I spent an entire day researching humidifiers and I would like to share my results while they are fresh in my mind. Spoiler... I ended up purchasing the Honeywell HWM-950 Warm Mist.

If you have have spent any time looking at reviews you will notice that there are several different types of humidifiers and they all have pros and cons. When a possible con is mold I believe it pays to be diligent. Here are the results of my research. Please note, this review only covers single room humidifiers, not house humidifiers. Note: All humidifiers will grow mold, some more than others. Make sure to follow the manufactures guidelines for cleaning.

I found that there are 4 main types:

1. Warm mist

2. Cool mist (Ultrasonic)

3a. Evaporative (Wick)

3b. Recirculating Evaporative (Wick)

Pros and Cons of each style

1. Warm Mist

"These humidifiers actually boil the water which causes a distilled steam to be expelled into the room. About.com

Pros:

No filters needed

Medication can be evaporated with the steam heat in some models

It feels best in a cool room in the winter. (Evaporative actually creates a breeze which will make a cold room feel colder)

Cons:

RISK OF FIRE: Take this very seriously. Warm mist units should never be left operating when nobody is in the house. Yes, they all have a low water automatic shut off, but if that fails these units can cause a fire.

Risk of burn: This unit boils the water, so there is a hot element that can burn if touched. This is not safe around small children.

2. Cool Mist (Ultrasonic)

"An ultrasonic humidifier is one that uses high-frequency sound vibrations to produce an extra fine water mist that is then expelled to add moisture to the room" About.com

If I were to buy a cool mist humidifier, I would buy this one:

Crane 2.3 Gallon COOL Mist humidifier, White and Blue

Pros:

No wick needed.

No hot element

The moister may spread more evenly through the room because it is not heated

Cons:

Since water is not boiled, bacteria present in the water may be dispersed into the air.

Mineral deposits in the water will be expelled with the mist causing a white dust to appear in the room around the humidifier. Reports say that filtered or distilled water will take care of this problem.

3a. Evaporative (Wick)

Air is pushed through a wick that is sitting in water. The air collects moister as it moves through the wick.

Pros:

No hot element.

These seem to distribute moister the best.

Cons:

Needs filters.

Mold will grow on the filter.

Will cause airflow in the room, which will make a cool room feel colder.

3b. Recirculating Evaporative (Wick)

Same as above air is pushed through a wick that is sitting in water. The air collects moister as it moves through the wick. However as the name implies water is recirculated throughout the unit with a small pump. This reduces the chance of bacteria and mold growing. It will also move more moisture into the air. With the Recirculating Evaporative humidifier water is dropped on the filter from the top rather than being absorbed from the bottom as a standard Evaporative humidifier.

If I were to buy this type, I would buy this one:

Lasko 1128 9-Gallon Evaporative Recirculating Humidifier

Pros:

Moves more moister than a standard Evaporative hunidifier.

Reduces build up of mold and bacteria because water is constantly moving.

Cons:

Needs filters.

More moving parts means more can break.

More parts means more to clean.

Will cause airflow in the room, which will make a cool room feel colder.

Conclusion:

Since I live in a cool space I decided that the best solution for me would be a warm mist humidifier. I purchased the Honeywell HWM-950 for the following reasons

Warm mist feels better in the cold.

Good price $29 shipped.

Easy to clean. (There is a large enough opening in the water tank to place my hand in.

Moves a lot of water (1.25 gallon tank is evaporated in about 8 hours)

I have been running it every night for a several of weeks and I can sleep much better now. The unit is working as expected so far with no problems.

My second choice would be Lasko 1128 because it evaporates a tremendous amount of water and recirculates the water.

The Honeywell HWM-950 is a great little humidifier. I bought one several weeks ago and have ran it continuously since. To use the unit: Fill container, secure lid, place on machine, turn on (high or low), after it empties it will auto shutoff/dial turns red, shut it off for a minute to reset it, refill the container, turn it on. I'm buying another in case they discontinue.

Pros:

Warm Mist Kills bacteria and only requires periodic cleaning.

No Filters.

High and Low setting.

Auto-Off feature turning dial red easy to understand.

Easy to use

Medicine Cup on Top.

Cons: Only available in this ~1 gallon size

WARNING: NEVER leave your home with an appliance on that has a heating element as it is a fire hazard and no "auto-off" is fault less! Sister had a kitchen fire after when her dishwashers heating element solenoid locked on melting plastic eventually igniting it.

Even on high setting it's quieter than other warm humidifiers. It's a small humidifier so it's good for a small to medium size room only. Easy to clean and fill... The only con is I don't understand why they made the water tank dark brown. It makes it hard to see the water level. BUT if it runs out of water it has an auto shut-off.

All in all it's a good well made humidifier at a good price.. Well worth the money.

Honest reviews on Honeywell HWM-950 Filter Free Warm Moisture Humidifier

For this price, the product is more decent than others I have used. The design is simple, easy to use, and good for a bed room size. I especially like the large tank opening for refilling and cleaning. Cleaning and maintenance would be the same like any others. It really depends on the minenal level in your water. But I rather have to clean it more often than having that white dust flying in the air you breath in. I made a mistake spending way too much on another expensive model (AOS U650 Digital Warm & Cool Mist Ultrasonic), which does tiny bit better but cost 8 times more than this HWM-950. I would definitely recommend this product for those who live in cold Winter like Minnesota. It does the job for much less.

Unlike other reviewers, I had no problems with the noise level of this humidifier, and it worked just fine to make the air more pleasant. However, this think leaks like crazy! The base, under where the tank sits, is divided into multiple sections, and the water is supposed to come out of the tank into one of the sections and flow through to where the heating element is (at the bottom of the tall black plastic part). What actually happens is, over the course of a few hours, the flow of water from the tank is too fast so the area where water is supposed to be slowly overflows into the other areas where water is not supposed to be. The other sections of the base fill up with water, and eventually water starts seeping out of the crack between the bottom of the tank and the top of the base. This happens consistently whether the humidifier is left off with a full tank or run on high from the moment it's filled until the tank is empty.

Depending on what kind of surface you put the humidifier on, this might only ruin the surface (best case) or might actually create a dangerous situation where the power cord (which comes out of the base very close to the bottom) is sitting in a pool of water. I'm returning this immediately and I recommend that no one else buys it.

Review of Sungold Ultrasonic Ionizer Humidifier

Sungold Ultrasonic Ionizer Humidifier
Customer Ratings: 5 stars

We purchased this one because our neighbors recommended it. Living in Denver we don't have a lot of humidity. I love that this one does not only have the ionizer but you can also control the level of steam and humidity output. It is super quiet and with the large opening of the tank fairly easy to clean.

I just wish they also made a smaller version.

Our Son had a stuffy nose when he was born and the doctor recommended a Humidifier to help him. After sifting through hundreds of types of Humidifiers, we chose this one. And it has paid off, almost over night, the humidifier filled the room with great moisture in the air, as well as the Ionizer purifying the air that he was breathing. The adjustable knobs are pretty self explanatory but be careful you don't put too much moisture. I found out when I stepped onto the wood flooring and the condensation had covered a good bit of the floor (slippery). Easy to refill with water, but as with any humidifier you have to keep the bottom clean, will get dirty in a couple of days of constant use. Recommend a toothbrush or bottom of a bottle brush to clean around the connection between the blue plastic and the white bottom.

DeLonghi PAC700T Pinguino Portable Air Conditioner
Customer Ratings: 2.5 stars

I purchased the PAC600T (one step below this unit) from Amazon one year ago. When it arrived, I filled the tank with water, inserted it in the unit and my floor was covered with water less than a minute later. Turns out the unit's plastic base housing was cracked during shipment. Amazon replaced the unit, with the same results for the second unit. At that same time, there must have been lots of returns because Amazon stopped selling the unit. I stepped up to this unit with its slightly higher BTUs and hefty price.

The unit arrived fine, no leaks after filling with water, and I used it most of last summer (in a 14' x 20' room with average height ceiling). The unit puts out cool, definitely not cold, air. The only way to really use the unit is to get it started when the temperature isn't too high, then keep it running. I don't think it would be able to cool a warm room. It simply isn't overly powerful. That may have to do with the fact that it operates at 110 volt, rather than 220 like many AC units that are built into apartment walls.

The unit has been sitting behind my couch all winter. When I went to use it this year, the removable plastic water tank was cracked. It was emptied at the end of the season and not exposed to excessive temperatures, so I don't know what that's about.

I assumed that with the high BTU (and price tag), this would be the unit to use. But I'm going to try one of the less expensive units this year and check out its performance.

I bought 2 units last year. At first it worked fine. Then, this season, when I started to use the air conditioners, one of the unit leaked at the base, ruining my wood floor. I thought I could just use it without water, and I found it to be very insufficient to cool off the room. I have used different models of pinguino and I found that the newer models are more problematic. If it isn't leaking, then it is the alarm light that kept coming on, shutting down the unit. I followed the maintenance procedure to clean the unit, but it doesn't seem to help. I am fed up with pinquino. I think I may have to switch back to those window units.

This product,DeLonghi 700T,was about the worst purchase that I have ever made. The unit ran for 10 mins and then shut off. After several attempts,we finally found the service center that replaced the fan motor--after a 4 month wait for the part. But that did not fix the problem--the unit shuts down after a short run.Because all of this has taken so long,Delonghi says that the warranty is now limited and that I have to take the unit to a service center 50 miles away.It has been close to 2 years and I still do not have a functioning air conditioner.

Honest reviews on DeLonghi PAC700T Pinguino Portable Air Conditioner

I purchased a Pinguino PAC 700T 3 years ago. Rated at 12,000 BTUs, it cools about as well as a 6000 BTU in-window unit. However, at the beginning of this summer season, I find that it no longer cools or dehumidifies air. I found DeLonghi's central service number (800-322-3848 in case you need it) and asked for my nearest service/repair center. They informed me that they no longer have any repair centers in Massachusetts. They suggested that I take the unit to Hartford, CT, about 2 hours from Boston where I live. Having paid $1300 for this unit just 3 years ago, I expected better service than this. It appears that DeLonghi maybe doesn't care too much about supporting their products after the sale. This will be my last DeLonghi product of any kind.

I bought the 700 Pinquino A/C unit because of its excellent energy efficiency and quiet operation. I liked the looks too, so many others look so ugly that I would not have them in my livingroom. I have had the unit for two years now, and so far no problems at all. It works great, and is very quiet, and cools my 700sqft room well, although it takes a while when above 90F. The water reservoir lasts about a day before needing refilling. My only complaint is a minor one: The plastic finish is of good quality, but it scratches easily when moving the unit around and you bump into something. If it had some color matching bumper strips or something around its middle section, that might help. I am happy with this unit.

I am new to aromatherapy and bought this diffuser because the price was very reasonable. It unit is larger that I would have liked it but there are several mist setting, the aromatherapy is very good 2. The Diffuser only comes with 2 reusable wicks. These are now frayed and I can't used my diffuser for aromatherapy. I emailed the company several times and I told they would be here in a few week.....what was 2 months ago....Now they just won't answer my emails. The diffuser is nice. I would buy from someone else that can sell more wicks.

This is a very good compromise for those who want a humidifier that can run overnight (or more) when filled (or more) and an optional diffuser for essential oils. The essential oil container can hold up to an ounce of liquid which is held securely in the base. It is easy to handle with its simple yet elegant design.

I own two and other products from Aroma Lumin and The Body Complete provides good service.

September 2013 Update GE did an exchange on the THIRD unit that failed when turned-on May 2013. This time they did not require I "buy" another unit then send in a voucher to claim my money. I picked-up the FOURTH unit at my local dealer on May 10,2013. It lasted until around labor day September 2, 2013. The same failure mode as before. Evaporator coil is not getting cold and the compressor is not running. I'm guessing the refrigerant has again leaked out. This time I also connected my AC Current meter to compare the power draw when it fails as compared to when it's operating. The current draw now is about 2 Amps (running fan ~240 Watts) and when it actually is working and the compressor is running, the current is closer to 6 Amps (~720 Watts). Given the fact that the other three units all lost their refrigerant while sitting idle over the Winter, I have no plans of using my Warranty now to get another (FIFTH) unit to sit around until next Spring. I'll wait until May 1, 2014 to claim number 5. These Dehumidifier failures are ridiculous. When is GE going to wake up and change suppliers or just drop the whole line. Looking at the pile of junk Dehumidifiers sitting in the junk pile at the dealer, this has to be a money loosing product line.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll start this review with the GE ADER65LN Dehumidifier I bought in May 2010 after two other brands failed a few months after their warrenty expired. I had an LG that had its' compressor fail. Repair costs were almost as much as a new one. So I scraped it and bought a Kenmore at Sears. That one lasted as about as long as the LG with another compressor failure. When I looked inside the cabinet I found the Kenmore was made by LG (it turns out most all residential dehumidifier internals are made by Cree in China).

I then researched Consumer Reports and online reviews for the most reliable and best operating dehumidifier. The GE was rated the best so I bought one. I went to use it in May 2011 and guess what? It didn't work. I checked the evaporator coil and it was not getting cold. This time I was still under warrenty so I took it into the dealer for repair. I got a call back and was told the the compressor was bad. Big surprise! GE is giving me a rebate coupon for the price I payed for the unit. I must buy another GE dehumidifier and send a copy of the invoice and the coupon to get my money back. This time I got the "updated" GE ADER65LP.

I'm a graduate engineer that knows a dehumidier is not "rocket science". The reliability of the LG, Kenmore (LG) and GE is terrible. I had a Fedders dehumidifier for 25 years and only replaced it because I needed more capacity. Never had one problem with Fedders, but it was made in the USA!

I'm now on my THIRD GE 65 pint Dehumidifier Failure!!! In June 2012 I had the second dehumidifier fail, the ADER65LP, same failure mode as the ADER65LN. I again carried it back to the dealer's service department and they confirmed the compressor was dead. I received another voucher to send in AFTER I purchased the third GE 65 pint dehumidifier, an ADER65LQ Model. That one lasted all Summer of 2012. I put the unit away for the winter and just took it out today to see if it still worked before the humidity increased during the Summer. Guess what? It doesn't work! I ran the unit for 4 hours in a 70 F Basement room with 60 RH. I checked the evaporator coils and they are not getting cold. The compressor is running and feels hot. I'm guessing the refrigerant has leaked out. I'm taking it in again to the service department, but this is the last time. These China made units are JUNK!

This is a cheap China junk machine with a GE label on it; mine only lasted 1-1/2 years! Just long enough to be out of waranty. My Mom's forty year old, usa made GE model is still running!

Bottom line: Designed to fail! Pay a $1000 and buy a usa model.

Best Deals for GE Dehumidifier ADER65LQ

Bought this dehumidifier back in April for my new house. Went with a 65 pint unit as the previous owner only ran a 50 pinter. Seemed to work ok out the box, however it seemed to run frequently. It would run for 15-20mins then shut off for 5-10mins before starting again. It would have trouble getting the humidity below 65%, but that was good enough for me & I thought this was due to the size of my basement. Seemed to work ok most of the summer, but now the unit is really struggling seems more & more so. It runs constantly non-stop and can't get the humidity below 80%. It is still removing the water from the air, but not nearly as much as it was. The unit also dripped what appears to be an oil stain on my floor. Its a concrete floor, but the wet spot under it won't go away at all. The coils also keep freezing up no matter how long I let it thaw out. The basement has been a constant 68* this whole time and I regularly clean it. GE's customer service is terrible. All I have been getting is a runaround with them for the past month. They don't really seem to care much about their customers or stand behind their products. Its like a cowardish game to them. Shame really, GE used to be a great brand, but I guess since they sold out to the Chinese they are unable to build quality products or have a real customer service. I guess the only thing I did with purchasing this was give away $200something dollars to the pockets of some greedy business man.

Honest reviews on GE Dehumidifier ADER65LQ

Purchased first one from ABT. It lasted one season. As with others' experience, fan works but no cooling therefore no de-humidification. GE provided credit for purchase of another GE product. Purchased another unit with credit. Again, failed after one season. Also purchased extended warranty. Will use proceeds to purchase non-GE dehumidifier (old and no doubt less efficient Westinghouse dehumidifier still working well after 30 some odd years). Will notify EPA that units are suspected of failing because of refrigerant leakage (illegal to leak CFCs into atmosphere). Will write letter to J. Immelt, head of GE and fellow HBS alum regarding crap product GE is putting out under its name. Outrageous situation.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for GE Dehumidifier ADER65LQ

This is my second dehumidifier from GE. The first one lasted a couple of years, stopped working and was recalled due to fire hazard. The second and third ones lasted 2 years and then also stopped working. The fans and compressors are running, but no longer removes moisture. When they worked they did the job fine, but unless you want to replace every two years, I recommend buyers avoid GE. Had similar experiences with GE washers....but that's another story. One feature I do like is the integrated carry handle which makes it a little bit easier to throw it as far as you can after it prematurely fails.

I bought this gift for my brother since in the winter its really dry and this is a good way to humidify the house with a cool look to it. I would recommend using distilled water with it so no calcium deposits build up. I think this is a great product for kids who like fountains or even adults who need a more appealing humidifier

It is very pretty but I was expecting the mist to be more dramatic and have a humidifying effect which it really doesn't . It does look good though.

I had seen one of these mist lamps at a friends place and had wanted to get one for a long time. I ordered this one before the holiday season so I would be able to use it as a decoration as well as to boost up the humidity while the heater is running.

I love the look of it. It looks awesome. My only complaint is that the base of the stand should have been a little wider to make it a bit more stable. It is too easy to tip over. Especially if you have a pet that might brush against it like we do.

This water treatment for humidifiers is called Golden Solution, and I have been using it in my Vornado 4.2 gal. humidifier each winter since 2005. Just one ounce per two gallons of water keeps mineral deposits from forming on the water tanks and wicks. Two gallons of Golden Solution last one winter in my apartment. The wicks last two months instead of one, due to the use of the Golden Solution.

I like the saying, Lifes too short for a cheap cigar. I would spend a fortune on cigars, buying them in shops that charge obscenely, instead of buying a box online where you save a fortune, problem is, I don't smoke everyday, but the fear of drying out the sticks in the box, pushes me to smoke more. I tried the gel, even bought a digital higrometer to insure that the gel was working properly, even though the readings seem to indicate all was well, the cigars would either be too moist or too dry, This little baby works as advertised. The unit comes factory set at 70. I find that when I scale it down to 68, my cigars smoke great. The fact that you can adjust the humidity to what you want, and so easily, sold me on this unit. You have to get the instructions on their site, thought that was odd, but its PDF and free, and easy to find, so no biggy. Other posters have said it feels flimsy, and it does, I wouldnt suggest tousling it, but if you have a humidor on your desk and it's stationary, then this things great, has a little fan in it to regulate humidity which is monitored by a bright red digital display that reads the temp every 5 sec. Try and keep your humidor door closed as much as possible, and make sure you have the "proper" ratio of cigars to humidor size, and set this thing and forget it. Uses only Distilled water, when you get this device, take the cartridge out, place it in a bowl of D. water and soak it for 4 minutes, dry it off, collect any water run-off and set this thing inside with the included strip power cord, also comes with a battery unit, and Batteries!!! And forget it, I don't want to look at my humidor, I just want to know that its working and so far, for the few weeks I've had it, it's a completly care free operation.

Best Deals for Cigar Oasis Ultra Electonic Humidifier

Very nice product, operates smoothly, easy to assemble and keeps my cigars at the correct humidity as advertised. I would recommend this product highly.

Honest reviews on Cigar Oasis Ultra Electonic Humidifier

I gave this item a 4 instead of 5 for 2 small reasons.

1. For anyone who has a medium to small humidor that they might be putting this in, this review is for you. I have a medium size humidor. It holds around 120 200 cigars and is made up of about 6 shelves. The problem is how it works. The unit blows out the humid air which bounces off the top or sides and the is read by the unit. This makes it think the humidity is at the 70% when the rest of the humidor is actually around 64 or 65%. So if you are going to be placing this unit in a somewhat tight space, I would recommend having another hydrometer on the opposite end of the box to get an accurate reading and adjust the desired humidity to compensate for the inaccurate reading.

2. The second reason kind of goes with the problem previously listed. The unit measures down to the tenth decimal place. So I wish it had some way of setting a range so that it turns on when the humidity drops below 70.0% and turns off when it goes above 71.0%. This would keep it from doing what it has been doing which is... on for a few seconds... off for a few seconds... on for a few seconds... then off for a few seconds... and so on.

Overall it does the job and I would recommend it. It just could be a little better, especially for spending close to $70 on it.

I have a custom made Rocky Patel humidor that holds 150 cigars. I rarely have more than 80 cigars in it as I like to rotate my stock every few months. I stumbled across this humidifier and I am very pleased I did. I have read the other reviews and I can say that I have had zero problems. It has brought back to life some of my older Rocky Patel's that were dry. It holds a constant humidity of 70 degrees that is programmable and it shuts off automatically at set humidity. It also holds a 2 month supply of water using distilled water. It really is a nice humidifier that works well. And it blows away the standard cheap ones that come with humidors that you have to constantly monitor.

Update on 4-8-2012. The 2 month supply of distilled water is a tad on the long side. I have found that it needs to be refilled about every 3 weeks with moderate opening of your humidor. Still a great piece of equipment. I love it.

The opening to put the water in is difficult to unscrew, to refill it you have to pull the water holder off the unit, so water gets everywhere... The unit also doesn't dry naturally in other words even if the water level runs out it still stays web inside the unit. An opening at the top of the unit would be better design and made it easier to let dry out if not in use. Had to travel for work and now realize I'm 5 days past return date. And to return I'd have to print out labels why can't I just fill out the request online and ship it back? Just kinda bummed about the whole situation.

Started overflowing on first use. I'm glad I hadn't fallen asleep yet, would have been very dangerous if the water had reached the powerstrips before I noticed.

Return policy is extremely tedious -I'd recommend you go and pick it up from a local store. It seems humidifier technology is not that evolved yet, better to purchase it in a way that is easily returnable.

Honest reviews on Air-O-Swiss Refurbished 7145 Ultrasonic Humidifier - Cool Mist

We are very pleased with the wonderful humidifier. I suffer from severe allergies and the dry heat in the winter wreaks havoc for me. Since we purchased this Air-O-Swiss humidifier, I can sleep at night and do not have to get up in the middle of the night to take more Sudafed. It is quiet enough for your bedroom too, but you do have to get used to a little bit of noise. I am a light sleeper however and it doesn't bother me at all.
