9 Gallon Humidifier Review

9 Gallon Humidifier

I have had several Holmes humidifiers and Lasko humidifiers since getting rid of the last of the old permanent console Sears belt humidifiers that clogged and put mineral dust into the air.

The Laskos just run and run season after season (clean them out with muriatic acid or toilet bowl cleaner at the end of each season) and replace the paper cascade with a metal Honeywell cascade once and forget it. Do not attempt to clean the aluminum cascade filter in muriatic acid (toilet bowl cleaner).

I used to be able to get both Lasco and Holmes at Wal-Mart, but they seem to only carry the Holmes now. That does increase filter/wick sales since you are supposed to (and HAVE TO because they no longer wick water properly with mineral build up) replace that every month on the Holmes units.

On the other hand I pitched one Holmes whose wick clogged in 1 month and am keeping another in the bedroom as a back-up to the primary living room Lasko when it cannot maintain proper humidity during the coldest weather. The wicks constantly clog with minerals and quit working and the water valves on the containers never seem to open properly. (I have now re-engineered the valve openers so they always work, but why should the customer have to do this?)

Winter 2009/10 ADDENDUM: The motor finally died in my last Lasko unit. I removed the dead motor/pump and installed an aquarium pump for the waterfall and a small fan from Rite-Aid Pharmacy, that fits perfectly into the cone and it is running like a champ.

Our humidity is running around 45% at 10 to 20 degrees and we can breathe again without waking up with a sore throat, dry eyes and dried out nose in the AM!!

I am still pleased with my purchase of this item. We are in Anchorage where it is very dry in the winters and this is perfect. Our house is about 1600 sq ft and we keep it in the foyer where there is a ceiling fan on our vaulted ceiling. It does a good job on low to get humidity throughout the house. We havent turned it off since we got it about a month ago. It works for us just fine! Some would find it noisy, but for something that brings humidity to virtually the entire home, it isnt too bad.

Best Deals for 9 Gallon Humidifier

I've used many different humidifiers...I live in the desert and it's a MUST in the winter. This is by far the best design because it pumps the water over the evaporative pad rather than having the pad absorb it up into a wick. We have fairly hard water, and the pads stop absorbing rather quickly and have to be replaced. This design just keeps going and going. I just clean it every few weeks, and put it back in service. The air in the house is always a comfortable, stable humidity, even during the coldest, driest winter.

Honest reviews on 9 Gallon Humidifier

The only possible complaint I would have is the noise, it's quite a loud unit. So much so I keep mine in my living room and have a smaller Holmes for my bedroom. The Lasko keeps the majority of the house at a very comfortable humidity. I replace the wick every 5 6 weeks, and clean the unit when I store it for the summer so it's very low maintenance. I do add a very small amount of BestAir 3BT-6 Original BT Humidifier Bacteriostatic Water Treatment 32 oz. at each refill that seems to help the wick last longer, though to much makes the water foam up and probably would harm the pump.

the control to set desired humidity did not work and i had to return this product and go even longer without humidity in my desert environment. i have had these humidifiers before and they are reasonably satisfactory even though i had to replace them often. I did not want to get another one of and bought a honeywell quiet care instead. glad i made the change!!

I bought this unit in mid-november for my 2 bedroom apartment. Overall it does a good job of maintaining a comfortable level of humidity typically around 45-50%. However the unit is constantly ON. It never cycles and this is with the humidistat set at just off of it's lowest setting and the fan speed on the mid setting which will give you tolerable noise level. What has caused me concern is how quickly the filter has gotten mouldy and that the air out of the unit smells like musty. I have changed the the Protec cartridge as recommended every 30 days and cleaned the filter several times per the instructions in the manual. I phoned the manufacturer (Kaz not Honeywell) and they say the filter will only last 1 to 3 months and that it needs to be cleaned every week. I pointed out that no where in the manual does it state that frequent a cleaning period nor such a short filter life and that in-fact it states that the filter should last one season. She said sorry and that there is nothing they can or will do other that tell you where you can get a new filter for $11.

This humidifier performs as advertised; it's very quiet and is adequate for several rooms to a moderately sized house. The dual water tanks are easy to carry and fill, and the design looks better (at least to me) than a big, square box with fake wood grain. The base and tanks are very easy to clean compared to other units.

There are a couple of flaws. The water tanks look good, but would be easier to fill if they could stand for filling. The curved shape of the top means that they need to be propped up in some way. The screw tops that seal the tanks need to be tightened securely. Someone with weak hands may need help or a tool or risk leakage.

All in all, this is a good humidifier.

Best Deals for Honeywell HCM-6011i QuietCare 11-Gallon Console Humidifier with Air

The only problem is a tendancy of the filter to become moldy, but this is easily remedied by adding 1/16 Cup or so of ammonia to each of 2 reservoirs that you fill with water. This will ward off the mold. Buy extra filters. This machine is very quiet relative to the amount of humidity that it puts out (hence the filter enclosure is correspondingly more humid, and tends toward mold more easily).

Honest reviews on Honeywell HCM-6011i QuietCare 11-Gallon Console Humidifier with Air

Classic example of function following form. The designers were compelled to make this humidifier rotund and swoopy, but in the process made the water chambers impossible to set flat in a sink for filling. There is no way to balance one of these, aside from holding it upright with one hand while running your faucet with the other. Then it's a delicate balancing act to turn off the faucet while holding multi-gallons of water. Unless you have three hands, it takes practice to do it without spilling, and this design defect could have been avoided. Do yourself a favor and buy extra filters and a humidifier water treatment solution at the same time as you buy this humidifier. Don't be deceived by the Honeywell brand name. It's made by Kaz, like many other brands of humidifiers. BTW: it IS noisier than some humidifiers, but not excessively so given the area this machine can humidify.

I have heard some good reviews and some bad reviews about this humidifier.. most of them have been the surface below the humidifier being wet.. But if you read the directions this will not happen. This humidifer is great if your humidity level is below 45%. If it is above then the mist falls to the surface below.

I have this at my cube at work, and i have a TON of co-workers who are now going to buy this just becuase it is so compact, and it works great for small offices or cubes. This runs off of Distilled or Purified water and shoots up a small stream of Mist all day long. I have mine on High for 8 hours a day, and only fill it up 2 times per day. My Co-workers say that going in and out of my cube is like night and day with the great feeling of the moisture that this pushes out in the area in my cube.

This is worth the buy!

If you're thinking about buying this co-sleeper, I'm writing this for you.

*Background:

We wanted to have our baby in our room the first months knowing that most babies wake up every 2-3 hours and that getting up and walking to another room would be a killer (waking up is exhausting enough). I'm also breastfeeding so I didn't need to get anything ready/warm out of the bed. But if you're formula-feeding and you have bottle(s) and warmer on your night stand, you'll also find this useful.

*PROS:

Convenient size. My 6-month-old still fits very comfortably lengthwise but she can touch both sides with her arms extended without being constrained.

Baby in the same room. The first days while you recover it's the perfect companion since it doesn't required you to get out. Even if your partner helps you at night, during the day if you're home alone and resting (as you should) it's great. Later is the salvation of the exhausted sleepless parents. You don't have to go out to another room.

Easy to move. The co-sleeper is intended to be used exclusively attached to the bed and there are several warnings printed in the bassinet. But we took the decision of using it unattached the first months since I needed to get in and out of the bed comfortably and not getting almost to the front of the bed. The wheels makes moving it very easy. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THIS COULD BE UNSAFE FOR OLDER BABIES ONCE THEY CAN ROLL SINCE THE BARRIER THAT GOES AGAINST YOUR BED IS ABOUT 5 INCHES HIGH AND IF THERE'S NO BED AGAINST IT, BABY COULD FALL. WE TOOK THIS DECISION AND WE CAREFULLY SUPERVISE THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR BABY.

*INDIFFERENT

There are big warning labels printed in the front and one of the headers that are deliberately not shown in the Amazon picture, this could be a aesthetic issue for some people.

Most american beds are high so you'll probably need the leg extensions. You can used them without losing the wheels since they fit the extensions. We only used 2 of the pieces, since it's what we needed and because more than that would've been unstable. I suggest that you fully assemble the co-sleeper before the baby arrives in order to check if you'll be needing the leg extensions.

Assembly is not difficult. It can't be assembled as a pack and play since this is a more complex bassinet. One of the sides goes down to go against the bed but can also go up to be an independent crib. A pack-and-play can't do that, so the assembly can't be as easy. I put it together while my husband was at work and I was 8-months-pregnant, it wasn't difficult. I don't consider this point to be a negative thing.

* CONS:

The mattress is thin and hard. We know that the recommendation is for babies to sleep in firm mattresses but this is way too hard. It has about 1 inch or less of padding in a hard base. I would recommend getting another mattress. We didn't do it since our little one seem to be sleeping comfortable and I added a bit of padding inside the fitted sheet.

OVERALL:

We would definitely buy this again. It's been a "life-saver" and a help in our sleepless nights. It's worth the money and the best is that you can easily sell it after you're done with it.

Was my review helpful in taking a decision (to buy or not to buy)?

This is one of the best things I've order for my baby!!! My baby's room was on the other end of my house and we was getting up every two hours (or less sometimes) and it was really hard for me to keep getting up and walking all the way across the house to get him. We even tried putting him down in his Pack-n-Play and that was still really hard. It's SO great that he is right there next to me. I can just roll over and pick him up, change him right there in the bed, feed him and lay him back down without having to get out of bed in the middle of the night. I am glad I got the "mini" version of it because it takes up less space in my room, but now that he is older (8 months) he doesn't really like sleeping in it because he likes to move around a lot. We are now in a new house and his room is right across the hall from mine and he is doing really well about sleeping in his crib now. I still have it in my room for those nights that he is really fussy. He also plays in as a Pack-N-Play when I'm doing stuff in my room or if we go to our friend's house. I really wish I had this from day one instead of waiting until he was over 3 months old!!

I LOVE this co-sleeper! It fit PEREFECLY in the tiny apartment we lived in when our daughter was first born. It was easy to set up, easy to clean, and very sturdy. Our daughter is now 11 months and she still sleeps in it, in the pack and play position. I love that it's mesh on the sides, so there are no slats for her little arms or legs to get stuck in or for her pacifier to fall out on the floor in the middle of the night.

Honest reviews on Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper Mini Bassinet

The 'mattress' looks like a piece of cardboard bent in two places and covered in vinyl. Supposedly it's very thin foam but it looks like cardboard (sitting atop fabric and not a real support system no less). At the very least, they could have shipped this without bending it in two places so baby isn't sleeping on BENT cardboard. As my husband put it, it's like placing your child on the cheapest '70s pull out bed. Babies don't need much but this is ridiculous. Calling it a mattress is downright deceptive.

To rectify this, it seems we'll have to shell out more than the cost of the sleeper on the matching real mattress. Which now makes this as expensive as larger cribs. Haven't been able to find a playard or bassinet mattress that will fit the 18" x 30" space (smaller than this and you're creating an unsafe space for baby to slide into). If anyone knows of a mattress brand and model that fits this space, I would really appreciate you sending it my way!

Here's the brief:

Cons:

No mattress (at least not what can be considered a mattress)

At the very least mattress could have shipped flat rather than with two large creases

Real mattress offered by company is tiny yet is more than the cost of the sleeper (clever of them, no?)

Pros:

Fits in just about any space

Once you get through the not so descriptive instructions, pretty easy to assemble and fold down

Attaches to bed easily

Storage space below and pockets at sides

The co-sleeper is perfectly fine, but the product description is wrong. The Mini Co-Sleeper DOES NOT come with a 100% cotton sheet. The sheet is 65% polyester and 35% cotton. Our babies have been pretty miserable and sweaty on it, and it is difficult to find a replacement sheet.

One of my vaporizers is the evaporative style that is a fan blows air through a sponge like material to put water in the air. I have been very happy with it until it started to smell, and the evaporator "sponge" turned black.

I found this Kaz Bacteriological And ordered it. My problem is solved. A few drops of this fluid put in the water and eliminates the bacteria that cause the problem.

The smell is gone. The blackness is gone, and the air is now refreshing. I recommend this product.

These are getting tough to find locally -it used to be I could walk into Sears and walk out with a box, but now they're only interested in selling me the more expensive "type B" HEPA filters that these carbon filters fit over.

There are four of these per box, yet only three are needed per change in our Holmes HAP 650 purifier. The purifier is in use in a converted basement bedroom in the house -it has a moisture control problem, we have the diaper changing table in there, and we own dogs. The evidence is clear every time we change these filters. Not only is there a lot of dust, dander, pet hair and whatever collected in these, but the smell of the room becomes noticeably improved every filter change.

The main function of these filters is to keep the more expensive HEPA filter beneath Holmes HAPF600D from getting clogged. They can be rinsed out under the faucet, by the way, if you don't mind the hassle of the cleaning and the drying. For us, changing these charcoal pre-filters out ever 3-4 months gives us about a years worth of use on the HEPA filters behind them.

Replacement is simple enough: just open the door, pull out the old pads if they're yucky, and the new ones press into place.

My only gripes with these are, for the price they're charging, they ought to put six in the box to provide two full changes. But I do appreciate that they keep the HEPA filters unobstructed for a full year.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

I've owned a few Holmes air purifiers over the last ten years and their effectiveness is immediately evidenced by all the dust, particles and cat hair that get trapped in these carbon prefilters. However, this time around I noticed something that I'm almost positive was not the case before...the carbon prefilters do NOT entirely cover the HEPA filter. This will allow particles to enter the HEPA filter on the edges and surely decrease the useful life of the (more expensive) HEPA filters. These are GENUINE Holmes prefilters, they should NOT leave a gap around the edge of the HEPA filter. The gap isn't HUGE, but there is a gap. This is a big disappointment to me.

Please see my photo under "customer photos".

These are exactly the same as the ones that came with the unit. Fits well, good quality.

Honest reviews on Holmes HAPF60-U3 Carbon Replacement Filter

The actual Holmes air filter wasn't a bad price, but the HEPA and Carbon Filters are WAY expensive. There's absolutely NO reason why a couple sheets of carbon should be $14 or HEPA replacements $24 and up. A complete replacement of all 3 HEPAs and Carbon Filters will run you $200!

A third party manufacturer needs to undercut these ridiculous OEM replacement prices. Replacing everything every 6 months like recommended is outrageously more expensive than the filter.

That said, the Holmes HEPA filter does a great job of clearing out the air in a room. I suppose that comes with a STEEP price.

This looked like the best ultrasonic humidifier in my price range. I actually followed the instructions in the manual to set it up, but when I turned it on it starting leaking from the bottom and eventually from one of the legs. This seemed to only occur when I turned the unit on. I unplugged it to check I'd attached the filter properly and screwed on the filler cap tightly, but it still leaked. No matter what I tried or what settings I selected it leaked. I looked online to troubleshoot--but take a look, there are very few reviews outside the 10 on Amazon right now. I went to the Heaven Fresh website...you've got to check this out. The Customer Service link on the bottom links to nothing, and the About Us page is filler!

I've never written a review on Amazon before, but felt like I had to say something after so much frustration.

Purchased based on other reviews. Could not be more pleased. Local humidity in CarefreeAZ frequently under 15%. While great for old joints and knuckles it is rough on sinuses. Arrived promptly. Well packed. Clear instructions. Filled and running in less than 10 mins. NOTE. We do have softened and reverse osmosis water. After running nearly non stop for 2 weeks, house has settled at 45% humidity. Unit cycles off and on by itself. Very very quiet nearly silent My fridge makes more noise. Lovely. Just lovely. No sinus headaches. No nose bleeds from too dry. Just make sure filler cap is snug. If loose it will leak, but that is operator error, not manufacturing flaw. AWESOME. Worth every penny.

I have to say I am really happy with this Ultrasonic humidifier. I don't use the warm mist, so I can't comment on that, but I really like the cool setting and the mist it produces. My husband recently had sinus surgery and we have had to keep our windows closed with the air-conditioning going. This was really drying him out. We have tried other units before, but they were always too noisy. This one is great. Very quiet. I would highly recommend.

I've had this humidifier for a couple weeks now and overall it works pretty well but there's one really annoying design flaw. The cap that contains the filter and seals the tank is not very well designed. What I've found is that if I don't screw it on very tightly, it leaks. If I do screw it on very tightly it takes a lot of force to get it back off the tank. So every time I go to refill it, it's a struggle to get it open.

Honestly I'm not sure i'd recommend this humidifier purely based on this flaw. As well as it works in every other respect, you'll have to refill it routinely and that cap will likely drive you nuts.

UPDATE I've now had this humidifier for a while and my opinion of it is dwindling. I seem to have mastered how to tighten the cap just right so that it doesn't leak but isn't a nightly struggle to take the cap back off. That said, I've realized that the humidity sensor on the device is terrible. I'll walk into my room, and feel like I'm in a swamp. I look at the readings on the humidifier and it's showing only 30ish% humidity, but on my humidistat it will be up in the 60's. So this means I go through water much more quickly than I should and presumably at greater risk for mold issues, etc.

The main problem in all of this is that I would think at the price I should be getting a pretty feature filled humidifier that works well. Instead it seems the features don't really work as well as they should and it's more of a hassle than the cheap humidifier I replaced.
