This is the first humidifier that I really wouldn't mind displaying around the house. It is very simplistic and minimalistic yet very functional. It is just stunningly beautiful.
Roolen Breath is an ultrasonic humidifier that knows how to adjusts itself in respect to the humidity level in your room. The dryer it is, the harder it works. If it sense humidity is just right, it puts itself on standby.

This humidifier works more quietly compared to my other humidifiers (We had a Vicks that require to replace filters regularly and humidifiers in all sort of shapes of animals). It still operates with a fan but somehow manages to keep it mum. Overall, it is a great product and I love it.

The Roolen Breath is a compact and easy to use ultrasonic humidifier.
It consists of just three parts: the reservoir tank, the mister/fan unit and the AC adapter. After filling the tank with water (slightly less than a gallon), it fiushts over the mister. A single push button cycles the Breath through four modes: standard, high, auto and standby.
Standard mode offers about 24 hours of humidifier operation, high about 12 hours. The auto mode offers 24+ hours as the machine self regulates maintaining humidity between 40-55%. The standard and high modes run continuously. I operated the breath in room considerably larger than the 400 square feet that it's designed to treat. On a blustery fall day, it raised the RH in the room from 46 to 50% in 90 minutes and to 55% after 5 hours.
When operating, a plume of cool-to-the-touch is visible about 10 to 12 inches above top of the humidifier, which as about 10 inches tall. It is very quiet in operation, and will likely not be heard over ambient sounds in even the quietest rooms.
Roolen recommends filtered water, but tap water can be used if the tank is rinsed weekly.
The Breath includes a good, complete user guide and excellent pictographs in full color printed on the carton. Less one star for no water level indicator or sight glass.

Humidifiers are usually pretty basic items with little style to speak of. This, however, actually looks quite nice! It is a tower shape, with the "steam" emitted from the top. Very attractive (albeit with a bit of a Four Mile Island cooling tower look to it). I have the white version, which is all white except for the insert on the top, which is black.
The build quality seems pretty good, which has been a sore point for me in the past with humidifiers. They never seem to last very long. While it's too early to say for sure, I'm hoping the nice construction quality translates into a long life span. I'll update this review should that not be the case.
Filling it with water is very simple just turn the "tower" portion upside down, unscrew the cap and pour the water in. It is a pretty tall unit, but it does fit under the spout in my bathroom sink. If you have a shallow sink or a low profile faucet, it may not fit. But it will certainly fit in a kitchen sink for refilling ease. The cap fits tight with zero leaks when replaced on the base unit.
It has three operational modes, all selected by a single button on the back. Low continuous, high continuous, and auto, with the latter controlled by a non user-controllable humistat. Basically the auto mode (the mode I use most of the time) will turn the humidifier off when the RH reaches a set point, usually around 55%. I found the auto setting maintained a comfortable RH level for me even though I could not set a specific RH for it to hit and maintain.
Operation is whisper quiet, making this perfect for a bedroom. You'll hear an occasional water gurgle, but it's very muted. The operation light (which shows what mode it's in, plus indicates if the water container is empty) is very small and doesn't cause a problem or become an annoyance in a dark room.
The power plug has a somewhat large "wall wart" on the end, but that seems to be unavoidable these days. It is styled nicely in a rectangular shape with rounded corners, so it's not too bad.
It is fussy with regard to water. The manual recommends filtered water, but tap water can be used if filtered water is not possible. Weekly cleaning with vinegar is recommended if you use tap water to keep the mineral build-up low (which is always a problem in pretty much any type of humidifier). The process basically entails filling it with a mix of vinegar and water, shaking, letting it sit for 20 minutes, another shake, and then drain/rinse.
This is an ultrasonic humidifier, so the water is not heated. The mist (which sort of looks like smoke) is cool to the touch. On the downside, an ultrasonic humidifier can leave white dust in the room due to the mineral content of the water (another reason not to use tap water).
A quick primer on humidifier types. A warm mist machine heats the water in a small cup. The output is warm. A cool mist machine blows air through a pad that is saturated with water. There is no visible output. A ultrasonic machine, such as this, uses ultrasonic waves to create a cool "plume" of vapor.
Each has pluses and minuses with regard to maintenance, noise level and the ability to add items to the water (such as menthol to help with colds). My favorite type is the ultrasonic. While it has the downside of potentially depositing fine white dust (which is usually minor) and lacks the ability to add mixtures to the water, the benefits are that it operates quietly, there's no danger of burning your hand if you get it right into the mist, and they tend to be the easiest to maintain since no replacement pads are needed.
Of all the ultrasonics I've used over the years, this is a real standout, and I would highly recommend it. A bit pricy, but great looks and performance.

The Roolen Breath humidifier is so elegant and beautiful. Somebody finally remade the hideous appliance into something wonderful. This is a dead silent ultrasonic humidifier. There is no way I should be excited about a silly humidifier the Roolen got me excited.
Pictures don't do this humidifier justice. The white model I have is simply wonderful to look at. The plastic is a soft matte finish that feels good. The glossy black top makes this look like a Scandinavian design volcano. Everything about this humidifier is gentle sweet curves that are wonderful to look at. Most humidifiers are hideous; they have blue plastic tanks, ugly big controls, or are a great big box with louvers all over them. This is a thing of beauty.
Pretty would be nice, but humidifying a room is the critical thing this does. In that regard, it works spectacularly well. When the unit is running there is a beautiful white cloud emitted from the top of the unit. We all love watching this cloud it does look like the volcano is erupting (minus the lava). Controlling humidity it is right on the money. The room I'm using this in went from 43% humidity to 50% in fairly short order. It has maintained the humidity between 48 and 50% ever since. For a home humidifier, that is incredibly precise. We are just on the cusp of heating season, so it only used a gallon of water in a couple of days. I have this in a fairly large room and we have hot water heat.
The unit makes no fan noise at all when running. There is a very slight water dripping noise every once in a while. If this were in a bedroom with absolutely no other sound, you might hear the noise. Oddly, I find that water noise pleasant and relaxing. I contrast that to the fan noise of a lot of other humidifiers. Some ultrasonics also make noise with fans. This is silent.
This is probably one of the easiest in the world to operate humidifiers. Press the button on the back to remove the top, which includes the water reservoir. Fill the tank and pop it back on the base. Plug in a wall wart (takes up two plugs on a power strip) AC adapter, and press the "mode" button to select standby, low, high, or auto. There is a tiny status LED on the front of the unit. Dim green is low, full green is high, white / blue is Auto, orange is standby, and red is out of water (really the red is white and red together not pink but two colors). That's it, nothing more.
The manual suggests using filtered water, as with all ultrasonic humidifiers, this is a good idea. I'm using tap water; our mineral content is not too bad. If you use deionized or filtered water, the ultrasonic device won't have to be cleaned very often. And the glossy black top will not get white water spots on it.
There are generally three different kinds of humidifiers steam, evaporative, and ultrasonic. Steam humidifiers are a bit harder to find, they have a heating element in the base that boils water. The steam is usually blown out of the unit. These use a lot of electricity and develop deep scale very quickly (they are hard to maintain). Evaporative are probably the most common, they are a water bath with a wick material (usually round with a diamond pattern) and a fan that blows air through the wick to evaporate the water. These are a great simple, inexpensive style, with the huge down side of a noisy fan blowing air around. This is also one of the more common whole house style humidifiers (for forced air heat). There is also a bit of a problem with mold growth on the wick if it isn't changed frequently. The last version is ultrasonic where a metal plate is vibrated at incredibly high frequency underneath a layer of water. This creates fine water droplets that naturally rise. Some units have a fan to help blow those droplets out of the unit. These tend to be sanitary and work very well. Their down side is hard water deposits can accumulate on the ultrasonic plate and make it work less efficiently.
The Roolen humidifier is an ultrasonic unit (the generator they use looks similar to every one I've ever seen in a home humidifier. Where they win huge points is in the humidity sensing and controlling, the silent fan they use to blow the cloud out of the unit, and the incredibly beautiful design. This is just an amazing humidifier.

Growing up, humidifiers were often very ugly and very bulky. They often required much maintenance and had little to no automation. The Breath Ultrasonic Cool-Mist Humidifier by Roolen changes all that.
In beautiful piano black or white, this humidifier is both functional, and aesthetically pleasing. The tower like design keeps the unit compact and the footprint to a minimum. This would be perfect for use in a main living area or in a bedroom, and would blend with most decors. Setup is very simple out of the box. In addition to the humidifier and power supply, you will find a very easy to follow instruction booklet to get you off and running in a flash.
After filling the unit with cold water and powering the Breath on cool mist begins to gently flow from the Breath. Gentle and soothing puffs of cool moist air begin to mix into the room creating a more balanced humid environment. The Breath gives you a few good options for optimizing the humidity to your desired level; the unit features a low, high, automatic and standby feature. In terms of noise, the unit runs very quiet. A different brand of humidifier I had constantly sounded like a fan turned on so I was pleased to see this unit runs quiet and I know that can be important for those who may be light sleepers. This product makes it easy to get the humidity just right, especially heading into winter when it starts to become drier, especially in our houses.
After having used the Breath Ultrasonic Cool-Mist Humidifier by Roolen for the last 48 hours, I have been very pleased with its operation when compared to that of my former humidifier. The Breath looks better, the performance of the unit is as expected, and overall I'm really satisfied with the product.
