I've tried a lot of types of humidifiers for my 30 ct, $40 wooden cigar box. This open stone, low cost, device seems to hold my % humidity between 65-70 percent more reliably than other more expensive items I've tried.

Here's Why:

My low cost humidor was Very difficult to season. And being able to oversaturate this stone helped maintain the humidity level. The bags and pillows just wouldn't keep up.

If I only use distilled water this remains usable for months, and months.

I found that even after seasoning the box, the pouches and pillows couldn't keep up with how often I open the lid (up to twice a day). I did have success with pillows and pouches when I left the lid down for at least a week at a time.

I like these because I can vary the water amount to compensate for differences in humidity levels easily and quickly. You can't throw it in an forget it, but it doesn't cost a fortune either.

I bought a few of these for 2 humidors I keep only partially stocked. My joe-brand ones had quit helping out long ago and you can really tell the difference when your humidifiers are putting out the right amount of water. The junky ones these replaced wouldn't hold 1/2 the water, so now I'm doing a lot less maintenance and the humidity is right where it should be.

These work well and are priced right. Be careful not to overfill and if you are using vertically on the side of your humidor, make sure to hold vertically over a sink after filling to make sure that excess liquid has soaked in and does not run out. You don't want to warp your humidor.

So, it's July 1st and air conditioning goes out for part of my office. The part which happens to contain the servers & telecom gear. Building maintenance looked at the unit, contractor looked at the unit -it needs to be replaced...but given the July 4th holiday, it's not going to happen for at least a week.

Hence, my purchase of these blowers. I'm using these blowers to move air from areas which have working air conditioning to areas where the dead air conditioner is located. So far, so good. Was 86F in the warmest office, now 78F and comfortable. I'd imagine after a few more hours it'll be even closer to normal.

Noise levels: High is louder than acceptable for any great length of time in an office. That said, it's only wind/air movement noise with no motor whine whatsoever. Not an objectionable noise, but it's definitely there. Medium is far quieter and still moves a good amount of air. This is the speed we're leaving them on. Even our most ADHD employee hasn't yipped about the noise on medium.

Air movement: Excellent on all levels. It truly pushes air a long distance compared to traditional axial fans, like box & table fans. Even 20+ feet away I can still feel it strongly.

Durability: Time will tell. I'll certainly post updates if/when they happen. The housing is made of a nice thick-ish polycarbonate in high-vis yellow, so no extra caution signs are needed. It's someone's own fault if they happen to trip over it.

Size: It's difficult to tell from the photo, but these are substantially smaller than the commercial units, about half the size. Those put out anywhere from 2000-4000 CFM of air vs. this one's 500 CFM, but bigger isn't always better. Bigger = noisier and in an office, the higher CFM would cause papers to fly everywhere. This little guy can be stored just about anywhere and doesn't weigh a ton. It does put out far more than the Lasko models I've seen in the various stores.

In previous times, I used to keep a few old central AC blowers around for work like this and just soldered/welded some chicken wire over the various openings to keep fingers out of danger. This looks far better and is overall quieter. Certainly safer!

Update: 1 month later

Still 5 stars. After 2.5 weeks, the AC was finally replaced at my office. Wrapped the cord up on this little guy.... then the rains came and started seeping in through the floor joists. Back in service this little guy went again, this time drying carpets. Great little blower. I'm very glad we've got a couple in our maintenance inventory now.

Made of that impossible to crack molded polyethylene like the big commercial units. Not high impact plastic. Starts out as a baby with a small whine or faint scrape. (I have two of these). They get quiet when the burrs wear off the squirrel cage inside. Move a LOT of air, mine are 3 years old; so MANY uses.

They'd be worth at least $100-120 to me if I knew how awesome they are.

i only write this review because i had questions that were not answered by listening to other reviews.

1. how powerful is it? (i dont know what CFM is since I am using this for home use)

when the fan is on full speed, the blower makes you feel like you have your head stuck out the window on the freeway and are going 80mph. (this is how my face felt when i put it in front of the blower)

2. is it loud?

it honestly is no louder than a ceiling fan (maybe a little louder, but not much) way more quite than a box fan

i got the product because i live in an apartment and there is no airflow, this product works great for moving the air through the big rooms. (point the fan up toward the ceiling and it feels like you have a ceiling fan)

despite the pictures the fan is not a high gloss plastic but rather a matte finish.

I bought this to help me dry the carpets in my truck while I spent weeks hunting down a pesky leak. It was great, it's small and light weight but this thing moves air. It's also really quiet for what it does and come with a plug on the unit for a small light or other light load. Multiple speed settings and I do agree that the dial feels a bit flimsy, but I've had zero trouble with it after almost two months of use where I'd drag it out to drive way for a couple of days a week. I'd buy this again in a heartbeat!

Contractor warned me that he was having issues with the Honeywell steam humidifier. Claimed I would be lucky if it lasted 3 years. Thinking I could live with 3 years, I had him install it. I really wanted a steam humidifier. Well, it last a little longer than 3 weeks. Contractor brought me a new one, and same thing. I am now in process of installing an Aprilaire which cost a few hundred more. Honeywell, you should pull this product from the market.

I had no option but to buy this product. My new furnace was in such a tight space that they could not install a conventional humidifier unless it voided it's warranty.

SOooo it's Truesteam or nothing. Let me say that it humidifies better than any other humidifier but it is NOT a set it and forget it product. First, it has to be installed correctly (esp.the wiring). If you have the chops do it fine , but otherwise get an HVAC dealer to do it for you. Second, get a Honeywell Reverse Osmosis Filter System (about $200 & easy to install)to go with it. This will save you time and $$ down the line. I went 2yrs without one and the scaling and cleaning and replacement of the water sensor unit ($60) each year was a pain...and my softened water is not that bad. Third, an probably most important, get to know your troubleshooting manual (Honeywell has a video that's pretty good as well [Google: Truesteam Tuneup]). If you don't you will have endless service calls because the warning lights go on and the unit stops working 2-4 times a season and you have to diagnose the problem. The blinking warning light system will tell you 95% of the time what the issue is by the # of blinks. Since I'm now an expert it's easy to get it going again.

Bottom line..I love the way it humidifies. Very even and efficient since my fan is on all the time. Better than Aprilaires I've owned. BUT.. you have to get to know the unit. If you don't you WILL get frustrated. I don't look forward to selling my house and explaining this to the new buyer.

UPDATE: I inquired about the APRILAIRE 800 Steam Humidifier (Hey..if it works better I'll try it) and was told by their #1 dealer in the area that the Aprilaire rep has told them to stay away from the unit...too many unresolved problems. Translation: endless service calls. Like with Truesteam the fixes are probably not difficult but the average homeowner doesn't want all the maintenance issues.

I had this for 3rd season. I installed it on my new house. The contractor just don't read manual and installed it wrong. They didn't follow the spacing required 3" around and 24" downstream. So I had them fix it. They change the location, but again, still not as required. They didn't had the 24" downsteam. It's more like 8" I have a horizontal duct and it needs to be about 24" clear. So for 2 years the humidifier was working hard to get the humidity level i set. Last night, I relocated the unit myself to the required spacing. Now, it works great. It gets to the humidity level i set a lot faster. So far, the plastic canister is holding up the heat. I don't see why it's a problem to some. A lot of coffee maker are made of plastic. Anyways, i'm happy with it now that I properly installed it. Now it works great.

I bought this unit on the advice of my HVAC man in 2008. To be fair, and this is the only good thing I will say about this unit, it does a good job of humidifying the house WHEN IT WORKS! The damn thing is made of plastic and is CONSTANTLY splitting (water tank) and or cracking (senders) after every heating season. Something is always broken on this piece of s _ _ t. I have had 2 brand new units replace successive faulty units but they all end up falling apart again. What the hell was Honeywell thinking of when they made this thing out of plastic?

It is November and time to start humidifying in the house and the unit water sender is once again cracked and broken. So I have a truesteam unit mounted on the ducting doing nothing. My HVAC man is bringing another water sender which will likely be junk at the end of the season.

My advice to anyone thinking about buying the Honeywell Truesteam STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM IT! Save your money and look for something that is NOT made of plastic. I don't know about the Aprilaire units, but I think it's time to look at them. Honeywell should be ashamed of building this kind of garbage. I hope this review prevents at least one person from wasting their money on this product.

Read the other reviews for this humidifier and you'll understand why it's a bad product. I'm on year 4 with mine. Its horrible to clean. The tank and seal already had to be replaced. Now, I get a water sensor error code that will require a call to the dealer. The parts warranty is 5 years which is good. The bad thing is it doesn't cover labor. I bought this to save water over the traditional water wasting type. What a horrible choice I made!

Honeywell® Replacement Activated Carbon Pre-Filter Review

At the time of ordering, the picture showed a Honeywell filter. Manufacturer was listed as Honeywell. Description indicated Honeywell. Title said Honeywell. The item that was actually shipped was a generic store brand not Honeywell. Highly misleading! This is straight from the product page: "Product Specifications Brand Name: Honeywell"

That does not appear to indicate "US PreFilter® Brand."

The filter LOOKS OK, but looks can be deceiving. When I pulled off the velcro tabs, to cut it down to size, some of the filter mesh came off with the tab. I cut that part of the filter off. I have bad allergies, and I so I need a good filter. I am willing to pay the Honeywell premium to get the known, good Honeywell quality. Perhaps this is as good, but I can't really tell. Regardless, all things on the page indicated that this was a HONEYWELL filter, not a generic house brand! If I had wanted a generic house brand, I could have ordered a cheaper one. There are plenty to choose from.

This isn't a case of not reading the product description, or being careless. I am fully aware of the generic house brands, and was very careful to read all of the page, multiple times, before ordering. This is deceptive advertising, in my opinion.

I am going to attempt to upload a scan of the very small slip of paper that accompanied the filter. The filter was not in a box (despite their picture), it was simply wrapped in thin plastic. Not shrink-wrap, just thin plastic.

Initially I received the part for my Enviracaire filter (1050x), which is #1050x series. However it did not fit the circumference of the HEPA filter. Kitty Hawk enterprise (the seller) was kind enough to send me a replacement, that did fit. The box that contained the filter that fit, was smaller(although it has the same part #). I suspect a packaging error of some kind. I rated the seller (fair), because of the problems that I had of not being able to use the air purifier, however in retrospect I think that there was no error on the sellers part, since I know of no way to change my rating, I like to change his service as excellent.

This filter is NOT for the Essick Air MA-0800 humidifier. It is for the Emerson MA-0800/0 humidifier. Very confusing but not the fault of Amazon or the marketplace seller. The correct filter for the Essick MA-0800 is the MAF2 filter which is about 1-1/2" longer than this one and more money. I leave 3 stars because the filter IS as described and was shipped very quickly. My fault for not understanding the description. BTW, I stretched this filter a little bit and while not perfect, did get it installed. Not correctly, but it would have cost as much to return it as it cost so I went ahead and used it.

One of my vaporizers is the evaporative style that is a fan blows air through a sponge like material to put water in the air. I have been very happy with it until it started to smell, and the evaporator "sponge" turned black.

I found this Kaz Bacteriological And ordered it. My problem is solved. A few drops of this fluid put in the water and eliminates the bacteria that cause the problem.

I bought this gift for my brother since in the winter its really dry and this is a good way to humidify the house with a cool look to it. I would recommend using distilled water with it so no calcium deposits build up. I think this is a great product for kids who like fountains or even adults who need a more appealing humidifier

I had seen one of these mist lamps at a friends place and had wanted to get one for a long time. I ordered this one before the holiday season so I would be able to use it as a decoration as well as to boost up the humidity while the heater is running.

I love the look of it. It looks awesome. My only complaint is that the base of the stand should have been a little wider to make it a bit more stable. It is too easy to tip over. Especially if you have a pet that might brush against it like we do.

I replaced my Graco programmable humidifier with this model based on some word of mouth reviews. I will say this, the machine looks pretty sleek, a lot better than the big white Graco. Unfortunately, looks is all that this thing has going for it.

The humidity control is a wheel that only lets you set in 10 degree increments, and then only from 30% to 60%. There is no display showing what the current humidity is, so you don't really know how well it is working. The permanent filter is the same as the disposable filter used by every other humidifier, only it is in a plastic case and can be washed. The tank opening is small, which makes filling from a gallon jug of distilled water (best way to preserve the filter) a bit challenging.

But all of that can be tolerated, except for the fact that the machine simply didn't produce enough humidity. I let it run nearly continuously for a week and it never hit the 40% level that I had set to trigger a shut off. It didn't use nearly as much water as I would have thought given how long it was in operation. Finally, after a week, I used a hygrometer to test the actual humidity in the room...26%. 26% after a week of running? Nothing appears to be mechanically wrong with the machine. The fan works, the filter in the proper place, etc. It just simply doesn't have the output I would expect from a machine at this price.

It looks cool, but I will go back to the ugly Graco and a comfortable bedroom at between 40% and 50% humidity.

I have had this device for over a year and it has worked well. Cleaning the filter is not as easy as they say. I don't see the device working much longer mainly because of filter buildup. Lime away does not even get this thing clean.

I bought two of these from Costco and have been extremely happy with them. I get shocked badly all winter, but these little jewels eliminated that problem. Also, the relatively smaller water tank makes them very user friendly for older, less agile people. I bought a larger one for a small lady friend of mine and she was having a terrible time carrying the larger water tank to the unit. I gave her one of these and it fit the bill perfectly. This is simple to use and reduces the electric bill because when air is more moist it feels warmer than it actually is. I have one in my bedroom that I run all night so that I don't have those problematic dry sinus problems that accompany winter heat in the house. I also have one in the kitchen (the other end of the house from the bedroom), so that eliminates the shock factor in that end of the house. Great little product at an affordable price.

After trying several different methods to keep my humidors at a constant humidity level, and spoiling two pre "96 Cohibas in the process, with the Boveda packets, I've found the answer. Very predictable depletion rate, and they keep the humidity at the level the packet states. For a period of time, I was using the Boveda packets in my humidors in Afghanistan ( with the humidity frequently at 5% or less, and they performed perfectly.

but not cool air. Doesn't really make much difference the temperature of the water or how much ice (yes, ice) you add, it doesn't do much to cool the air temperature. Dropped the temperature a whopping 1.3 degrees F in my first test (from 85.3 degrees to 84 degrees), and 0.9 degrees F in my second test. Don't bother.

Don't waste your money.

Very poor quality. Doesn't help to cool very much.

Difficult to refill.

I tried using it for my bedroom which is pretty average sized, and my fan worked much better than this. Do not expect the cooler can cool your room in the summer.

I've used swamp coolers for years but can't have on in this 10th floor apartment with no porch. I use this cooler to both cool and humidify my bedroom. It does a good job, and unlike the other reviewer I find it easy to fill; I keep a gallon jug in the bedroom and fill it from the tub. It takes around 2 1/2 gallons, which lasts me around 18 hours. It's quiet at low and medium settings; the high fan speed is louder, of course. It costs almost nothing to operate, too.

It only cools if the humidity is below 40%. The humidity here ranges from 5% in mid-summer and mid-winter to maybe 25% when it's overcast (when it rains it's cool and more humid anyways). Check your average humidity; if it's above 30% or 40% this may not help you.

Second, if you put it inside a room, even with the door open, it will happily humidify and cool away UNTIL the humidity in the room reaches around 40%. Then it just gets humid.

Here's how I use it:

In the winter I put it in the doorway of my bedroom and run the ceiling fan on low in that room and the adjacent room. I then open a window in the adjacent room (yes, I like things very cool). The cooler pulls the dry air into the bedroom, cools and humidifies it, and the ceiling fan distributes it.

In summertime I put the unit inside the bedroom. I blow air-conditioned (read: dry) air from the adjacent room to the bedroom at night. This circulates the dry air over to the cooler, which humidifies it and cools it a few more degrees.

As you can see, this ISN'T an air conditioner, which would cost three to four times as much and suck up lots more electricity. If it was ducted to a window it would force air through the room and cool like a swamp cooler. Unfortunately, I haven't found anything that does this. Until I do I'll keep this unit as long as it runs.

To be fair, the product does not claim to be an air conditioner. However, it does claim to cool 12 degrees cooler, which I didn't find at all. I live in a dry Colorado climate, and still it is barely cooler than a fan. You have to fill it with tons of ice to even get that, and it requires refilling with water and ice often. If you don't clean it at least once a week, it starts smelling really bad.

All this effort of refilling and cleaning is not worth the 3 to 5 degrees cooler you get. For that, I'd rather just plug in a fan and not have to worry about it every day. Save your money and buy a portable air conditioner. It's worth the extra investment, trust me.

Don't buy this thing unless you don't mind having to continuously put ice in it. Also, if you don't live in a desert it won't cool at all. Any moisture at all, forget about it. Just get an AC. I gave mine away, was just eating my space up. Total loss.
