We used to have a Crane duck humidifier (that worked really well) in our toddler's room, but it broke when I dropped it earlier this winter. I bought this Vick's humidifier as a replacement because it "Sanitizes the water with UV Technology while reducing up to 99.9% of bacteria, mold, and spores". This was a big selling point for me, and I thought it would be worth the cost. We have been using this humidifier for 2+ months, and I am very disappointed for the following reasons:

1. We need a humidifier because the winters are very dry here. My son's skin tends to be dry, his nose especially. It does not seem like this humidifier is helping at all. His skin and nose are just as dry. This humidifier puts out "invisible, moisture-balanced air", so it just feels like a cool fan blowing, and you can't actually see the mist. I'm not sure if being able to see (or not see) the mist makes any difference, but something isn't working because it is still too dry in his small room.

2. There are three levels: High (max moisture), Medium (moisture maintenance mode), and Low (sound sleeping mode). So yes, this humidifier is pretty quiet, but only on the "Low" setting. I thought I could just crank it up to "High" to put more moisture in the air, but on that setting the humidifier is too loud and my son is unable to sleep through it. So I tried "Medium", which is a little loud, but still not helping with the dryness. I have tried "High" during the day/"Low" at night, and also "Medium" all the time, but it is still too dry in his room.

3. We use a sound-only baby monitor in our son's room. When the humidifier setting is on "Medium" or "High", we are unable to hear anything through the monitor except the humidifier. It's not that big of a deal for us (because we don't really need to use the monitor for our toddler), but take this into consideration if you are buying this for an infant's room.

4. This 1-gallon tank is supposed to last for up to 24 hours. It does, but only if you leave it on "Low" all of the time. When left on "Medium", it has to be refilled every 16 hours, approximately.

On the plus side, it is easy to fill, and the reservoir does seem to stay cleaner than the Crane did. These are the only reasons that I did not give it 1 star. I really wished that this worked better for us because the idea of a humidifier that helps to reduce the amount of bacteria in the air is really appealing.

When I received this humidifier, I was very pleased with the design, how efficiently it used water, and the fact that the UV light killed 99.9% of the germs. The noise emitted from the humidifier was minimal, but I found the blue light on the dial annoying. Still, that complaint was minor. All things appeared well until I awoke this morning to find that the towel the humidifier was sitting on was soaking wet. I've always been careful with placing a humidifier on furniture and never had a problem with one leaking. That all changed with this unit. Not only do I have a faulty unit, but now the top of my good wood furniture is ruined! I believe this humidifier hasn't been out too long, and I would recommend waiting to purchase it until all the kinks have been worked out!

Bought the Vicks 3900 humidifier (with the UV light) and used it every night. The instructions suggest replacing the filter once every 1-3 months. The filter developed mold and dirty buildup within about 1 month. The unit began to to emit a moldy smell soon after. The humidifier basically becomes a mold growing and spraying unit unless you keep up with cleaning and buying new $12 filters every few weeks.

We have gone through a bunch of humidifiers. This one si great. It isn't totally silent, but quiet enough that our 20 month old sleeps through it. The tank is also one of the easiest I have seen to fill. The filters are relatively cheap. $20 for three at amazon.

We purchased this unit about 6 weeks ago at brick and mortar store. I sure wish we had checked amazon first since we paid $75.00 rather than the $22.00 currently listed at amazon. We were in a pinch, however, and loved the idea that it was germ free and offered some vicks vapor relief for our newborn who was too young for any products directly on or in his little body.

Our baby was a NICU baby and he loves noise, so the high level of this unit was perfect and saved us from having to buy a noise machine. As others have mentioned, the top output level is quite loud, but it was great for us. It will work for 24 hours straight, but only on the low level and the vicks vapopads are only good for 8 hours at a time. Depending on where you shop, they can be hard to find. I went to two different big box stores before I found them and then bought up all that they had.

Fast forward six weeks from purchase--my husband filled the unit last night in preparation for our little one's bedtime. About 15 minutes later, we were sitting downstairs and water began pouring from the light fixture in the dining room. Of course we were startled and went running upstairs to determine where the water was coming from. After a few minutes of investigation (checked the bathrooms first) we discovered that the humidifier had leaked out the entire gallon of water and had seeped down through the floor and then our light fixture. We are currently waiting for things to dry out before trying the light fixture again.

I did notice that the filter looked like it needed to be changed so we have ordered new filters. I cannot say if this would cause the unit to leak. This is the first time it has leaked, but it may be at quite a cost if we have to redo any wiring or replace the light fixture.

I would recommend that you find another product with better reviews. Vicks is a trust brand in our household; it would be nice if they fixed the defect with this unit or replaced those that have leaked on customers.

The advertisement for this product was very well written, describing a product that is far from what you get.

The humidifier is NOISY on the lowest setting. If you put it on the high setting it sounds like a FREIGHT TRAIN is coming. Also, I have had it three weeks and the filters are disgusting already and needs constant cleaning. I requested Amazon directions on how to return this product. Very UNSATISIFIED with this purchase.

Went through three humidifiers then i found this one. It lasted the longest out of all of the humidifiers I have tried. I just change the filter when it gets dirty and its worth it. It is not easy to clean, but I suggest a little bleach in the water once a week, just to prevent it from getting moldy or musty.

I just want to say thanks for having these filters available. I was quite upset that Holmes discontinued them, since the humidifier is one of the best I have ever owned. I will buy from Amazon again but not from Holmes.

September 2013 Update GE did an exchange on the THIRD unit that failed when turned-on May 2013. This time they did not require I "buy" another unit then send in a voucher to claim my money. I picked-up the FOURTH unit at my local dealer on May 10,2013. It lasted until around labor day September 2, 2013. The same failure mode as before. Evaporator coil is not getting cold and the compressor is not running. I'm guessing the refrigerant has again leaked out. This time I also connected my AC Current meter to compare the power draw when it fails as compared to when it's operating. The current draw now is about 2 Amps (running fan ~240 Watts) and when it actually is working and the compressor is running, the current is closer to 6 Amps (~720 Watts). Given the fact that the other three units all lost their refrigerant while sitting idle over the Winter, I have no plans of using my Warranty now to get another (FIFTH) unit to sit around until next Spring. I'll wait until May 1, 2014 to claim number 5. These Dehumidifier failures are ridiculous. When is GE going to wake up and change suppliers or just drop the whole line. Looking at the pile of junk Dehumidifiers sitting in the junk pile at the dealer, this has to be a money loosing product line.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll start this review with the GE ADER65LN Dehumidifier I bought in May 2010 after two other brands failed a few months after their warrenty expired. I had an LG that had its' compressor fail. Repair costs were almost as much as a new one. So I scraped it and bought a Kenmore at Sears. That one lasted as about as long as the LG with another compressor failure. When I looked inside the cabinet I found the Kenmore was made by LG (it turns out most all residential dehumidifier internals are made by Cree in China).

I then researched Consumer Reports and online reviews for the most reliable and best operating dehumidifier. The GE was rated the best so I bought one. I went to use it in May 2011 and guess what? It didn't work. I checked the evaporator coil and it was not getting cold. This time I was still under warrenty so I took it into the dealer for repair. I got a call back and was told the the compressor was bad. Big surprise! GE is giving me a rebate coupon for the price I payed for the unit. I must buy another GE dehumidifier and send a copy of the invoice and the coupon to get my money back. This time I got the "updated" GE ADER65LP.

I'm a graduate engineer that knows a dehumidier is not "rocket science". The reliability of the LG, Kenmore (LG) and GE is terrible. I had a Fedders dehumidifier for 25 years and only replaced it because I needed more capacity. Never had one problem with Fedders, but it was made in the USA!

I'm now on my THIRD GE 65 pint Dehumidifier Failure!!! In June 2012 I had the second dehumidifier fail, the ADER65LP, same failure mode as the ADER65LN. I again carried it back to the dealer's service department and they confirmed the compressor was dead. I received another voucher to send in AFTER I purchased the third GE 65 pint dehumidifier, an ADER65LQ Model. That one lasted all Summer of 2012. I put the unit away for the winter and just took it out today to see if it still worked before the humidity increased during the Summer. Guess what? It doesn't work! I ran the unit for 4 hours in a 70 F Basement room with 60 RH. I checked the evaporator coils and they are not getting cold. The compressor is running and feels hot. I'm guessing the refrigerant has leaked out. I'm taking it in again to the service department, but this is the last time. These China made units are JUNK!

This is a cheap China junk machine with a GE label on it; mine only lasted 1-1/2 years! Just long enough to be out of waranty. My Mom's forty year old, usa made GE model is still running!

Bottom line: Designed to fail! Pay a $1000 and buy a usa model.

Bought this dehumidifier back in April for my new house. Went with a 65 pint unit as the previous owner only ran a 50 pinter. Seemed to work ok out the box, however it seemed to run frequently. It would run for 15-20mins then shut off for 5-10mins before starting again. It would have trouble getting the humidity below 65%, but that was good enough for me & I thought this was due to the size of my basement. Seemed to work ok most of the summer, but now the unit is really struggling seems more & more so. It runs constantly non-stop and can't get the humidity below 80%. It is still removing the water from the air, but not nearly as much as it was. The unit also dripped what appears to be an oil stain on my floor. Its a concrete floor, but the wet spot under it won't go away at all. The coils also keep freezing up no matter how long I let it thaw out. The basement has been a constant 68* this whole time and I regularly clean it. GE's customer service is terrible. All I have been getting is a runaround with them for the past month. They don't really seem to care much about their customers or stand behind their products. Its like a cowardish game to them. Shame really, GE used to be a great brand, but I guess since they sold out to the Chinese they are unable to build quality products or have a real customer service. I guess the only thing I did with purchasing this was give away $200something dollars to the pockets of some greedy business man.

Honest reviews on GE Dehumidifier ADER65LQ

Purchased first one from ABT. It lasted one season. As with others' experience, fan works but no cooling therefore no de-humidification. GE provided credit for purchase of another GE product. Purchased another unit with credit. Again, failed after one season. Also purchased extended warranty. Will use proceeds to purchase non-GE dehumidifier (old and no doubt less efficient Westinghouse dehumidifier still working well after 30 some odd years). Will notify EPA that units are suspected of failing because of refrigerant leakage (illegal to leak CFCs into atmosphere). Will write letter to J. Immelt, head of GE and fellow HBS alum regarding crap product GE is putting out under its name. Outrageous situation.

This is my second dehumidifier from GE. The first one lasted a couple of years, stopped working and was recalled due to fire hazard. The second and third ones lasted 2 years and then also stopped working. The fans and compressors are running, but no longer removes moisture. When they worked they did the job fine, but unless you want to replace every two years, I recommend buyers avoid GE. Had similar experiences with GE washers....but that's another story. One feature I do like is the integrated carry handle which makes it a little bit easier to throw it as far as you can after it prematurely fails.

I don't use this product to clean a humidifier but as a cleaning product. It takes hard water off of any surface like you would not believe. I sprinkle a little of this on on get some on a toothbrush. It bubbles and just eats away the hard water. You can then rub it with the toothbrush and it will general vanish.

Love this stuff, I've been using it to clean sinks, tubs, toilets, etc for many years.

I have a warm mist humidifier (the Vicks UV with 2 water containers, similar to my previous Slant Fin humidifier), and this cleaner is extremely effective. Rather than filling the heating compartment five or six times with vinegar when I clean it once a week (after removing the mineral absorption pad), I can fill the compartment once for a matter of a few minutes and all the hard water residue is gone. My water may be harder than yours.

Unfortunately, the instructions on the bottle say that the product should not be discarded in the sink; it should only be discarded in the toilet. This turns out to be virtually impossible to do. The sink in my bathroom is too small to rinse out the humidifier, so I have to rinse it in the kitchen sink. The warning is not specific enough to tell me what the danger is for putting it down the sink. Does it harm the tadpoles in the sewer, or what? My solution is to run the water in the sink for three or four minutes to minimize whatever the potential is. So I am left to wonder if I'm doing damage to my plumbing. I'm giving only five stars for effectiveness minus one star for uncertainty.

I own this humidifier for 3 years and always cleaned it with warm water and vinigar. Over this time some mineral scaling accumulated on the heating element and inside the tank, and I decided to give it a good cleaning with this "fantastic" product. It did NOTHING! It didn't remove any calcium AT ALL! I've used it as directed and even soaked the element for half an hour nothing!

Extremely disappointed, never buying it again!

Honest reviews on BestAir 1C-6 Humidiclean Extra Strength Humidifier Cleaner 32 oz.

Instruction is not very clear. It says "Use plastic brush to apply", but it does not work that way. You must immerse whole unit with this chemical for a couple of hours to get a good result. Calcium deposit/scale is very tough to remove. I used almost one third of the bottle for cleaning one humidifier. I need to repeat it regularly.

I have a humidifier that has a clear plastic basin that holds the water. Lately it's been getting this weird cloudy hard film that won't scrub off. I just poured this stuff into it and the filmy cloudy hard water buildup vanished. I did take a toothbrush to a few of the hard to reach areas, but with just a couple of passes, the residue was gone. You do have to be careful not to spill it on anything or let it sit too long because it can stain. I did spill some in my tub and sink but I rinsed it right away and it was not a problem. But later I found one little tiny dot that I must have missed and it's stained very lightly though

This is a very nice looking unit. It runs very quietly at it's lowest fan speed and can put out a lot of moisture at it's highest (10) speed. The only drawback we have had is that it is difficult to see the water level. At first we overfilled the unit and had about a quart of water overflow onto our carpeting. At that point we started taking the unit apart (it is 2 pieces) by lifting the outer shell off. We then learned to just use a flashlight to look into the tank with the front filler door open. It comes with an attachment that fits the filler door when open to extend the opening, but we do not use it. It is a lot more convenient to fill versus pulling the tanks out of our old unit. Would buy again.

My wife and I decided to get this humidifier for out upcoming newborn. We live in Arizona, where it's really dry and we read that babies need humidity for their un-adapted skin. When it was delivered, the box was in horrible shape, so I suspected the worst, and I was pretty much right. After getting it out of the box, I noticed the square decorative piece of stone was smashed, and the corners of the top of the unit had markings on it, like they had been folded or something, you know how you take a piece of flimsy plastic and fold it in half, it leaves a mark at the fold that's lighter than the rest of the piece, that's what this looked like. The unit itself is made of plastic, flimsy in my opinion. There is a float inside that attempts to tell the display when the water is low, and that doesn't work all of the time, sometimes it just says it's empty even when it's full, so I had to tape the sensor inside up in this case, so the unit just thinks it's always full, and I check it periodically. There is a door to fill it at the front of the unit, but it's completely worthless, as there's no way to tell when it's full from the door, unless by chance you have the unit plugged in and the sensor happens to work on that occasion when you're filling it, so I just take the whole top of the unit off to fill it. I contacted the company about the broken stone, and they were relatively quick about sending out a new one, so that was one upside. Also, the unit does do its job, it runs when it's supposed to, and keeps the humidity in the house at a healthy level, and it's quiet as long as you don't turn the fan up past level 5. But for the price, I expected better quality, so I'd be hard pressed to recommend this unit to anyone.

My ex is a humidifier person, so I learned from the best. This is a sweet humidifier. Nice and seemingly accurate and well engineered controls, nice marble top and perfect for my purpose. Gets loud once you get into level 5-10. Level 1 is quiet and gets my 12 x 16 master bedroom about 55% (I'm in uber-dry Las Cruces, NM too...) Worth the $.

Honest reviews on Essick Air EP9 500 Whole House Evaporative Digital Pedestal

This is the worst humidifier design. I love Essick brand, but this design is hard to fill, hard to clean, doesn't seem to hold that much. After I finally got tired of complaining everyday, it was too late and too expensive to return. So now I have an expensive, plastic plant stand!!!

WarningAllergy Be Gone will send cheaper unit DDR5011. Not the Advertised -Danby DD5009EE.

I called ABG and they told me that they don't stock their advertised unit, (the one on they're web page) What?? So they just "substituted" the DDR5011, and said that this one was just the same..... Until I asked about the more extensive electronics, the Remote Control.

We bought this Danby # 5009 in April 2011. We've had it for one month, so this is a review when the product is new. Quiet just normal fan noise. I hooked the drain hose to it, put it in the basement corner, set it at 40% humidity, and walked away. It's about as quiet as a machine with a blower fan can be as quiet as the pedestal fan we have closer to the steps I have to go down and walk toward the unit before I can hear the fan on low speed, and get next to it to hear the hum of the condensor system. The included drain hose is ribbed I would prefer a smooth hose. The fan runs all the time to circulate air, but this is balanced by the Energy Star rating.

Beware which third party you deal with on Amazon. Be sure they will actually send what you ordered, and check their policy on order problems and return charges before you order.

January 2013 No increase in noise. I haven't touched it since I installed it with the drain hose.

This seems like a reasonable unit, but I bought it primarily for the low-noise and power saving claims, but I find that the fan runs continuously, meaning continuous noise and power usage.

Several other Units I have had in this usage run 1-2 hours/day, so are significantly better.

I liked its adjustable hygrometer (30-90%), but am returning it for a unit with auto-shut-off.

Honest reviews on Premiere Series 50 Pint Energy Star Dehumidifier

We bought model DDR3008EE in 6/08. It worked well at first, but in Fall 2008 ate a lot of power, and its anti-icing function appeared to stop working. We didn't use it over the winter. We turned it on in 7/09 and found its coils would not cool. Other than the fan blowing air, it was totally non-functional. A local shop confirmed that the coolant had leaked out. It took many calls to Danby just to finally get a human being instead of a machine. The man told me Danby couldn't help us as the 1 year warranty had run out. We paid $242 for this piece of junk. We won't ever buy a Danby product again.
