with the dryness and with our allergies/asthma.

Overall, we use it more as a humidifier, but it does help us to increase the thermostat a few degrees at night when we run it in the bedroom, which saves a little on energy costs.

My advice is to keep the original cap in case you decide this filter is not for you.

It managed to stop mineral deposits from building up further on the side of the resevoir, but the water gained a musty smell after a 15 gallons/three weeks of use. I sanitize with chlorinated water bi-weekly.

It was especially apparent in warm heated rooms. The risk of bacterial growth outweighs the benefits of the filter for me and I do not recommend this product.

I bought the Crane Penguin humidifier about 2 months ago. The filter arrived about a week later. My experience applies to people using HARD TAP WATER. So far I've found that, although the filter helped with keeping the humidifier a bit cleaner (I clean it once a week with diluted bleach for the tank and vinegar for the base), it only seemed to work to reduce white dust (from hard water minerals) for just over a month, using the humidifier at a low or medium setting. I'm considering using distilled water instead it might work out cheaper than having to replace the filter every couple of months. I would definitely advise to keep the original cap for the tank and try the humidifier with and without filter.

I got a lot of these Crane humidifiers. We have a lot of minerals in our water, so I got these filters. Some of the humidifiers made too much noise to use in a bedroom. They are extremely cute, though, and inexpensive.

I got white dust everywhere even with the filters, even after also using water run through another charcoal filter. If you are serious about these humidifiers, you need to use distilled water. Then you won't need these filters.

About the white dust, I mean literally everywhere, inside the DVD player for instance. I have quit using all of the Crane humidifiers and put them away. I was really sad about this, because they are so cute. They did raise the humidity about 10%. We live in the desert, it is very dry in the winter.

This filter ruined my humidifier which had worked perfectly without it. Here is what happened to me. The humidifier, with filter in place, had been running for a couple of days when I noticed an odd smell upon entering the room. I determined it was coming from the humidifier, so I unplugged it and removed the water tank to take a look. To my shock, the bottom on the humidifier was filled with the amber colored pellets that once were inside the filter. The pellets filled up the area that should have been filled with water. The reservoir had water in it and the unit continued to run, but was overheating because the water wasn't able to flow. The heat damaged (melted) the nebulizer black ring so that the water just leaks right through the bottom now. I am glad that I found out before it caused a fire. Crane customer service has not responded to my email either.

I bought this to use with the Duck Humidifier and it worked perfectly. However I got the Penguin a week later and I think the spring release (to trickle more water) does not work with the Penguin... I think it's not screwing on properly (in spite of trying a thousand times to do so). So if you got the penguin like a lot of folks, be aware this might be a waste of money.

Update: I contacted Crane and the service rep said this was probably a defect with the Penguin Humidifier, and to fill out the warranty card and send the severed power cord (gruesome!) to them and they will mail a replacement.

Update: I mailed them the cord and they, at no charge, shipped me a new Penguin, and it's working perfectly this winter with the filters. I guess the threading on some of the Penguins is off.
