If you want to save some money simply take out the filters and soak them in white vinegar and some hot water for about 15 minutes (or longer if very dirty). You will hear some fizzing from the chemical reaction (like if you put vinegar and baking soda together). Then...presto! It was clean like new!

You don't need it. I bought a Sunbeam SCM2401 table top humidifier at a local store. It worked fine for 3 days, then the little filter meter became pinned at the "Change" side, showing that the filter wick was dirty, and the humidity in my room was only 20%. Sure enough, the wick was totally dry, and there was a line of rust at the water line. So I washed the wick under running water, and scrubbed it with a brush. That restored it for only a few hours. OK, so I'll just buy a replacement wick. What?!! $6 and up? For a piece of cotton? The whole humidifier only cost $18! I lived in my dry apartment for several days, and then had an idea: Paper towels are very absorbent. What if I took 2 squares of paper towel and folded them around the old wick, like a U-shaped sandwich, so that the paper towel dipped under the water level and up the sides? This worked, and has kept working for 4 days now. The paper towel AND the wick now stay completely soaked, the little meter is happily in the "Good" zone, and my room humidity is a comfortable 38% (it's winter, and the humidifier is on MAX). When the paper towel gets rusty, I can just replace it for a few cents. Cheap, convenient, and "green"!

Nice to find these; they seem to be getting harder to find. I did not have to use them this year as the weather was so mild --but they will keep:)

I've owned my humidifier for years, and I could count on replacing filters 2, maybe 3 times per season. These new filters seem to dry up and calcify (so they won't take up water) much more often. I'm not even through the winter humidifier season and I've had to change them 5 times.

Bottom line, I think whoever is now manufacturing these filters is using some other material. They don't work very well for me

We've had this humidifier for 5 years anyway, and

These filters work great lasting a long Time. Price is right too

These "filters" wick up the water from the tray in which the water tanks sit and into which the tanks release the water. The unit's fan sucks air through these wick-filters and blows the moistened air out the top. So even if you clean the humidifier tanks and tray regularly and well, these "filters" are necessary for the humidifier to function properly. If they are not changed every couple of months they will mould and rot, and you will freak out.

I got a good chuckle out of reading some of the negative reviews on this unit. I own an industrial water treatment contracting company and it always strikes me as funny how uneducated people are with water, something they use every day. I figured I would take a minute and clarify a couple of things for people that use or are planning on purchasing one of these humidifiers, (Oh and yes I actually own one)

Humidifiers have been a part of our family for around fifteen years after I read a study on how they can reduce the usual winter ailments, colds and flu's.

First how these units work.

If you take the humidifying unit apart, you will find two probes. I believe they make them out of Carbon and other materials. They are round and about ½" thick, and approximately four inches long. These probes are then connected the electrical cord. When you plug it in and the probes are immersed in water, they create an electrical current between the two probes. This creates water that boils, and thus creates steam.

Some key facts about water. Pure water will not conduct an electrical current. This is why the instructions recommend adding a pinch of salt if your unit does not produce steam. The salt when disolved increases the TDS, (more on that in a minute) thus creating a conductive in the water.

Water is considered the Universal Solvent. In other word's water pretty much will absorb and dissolve anything that we submerge or add to it. Sometimes instantly. Sometimes over time. Two key things are in water that effect these humidifiers. One is the hardness of the water. Hardness is measured by checking how much Calcium and Magnesium is in the water. The other effect is Totally Dissolved Solids, or TDS. (all the other minerals that actually dissolve into water)

When you boil water, (essentially what these units do), the vapor that they produce is considered pure water or close too pure. So in essence as the water vapor escapes the unit what is left behind are the residual minerals, (tds) and the hardness, (magnesium and Calcium). Generally the Hardness cakes on the probes and creates a cement like residual. TDS usually fall out of suspension as clumps. Gray/black sand/rock formations.

So when you read comments in these reviews about residual inside the tank, or that the unit stopped producing steam, what these people are referring to is the residual left over after the water is boiled off. Depending on the water quality of their tap, the residual can be a lot or very little.

Ok, before you purchase one of these units, just remember. It's $15.00. (Wal Mart has them for a few bucks less) Your not buying an ultra fancy $200.00 BrookStone humidifier/vaporizier. These are generally one season, low maintenance, throw them away when you're done. (depending how many days out of the year you fire them up) So keep that in mind.

If you want to make one last, you can get some plain white vinegar. Find a jar or container that the Humidifying unit will fit into. That means something that the bottom portion that sets in the water not the top part where the cord goes in. (Edited this to better explain it) and fill it with 3/4 vinegar and the rest water, creating a mild acid solution. Set the probe portion in it and let it soak for a day. Repeat as necessary until the unit operates to your liking. Note the probes inside the unit do wear out, and hard water deposits do cake up pretty thick on the probes which increase that Wear and Tear effect. (I've taken enough of them apart to know)

Bottom line If you want a cheap way of creating warm humidified air these are the unit for you. Don't expect anything more then what they price them at, and if you don't plan on maintaining them, ie using vinegar to keep the probes semi-clean of hardness deposits, then expect no more then one to two years of use.

Very simple and easy to use. About the black particles that develop in the water after use, I found the following explanation to be helpful:

"A Vaporizer produces moisture by heating small amounts of the minerals in the water using tiny electrodes in the shaft of the unit. The minerals then heat the water to a boil and release steam into the air. The minerals will then settle to the bottom of the tank, possibly becoming small black flakes. These flakes are normal and should be rinsed out when you refill the tank. Any bacteria or mold in the water will be killed by the temperature of the water."

This is the best value for money can buy. It just requires a bit of patience when cleaning it. The more often you clean it, the faster the deposits dissolve.

Cleaning TIP: I took a bottle of water ( evian, aberfoyle ) and cut off the top part of the bottle leaving just enough so that the heating part can be fully immerged sort of making a container to hold the vinegar and salt. Pour the vinegar and a little bit of salt just enough so that the entire heating element is soaked. Leave it there for a few minutes and voila.

The steam is hot when in use, so be careful if you have kids around that would be the only drawback, but then again, that's why it is called a vapourizer vapours is supposd to be hot.

Honest reviews on Vicks 1.5 Gallon Vaporizer with Night-Light

After my daughter was born, we purchased this for her room. I'm surprised to read all the complaints about this humidifier, because it's a cheap, low maintanance item! I must admit, that after 5 years of use (used anytime the furnace is on) and with little or no cleaning, it's doing just fine! We have hard water and we do have a softener, so no salt is needed. As soon as we fill it up and plug it in, the thing starts boiling away, QUIETLY. The directions say it lasts 18-24 hours, but in reality, it doesn't with our water. The more minerals and salt in the water, the faster it boils out of the tank. No smells, no white residue, just easy to use and no parts to replace. In the morning, we take it to the sink, dump out the black specks of minerals (THIS IS NORMAL) and refill it for the next night.

I like the idea of the boiling water killing germs. We don't have any slime or gunk filling up the tank like our other evaporative humidifier. I love the cup on the top for medicine placement. I buy a huge bottle of essential oil of eucalyptus, and pour some in the cup when someone in the family is sick. Works like a charm!

When it's time to replace this one, I would not hesitate to buy another. It's a very basic humidifier that raises the humidity quickly. I would buy the largest model of this type. Considering the horrible reviews on the other models, it doesn't seem to be worth buying anything else. Even if something goes wrong with it, it really isn't that much of a problem considering the cost of the unit.

UPDATE: Shortly after I wrote the review, my unit stoppped working. It had a great run! Of course we replaced it with the same unit. It is currently sitting on my kitchen counter and we keep it running all night, every night and all day on the weekends. My favorite design was the old one. The new larger models have large, flat bases which are harder to drain, clean and fill. Even though it says it has larger capacity, the steamer does not use all the water up. It stops steaming after using one gallon of water, leaving extra in the base which is fine with me. Each day I pour in another gallon, and plug it in.

This vaporizer is inexpensive and it works. It humidifies well, it's simple (no filters or expensive additives) and easy to maintain. Simply put ... it puts water in the dry air for a low cost. I don't see why the other reviewers have had problems with it.

15-20 Cigar Humidor Cherrywood Finish Reviews

I was skeptical about buying this at first, but decided to go for it. The price was perfect and so was the size.

Size:

You can fit around 20 of my size cigars. I choose to go for the longer fattier ones. If the cigars were smaller you could easily fit more.

Seal:

The seal on this is superb. In my opinion it is almost airtight.

Finish:

The finish was flawless and matched my desk, dresser, and night stand. I was just hoping it would be similar but it worked in my favour. The hinges are not what they appear to be in the picture, they are brass but just a regular old hinge.

Accessories:

Next, it came with a hygrometer and a humidifier. Both work and did the job well. But as a more than average smoker I had to get a Digital hygrometer and better humidifier for it. Which I also bought from this seller.

Notes to Remember:

One thing is you Need to buy is a "One Step Calibration Kit" and "Two Seasoning packs". I also bought these from this seller. These will compliment the humidor and will make sure it properly seasoned, and the hygrometer is calibrated so the cigars do not dry out.

Everything I bought was from "".

This was a cheap humidor, and I was not expecting perfection whatsoever when I purchased it. I was, however, expecting a decent seal and actual Spanish cedar lining.

The seal was akin to an open submarine hatch at 20,000 leagues.

The Spanish cedar siding visible in the product photos was actually the most microscopically thin cedar veneer I've ever seen, glued onto MDF backing. The sides of the lid are bare finish, meaning lacquer is directly exposed to the humidity and your cigars.

I wouldn't sell this humidor to Saddam Hussein.

I've recently gotten into this hobby and have a larger humidor i keep in the closet of my study, it was inconvenient to go to this every time i wanted to share a fine cigar with someone, so i saw this unassuming but classy looking humidor and decided it would be great to put a few choice smokables in it on my desk, for easy access.

I am impressed by the value of this humidor,

Yes the actual box is made of mdf with either vinyl or veneer outside to make it look great, but it looks in no way cheap from the outside, and it is a very solid box.

seal is very good, there is a cedar lining that is about 1/8th inch thick that covers the entire interior of the box, The panels on mine were slightly warped when i first got them and i had concerns about it's air tightness, but while seasoning the box the panels swelled brilliantly to create a great seal and no longer look warped,

This is a lovely humidor to display on your desk or a shelf, A a fantastic little box to offer your associates a treat from,or for the very occasional smoker, who might just want something to hold 15-20 sticks to season between visits to the cigar shop and his or her enjoyment.

would gladly purchase again

This humidor is atrocious! The seal on it is almost as good as if you simply removed the lid and replaced it with a screen door, not to mention that the seal wasn't even affixed properly inside the box. The only almost-redeeming quality to this piece of junk is that (until you touch it) it does look nice. However, it would be better served being used as a jewelry box rather than a humidor. Do yourself a favor and look at something else if you need a small humidor!

Three weeks and an inspection revealed mold starting to grow. Pulled it out, put in a HumiPillow to help for the next couple days, and sunk some money on some proper Heartfelt beads.

Honest reviews on Ice Crystal Clear Cigar Humidifier Gel

Hi All,

I use these along with my cigar oasis. The cigar oasis is generally enough, but I find that the sensor sometimes doesnt kick in when the humidity is below 70%...its very finnicky. Using the GEL I know that the humdior will always maintain 68-70% humidity...with or without the oasis.

I use this as a secondary/backup product in a 125 cigar humidor...it works perfectly.

My HVAC guy recommended these tablets to keep algae from forming in my system. I've used them for three years and guess what? No algae. The HVAC guy says that algae is one of the main causes for a system to flood and/or smell. By popping in a few of these inexpensive tabs, I'm buying some insurance against a mess. Not sure what to say, saw these blue pills when they arrived and thought eh another gimmick, SUCKER! Well they are not the happy blue pill but they sure will make anyone happy when they hear that there pump makes less noise. I cleaned up my new pump (8months old) from all sludge like material and popped one of these pills in. After about a day you can tell the difference in the noise reduction since the pump is not fighting the sludge. Will keep buying and it beats tilex in the pump.

This wick fits into our humidifier and was a perfect drop in fit. That's the only good news.

The bad news is the design of this kind of wick. We have a lot of humidifiers in our house. It's a big house with lots of doors and hallways so we can't just use a huge one. We rely on a few "whole house" humidifiers, there are AprilAire humidifiers on the furnaces, and we have a few "medium" sized humidifiers in some bedrooms. All are set to keep moderate humidity, making sure the humidity is evenly dispersed so no one area gets too humid nor too dry. We have a lot of humidifiers and we have gone through many brands, many styles, and many sizes.

We have learned one very consistent fact: the humidifiers that use the flat, rectangular wicks are substantially less efficient than the humidifiers that use the cylindrical, round wicks. The stupid thing is that both the wicks and the humidifiers are approximately the same price within a given coverage range. The round wick machines don't cost any more but they work much better.

The humidifiers we use with this wick have to run constantly and can barely maintain 35% -even when set on roar (you know, so loud it sounds like a jet taking off). The round wick humidifiers can be kept on low (practically silent), push 45% if needed, and only have to run about half the time.

This is not a pointless rant about this one particular wick. It is just merely a reminder that if you are looking here then you have one of the flat wick humidifiers. Do yourself a big favor and rather than plonk down another $20 on this wick, instead consider buying a round wick humidifier and a round $20 wick. Either way the wick maker is happy because they probably don't care which wick you buy. Next time we need another wick we are just going to replace the whole machine.

FYI, we keep ours set at 30% in cooold weather, 35% in cold weather, and 40% in moderate weather, as recommended by the people who make such recommendations (the Department of They).
