The product looks fine but I give up. This is the 2nd LW24 I bought. I have Asthma and really need a good Air Washer to improve my daily life, a friend recommended this brand, he has a LW14 & likes it.

After step by step setup the 1st one, everything checked fine, turned on the power, green light on & I can see the fan was moving, at once, the red light on too, fan stoped at once too. I read the user manual again & again, it is a simple designed machine, not rocket science, what could be wrong? It was Friday night, I could not get their technical support so I sent an email to them, they replied fast, but telling me they could do nothing, best way is return the merchandise.

As I said I need it badly, so I ordered the 2nd one, I thought the "Made in Germany" should not be that bad. I got it Friday again. This time I did the setup even more carefully, since I have the 1st time experience already, but the exact same problem happened again. What could be wrong? Anyone could help me before I return it again?

I cannot get a window unit due to my window size, and this unit came with a window kit that fit my windows. It worked absolutely perfect for 2 months. Then, on a particularly hot day, the bucket filled up with water and the unit shut off. I drained all the water, which is an absolute pain in the rear to do due to the drain being less than half an inch off the floor. The unit leaks water like a faucet ever since, all over the floor. There is really no effective way to use it anymore. I ordered a different brand that doesn't have water leakage issues. I should have listened to all the reviews I read. I practically paid several hundred dollars for a few months use. What a waste. The unit cools great, but what good is that with water all over your carpet? Stay away from this product.

UPDATE: The unit only leaks when moved. If the water reservoir fills up, and must be drained, the unit must be moved to do so because the drain plug is literally right on the floor and there is no pan or container you can get under it. The reservoir will fill eventually, the unit will have to be drained, will have to be moved, will leak. Once all the water leaks out that is going to leak the unit works great until its time to drain again. Like I said, it took 2 months before I had to drain, but this process was a major PIA. I would avoid this unit, but I still gave in another star because it does not leak except during the drainage process.

The best air conditioners are large central units that connect to a whole building HVAC. Since you're reading this review, it's likely that a central unit isn't a possibility for you like it wasn't for me. If you can put in a window unit, that is your next best bet but if that is not practical, you've got to go portable. You could get a nice fan or an air cooler but that's like taking the bus instead of driving. It's really not the same.

I have two portable air conditioners and both are made by Soleus. This is one of them and the other one is a 14,000 BTU unit. This one cools a 166 sq ft room that only needs to be cooled ten to fifteen degrees and it's more than powerful enough for that. It can bring the temperature down in fifteen minutes or so.

Portable air conditioners, until fans, need to have an unsightly and awkward tube connected to the window. These tubes are inevitable flimsy and don't fit well. They seem unacceptable unless the only alternate solution is to suffer in the heat and then suddenly they don't seem bad.

Soleus is perhaps the best portable air conditioner manufacturer. I haven't ever had a non-Soleus unit but I've heard horror stories about others. I've heard bad things about these too but I haven't had anything bad happen.

This is probably the smallest and cheapest good unit on the market so if 8000 BTU is enough for you, this is an excellent bet.

. . . if you're mindful of one limitation: it condenses lots of moisture into a limited capacity container, and will need to be emptied or drained. It's built low to the ground, so I put it up on a little platform and attached the short included plastic hose to the drain port and put a container under it to catch the "drip" (which when it is very hot and humid is really a "stream"!). Recognizing that limitation (discussed in previous reviews), I've avoided any problems and have been quite pleased with the product. It cools well and in my limited basement space where it is used, it does fine.

This works well for the particular conditions in which we're using it. We're happy with it. We live in northern California, where hot weather is usually also dry, and evenings are cooler. We put this in a bedroom that gets very hot during the day and doesn't cool down quickly enough at night. Instead of trying to fit the "window kit" into our old-fashioned window, we just leave the window slightly open with the end of the vent hose sticking out while the unit is running. We run it at bedtime and it cools the room down nicely. I gave it only four stars instead of five because of a couple of design flaws: (1) Though I don't expect that we'll have to deal with emptying the condensation tank much, if at all, it's true that the opening is awfully close to the floor, and I can see that in a more humid environment, where it would need emptying more often, it would be pretty awkward. I don't see why the designers couldn't have put the hole a little higher up so that you could actually get a pan or bowl under it. (2) The instructions said to keep the vent hose as straight as possible, but they put the vent hole at the bottom of the unit too. Most people don't have their windows at floor level, and putting this thing on a table or something would also be awkward, since it's so big and heavy (90 pounds, I think). That said, it works just fine for us sitting on the floor with a 90-degree bend in the hose, so I guess that's not such a big deal.

UPDATE: We've had it for almost a year now and are still satisfied with it. It gets the room nice and cool very quickly, and we have never yet had to empty the condensation tank. So that's not a big problem in a dry climate.

We live in a midcentury apartment building mid 20th century, that is. The building's central air unit has reliably failed during each heat wave we've lived through since moving in. This year, I'd had enough. We ordered the Soleus based on a couple of days of Internet research, and we bought from Amazon for ease of returns if that became necessary. The unit arrived short one panel for the screen-door vent adaptor. We emailed the manufacturerer and they promptly sent not one but two additional panels.

Then we had a few weeks when the building's main A/C was working. But sure enough, another heat wave and the central unit failed. This morning it was 78 degrees in the coolest room of our apartment. We rolled out the Soleus, assembled the vent panel and duct, and turned it on. Fifteen minutes later the room was 75 degrees.

This A/C unit is a bit noisy, but not really worse than the central A/C's fan unit in our apartment. We have the Soleus hooked up in the living room and venting out that patio door. A fan will push the cool air back to us in the bedroom.

78 degrees probably doesn't sound too bad, but when you are 46 and hormonally imbalanced, it's too hot for comfortable sleep. I consider the Soleus a good investment and would add that I was very happy with the fast and courteous handling of our missing-parts request to the manufacturer.

Had it for 5 months now ,works well,drys out the bathroom without overheating the room. Very noisy but ,run it during the day and it fills up nicely. The auto shut off works well also. Emptying it is a pain,that should have been engineered better. Then you have to slam it back in to put it back. I like the smaller size since these things are really heavy,but this wheels nicely into my other spaces if needed. My girl left her sunroof open one year and soaked her seats and when I bought this I wanted something I could pick up and dry out a car if needed! Hope that never happens again!This model was the newer one .Paid 189 5 months ago. Let it sit upright before turning it on. Very pleased so far.

The 41-year-old Westinghouse dehumidifier in my basement finally gave up the ghost early this summer. Because it was already very humid, I was desperate to get a new one ASAP. Apparently, so was everyone else in New England because I couldn't find a good one in the stores. Most had already sold out and the few that were left were brands with bad reputations for recalls, overheating, etc.

Based on reviews and word of mouth, I really wanted a Frigidaire. I should have ordered one online right away instead of trying to find one locally. Fortunately, I only had to wait a few days after I ordered, and it was worth the wait.

I put the Frigidaire on a sturdy table and hooked up a short hose to the outlet on the back of the unit. I put the other end of the hose in a nearby washtub and didn't have to wait very long for water to start trickling out of the hose.

Before I ordered the Frigidaire, I had tried another type of dehumidifier that uses thermoelectric/Peltier technology. The most moisture it could collect was two ounces in eight hours. I knew that wasn't enough, especially for what I had paid for it. In contrast, on a really humid day, the Frigidaire can collect a few ounces in just an hour. And since it's going into the sink, I don't ever have to empty a bucket.

As for the noise it may depend on your point of reference. My 41-year-old Westinghouse was quieter, but it was also less efficient and less powerful. On the other hand, all of my air conditioners are window units, and they're louder than the dehumidifier, especially when the compressor in the air conditioner cycles on and off. I WISH they sounded like the dehumidifier.

At least the quality of the sound coming from this dehumidifier isn't annoying. It's not high-pitched and it doesn't rattle. It's more like a steady hum.

What surprised me more is the exhaust. For all I know, maybe this is typical of modern dehumidifiers: it blows out of the top, creates a fairly stiff breeze, and it's warm. (Maybe it's only warm when the basement is warm. I don't know.) I don't remember the Westinghouse doing that. There was some exhaust, but it blew straight out the back and wasn't as noticeable. This is definitely noticeable. It's not a problem, but I wouldn't want to keep it around loose papers or flimsy window-curtains.

I bought this unit for my Mother's basement because I really like the Frigidaire 50 pint I bought for my home about 2 years ago.

Both remove moisture well. The "older" design, however was better: the fan shoots the air out the side, which circulated the air into the far corners of the basement. This "newer" design blows the air upward, which I don't care for. I sometimes wonder if the people who design things actually use them because some of the changes make no sense to me.

Still, this unit works well to remove moisture. Although it's not quiet, due to the powerful fan, I don't need quiet for the basement.

This unit replaces an LG piece of junk bought thru Sears in '04.

Another nice feature, this Frigidaire does not ice up in the cold basement, like the LG did.

This DeLonghi DD45P Dehumidifier is so far advanced over other dehumidifiers I have owned over the past 15 to 20 years, it is like a newly invented appliance for 2010.

It's the pump stupid! Why haven't all dehumidifiers been designed with automatic pumps from the get-go? Did appliance designers think that a homeowner would gladly trade a dry basement for the chore of emptying a bucket of water every day?

The initial set-up was relatively easy after I read the instructions twice. The controls are understandable and fairly intuitive.

This is a smart dehumidifier compared to the older manual dumbbells I have owned. The display reads your room temperature. The unit can be set on auto, to run until it brings the humidity level in percent numbers down to a level you decide. It can be set to run for a selected time period or just run continuously at one of its two different speeds, high and not quite as high. It has delayed start and delayed stop if desired. If you choose to not pump the condensate to a nearby drain or out the window, don't turn on the pump, and it will fill its built-in bucket instead. All this and energy star rated to boot.

The pump works well. The supplied condensate hose, which is 3/8" OD clear vinyl, runs up a corner wall in my basement about 8ft, then about 8ft more along the ceiling of my adjoining laundry room, and 4ft down into a laundry tub. I did have to add 8ft more hose to make the distance, but the pump handles it all very nicely. I bought this model for the pump and I consider this purchase as one of my better moves. It has been running 24/7 for about 6 weeks, and I just forget its there. My fingers are crossed.

The only negative features (in my opinion) are that the hose for the pump comes out the front of the unit near the base and the tiny wheels don't lift the unit high enough up off the floor to run the condensate hose under the unit towards the back so its not so visible.

My current DeLonghi (40 pt) has gone on the fritz so I bought the newest model DD45P. The sensors on the old one (6 years old) have gone wacko, and the defroster (heater coil) seems constantly engaged, thereby pumping out super heated air... not good during the summer months here in the Northeast where 90 degrees+ has become the norm. The new DeLonghi arrived last week and has a more compact design than the old one, seems to be performing well, however, the 2 speed fan is problematic to me. DeLonghi should have stayed with the 3 speed fan as on the older models; that would REALLY have improved the "quiet" factor. Also the 24 hour timer feature is laughable... please, for this price, let me program more than one block of time. I love the pump, however, as an owner of a previous model who has taken the old one apart, be warned that what is growing inside the older unit has got to be unhealthy!!!! Yuk! If only replacement parts were made available at a reasonable price, my old one could be kept working! I need 2 for my large basement area, so I think I will be buying an additional one of a different brand to see if it performs any more efficiently and lasts longer!

The unit itself works great, except...

When I was researching dehumidifiers, the description of the DD45P said it has a 24-hour timer. I was under the assumption that I could program it, for example, to run for 8 hours, stop for 8 hours, run for 8, stop for 8, etc. In other words once I programmed it would maintain that cycle continuously until I turned off or changed the timer. My previous LG dehumidifier worked that way; I could program a continuous cycle. But not the DD45P. The program works for just once cycle; you have to reprogram it at the end of the cycle if you want it on timer again. And that's not the worst. You program it to start when the unit is in off mode; enter the number of hours after which you want the unit to turn on. However, to enter the number of hours after which you want it to turn off, you must wait until the unit turns on. You can only enter minimum increments of 1/2 hour for both on and off. So here's the scenario: Go down to the basement (where most people keep their dehumidifier), program it to start in 1/2 hour, go back upstairs, go back downstairs 1/2 hour later to program the turn off time. Repeat this daily or multiple times during the day if that's what you want. Of course you can run it without a timer; it then runs 24/7. But for energy-saving purposes a continuous timer would be nice.

Also,the unit has a timer which you can only program the run time i.e. (turn the unit on. program the length of time you would like it to run and then it shuts off.It will not turn on again until you manually turn it on). I think a clock that you could program the on/off times would be a better feature.

DEHUMIDIFYING ABILITY: Absolutely fantastic. It has lowered the humidity in my downstairs (roughly 1000 sq. ft) from 65% to 45% in roughly an hour at 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

NOISE: It has a low and high speed. On low, it sounds like a pedestal oscillating fan on high. On high, it sounds like a typical window air conditioning unit on high. I know these are inexact measurements, but what I am trying to convey is the noise does not bother my wife and I at all.

EASE OF USE: I am a technically inclined person, but I can't see anyone having any difficulty operating this unit. There is a power button, timer button (for delayed start and shutoff), Pump (for toggling between tank and pump modes), Humidity + and -, and display button. Pretty self explanatory what all of these buttons should do.

FEATURES: The built in pump works fantastic, and the ability to use it in tank (manually empty tank) and free drain mode makes it universal for all consumers. My biggest (only really) complaint about this unit, is the timing function which I will discuss below:

TIMER FUNCTION: This feature is pretty terrible. You can only set the unit to shut itself off on a delay when it is currently running or have it delay starting when it is currently off. There is NO scheduling an on and off time and certainly no days of the week settings. This will be a deal breaker for a lot of customers, however I am able to simply turn it on several times per week manually.

CONCLUSION: If the unit had even had a basic 1 day on/off scheduling timer, I would give it 5 stars. Overall, the price for what you get it good especially when you consider it has a built in pump.

I love the concept, but think the design of this fan could be better.

Aside from sitting in the shade of a tall tree with a breeze, water misters are the most effective way to stay cool outdoors in the summer. Misters are usually intended for use in dry climates (like Arizona). However, I find that they are still extremely effective in humid climates, if done properly. If you want to be comfortable outdoors in the summer, I recommend looking into getting a misting fan.

My gripe with this fan is due to a sub-optimal design. The fan doesn't move enough air far enough (it spreads the air to the sides instead of throwing a column of air straight ahead). The misters put out too much water (you get soaked) and don't have any way of regulating how much they put out. Each misting nozzle puts out about 1/4 cup of water per minute. The fan comes with 4 misting nozzles, so it sprays 1 cup of water per minute (this WILL soak you!). Read my hacks below to make this fan work better.

PRO's:

Water misting with a breeze is the best way to keep cool in the hot summer

Water misting hose is reasonably long

Electrical cord is reasonably long, but shorter than the hose

Fan is weather resistant, so it can be left outdoors

Misting nozzles are removable, so you can unclog them if they ever get clogged

Oscillating fan spreads out the mist a bit more, so it doesn't soak just one area

CON's:

No way to adjust how much water flows (1 cup of water per minute) (the fan should have come with stoppers to replace the sprayers with, so you can control how many nozzles are firing)

Fan does not move the air far enough, so most of the water it sprays falls within a few feet of the fan

Short stand (only about 3 feet tall)

Fan vertical swivel doesn't have enough degree of movement (can't point it up far enough) and it seems to move in increments (I think it's notched to fall into positions)

Stand wobbles due to loosely fitting parts

Misting nozzles have clips that don't hold onto the fan cover very well

Misting nozzles and hose seem to be delicate (if you accidentally tug on it, it will probably break)

HOW TO MAKE IT WORK BETTER (THIS IS PURELY MY OPINION)

Here are a few hacks that I think will make this fan work better (but it probably voids your warranty). I am not suggesting you try these; these are just my thoughts on what would make it better.

1. Prevent the stand from wobbling:

The stand comes as three pieces that slide into each other. However, the tapered end of each pipe that slides into another is tapered too much, so it wobbles.

To prevent it from wobbling, simply place a toothpick on the tapered end, so it wedges in between the loose pipe parts.

2. Clog 3 of the 4 misting nozzles, so it sprays only 1/4 cup of water per minute:

A 1/4 cup of water per minute is a good amount of mist -it will keep you cool, but not soak you. The idea is to spray a fine mist onto your skin, so the breeze evaporates it away, taking body heat along with it. It should not soak you!

To clog the nozzles, I unscrewed the last three nozzles in the chain of nozzles. Then, I cut a small piece of rubber from a rubber O ring with the diameter just slightly wider than the hollow core of the nozzle. I sanded the tip of the small piece of rubber to a small point, so it's easier to insert into the nozzle shaft. Using pliers, I twisted the piece of rubber into the nozzle's shaft. Twisting makes it easier to force it in, since the rubber will stretch itself thin as you twist it. Note: I put the rubber into the metal nozzle head, not the base it connects to. Then I screwed the nozzle head back into the base. So, the clogged nozzle essentially acts as a stopper. The piece of rubber sticks out of the rear of the nozzle a tiny bit, so I can always remove it if I need to.

3. Position the misting nozzles to get best spray coverage:

Assuming you clogged three of the four nozzles to reduce the amount of water sprayed, your next objective should be to get the water mist to travel as far as possible, so it cools off everything in its path. Normally, you would think that positioning the spraying nozzle at the top of the fan would give you the furthest reach. However, the air coming out of the fan twists as it comes out. So if you put a nozzle at the top of the fan (the 12 o'clock position), the mist gets picked up by the airstream and twists towards the ground (kind of like a curve ball).

Through some trial and error, I found that the best position of the misting nozzle is at the 8 o'clock position on the face of the fan, about half way out from the center. If you put the misting nozzle there, the air stream picks it up and actually projects it upwards before twisting it over and to the right. By the time it completes that loop, the twisting air spiral is no longer twisting, so it simply carries the mist forward. I found this positioning gets the furthest reach.

4. Move the fan blades forward in the housing to get better airflow:

The fan sits inside of a housing that is too wide at the rear and gets narrow at the front. The fan sits inside the wide housing. This causes some of the air to not flow through the opening at the front, but to instead, circle back around through the fan again. In my opinion, the optimal position is such that the outer edge of the fan is close its housing so the air can't bleed away from the edge. You can position the fan blades a little bit forward to reduce some of the air bleeding, but it's still not far enough.

To move the fan blades forward, use a Phillips screw driver to remove the fan cage from the front of the fan. Then, use a small Allen wrench to loosen the screw that locks the fan blade onto the motor shaft. Slide the fan blade forward about an inch (don't go more than that, otherwise the lock screw won't have anything to lock onto). Re-tighten the locking screw to secure the blade onto the motor shaft. Put the fan cage back on with the screws.

This puts the fan a bit closer to the inside of the ring on the cage that's slightly larger than the fan blades, and reducing bleeding from the edge of the fan blade. It should cause the fan to move a little more air.

I hope you find these tips informative. These are just my personal hacks and I doubt they're recommended or supported by the manufacturer -that is, you're on your own if you try these.

We recently had a small family gathering of about 20 people, 10 of whom are kids. A few days before the party, we found out it was going to be in the 90s and humid that day, and wondered what we could do to make being outside more comfortable and not have the kids running in and out of the house to cool down. We started researching misting fans, but by that time, it was too late to order anything online (ordinarily, Amazon is the place I would start), so I ran around town looking for a misting fan. Home Depot, Sam's Club, Target and Menard's all came up empty, then I broke down and went to Wal-Mart. After specifically asking an employee if they had misting fans, being told no, and deciding to look for myself, I found the Holmes Indoor/Outdoor Fan with Misting Kit tucked away in a corner. I got it home, put it together in about 3 minutes and was enjoying the cooling effects of my new purchase in no time. The misting kit easily snaps onto the grates on the fan and the 4 nozzles do a pretty good job of spreading the mist there is about a 10-foot projection of misting/cooling, and the oscillator rotates on a 220 degree arc., which makes the coverage area that much greater. It was also a big hit at the party my mother in law (who is dealing with hot flashes and lives in Alabama) was so impressed, that she wants one for herself. Also, regarding the unfortunate experience of one reviewer who had mist blown back into the fan and it quit working: we left ours outside last night and we got about a 1/4 inch of rain. I turned the fan on this morning and it worked like a charm. The motor is enclosed and the owners manual specifically says it's designed to be kept outdoors (during summer months of course). And while the height of the stand isn't adjustable, you can control the angle of fan "face" itself. So far, so good!

This is a great concept, but the second time we used it the wind blew the mist back into the fan and it immediately stopped working. I let it dry out and it began working again only to fail 2 hours later and I wasn't even using the mist..

I will say that Deerso, the company that ships it has been very professional and wonderful to deal with. They refunded my money immediately and couldn't have been nicer and more apologetic for the problem.

This was my second purchase of this fan, my first one is still working fine, but I wanted insurance! In the worst heat of summer, this fan makes the patio area at least 20 degrees cooler, and downright pleasant to be in! The fact that the mister hose cracked and leaked badly after only one season accounts for three stars instead of five. Our solution was to pick up one of those cobra-style misters, attach the garden hose, and put it right in front of the fan, which has held up beautifully in all kinds of weather. If you could buy the mister as a replacement item, it would definitely rate a five.
