Have only used this for a day, so this review does not address reliability.

Pros:

This unit excels at its primary function of removing water from the air. Was dropping my basement more than 1 point of humidity per hour (starting from 50% humidity and in conjunction with my old Whirlpool dehumidifier).

Amazingly quiet.

Nice set of controls including humidistat and self defrost. Humidistat setting goes down to 30%. Operation is limited to 41 degrees fahrenheit or warmer.

It has an internal electronic pump for self drain, or you can use passive gravity drain for continuous drain.

The instructions are written in clear english with some helpful tips.

Some cons:

Comes with castor wheels on the bottom and these wheels don't lock, so I have to block the tires to make the unit truly stationary (placing the wheels inside Gatorade bottle caps works well). Also, if you remove the wheels, the unit is not stable (there is a triangular piece of plastic that protrudes from the bottom, so the unit is very wobbly without the wheels).

The threading on the passive gravity drain was a bit off, so my garden hose would not attach as firmly as I would have liked. I used their included hose instead, which worked well.

No continuous run setting, so if the humidistat goes bad, unit won't work.

I gave it five stars because the cons were very minor in my book.

Also, for reference I comparison shopped this versus the Frigidaire FAD504DUD 50-Pint Dehumidifier and Amazon was selling the Friedrich at about the same price (a few $$ more). The Friedrich had two extra things going for it: 1) it has a built in pump to drain the water, 2) several reviewers reported problems with the Frigidaire gravity drain, which is a key feature for me. Seems comparable to the DeLonghi DD50P 50 Pt which was $50 more.

****** update *****

5-15-2013

Have run the unit for 10 months and it has been flawless. Air filter is also easier to access and clean relative to my old Whirlpool (which is not bad either). The drain system has also been working well. I continue to use the gravity drain attached to a Little Giant condensate pump (b/c I already had it set up for the basement drain), so have not been using the internal electric pump.

For reference, my basement stays around 59 degrees most of the year with a low of around 53 in a real cold snap. I have been pleased that this unit's humidistat seems to work very well, in that the unit shuts off and on as appropriate. I have a separate humidistat about 20 feet from the unit that confirms the unit's readings. All the more impressive because on some brands the humidistat is located in such as way that it is impacted by the operation of the de-humidifier and thus not as useful.

I bought this dehumidifier to replace an aging one in my basement. I decided to get the Friedrich D50AP because it has a built-in pump. That feature freed me to locate it in an optimal location and run the supplied 15' clear hose to my sink, rather than be limited to locating the unit near my floor drain and using a gravity drain hose.

There's an illuminated digital readout of the air's temp and humidity that's easy to read from several feet away so you can check the room's status at a glance. The unit will restart/resume if the power goes out.

The air moves in through the front of the unit and exhausts straight up from the top. There are no air vents on the rear or sides so you have lots of options where you can position the unit relative to walls and other things in the room.

I can't hear it running from the 1st floor when it's down in the basement. Standing next to the unit the compressor hum is barely audible, but the fan has two speeds... strong, and stronger, and both are very audible and may distract from a phone conversation or watching TV.

It heats the room quite a bit, so it would only be comfortable to use in living areas if the room is naturally cool or forcibly cooled.

As for its 50 pint performance, it has no problem handling a 1,500 square foot sump-pumped basement during rainy days and holds humidity below 50% (I have it set to 45%). As a test I put the drain hose into a bucket and it filled it up in less than a day.

Overall, I'm very happy with it. It appears to be a quality product. I will consider the Friedrich brand again. If you think the handy pump feature may be useful now or in the future, this model is a great choice. If you are planning to have it in your bedroom, office or where you watch TV, be aware that when it's busy dehumidifying, the powerful fan makes very audible air whoosh noise, even on the low setting.

I bought 2 of these Friedrich D50AP in addition to a DeLonghi DD50P 50 Pt. Energy Star Dehumidifier with Patented Pump, to take care of a damp and musty basement problem at my mother's house.

I think these are generally nicer than the DeLonghi model, due to the fact that the Delonghi has a "pump" button that needs to be set to make the pump work. I tested a power failure situation and the "pump" light was not illuminated/reset once power resumed. The Friedrich has an automatic switch when you connect the pump hose. No need to have the 'pump' button set.

In terms of aesthetics, I think the Friedrich looks nicer, considering both the drain hose, and the pump hose is in the back. The DeLonghi has the pump hose right in the front of the unit. Since I'm using the pump/drain hose instead of manually emptying the bucket, there is no need for me to see how much the bucket is filled (a feature of the DeLonghi).

I did order two of these units, and one of them was producing a very loud humming noise. If I put a little pressure on it, it would stop the insane rattling. Clearly the product should not have passed QC, so I did return one of them. The one that is working, works like a charm and I personally think is a little better than the Delonghi.

Honest reviews on Friedrich D50AP 50 Pint Dehumidifier with built-in drain pump

We had mushrooms growing in the cracks of our 1914 old Portland 900 sq ft full basement floor. It was time. I never heard of this brand before, we got the 50 pint Fredrich after reading all the reviews. I plugged in the unit in and hooked up the pump drain hose to the washing machine drain, on low it is quiet, it ran solid for about 6 hours and dropped the humidity from 88% to 45% and then just cycles on and off. I measured electrical usage, it uses 525 watts on low fan when on, with no vampire load at all. It makes a little heat which is welcome in our cold basement. We've had the unit for 1 week now, and I'm super happy

I am using this product in my basement. I bought it to replace an older Sears model. I found it to be quieter and like the continuous drain feature. I used it for a week before installing the drain and found the bucket was not very sturdy. Now that the drain is hooked up it is working out fine. Also it is an Energy Star product and it is less expensive to run than my older model. I would recommend this product only if you plan to use the continuous drain feature.

....this will NOT hold 15 large ring gauge cigars. Holds 15 Coronas, Lonsdales, Panatellas, etc., but only 12 Robustos, Toros or Churchills. But that's fine with me as I can't imagine needing to take 15 Churchills anywhere.

Solid as a tank with two secure latches and a lanyard. Great travel accessory for any cigar smoker.

I ordered this humidor in the Spring of 2013 and I have been using it very regularly during my summer travels. I love this humidor and I didn't have any problem opening it. It holds and protects the cigars perfectly with one exception. The top row of cigars will press against the humidifier and if you use a propylene solution on the humidifier, it will get on your cigars. My solution for this is to stack the 1st and 2nd level cigars on each other and put the foam divider on top to protect them from the humidifier.

Other than that, this is a must buy for the traveling cigar smoker and it's a great price on amazon.

I bought this to replace a Vicks Humidifier that I was sick of constantly buying expensive, short lasting filters on and it was on its last legs in function.

Very simple design on this. Use in bedroom and seems to humidify well enough. The filter that came with it was a floppy thing, that was very difficult to keep upright when putting the top back on after filling. I came to find out replacement filters have a plastic frame, which solves this issue. The filter otherwise would have lasted the full dry winter season for me. I use the bacteria treatment. That bottle will last a very long time! It is awkward to fill and needs to be filled every other night if run on low or every night if run on high. My biggest problem with this unit is how noisy it is. The fan rattles loudly and I HAVE to run it on low to sleep, even with earplugs in. The rattling comes and goes, but makes me want to get rid of it most nights.

I bought this humidifier because it had advertised its ability to humidify a fairly large space. I only needed it to cover a small area but in a large room. It has not lived up to its claims, as I cannot raise the humidity more than the high teens/low 20's, certainly too low a humidity to be comfortable. I guess the old adage, "You get what you pay for!" rings true with humidifiers as well as most everything else in life.

Do not pay more for to replace the full cartridge every time. One comes with your Air-O-Swiss (AOS), buy 1 more CARTRIDGE here and you are set. AOS sells demineralization GRANULES without the cartridge. Once you have two CARTRIDGES, just buy the GRANULES. It cuts down on plastic waste and will save you a ton on the refills. This is something AOS condones and it does not void your machine's warranty.

Every 2-3 months (depending on use), you remove the cartridge, take the top off (it should unscrew), and pour used granules in the trash. Follow the instructions that AOS provides to refill the new granules (its very straightforward).

I always have 1 spare cartridge on hand because you must soak the newly refilled cartridge for 24 hours. If you are fine going a day without your humidifier every 2-3 months then you just need the one cartridge that comes with your AOS.

Thanks for taking the time to read my review, and I hope you found it helpful in making a purchase decision.

We're in Seattle, and after a year without replacing this I still don't see anything like the dust people talk about. But from looking at some numbers for minerals in city water supplies, the differences are very large says that magnesium levels (just to pick one) in Lubbock, TX are 10x what they are in Seattle.

I've never owned an aromatherapy diffuser before, so I have nothing to compare this to, but this is a reasonably quiet (not silent -works by vibrating a little pad at the base of the water tank to aerosolize the water/oil, so there will be some noise) and the 500 ml tank lasts a very long time.

I'm using this with doTERRA oils to keep my bathroom smelling nice and to keep the air and surfaces disinfected and this is much nicer looking (to me) than the doTERRA lotus diffuser. The mist is quite fine and the scent travels farther into the house, so I feel like this unit gives good coverage. It's been great. I really can't stand candles (burning and inhaling wax and artificial scents? yuck!!) and aerosol air fresheners are poison, too. I don't know what took me so long to get one of these!

One other thing I like about this is that it has the option of keeping the light off, though the reason I give this 4 stars is because the colors are really half of what they say (not that I really want a colored light, anyway): The lighter of the shades (each color has a light and a bright shade) flickers like crazy. There is NO WAY you'd want that light on -it makes my brain hurt for the fraction of a second it takes to click through to the next color.

I've had this for about two months, now, and I use it daily. No problems at all. Easy to clean and has really made our bathroom nicer. I catch my daughter up on her step stool, nose over the mister, from time to time and it's great to know that I don't have to worry about her inhaling anything toxic. :)

---

I just posted this information in response to a question asked of another reviewer and it seems like information worth making more visible:

It is not silent but it is quiet -soothing, white-noise-machine (but not too loud) type sound. Just the sound of the vibration pad aerosolizing the water/oil.

I don't know about a warranty -never looked and threw the packaging away, so can't check.

Yes, has a no-light feature -was very important to me, too!

Yes, timer: 60 minutes, 120 minutes, 180 minutes, and ON (will not shut off until water gets too low). This will not, however, cycle automatically through an on-off cycle (i.e., on for 15 minutes, off for 45, on again, off again, etc.).

The machine turns itself off if the water level gets too low. BUT, since this is not a heat-evaporative unit, I don't know if there would be the same worry about a fire starting if the water ran out. Anyway, I know that it turns off if the water gets too low.

This will keep running for HOURS. I haven't timed it, but I know a full tank will run for at least 8 hours.

I now have two diffusers -one that uses water and one that doesn't -and I use them at different times and in different rooms. This product works well and holds 500 ml water. Honest reviews on SainSonic® LM-168 500ML Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser Air

I've had 4 different diffusers over the last 2 years and this is by far the best one. The fact that it holds 500 ml of water is a huge plus to me. You can leave it on all night and not worry about refilling. The colors are beautiful and you can change it to your favorite one or just leave it on "chaining every few seconds" mode. The vapor it gives is strong enough to fill the whole apartment. It was delivered very fast, which I didn't expect because it was being shipped from China. I had it within few days of ordering. Great customer service too, they replied within few hours of inquiry. I just hope it lasts longer then all the other diffusers I've had. But so far it is a great, great product. The price is the lowest on the market for this type/capacity diffusers. The ones I owned before were a lot more expensive and only lasted for a few months. Somehow those would stop working right when the warranty just expired. Highly recommended.

Reviews of Holmes HPF1151MK-UM 3-Speed Outdoor Stand Fan with Misting Kit

Holmes HPF1151MK-UM 3-Speed Outdoor Stand Fan with Misting Kit
Customer Ratings: 3 stars

I love the concept, but think the design of this fan could be better.

Aside from sitting in the shade of a tall tree with a breeze, water misters are the most effective way to stay cool outdoors in the summer. Misters are usually intended for use in dry climates (like Arizona). However, I find that they are still extremely effective in humid climates, if done properly. If you want to be comfortable outdoors in the summer, I recommend looking into getting a misting fan.

My gripe with this fan is due to a sub-optimal design. The fan doesn't move enough air far enough (it spreads the air to the sides instead of throwing a column of air straight ahead). The misters put out too much water (you get soaked) and don't have any way of regulating how much they put out. Each misting nozzle puts out about 1/4 cup of water per minute. The fan comes with 4 misting nozzles, so it sprays 1 cup of water per minute (this WILL soak you!). Read my hacks below to make this fan work better.

PRO's:

Water misting with a breeze is the best way to keep cool in the hot summer

Water misting hose is reasonably long

Electrical cord is reasonably long, but shorter than the hose

Fan is weather resistant, so it can be left outdoors

Misting nozzles are removable, so you can unclog them if they ever get clogged

Oscillating fan spreads out the mist a bit more, so it doesn't soak just one area

CON's:

No way to adjust how much water flows (1 cup of water per minute) (the fan should have come with stoppers to replace the sprayers with, so you can control how many nozzles are firing)

Fan does not move the air far enough, so most of the water it sprays falls within a few feet of the fan

Short stand (only about 3 feet tall)

Fan vertical swivel doesn't have enough degree of movement (can't point it up far enough) and it seems to move in increments (I think it's notched to fall into positions)

Stand wobbles due to loosely fitting parts

Misting nozzles have clips that don't hold onto the fan cover very well

Misting nozzles and hose seem to be delicate (if you accidentally tug on it, it will probably break)

HOW TO MAKE IT WORK BETTER (THIS IS PURELY MY OPINION)

Here are a few hacks that I think will make this fan work better (but it probably voids your warranty). I am not suggesting you try these; these are just my thoughts on what would make it better.

1. Prevent the stand from wobbling:

The stand comes as three pieces that slide into each other. However, the tapered end of each pipe that slides into another is tapered too much, so it wobbles.

To prevent it from wobbling, simply place a toothpick on the tapered end, so it wedges in between the loose pipe parts.

2. Clog 3 of the 4 misting nozzles, so it sprays only 1/4 cup of water per minute:

A 1/4 cup of water per minute is a good amount of mist -it will keep you cool, but not soak you. The idea is to spray a fine mist onto your skin, so the breeze evaporates it away, taking body heat along with it. It should not soak you!

To clog the nozzles, I unscrewed the last three nozzles in the chain of nozzles. Then, I cut a small piece of rubber from a rubber O ring with the diameter just slightly wider than the hollow core of the nozzle. I sanded the tip of the small piece of rubber to a small point, so it's easier to insert into the nozzle shaft. Using pliers, I twisted the piece of rubber into the nozzle's shaft. Twisting makes it easier to force it in, since the rubber will stretch itself thin as you twist it. Note: I put the rubber into the metal nozzle head, not the base it connects to. Then I screwed the nozzle head back into the base. So, the clogged nozzle essentially acts as a stopper. The piece of rubber sticks out of the rear of the nozzle a tiny bit, so I can always remove it if I need to.

3. Position the misting nozzles to get best spray coverage:

Assuming you clogged three of the four nozzles to reduce the amount of water sprayed, your next objective should be to get the water mist to travel as far as possible, so it cools off everything in its path. Normally, you would think that positioning the spraying nozzle at the top of the fan would give you the furthest reach. However, the air coming out of the fan twists as it comes out. So if you put a nozzle at the top of the fan (the 12 o'clock position), the mist gets picked up by the airstream and twists towards the ground (kind of like a curve ball).

Through some trial and error, I found that the best position of the misting nozzle is at the 8 o'clock position on the face of the fan, about half way out from the center. If you put the misting nozzle there, the air stream picks it up and actually projects it upwards before twisting it over and to the right. By the time it completes that loop, the twisting air spiral is no longer twisting, so it simply carries the mist forward. I found this positioning gets the furthest reach.

4. Move the fan blades forward in the housing to get better airflow:

The fan sits inside of a housing that is too wide at the rear and gets narrow at the front. The fan sits inside the wide housing. This causes some of the air to not flow through the opening at the front, but to instead, circle back around through the fan again. In my opinion, the optimal position is such that the outer edge of the fan is close its housing so the air can't bleed away from the edge. You can position the fan blades a little bit forward to reduce some of the air bleeding, but it's still not far enough.

To move the fan blades forward, use a Phillips screw driver to remove the fan cage from the front of the fan. Then, use a small Allen wrench to loosen the screw that locks the fan blade onto the motor shaft. Slide the fan blade forward about an inch (don't go more than that, otherwise the lock screw won't have anything to lock onto). Re-tighten the locking screw to secure the blade onto the motor shaft. Put the fan cage back on with the screws.

This puts the fan a bit closer to the inside of the ring on the cage that's slightly larger than the fan blades, and reducing bleeding from the edge of the fan blade. It should cause the fan to move a little more air.

I hope you find these tips informative. These are just my personal hacks and I doubt they're recommended or supported by the manufacturer -that is, you're on your own if you try these.

We recently had a small family gathering of about 20 people, 10 of whom are kids. A few days before the party, we found out it was going to be in the 90s and humid that day, and wondered what we could do to make being outside more comfortable and not have the kids running in and out of the house to cool down. We started researching misting fans, but by that time, it was too late to order anything online (ordinarily, Amazon is the place I would start), so I ran around town looking for a misting fan. Home Depot, Sam's Club, Target and Menard's all came up empty, then I broke down and went to Wal-Mart. After specifically asking an employee if they had misting fans, being told no, and deciding to look for myself, I found the Holmes Indoor/Outdoor Fan with Misting Kit tucked away in a corner. I got it home, put it together in about 3 minutes and was enjoying the cooling effects of my new purchase in no time. The misting kit easily snaps onto the grates on the fan and the 4 nozzles do a pretty good job of spreading the mist there is about a 10-foot projection of misting/cooling, and the oscillator rotates on a 220 degree arc., which makes the coverage area that much greater. It was also a big hit at the party my mother in law (who is dealing with hot flashes and lives in Alabama) was so impressed, that she wants one for herself. Also, regarding the unfortunate experience of one reviewer who had mist blown back into the fan and it quit working: we left ours outside last night and we got about a 1/4 inch of rain. I turned the fan on this morning and it worked like a charm. The motor is enclosed and the owners manual specifically says it's designed to be kept outdoors (during summer months of course). And while the height of the stand isn't adjustable, you can control the angle of fan "face" itself. So far, so good!

This is a great concept, but the second time we used it the wind blew the mist back into the fan and it immediately stopped working. I let it dry out and it began working again only to fail 2 hours later and I wasn't even using the mist..

I will say that Deerso, the company that ships it has been very professional and wonderful to deal with. They refunded my money immediately and couldn't have been nicer and more apologetic for the problem.

This was my second purchase of this fan, my first one is still working fine, but I wanted insurance! In the worst heat of summer, this fan makes the patio area at least 20 degrees cooler, and downright pleasant to be in! The fact that the mister hose cracked and leaked badly after only one season accounts for three stars instead of five. Our solution was to pick up one of those cobra-style misters, attach the garden hose, and put it right in front of the fan, which has held up beautifully in all kinds of weather. If you could buy the mister as a replacement item, it would definitely rate a five.
