Buy Moist 'N' Aire Electronic Humidifier
Nothing but problems since the first day I had it. It does not regulate humidity at all, it's either on or off no matter what percentage is selected. I just recently replaced the hydrostat (another $50.00 wasted) and I still have the same problems. It has a mind of it's own! Sometimes it will come on, sometimes it won't shut off. Don't waste your time and money.I use this to humidify a 12 bank humidified cigar locker in a very dry environment. Keeps the unit at a perfect 68 to 70%. Easy to fill and know when you are running empty. Highly recommended.

Buy Madelaine Crystal Clear Humidifier Jar for Cigar Humidor
Not all humidifying crystals are of equal quality, and these are definitely the best.
I personally use them to refill the humidifying tubes I have been using for years. These tend to loose their capacity to hold the liquid after a year or two, and instead of buying new ones (they are not cheap when you factor shipping costs), I empty them and refill them with Madeleine crystals. Works like a charm for me (and my precious cigars).

I am disappointed to have to write that I was shipped the wrong product. I specifically ordered the Madelaine Crystal Clear Humidifier Jar because of its size (as I already have one). The size of the Madelaine jar fits very nicely in my humidor. Unfortunately, the seller shipped my a Xikar humidifier instead. The Xikar is significantly larger than the Madelaine and does not fit in my humidor. So I've wasted my time and money waiting on the Madelaine jar only to get not what I wanted. This is a fantastic humidifier. I have tried at least half a dozen varieties, and this is my favorite. The black plastic cap is easy to pop off for filling with water, but it also stays firmly in place. The cap has plenty of air holes to allow for adequate ventilation so the water and gel can properly maintain your humidor's climate. Give it a try; you won't be disappointed.

Cheap World Marketing 20401U KW-11 Replacement Wicks
I purchased a square heater from kero-world and the wick that was installed worked fine, but this replacement was hard to install and smoked very bad. I tried several wicks and had the same results. I was told to purchase a larger round heater that takes wicks with pins and had no problems. I dont know why these wicks would not work???

Buy Blueair 403 HepaSilent Air-Purification System
Some of the online specs are misleading. The Blueair 403 unit (at least the one I received) actually has 4 speeds, just like the Blueair 402! Even the manufacturer's own website as of this review lists it as having only 3 speeds. The only difference between the 402 and 403 is that the 403 comes with a small electronic timer that is magnetic (you can put it on your refrigerator or on the Blueair unit itself) which shows you when 6 months are up and it's time to replace the filter. This is handy, but not really needed. So, if you can still find a 402 (now discontinued) for a good price, I'd recommend you grab it!
This is a great unit but it is a bit larger than I expected. If you have a small bedroom or office, it may look a bit imposing. It runs very quiet at the two lowest settings and even at the third setting, I found the sound soothing enough to sleep with. In fact, the first night I had it, I put it on the 3 speed setting and found the sound quiet nice and relaxing.
It works very well and is more efficient and quieter than smaller units. The design is also more proven; I compared it with a smaller unit (the 250E) and the 403 works a lot better for a number of reasons (better filter, it pre-charges the particles so that they stick to the filter, and has a larger, thicker filter). The 403 also has a deeper, more soothing and relaxing sound than the smaller unit. Because of the design, you can put things like books on top of it if you want to since it takes in and outputs air from the sides. You can also place it against a wall, something you cannot really do with the smaller 250E unit as it has the filter on the back and outputs air out the top. Also, larger units like the 500 series output air out the top (and sides) so you would not be able to put something on top of those either. I'm not saying I would use my Blueair 403 as a bookshelf or anything, just that it can be convenient to place a magazine or book or two on the top surface at times.
I will now buy a second 403 unit for my living room because I am so impressed. Having two or more of the same series in different rooms throughout the house seems a benefit as you only have one type of filter to buy for them all. However, if your living room is on the large side, you may need a larger unit (such as the 500 series so check your square footage). Note that the 500 series is *much* louder though.
All in all, this is a great unit as it performs very well is *very* quiet and well made. I feel I sleep much better with this unit on and also have much less allergy symptoms including less red and itchy eyes. Even if you don't suffer from allergies, you can still benefit from having nice fresh air all the time. My guess is that you will sleep better and feel more rested when you wake up. As for myself, the Blueair has practically been a lifesaver-I feel a lot more healthy and my allergy symptoms are virtually gone!

However, the warranty information that comes with the purifier states that there is only a one-year limited warranty, and that that warranty is only valid if you have proof that you replaced the filter after 6 months. So, if you were not to replace your filter, the warranty would be valid for only 6 months.
You CAN get a 5 year warranty, and even a lifetime warranty, if you become a member of Blueair's filter subscription program, in which they send you a new filter every 6 months for $59 including shipping. You can do that by sending back their warranty card or by signing up online. I think that this program may make sense for some people, but I want to run this purifier for only about 6 months each year, as I have no sinus problems in the fall/winter, so I will use one filter every year and not one every six months.
You have to dig deep into their warranty policy (also on their web page) to find out that you *MAY* qualify for an extended warranty if you purchase your filters elsewhere and keep the receipts. That wording sounds like the company will decide, though, whether you actually *DO* qualify or not if you need a repair under warranty and have purchased your filters independently.
I find it ridiculous to make the warranty de facto dependent on whether or not you join their subscription program and it is deceiving to state a 10-year warranty on the amazon site when no such warranty exists and when any warranty that extends beyond six months is dependent on the purchase of somewhat costly replacement filters directly from Blueair. While I like this machine, I don't like to be deceived or suckered into a "free" 5-year warranty that actually costs you quite a bit extra if you do not run this machine full time through the year.
If this company plays dirty little tricks like that upon purchase, I don't even want to know how great their customer service is when you really have a problem down the line. No blue air for me this baby is going back.
Update September 2012: I ended up keeping this unit, because the only other one that I liked was not available online. I will not change the filters every six months, and, thus, my warranty will expire at the six month date. I posted some pictures of the warranty terms and of the "FREE" 5-year warranty card that came with the unit, just so folks can make an informed decision.
Update August 2013: The purifier still works fine and I have now replaced the filter for the first time after a year. The old filter still seemed to have plenty of life in it, though. One thing I like is that the machine produces a good amount of white noise when running on full speed, which is great for my dogs, who are scared of thunderstorms. They like to hang out in the room that has this filter running, because it drowns out the thunderclap quite well. I have noted that amazon now states that the purifier comes with a 5-year limited warranty, which is closer to the truth than the previously advertised 10-year warranty. I would add a star for more honest advertising, but for cutting the advertised warranty in half, they have now increased the price from the $399 I paid to $549 for the same model without an update. This price hike pushes this HEPA filter close to the price range of HEPA filters that have powerful additional filtering capabilities, like VOC or gas removal featured in some of the low-end IQAir filters.
Outside the fact that this unit cleans the air, I do also like that it is steel construction ( I did a lot of research and that is hard to find), its quiet!!!, and its energy efficient. As for warranty, the warranty card says mail in for free 5 year warranty.
So, I first purchased the Whirlpool Whispure Air Purifier (AP51030K) based on Consumer Reports and Amazon reviews. From the moment I turned it on, I knew there was no way could I fall asleep with that in the room. Even on the lowest setting, it is quite loud: I could hear it just fine from 30 feet away in another room, through two open doors. In addition, it uses a lot of electricity about 60 watts on the lowest setting. Finally, construction is a bit cheap: plastic and styrofoam.
Further research pointed to the Blueair series as quiet and energy efficient. Of these, the Blueair 403 is ranked the quietest. I ordered it and am very happy. It is extremely quiet on its lowest setting just barely audible from 8 feet away in bed and uses only 20 watts on the lowest setting. It's solidly constructed of metal, and well worth the higher price vs. the Whirlpool.
Regarding the Blueair 503, which I haven't tried: The 503 seems to be a better deal (just a little more expensive, rated for 50% more space, and surprisingly cheaper filter replacements). But the 403 is rated much quieter (27db vs 35db on lowest setting). I am considering getting the 503 for the living areas, which are larger and where noise is less of an issue.
Bottom Line: I love the Blueair 403 in my bedroom. The unit is quite large (11d x 20w x 23h), but well worth the space and price given its silence, energy efficiency and stylish construction.

I should start with the fact that everyone in our household has allergies, even the dog I think, but that had not been confirmed. Currently we have the Blueair units in all the bedrooms and family room. The best thing about Blueair units is they work! We really feel a difference. Before getting Blueair my wife was not able to sleep thru the night. She would get congested and her throat would get dry so she kept waking up to drink water. Whatever was giving her trouble is now gone from the air and she is finally able to get a good nights sleep.Outside the fact that this unit cleans the air, I do also like that it is steel construction ( I did a lot of research and that is hard to find), its quiet!!!, and its energy efficient. Not what I thought I was getting. The add picture is incorrect and misleading. I wanted the frame as I threw out the old one. Soleus Air PE2-08R-62 Evaporative Portable Air Conditioner Reviews
I cannot get a window unit due to my window size, and this unit came with a window kit that fit my windows. It worked absolutely perfect for 2 months. Then, on a particularly hot day, the bucket filled up with water and the unit shut off. I drained all the water, which is an absolute pain in the rear to do due to the drain being less than half an inch off the floor. The unit leaks water like a faucet ever since, all over the floor. There is really no effective way to use it anymore. I ordered a different brand that doesn't have water leakage issues. I should have listened to all the reviews I read. I practically paid several hundred dollars for a few months use. What a waste. The unit cools great, but what good is that with water all over your carpet? Stay away from this product.
UPDATE: The unit only leaks when moved. If the water reservoir fills up, and must be drained, the unit must be moved to do so because the drain plug is literally right on the floor and there is no pan or container you can get under it. The reservoir will fill eventually, the unit will have to be drained, will have to be moved, will leak. Once all the water leaks out that is going to leak the unit works great until its time to drain again. Like I said, it took 2 months before I had to drain, but this process was a major PIA. I would avoid this unit, but I still gave in another star because it does not leak except during the drainage process.

This one cools a 166 sq ft room that only needs to be cooled ten to fifteen degrees and it's more than powerful enough for that. It can bring the temperature down in fifteen minutes or so.
Portable air conditioners, until fans, need to have an unsightly and awkward tube connected to the window. These tubes are inevitable flimsy and don't fit well. They seem unacceptable unless the only alternate solution is to suffer in the heat and then suddenly they don't seem bad.
Soleus is perhaps the best portable air conditioner manufacturer. I haven't ever had a non-Soleus unit but I've heard horror stories about others. I've heard bad things about these too but I haven't had anything bad happen.
This is probably the smallest and cheapest good unit on the market so if 8000 BTU is enough for you, this is an excellent bet.
UPDATE: We've had it for almost a year now and are still satisfied with it. It gets the room nice and cool very quickly, and we have never yet had to empty the condensation tank. So that's not a big problem in a dry climate.
Then we had a few weeks when the building's main A/C was working. But sure enough, another heat wave and the central unit failed. This morning it was 78 degrees in the coolest room of our apartment. We rolled out the Soleus, assembled the vent panel and duct, and turned it on. Fifteen minutes later the room was 75 degrees.
This A/C unit is a bit noisy, but not really worse than the central A/C's fan unit in our apartment. We have the Soleus hooked up in the living room and venting out that patio door. A fan will push the cool air back to us in the bedroom.
78 degrees probably doesn't sound too bad, but when you are 46 and hormonally imbalanced, it's too hot for comfortable sleep. I consider the Soleus a good investment and would add that I was very happy with the fast and courteous handling of our missing-parts request to the manufacturer.

The best air conditioners are large central units that connect to a whole building HVAC. Since you're reading this review, it's likely that a central unit isn't a possibility for you like it wasn't for me. If you can put in a window unit, that is your next best bet but if that is not practical, you've got to go portable. . . . if you're mindful of one limitation: it condenses lots of moisture into a limited capacity container, and will need to be emptied or drained. It's built low to the ground, so I put it up on a little platform and attached the short included plastic hose to the drain port and put a container under it to catch the "drip" (which when it is very hot and humid is really a "stream"!). Recognizing that limitation (discussed in previous reviews), I've avoided any problems and have been quite pleased with the product. This works well for the particular conditions in which we're using it. We're happy with it. We live in northern California, where hot weather is usually also dry, and evenings are cooler. We put this in a bedroom that gets very hot during the day and doesn't cool down quickly enough at night. Instead of trying to fit the "window kit" into our old-fashioned window, we just leave the window slightly open with the end of the vent hose sticking out while the unit is running. We run it at bedtime and it cools the room down nicely. I gave it only four stars instead of five because of a couple of design flaws: (1) Though I don't expect that we'll have to deal with emptying the condensation tank much, if at all, it's true that the opening is awfully close to the floor, and I can see that in a more humid environment, where it would need emptying more often, it would be pretty awkward. I don't see why the designers couldn't have put the hole a little higher up so that you could actually get a pan or bowl under it. (2) The instructions said to keep the vent hose as straight as possible, but they put the vent hole at the bottom of the unit too. Most people don't have their windows at floor level, and putting this thing on a table or something would also be awkward, since it's so big and heavy (90 pounds, I think). That said, it works just fine for us sitting on the floor with a 90-degree bend in the hose, so I guess that's not such a big deal.UPDATE: We've had it for almost a year now and are still satisfied with it. This year, I'd had enough. We ordered the Soleus based on a couple of days of Internet research, and we bought from Amazon for ease of returns if that became necessary. The unit arrived short one panel for the screen-door vent adaptor. We emailed the manufacturerer and they promptly sent not one but two additional panels.Then we had a few weeks when the building's main A/C was working. We rolled out the Soleus, assembled the vent panel and duct, and turned it on. Fifteen minutes later the room was 75 degrees.
This A/C unit is a bit noisy, but not really worse than the central A/C's fan unit in our apartment. We have the Soleus hooked up in the living room and venting out that patio door. A fan will push the cool air back to us in the bedroom.
78 degrees probably doesn't sound too bad, but when you are 46 and hormonally imbalanced, it's too hot for comfortable sleep. I consider the Soleus a good investment and would add that I was very happy with the fast and courteous handling of our missing-parts request to the manufacturer.

We were very happy with the first SPT SU-3750 Ultrasonic Penguin-Shaped Humidifier humidifier we bought, so we a pig, and eventually, five more penguins. I liked the penguin better than the pig from the start, and I still do, even though my review for the penguins is now less favorable than it was at first. I haven't bothered to look for a replacement.
DO THEY WORK? Yes, the our only pig and four of the six penguins do. I can run the penguins faster than the pig, because mist starts leaking out around the pig's face and getting the shelf wet if I turn it up too much (or don't get the face seated right.) We usually run each penguin for about 18 hours, and the pig for 20-22, with each roughly 1 gallon tank-full. Mist starts coming out immediately when you turn it on.
MODEL: I don't like the pig as well as the penguin because the mist comes out the pig's snout, which is not at the very top. It's easy to not get the face seated correctly on the body, and then mist comes out all over, getting your shelf wet. Even it the face is seated properly, if you run it full steam, some mist comes out around the edges of the face. (Not to mention that mist comming out the snout is a little gross. Also, the red light by the knob makes the pink bottom part glow in a dark room, which I find slightly creepy.)
NOISE: Most of them are pretty quiet, altough they do generate some white noise, and you occasionally hear bubbles as the base "gulps" water from the tank.
CLEANING: I rarely do. I love that these stay pretty clean with basically no maintenance. We had a cool mist humidifier with a filter that quickly grew all kinds of orange stuff, and warm mist vaporizers that create black shale-like stuff in the tanks, so these penguins are better. I use regular tap water, and we do get a little white dust/mineral deposit film from these (which is much worse with one unit than with the other three), and after a couple months I've noticed stuff starting to grow, mainly in the parts where the mist comes up & out. It would be nice if the base didn't still have a bunch of water in it when you take off the tank, so you could easily let everything dry out every now and then or so to keep stuff from growing.
FILLING: You take off the face, lift off the tank (the clear part), flip it over and unscrew a cap on the bottom of the tank, and fill it in a sink or bathtub. It's nice that it fits in a regular bathroom sink. It would be nicer if you could bring a jug of water to the pig and fill it in place, without turning it upside down, or at least if it wouldn't drip when you carry the tank.
SUITABLE AROUND KIDS: Yes. The mist & units are cool, so little kids can't get burned. And they're cute. My 2 1/2 year old loves "raking the smoke", slicing a spatula through the mist. He does turn the ones on the counter on and off.
MAKE SURE: 1) It's high enough above the floor that the floor won't get wet. (A 42" counter is fine, lower may be ok too.) 2) the tank is seated properly: a couple bubbles rising will let you know that the tank is back on the base correctly. Otherwise, it will use up the water in the base, then stop making mist even though the tank is still full.

This is a really great humidifier if you're looking for something inexpensive, with no filters to replace. It's very simple, easy to use and really puts out a lot of steam (adjustable, of course). Since it goes through the water quickly, it doesn't build up pink gunk like other more expensive humidifiers weve tried. The only thing that's a little tricky is getting the water tank back on the base without splashing a few drops. But overall, it's a pig with steam coming out it's snout! I've had this humidifier for 2 years now, and it's still going strong. After two years, the LED light indicator has definitely gone out, but the main function still works well. I've never had a problem with leaks. Other than the LED light, this humidifier works just as well as the day I bought it. I ordered this pig last month, and I don't know how I ever lived without it! I run it mostly while I'm awake, as I have a fear of running appliances unattended, but lately I've caught a cold and have been running it at night as well. Not only does it work wonderfully (great control for mist output!), but many of my friends have expressed how jealous they are, as they own plain, boring humidifiers. So unless you're really boring, don't feel silly buying the pig!Refilling is easy, and I've had no issues placing the tank back on the base (it was somewhat tricky the first day, but never again). Although it's not the recommendation, I've been using tap water, with no negative effects so far. Though, I do plan on switching to filtered soon, as I love my pig and want him to have a good life.

My husband and I both love this humidifier. It works great and it is sooo cute. I especially like how it can go for 2 full days on low to med with one full tank of water. 14909 Sears Kenmore Humidifier Wick Filter (2 Pack) Review
These filters will work, but they were not what I expected. I thought they were Sears brand, but they are a cheaper knock off packaged in flimsy plastic bags.
