Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I can actually breathe again and after going to an allergy doctor and a lung specialist this was a very welcome and much needed change for me. What I loved is you just take it out of the box and plug it in and you are good to go, great for people like me who are not that good at assembling things.

Unable to sleep at night I was desperate and since I had tried many different air cleaners/purifiers hoped this might be the one and it was.

The noise level is rather quiet compare to the two previous ones I owned.

What I like most is the choice of the three settings, high, medium and low and the fact you can time it. I don't use the timer but others might like this feature.

As long as it helps me breathe better and get some sleep compared to none prior to this unit I have nothing but praise for it.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program First off, I was concerned this would be noisy but it runs pretty quietly, which is a big plus. We have two allergy sufferers in our family, so it's definitely good to have an air purifier around. This one has three different speeds--high, medium, low--and an auto timer for up to eight hours.

I love the modern design and electronic control panel, as well as the size--pretty average without being small or big (28", about twelve pounds), and easy to move if needed. The air did feel cleaner while it was on.

The only thing it lacked was a remote control. It would have been nice to be able to change the settings and set the timer remotely. Another con is that you have to purchase replacement filters, when the indicator reflects so, which are not cheap.

**Addition to my review 7/2/13: Excellent to use in the summer. It really cools down the air and cleans it well. And the noise level is just right (I have it turned on all night, and actually found that I sleep better with it on). I had cheaper air purifiers previously, but found that this one is really the best of the best.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I use this purifier to keep the air in my office clean and allergen-free (I have pretty bad dust allergies). I can definitely tell it's working about a day after I got it up and running, the air in my office just *smells* cleaner, and no sneezing when I come in every morning.

When you first turn it on, it defaults to the High setting, which can be a bit noisy (for an office, at least), but the Medium setting is very quiet. I use the timer feature to just run it for the workday (it has 2, 4, 6, and 8 hour options). I haven't had to change the filter as yet I've probably got a few more months on it but they're not as inexpensive as I would like.

The only real complaint I could have with it is the construction. The plastic it's made of seems to be a bit cheap, but since you really just put it in the corner and leave it there, this isn't really an issue.

I've recommended this purifier, and I already have a co-worker who's purchased one for his office; he's just as happy with his as I am with mine.

Honest reviews on Black & Decker HEPAFreshTM Air Cleaner XL BXAP250 3 Speed HEPA

I was looking for an expensive tower type unit but dont recommend this one. This filter picks up some dust, but blows around the rest. Air is directed at an angle from the filter which may or may not be an advantage. Filter replacement costs are high, and not generic. It might be competitive at half the price,.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I have a cat. This product works well to solve the problem of my brother in law who's allergic to him. It clears out all the cat hair and dust and makes the room breathable. Living in NY, this really becomes useful. I recommend it to all. :)

The only negative is that the installation instructions are a little cryptic and the fan makes some noise at highest speed.

At low speed, it's silent. Appearance is great and performance is great too (so far!).

This is my first large humidifier and I may not be the best person to appreciate differences amongst brands. But I will give you a "layman's" impression.

When it first arrived I wasn't sure I was that impressed. It's a big piece of plastic, not exactly durable but it can last. The casing is cheesy imitation wood which I guess does the job. It reminds me of my parents' old wood paneling from the 70s although some people like this "rustic" appearance. The unit doesn't consist of much -a plastic basin, casters for it to move on the floor, a 2.5 gallon bottle that comes with a hose for filling up (nice addition), the fan assembly piece on top. My first thought was "now this produces a great profit margin."

Well, while that might be the case, I should compare it with the smaller humidifiers I've used that cost anywhere from $40-70. They are a little more intricate, have better precision, but this isn't a tremendous difference and the value for what it does is evidently much better. When it comes right down to it though, I wonder how much more effective this is than having a large pot of water and a fan, but somehow the entire 2.5 gallons evaporates pretty quickly over the course of a few hours.

Noise -quiet is not a word I'd use. Not sure what these people are talking about. On low speed it's noticeable, medium it's definitely noticeable, high speed is like a jet plane. I keep mine in a foyer of my apartment at mid speed and it's noisy but tolerable generally. At night you don't want this in your room when trying to sleep.

Overall it works. I'm still having humidity challenges in my dry apartment but this is probably better than the small machines. I'd give it 3.5 stars because of price to performance. Unsure how these differ from a "whole house" humidifier other than price since specs are the same.

I have had this unit for awhile and it does work. However it is made from very thin plastic and will not stand a simple bump without falling apart. I ordered some anti-bacteriostat from Essick and they sent a third of what I paid for and will not respond to my requests for an explaination.

Honest reviews on Essick Air H12-300 3-Speed Evaporative Console Humidifier, Light Oak

It comes assembled, but you need to disassemble to remove the packing. You would have to do this anyhow to clean it before first use, so this isn't a negative. Filled it with water and some anti-bacterial solution and turned it on. House went from 20% to 45% relative humidity within a day on medimum fan speed. The unit is upstairs in the largest part of a 3800 sq ft house. High fan speed is noisy. Medium is loud but bearable. Low is nearly silent. When you move air with a fan, you'll get noise. If you want a silent humidifier, you'll need to get one that is installed inline with your furnace/AC fan (spelled $$$).

Construction is basic... plastic. Some may say it's cheap, but I say it's easy to clean. Remove the fan housing (simply lift it off the base), remove the filter and you have a big plastic box that is easy to clean. I like it. Fan is also easy to access for cleaning.

I have another humidifier on it's way because I thought I would need two for a house this large. Probably could have gotten away with this one alone, but I'll run both on low fan speed and reduce the time they are on, indirectly increasing the life of each... I hope.

Worked well until the blower motor went out. It now gets hot when plugged in but will not spin. This product work well until it broke. now to get it replaced I must pay to have it packed and shipped back. Then they say they will test and if bad replace with me paying shipping. Just doesnt seem fair. I do not have the time to wait for testing so I am going to buy a different brand. maybe from a company that will send me a new product until they are able to verify what I a saying is true.

This works perfectly as an aid for air quality in my office. The Menthol Eucalyptus extract is also a great addition to the product and really kicks it up a notch. I would recommend this to anyone who has dry working conditions as well as a small bedroom. I'd say a full tank of water lasts 5-6 hours. The LED nightlight can be toggled on or off while the unit is operating and the auto-off function is a savior if I rush out of work without turning it off.

I've tested this unit 4 times in 2 different locations with a calibrated hygrometer and have the following information to pass along. Overall, it is easy to use and maintain. The water tank is simple to fill with either distilled or bottled purified water. To avoid possible problems, never carry the unit from place to place while the water tank is filled. Jostling a filled humidifier increases the chances of water getting into the fan workings and that can cause problems. Locate the base unit where you want it. Fill the water tank and screw the cap on. Carry the filled tank upside down to the base unit. Place the tank on the unit and it is ready to go. This little unit produces a nice stream of cool mist that can be directed by turning the dial rather than having to turn the unit. The unit will run for 4-5 hours with a full tank of water. So, for overnight or longer than 4-5 hour use, this unit is not sufficient. In testing the Vapor-Eze in a variety of situations, I found that it performs best as a personal space humidifier. It will raise the humidity about 5 degrees in a severely dry environment and will raise the humidity about 10 degrees in a moderately dry environment. I use the Vapor-Eze on my desk and it does a beautiful job of raising the humidity level of my personal space. Highly recommend this unit for short-term, personal space use.

Best Deals for Vapor-Eze 2760 Humidifer, White, Blue

This humidifier was a disappointment despite other positive reviews. When it worked, it only produced vapor for about three hours. Then it began this awful clicking noise that would wake us up at night instead of simply turning off. In addition, the cap for the tank broke off after only a month of use, leaving the humidifier useless. Definitely not worth the money.

Honest reviews on Vapor-Eze 2760 Humidifer, White, Blue

I have only had the Vapor-Eze 2760 for about three night now and it works very good. I found that I can get it to run for eight hours if I fill the container totally full and then add some water to the base of the humidifier. It just has a switch to turn it on, no adjustment for the mist and this is OK. It is a personal humidifier. It works very well for one person. The eucalyptus med. that comes with the humidifier works good, if you are breathing the mist from the humidifier. You can't smell it otherwise. And it does help my sinus. I ended up putting black electrical tape over the led. For me this is better, I don't need a night light that changes color.

I have been impressed since the time I opened the box that this humidor came in. It matches some of my black stained wood furniture perfectly and has been holding a perfect 70% humidity. I have an additional electronic hydrometer inside, so the glass is a nice touch. It holds a lot of cigars and it works as promised! Well worth twice the money in my opinion.

I recently received this humidor, and absolutely have no regrets about my purchase. The quality of this box is excellent with no signs of defects. The top closes properly and holds humidity levels perfectly. The design and eye appeal are amazing, and give this humidor the look of a much more expensive product. The black finish complements the black and nickel theme of my office, and instantly draws you to the humidor. The built-in hygrometer does not accurately display the correct humidity level, although this is common with most stock built-in hygrometers. I purchased this box in conjunction with a Xikar digital hygrometer and Boveda seasoning/humidity control packets to create an easy and functional home humidor system that keeps my cigars in great shape while doubling as a great art/conversation piece. Highly recommended!!

Bought this for my husband as a gift. Quality product for a great price. He uses it all the time and it looks very elegant.

Honest reviews on Glass-Top Humidor (75-100 Cigars)

I have had this humidor for over a year now and it is great. I love the glass top. it comes with 2 dividers for the bottom and 1 for the top tray. You can stack the top tray 3 deep pretty easy and the bottom 3-4 deep as well. The setup that it comes with is pretty akward as the humidifier is huge and takes up valuable cigar space. I tossed that and went with a jar of crystals and it holds right a 70. I recommend using the salt method to calibrate the gauge as it was a little off, but after adjusting it was all good. 75-100 capacity is pretty accurate with my setup, but as is subtract 10-20. I have about 100 in mine now. I seasoned mine with distilled water in a shot glass as opposed to wiping the inside. My buddies who wiped their other humidors had trouble with theirs.

A good case, the veneers used around the edges are a bit frail so extra care need be taken not to catch the edges when handleing but it works well and has made keeping my cigars easy. I like it! Looks good too.

We have only used our kettle for 3 days now, and although it really works in terms of letting off steam, it has a funny cast iron smell that goes along with it. Still a fun novelty piece, but certainly not the thing to do if you want a serious humidifier.

Following the installation of my beautiful new woodstove I shopped for a nice humidifying kettle to complete the project. I'm so happy I selected this kettle!

When my kettle arrived I had an unexpected surprise as the kettle's handle perfectly matches the handle on my stove.

While heavy duty, this kettle is not cumbersome and it fits neatly on top of my stove. This kettle provides plenty of eye-appeal without compromising efficient functionality.

My woodstove is beautiful but would be naked without this kettle on top!

We have been looking for a kettle for sometime while shopping in town and on trips. Never found one in our price range. So excited to see this online. Our disappointment is that it is already showing rust around the rim of the pot and where the lid meets that area. Any suggestions regarding this would be appreciated.

I guess my wood stove top doesn't get hot enough to boil the water. I have a pretty big wood stove. I am sure that if used on the smaller stoves it would get hot enough to steam, especially if it is only filled about half full.

I bought this to replace a Vicks Humidifier that I was sick of constantly buying expensive, short lasting filters on and it was on its last legs in function.

Very simple design on this. Use in bedroom and seems to humidify well enough. The filter that came with it was a floppy thing, that was very difficult to keep upright when putting the top back on after filling. I came to find out replacement filters have a plastic frame, which solves this issue. The filter otherwise would have lasted the full dry winter season for me. I use the bacteria treatment. That bottle will last a very long time! It is awkward to fill and needs to be filled every other night if run on low or every night if run on high. My biggest problem with this unit is how noisy it is. The fan rattles loudly and I HAVE to run it on low to sleep, even with earplugs in. The rattling comes and goes, but makes me want to get rid of it most nights.

I bought this humidifier because it had advertised its ability to humidify a fairly large space. I only needed it to cover a small area but in a large room. It has not lived up to its claims, as I cannot raise the humidity more than the high teens/low 20's, certainly too low a humidity to be comfortable. I guess the old adage, "You get what you pay for!" rings true with humidifiers as well as most everything else in life.

Review of Frigidaire FAD704DUD 70 Pt. Dehumidifier

Frigidaire FAD704DUD 70 Pt. Dehumidifier
Customer Ratings: 4 stars
Buy Now
I bought mine at the local big-box home improvement store. It is used in my heated basement, which I want extra-dry as my firearms and other sensitive items are stored there.

After six months it started making a lot of noise. I checked it and found that the cooling coils were completely iced up, totally blocking the air flow. I let it defrost completely and tried again, with the same icing resulting after a few hours. I checked the manual. which gave "room temperature is too low" as the cause. Doubtful, I thought, but it is winter and only about 60 degrees in here. So I waited to spring and tried again. Now there is no cooling effect at all, and no water output. Obviously the icing was from the cooling fluid leaking, and finally it all leaked out resulting in the total lack of operation.

This is my second Frigidaire dehumidifier. The first had a fan motor failure after six months.

Obviously Frigidaire is no longer synonymous with quality.

By the way, it is not possible to contact Frigidaire customer service by their 800 number. The option for "speak to a representative" results in the computer giving a long-distance number to call. On previous occasions, I have had no luck with trying to contact them via their web site, either. However I tried again, this time requesting return contact by telephone.

This time they actually responded, but by email despite my request for contact by phone. The response was "I would like to offer you a 60% rebate towards a new unit." My response to that was, quoting the manual, "The unit has a FIVE YEAR WARRANTY period during which 'Frigidaire will repair or replace any part in the Sealed Refrigeration System....,' so why should I have to pay 40 percent?"

Their reply: "We apologize we will not be able to arrange service for your dehumidifier. Regrettably, escalating service costs have rendered repairing dehumidifiers a thing of the past as these units are no longer serviced.

Please let us know if you wish to accept the rebate offer so we may assist with issuing a rebate letter outlining details of the rebate as soon as possible. Please also note that not only will you receive the 60% rebate but as an added bonus when you receive the new dehumidifier the warranty will start over again from day one."

I wrote them again, requesting that they honor their written warranty. They replied "Thank you for contacting Frigidaire. We apologize that we are not able to assist."

In other words, they are refusing to honor the written warranty in the owner's manual. I have filed a complaint with the FTC, but expect little assistance since I am just a single citizen.

It is not only Frigidaire's product quality that is suffering....

Update, 06/24/2011: At N. Ha's suggestion (see comments on this review), I complained to the BBB in Georgia, where the Frigidaire humidifier service center is located per the manual. Today I received a phone call from Electrolux about my complaint. The woman said they wanted to "buy my unit back" for the full amount I had paid for it. She refused to call this a refund. However, she said I do not have to ship this unit they are buying to them, only the label with the model and serial number plus my original receipt. I guess calling it a refund might set a precedent. I, of course, accepted the offer and am awaiting the paperwork.

So, it looks like the only way to get satisfaction for the written warranty they have unilaterally decided to cancel for all current and future customers is to complain to the BBB. I hope many will do so.

This unit sucks water from the air by the gallons. I set it up in my finished basement and right out of the box it worked great. So well, in fact, I needed to empty the large capacity tank too often. So I opened up the back hose valve, connected a short garden hose and pointed it to the floor drain. The unit kept filling up the tank and did not drain out the hose :-(. It appears that the hose drain in the back just works on gravity--there's no pump. So if the floor is not level and/or if the hose is a little narrower than the male connector on the back of the unit (as most are) the water will not drain through the hose the valve. The fault is poor product design. To remedy, I bought a right-angle PVC adapter, barb adapter and clear tubing (to visually see whether it was working) from Flex PVC.com. Parts: "508-007 FGH by .75 FPT (female NPT) 90degree", "PPN46 3/4 mpt x 1/2 barb adapter", and "1/2 x 5/8 Clear Tubing BTF". The right angle adapter is large and maintains the 3/4" garden hose opening from end to end. Once assembled and attached I experimented and found the correct position for the dehumidifier which is on a slightly uneven floor. Now the water drains through the hose (which I can watch through the clear hose) and it works as it should. Frigidaire should provide this setup to all users that need to use the hose valve in the back until they fix the design issue. I keep the unit running continuously and it gives off more heat than I would like, heating up the basement which is usually cool in the summer. But it's somewhat unavoidable with this technology so I will take heat over humidity. I've added an image of my setup to the product images for visual reference.

Best Deals for Frigidaire FAD704DUD 70 Pt. Dehumidifier

I owned the previous version of this dehumidifier (Frigidaire Dehumidifier, 70-Pint Capacity, FAD704TDP) and the compressor failed in just over 1.5 years. I was disappointed by this, but it was not unexpected. My previous research of customer comments on both amazon.com and Consumer Reports indicated that failure in 1.5 years is now the norm for dehumidifiers! (I wonder whether the new government regulations have anything to do with this FYI, they now prohibit the use of FREON and the failures in a couple of years started after that; previously dehumidifiers lasted 10 or more years). Note that everyone who wrote reviews in 6 month or less after purchase was very pleased with the dehumidifiers in general (as was I), but reviews written 6 or 12 months after purchase started to complain about failures (compressor mostly). Very disppointing since all my previous dehumidifiers lasted well over 10 years; and one of them is still working fine. But I needed a dehumidifiier and this one semed to be the best of a not very good set of choices, so I ordered it. I was very pleased with it when it arrived and it worked great until if failed. I rated it 5 stars and updated my review several times until it failed whereupon I downgraded it to 4 stars. You can see my full review of that model on amazon.com.

But now I needed another one. I redid much of my research of customer comments and came up with the same conclusion that failure in 1.5 years was the norm and that this model was the best of the lot. So, I decided to get the same one again. When I looked at the model on amazon.com, there was a note that said "Would you like to see a newer version of this model?". I clicked on it and THIS model came up. Everything in the name and model number was the same (it even looked the same), except the "TDP" is replaced by "DUD" (I got a chuckle out of this given my previous experience with it's failure). So I odered it ... and I've now had it for about a month.

And here is my review to date: In summary, I give it 5 stars again, and I'll try to update this review in about 6 12 month intervals regarding the compressor and/or other failures.

Most noticeable are differences from the previous model which indicates some very significant improvements:

FIRST, it is amazingly quiet! In fact it was so quiet that I wondered whether the compressor was even working. I disconnected the drain hose (I use a gravity drain) to see whether the bucket would fill up. It did so in just a few hours! I would support the claim for 70 pts in 24 hours. The old model was quite noisy and, although in a different part of the basement, interfered with listening to the TV in the basement rec room. Not the case for this model.

SECOND: The exhaust for this model is out the TOP! Not out the back as in most older models, or the side as in the previous version of this one. How novel ... very unlikely to have an obstruction out the top and that also significantly aids in the air circulation. I wonder why no one ever though of this before. The squirrel cage fan now exhausts directly up and that may have something to do with it's quiet operation.

THIRD: The hose attachment for the gravity drain is now outside of the case and very easy to get to. It was very difficult to attach the hose in the previous version.

FOURTH: It was less expensive than the older model, which is also still available on amazon.com.

Overall, I am very pleased with this model ... I just hope it lasts.

I'll update this revew periodically, indicating whether the compressor is still working or when it finally fails.

UPDATE (4/23/2012): It is still working! Actually, it was OFF most of the winter. There seems to be an "unadvertised feature" that turns the unit completely off when the humidity is well below the desired setting. I did not see this descibed anywhere in the manual (maybe I just missed it). If the humidity is only a little below the desired setting, the compressor is off, but the fan that circulates the air is still on; when the humidity drops further, that fan also turns off (I have not been able to determine how much lower). This is a nice feature and probably makes the entire unit last longer. On the previous version of this model, the compressor cycled off and on all winter long and the fan ran contantly.

Some people have commented to me that the gravity drain does not work and the bucket fills with water. You have to make sure that the unit is LEVEL since there is a very small lip at the back that allows the water to go over it into the gravity drain. When the water cannot go over the lip, it goes into the bucket a very nice feature to keep it from flooding your floor. But if the unit leans even slightly forward, the the water cannot go over the lip and into the gravity drain. So level it carefully or put some shims under the front until it drains correctly.

It has gotten a little noisier now; but not objectionable.

And I checked the label: it is made in China.

UPDATE (4/30/2013): Another year has gone by and it is still working great! All the above comment still apply. I did not touch the humidity setting and the unit turned itself off last fall and was not running all winter (not the compressor nor the fan). About mid April it turned itself back on. I really do like this feature!

UPDATE (6/20/2013) WELL, IT FAILED!! Purchased 6/15/2011, put into service 6/21/2011 almost exactly TWO YEARS; I was really hoping that my analysis of the life expectancy of dehumidifiers was wrong. Here are some details about the failure. As I stated on the 4/30/2013 update, the unit turned on just fine as the humidity rose earlier this spring. I had set the humidity to 55% and it kept it there for a number of weeks. In early June, I noticed that the humidity reading was 70% even though it was still set to 55%; but the unit seemed to be running OK. I detached the gravity drain to catch the condensate in the bucket to determine if it was still working. It filled 1/2 of the bucket but no more. I emptied it and it never again collected any condensate. I determined that the fan was running and the compressor turned on when the humidity setting was below the humidity level in the basement. This seems to imply the refrigerant was not working, maybe there is a leak. If so, this would be hard to diagnose and fix.

UPDATE (6/25/2013: FALSE ALARM IT STILL WORKS! [I left the above comment in case anyone runs into this].

This morning I intended to get the serial number of the unit to call customer service. I while doing this I heard a water drip how can that be if it is not working? I examined it carefully and found that the evaporator coils were completely frozen over when I looked into the front of the unit thru the grate, all I could see was white. I turned the humidity setting up so that only the fan ran and quickly melted all the ice. I then lowered the humidity setting and it now works fine; filled the bucket in less than a day. Will reconnect the gravity drain.

I'm not sure how to prevent this from happening again without checking the unit regularly and shutting off the compressor until the ice melts. I will try setting the humidistat to just lower than the ambient humidity in the hope that it does not ice up. Once it gets to THAT humidity level without icing up, I'll turn it down one notch (ie, 5%) and repeat. Hopefully that works.

I also found a note I had written on the manual which I had completely forgotten about. Here it is, written on about 6/26/2011), since it is may still be relevant: "When it arrived via FEDEX (they left it by the garage and left before I came out to see it). The package was SEVERELY DAMAGED, so bad that I did not open it, but took several pictures and called FEDEX to complain. They suggested that I open it and see if anything was damaged. I did, examined it all carefully and nothing was amiss." So I forgot to even mention this in the original version of this review.

Honest reviews on Frigidaire FAD704DUD 70 Pt. Dehumidifier

I freely admit that this review is inspired as much by the opportunity to experiment with posting a video as by a desire to provide something useful. Still, you may find some help here.

Two things will be obvious: first, I'm clearly no videographer; second, this is a pretty good product.

In the space of about 3-1/2 min. this video will

1. walk you through a typical use case in a basement,

2. show you how to use the dehumidifier, and

3. offer a simple (and in many cases, cost-free) way of connecting the dehumidifier to a floor drain.

I hope you find this useful.

Many people use a dehumidifier in a basement, but I use it to prevent mildew in a Florida home. The humidity is nearly always high here, and mildew can form indoors in the winter when the A/C is not on. A dehumidifier this size does a pretty good job for the whole house if the central A/C fan is turned on to circulate air.

NOISE: I have read various opinions about the noise level. It is quite a bit louder with high fan speed than with low. The capacity and efficiency (see below) are about the same with either speed, so low speed is a good choice for occupied rooms.

My impression is that I definitely notice the noise, even on low fan speed, but it is not loud enough to disrupt conversation. The noise is mostly just from the flow of air, which is less annoying that the buzzing or rattling noises some dehumidifiers make.

CONTINUOUS DRAIN: Some people have reported problems with using a garden hose for continuous draining. I think the problem is that the narrow fittings in some hoses create a "dam" that makes the water back up and spill over into the bucket. I put a garden hose "Y" adapter on the back of the dehumidifier and connected the hose to the side pointing downward. It drains perfectly into the hose with this arrangement. I did not need the manufacturer's drain modification kit.

The drain hose should have a continuous downward or horizontal slope. Otherwise bubbles can form in the hose and block the flow.

AUTO-RESTART: This model will restart automatically after a power failure, so it is suitable for use in an unoccupied home.

EFFICIENCY: Dehumidifiers use a lot of electricity. This model uses about 700 watts while it is running. In the continuous run mode, it will use 500 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per month, which typically costs around $55.00. Electricity use will be less in the normal mode with the unit cycling on and off as needed.

The Energy Star "Energy factor" rating for this model (from energystar.gov) is 1.8 liters per kWh. That means it will remove 1.8 liters of water from the air for each kilowatt-hour of electricity used. Higher numbers mean lower electricity costs. 1.8 is the lowest energy factor that will qualify for Energy Star approval and is fairly typical.

As an engineer, I have the necessary equipment to test the energy factor myself. I was able to confirm the published Energy factor. At 80 degrees F and 60% relative humidity, I measured these energy factors:

Low fan speed: Energy factor = 1.81

High fan speed: Energy factor = 1.88

CAPACITY: Capacity is a measure of how much moisture the dehumidifier can remove from the air per day. My measurements came close to the manufacturer's rating. This model has about the same capacity on either low or high speed. At 80 degrees F and 60% relative humidity, I measured:

Low fan speed: Capacity = 65 pints per day

High fan speed: Capacity = 68 pints per day

HUMIDITY CONTROL: I think this is the weakest feature and the reason I did not give this model 5 stars. You can set the unit to maintain a relative humidity anywhere between 35% and 85%. 60% is usually adequate to prevent mildew. Setting it lower will just use more electricity.

Unfortunately, this model's humidity sensor is apparently inside the case where it is affected by the wet cooling coils. This causes it to cycle on and off about every 10 minutes, even when the humidity in the room is lower than the point you set. After the fan shuts off, the dampness inside the case causes the unit to start again after 1 or 2 minutes. It then runs a few minutes, shuts off, and the cycle repeats. The constant on-off cycling wastes electricity and probably shortens the life of the dehumidifier, although these effects are hard to quantify.

My solution is to set the dehumidifier in the continuous run mode and use an external dehumidistat (Honeywell H46C from Home Depot) to turn its AC power on or off as required. This prevents the constant on-off cycling and allows the dehumidifier to run only when it is actually needed.

HEAT: Dehumidifiers put out a lot of heat. I definitely notice that it warms up the room.

very simple steam humidifier. You should be aware of the types of humidifier and not be suprised at the hot steam and potential of accidental burns. If you have small child, you should not own this.

Pros:

Steam= no white dusts, no filters to change, bacterias are "boiled" off.

Stylish= no toy looking controls, no clear blue medical looking canisters

auto shut off when water is depleted

cons:

All plastic material shell(including the feet): now, I'm not sure if the outshell being metal is a good thing. It can potentially be a metal toaster oven if its made out of metal. Plastic does have a certain smell.. if you ever used a plastic electric water boiler, it smells just like that.

Designed in Swiss but made in China: don't be fooled by the swiss style design, this baby is geniue made in china.

The plastic chute is extremely hot, you can't touch that thing while the steamer is operating. Have to be careful.

Price: You are paying for the style, not functionality.

conclusion: only good if you want a steamer type humidifier and are turned off by cheap looking Vicks style steamer.

I don't write reviews often, but am really upset that I wasted so much money on this humidifier. My husband got this for me because I have frequent nose bleeds from the dry air. We used it for one week and was pleased with it because it was so quiet. I didn't like the hassle of having to take it apart daily to refill the water, but put up with it because it was cute. On the eighth day, I tried to turn it on but it wouldn't work. At all. The little blue light didn't even turn on. I took it apart and found a bunch of calcified deposits. The company states that it wasn't covered under the warranty because the instructions state that it should be "cleaned often." We had only used it for one week. Only buy this product if you are willing to take it apart and clean it almost daily (waste of time) because this poorly constructed piece of equipment is otherwise a huge waste of money. On a side note, we bought another product from them, the Max space heater. Although it still works, it doesn't work very well unless you're sitting about a foot away from it. We got another space heater that was about the same price and works infinitely better. I'm through with their products.

I bought this humidifier several years ago mainly because it was the only humidifier I ran across that didn't look like some big, plastic, medical equipment. It has work really well. The design is great! Super easy to fill and clean without a ton of parts. While it doesn't recede completely, it is at least whimsical and fun and like all Swizz designs, elegant and clean.

If you are looking for a relatively basic but very stylish humidifier, Fred is the perfect choice. Fred is warm air humidifier with a few basic buttons which glow a futuristic blue at night. Most humidifies in this price range have more functions and larger water tanks, but look designed for a drab hospital. Although made of plastic, Fred feels very sturdy and solid. As far as humidifiers go, it looks cool. You won't need to hide it.The only complaint is the water container only last for 4 hours on high and 8 hours on low.

I wanted this humidifier forever and was so excited when it arrived!

Very first night i used it the lid filled up with condensation then poured out the bottom onto my dresser. Took it apart, dried it out and planned to try one more time with a towel under it. No go, its completely dead & wont even power on.

Its very cute, but not even as functional as a vase because it leaks. For what it costs thats completely unnaceptable.

Honeywell Universal Carbon Pre-Filter 38002 (2-pack) by FUSA Reviews

Honeywell Universal Carbon Pre-Filter 38002 by FUSA

Update 5/6/2013:

After contacting the vendor and explaining my dis-satisfaction with the product that was initially delivered to me I was sent the correct OEM filters at no additional cost. The customer service representative I spoke with had been told and relayed to me that they had no control over the product photo that is displayed on the Amazon.com product page. However, at the time of this update, I noticed that the product photo HAS changed and is no longer one of the OEM product carton that I saw when placing my order. IMHO the description "Honeywell Universal Carbon Pre-Filter 38002 (2-pack) by FUSA" should be more forthcoming about the fact that this is an aftermarket product beyond the addition of "by FUSA" to the OEM like description.

Original Review:

I purchased this Carbon activated pre-filter from this vendor after comparing several similar listings on and off amazon.com. I made my selection based on the following criteria:

1.) I wanted OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts to keep my HEPA filter operating for it's full lifespan of 1-3 years as the replacement for that is **EXPENSIVE**.

2.) Multiple filters in box for value, sustainability, and convenience.

3.) Pricing and product number and description on vendor's web-site matched Honeywell's product guide and what is displayed on Amazon.com.

What I received was definitely not even close to OEM in design.

* The fibers of the material were much coarser and the build-up was thinner than the OEM one it replaced; this may allow for larger particles to pass thus quickly clogging my expensive HEPA filter.

* I had to trim away almost 40% of the filter to make it fit my HEPA filter. Lots of waste = not sustainable.

* It doesn't seem to remove odors from the air as well as the OEM pre-filter.

When purchasing a product that is not OEM the quality should always be viewed as suspect unless you have confidence in the source. The product that was shipped to me came in a box for a completely different filter model and type. The filters were shrink wrapped with only a generic warning sticker about how to safely discard the wrapper.

So you ask "if you knew it wasn't what you ordered why didn't you just return it?". Unless you are an allergy sufferer you can't appreciate the fact that adding another 10 days of suffering to you life is not an option. The cost versus benefit thoughts don't even enter your mind. This is exactly what unscrupulous vendors prey upon especially when it comes to products that consumers rely on for general health and relief (think about how convenience stores charge $3.00 or more for a package containing 2 aspirin).

Amazon.com needs to address these abuses of consumer trust or face the consequences of losing their "Domain Authority" in search engine results (this is partly because you may click on the amazon.com result first even though they don't float to the top of the non-paid "organic" results).

This is not my first amazon.com purchase and probably won't be my last but it has shaken my confidence with the marketplace company I thought I understood. Amazon.com has state-of-the-art warehouses all around the country that are used to expedite the delivery of many products. Why not list on their product pages or allow a filtering of results for items shipped from those locations and are verified to be what they are being marketed as?!?! I would actually pay them a fee with my purchase for doing such a service. Anyone!?!?

The pre-filters arrived within a week and are just what we needed for our air cleaners. We have the biggest air cleaner and these filters work perfectly without having to be cut down. We will be ordering them again as needed.
