The heat index is in it's triple digit numbers here in Texas. Even the garage is showing 105 with the door open and a fan running. can't get the inside lower than 85-86 degrees. The AC only gets a break at night. I needed something more and I got it. After ordering my Sunpentown Evaporative Air Cooler SF-608R, it arrived in about 4-days and was put to work. The air started to cool down slowly. Let me say that even though this little cooler can't cover the size of the front room, it helped in bringing down the temp to where we run it at 80 degrees.

I'm happy to say that I'm loving it, because heat is one thing that can bring me down at my age after open heart surgery. It's made for a smaller room, but I still use it in a much larger room and it did help! Do I recommend it? YES! I only wish I had the cash flow to get a much bigger one for the garage.

If Your going to spend $110 on this item , spend $40 more and get a KuulAire. For $145 you can get a fantastic little Kuulaire swamp cooler. For $175 you can get an amazing Kuulair swamp cooler that blows like a large A/C unit. They make some unbelievable and great looking swamp coolers. They aren't going to be as quiet as this Sunpentown but this things really doesn't do much anyway. I live in a very dry climate in Colorado and this Sunpentown doesn't cool the air more than 2 degrees MAX. It truly is a complete waste of money.

My home office doesn't have a window that opens to put in a window AC unit, and the only wall I could cut through to vent a portable unit is visible from the street. So I bought this Sunpentown unit about 5 years ago.

It cools the 9 X 12 office by about 5 degrees here in the arid high desert. The office doesn't have a door, and I think it would lower the temps a few more degrees if the space was closed.

I have it about 4' from my computer, and have it set to swing back and forth, so it blows on the computer to keep it cool (and it does a good job) then it swings to my arm and it does feel quite cool even today when it's 95 outside and 85 in the hall just outside the office. I can immediately feel the temperature difference when I walk into the unairconditioned living room.

I put a couple bigger chunks of ice in the top bin along with a tray of regular sized ice cubes which melt fast enough to keep the fabric filter/wick damp and cool. I add to the ice about every 2 hours so I use up 5 to 7 trays of the smaller cubes and 8 or 10 larger chunks -which are about 3" square and 2" thick, made in old tupperware type containers -between 10 am and 7 pm.

I don't think having ice water in the lower compartment is worth it unless it gets completely unbearable in here. You need a couple gallons of water/ice in the lower compartment to get the level high enough to run the recirc pump, and the ice you need to cool that quantity of water and keep it cool is prohibitive unless you have 1.5 or more extra cubic feet of space in your freezer, which I do not. Plus, when you add ice it eventually fills the reservoir too high so every few hours you have to wheel the unit somewhere to drain half the water out before you can fit more ice in. For me, the outside temp has to be 110 or higher to make it worth clearing out freezer space and all the extra effort.

It works better than just a fan, and I think it was worth the price, because it was my only option other than a box fan. The heat coming off my monitor and computer processor heats up the room by several degrees and was completely unbearable before I got this unit. Now I can have the computer on all day without miserable heat.

It wasn't cooling very well earlier this year, so I finally ran some vinegar thru it and thru the recirc pump then took it apart to clean. After 5 years it's now working like it did when new. It probably should be cleaned every fall before putting it into storage to get the best performance.

I bought this at Kmart for $21. They had extra filters there, and they're available online. The unit is in my 2-year-old's room and is very quiet. You do have to snap the lid on tightly, but then it stays in place. It used only about 1/4 of the water in the chamber overnight. The instructions recommend a thorough cleaning with vinegar once a week, which I will definitely do. A switch on the body of the humidifier would be nice (there's a dial-type power switch on the cord). I'm sure a $100+ unit would be more attractive and have more features, but for my needs this works fine.

We've had this humidifier for about 2 years now and use it only occasionally. The reason we use it sparingly is because it is way too loud. It has a very annoying vibrational noise that can be damped by pushing down hard on the lid. Since I can't stand next to it pushing the lid down all night, we have to put up with the amazingly loud humming. The other problem with this humidifier is that it is hard to clean inside the tube that draws-up the water. It is removable, but you need to have pipe-cleaners to get inside it. The non-removable disc in the lid is also filled with gunk that I can't get out. Save your money!

I guess you get what you pay for, I am going to get a more expensive one next but sure wish I could have saved this $30 from the beginning.

Reading the other reviews, you'd think you were making the biggest mistake of your life buying this great little machine. It's not loud at all I don't know what they're talking about. And it blows a giant stream of cool mist that has helped our newborn breathe freely in the humidity-free Arizona air. Only thing is, and I don't know why, it takes about 3 initial runs before full mist capacity is met. Instructions even forewarn this it has to get broken in somehow. Well, once you've done that, it's awesome, honestly. Just keep it clean.

I just purchased this for a rental property of mine and have been using it for around 1 week. This unit is definitely not fancy, consists of a the fan/motor unit, 2 wicks, and around 3-4 gallon tank for the water. The fan has 4 speed settings, and it has a humidity detection unit that can be set in 20% intervals from 20% to 90% (constant) run. It claims to cover around 1100 sq feet, and so far it is easily doing that. Here are the negatives:

1. Filling is a bit of a hassle. You have to lift the top off and set it aside. The cord tethers you to a small radius of the unit to do this

2. On fan speeds of 3 and 4, the unit can be quite loud. 1 and 2 are soft enough to actually be used in a bedroom or living room.

3. It uses two wicks, costing on average between 10 and 15 dollars a piece. This can be costly to change them if you have really hard water like some of my houses.

4. I had to exchange the unit one time after 1 days use. The motor unit was making a loud "buzzing noise" above the noise of the fan, like a starter in a florescent light continually being charged. The replacement one I have is working good.

I purchased because I did not have many choices in the rural area, nor did I have the budget to invest in another Honeywell HCM-6009 Quietcare, so this will suffice. I will keep this unit tucked in the corner of the dining room, away from the living area, but close enough to cover the bedrooms upstairs. For the price, this will serve it's purpose, but there are better units out there.

Although this model did a fine job of humidifying the air when it worked, it only worked for about 2 months before the motor died. Another Essick model I bought suffered the same fate, so it appears that this brand simply makes sub-par products. Spend a bit money and get something better.

This is one of the worst humidifiers I've ever purchased.

The humidistat doesn't work properly. It thinks the current room humidity is much higher than it actually is. Thus the machine never automatically runs. Before I returned it I had to use the manual setting because it would never run when set to auto.

The water reservoir is also rather strange. The filters sit completely submerged in water.

The overall design is downright idiotic. The intake (dry air) and exhaust (moist air) are set on the top of the machine right next to each other. This means that newly moistened air is drawn right back into the machine. I believe this is why the humidistat is inaccurate. It just measures the humidity of the newly moistened are and not the humidity of the room.

Like I said before I ended up returning this unit and consequently found a much better unit that I am 100% satisfied with.

Botton lineIf you want a humidifier with a humidistat this unit is NOT for you. The humidistat doesn't work.

This item isn't as "high tech" or "high style" as others on the market; but it

consistently performs to get the job done. (It's also not as "high priced").

It's easy to fill...quiet...and tends to disappear into its surroundings.

Filters do need replacing...but Amazon has them at reasonable cost and quick delivery.

I have three of these units around our home one in a bedroom, and two in a large living room.

Two smaller units are easier than a large one, we've found, for both filling and flexible placement.

Purched this to replace a good quality sonic humidifer which did not provide enough humidity to avoid shocking my dog. Plugged this one in, filled it up and set fan at lowest speed, no more shocks! Additionally, i prefer to fill a watering can and carry to humidifier and dump than upending a tank and carrying it to the sink, filling up, then carrying leaking tank across my room and replacing it on the unit.

Positives: works well, dont have to constantly refill 2x daily as ultrasonic required

So, I'm a college student who spent this winter in an old campus house with an overactive heating system. Our bedroom was so dry that our door shrunk and we regularly woke up with cracked lips and nosebleeds. We needed a humidifier, but didn't want to spend big bucks on one that might only get used for one season. The kids' humidifiers are cheaper than the more powerful "adult" ones, and this one got good reviews, so we got him and named him Flippy.

He's pretty good at his job. We turn him on full-blast at night and he puffs out clouds of cool steam until morning. It's not enough that the room is humid, or even normal moisture levels (it's a REALLY dry room!), but he definitely does help. If you fill him up, he'll easily run for a whole night, and you can adjust the amount of moisture he puts out. It's enough to make a difference in a small-to-average bedroom, but might not be practical for a large room.

It took a few tries for him to really "warm up," so to speak, and really produce that big, visible stream of cloud, but after a few days, he got the hang of it. We like him. The only problem we had was that he has a bright orange LED on the side to tell you when he's on, and it was a little bright for us, so we had to cover it up in order to sleep. He isn't loud, and the little humming noise he makes is just a little white noise that doesn't disturb sleep or anything. I could see it being irritating if we kept it on day and night, while we were trying to talk and study, but it's fine for the night. We have a couple fans going in the room anyway (Did I mention our heater?), so it's not even the loudest thing in the room. It's quieter than a desk fan.

We just fill him with tap water, so he's developed some hard water buildup (I think?) that I'm not sure it's practical to try and clean, so that's too bad. It's not causing problems, though, so we don't particularly care. I'm sure you can be fancy and use distilled water or softened water or something if you're worried about a little white buildup forming.

I think he'd be fine for a child's room, or even immature young adults like ourselves. We don't need him anymore (not so dry now that it's Midwestern summer), but I'm keeping him around in case I ever catch bronchitis or something. Or for next winter. I think he'll be handy. And he's very cute, especially when he's on and the cloud is billowing out from his blowhole. I recommend Flippy if you need a little extra humidity for a smallish room.

We bought this humidifier and were really happy with it for five weeks. Then, one night, my wife noticed a burning smell in my son's room. Was it his new night light? Nope. The space heater? No again.

It was this cute little humidifier. It's cute, at least, until it emits a burning smell. One night later, I turned it on to see if it was any better and it was not just giving off a burning smell, but actually smoking, too.

My son loves this humidifer! It helps that he picked it out with me on amazon (he's 2 1/2 and very bossy). It's smaller than the Crane Cow we had before, so we fill it every other day. But because it's smaller it doesn't take up as much room, it hasn't spilled or leaked, it's very stable, the hum is pretty generic white noise expected of any humidier but it actually glugs less than our old one did, it humidifies well in a good arc, and did I mention my son loves it? He gets excited about us filling it "dolphin is thirsty!" and he loves turning it on and off himself. Oh, and yes, that little indicator light is one of the brightest lights I've ever seenbut my son decided he really likes the light, and that it's "supposed" to be a night light. So anywaythanks!

Spent many hours researching how to install a whole house humidifier and this one was recommended many times. When our furnace got serviced this fall the technician also recommended we get a humidifier and when I asked him which model this is the one he recommended. It's really hard to find anyone selling this unit because the manufacturer doesn't want just anyone to install it, they recommend a technician so I was pretty happy when I found it here on Amazon.

After doing some research and a couple times watching this video on youtube() I decided to take the project on myself. It actually was a lot easier than I had expected. Aprilaire's instructions were pretty easy to follow and the automatic digital control gives you a great display in case an error code comes up.

If you are good at following instructions, and have some confidence you can save yourself around $300-$500 on the installation cost I was quoted from 4 different HVAC companies. I was able to complete the project in 3 hours. Another friend of mine installed the same unit in his house and he took just about the same amount of time, he might have been closer to 4 hours. So in 3-4 hours you will be sitting back enjoying the new humidifier.

Things You Will Need To Install Yourself:

* 3/4" PVC pipe (optional, i used it to run the 1/2" tubing into to continue to the drain instead of running the tubing all the way, I split into the same 3/4" coming out of the furnace)

* 1/4" copper tubing to run the hot water into the humidifier

* 1/2" plastic tubing to drain the water

* Sawzall or equivalent tool to cut sheet metal

* Low-Voltage wiring to wire the thermostat and thermometer (i bought 2 of these Coleman Cable 09631 CL2 Bulk Thermostat Cable, 18-Gauge 2-Conductor 50-Feet)

* 2 Electrical Terminals for the wiring

* Some wiring caps (medium size)

* Foil Tape (I bought 3M 3311-50 Scotch Foil Tape, 2-Inch-by-50-Yard)

* Pipe Cutter (I bought Ridgid 40617 1/4-Inch to 1-1/8-Inch Close Quarters Tubing Cutter)

It's been running for over a month now and I was able to notice a difference immediately. I even have a gauge on the second floor that measures humidity and it's constantly has the correct amount of humidity in the house. I had been researching whole house humidifiers for some time and finally decided on this Aprilaire Model 700 Automatic Whole-house Powered Humidifier with Digital Control from talking to local HVAC installers and reviews I located online. I checked around and the lowest I could find someone to install it for me was $350, so I decided to take the plunge and do it myself. I was a little apprehensive because I had never worked with a furnace or cutting into sheet metal before. I bought an inexpensive pair of sheet metal snippers and it was a little difficult, but not bad overall to cut the hole in the plenum. Home Depot proved to be invaluable in helping me with the plumbing connections. I used shark-bite fittings instead of the supplied saddle valve (every plumber I talked to advised me against using the saddle valve). I also used plastic pipe instead of copper. Overall I spent about $70 on supplies. I installed the unit on the supply side, as was recommended, but I could not justify hooking it into the hot water line and watch energy just pour down the drain. The instructions indicated a cold water supply was fine as long as the unit was mounted on the supply side. The unit does trickle water down the drain hose as it is operating, this is normal. My biggest apprehension was the wiring. I found some VERY helpful youtube videos of an HVAC installer somewhere in the midwest installing one of these in a clients home. I probably watched them 20 times during my own installation. One hiccup I encountered was after wiring everything according to the instructions, my unit powered on fine, but would come on when there was a call for heat, instead of waiting for the blower to come on. This made me extremely nervous as I didn't want water vapor blowing into the plenum before the blower was operating. A quick email to the youtube video publisher mentioned earlier confirmed my worry and he explained to wire the transformer into the HUM terminal neutral on the furnace board and to then use the power for the blower HEAT terminal for the power. The installation instructions made no mention of what is correct as to when the humidifer should come on, but for peace of mind, wiring as suggested by the HVAC installer was preferred. One additional step I took was to purchase some duct sealant that I then used to calk around the unit to seal off any gaps. I have already noticed a huge difference in the humidity level in our home, as we live in a very dry climate in SE Idaho. I was tired of spending money upon money buying table top humidifiers that required expensive filters or just broke down and were junk after a couple of years. This unit seems like it will meet my needs, I give it 5 stars and would encourage someone with general handy-man skills to go ahead and try installing, but to be prepared to ask questions if you get stuck.

I have installed the Aprilaire Model 700 a couple of months ago. It is working properly with a couple of adjustments. I made the connection for automatic setting (with a exterior temperature sensor).

When I received the humidifier I notice the "NEW IMPROVED WIRING DIAGRAM" (see picture). If you follow the wiring diagram, the humidifier will start working when there is a call for heat (connection "G").

The is a problem caused by the following: (1) my furnace fan wait for 1 minute -after the heat callto start running. But, the humidifier is already on and is blowing humidity into the system. (2) My basement is unfinished, and the humidity inside the returning duct goes down rather significantly (e.g. if the house's relative humidity (RH) is 40%, the returning duct might be 30%), yet once the furnace fan start running the RH stabilizes at the RH of the house. These two factor may create a very short run of the humidifier.

I read all the reviews, and one solution is to wire into the furnace control card. I found this rather difficult because I couldn't find the furnace' card (it is a Lennox) specifications. So, the solution I found is to install a DELAY ON MAKE (Timer with .03-10 minute adjustable delay and 6" wire leads, universal 18-240 VAC: you can get this timer in Amazon as well for a $15 aprox.) to install between the humidistat outputs (the second "H" connection) and one of the solenoid line (see picture and modified wiring diagram). I adjusted the time to 3 minutes, so the RH inside the duct system can stabilize before calling for humidity.

Since then, the humidifier does not blow air into the system when the furnace fan is not running, and also wait long enough to allow the RH inside the duct to stabilize.

Buyers Beware.

In the lower right-hand corner of the installer instruction sheet for the 700 & 700m is this note:

"The Model 700 is not suitable for installation on ducts with horizontal airflow. Performance will be reduced." This is an understatement; performance is horrible when mounted on a horizontal duct.

It appears that many HVAC dealers aren't aware of this limitation, and happily recommend it as "top-of-the-line." When installed horizontally, the Model 700's hardly work at all--even with hot water supplied--and the dealer flounders around scratching his *** while you suffer from dry eyes, cracked skin, and static charges around the house.

Great product, but can a lot of water passes through the unit which is wasteful and costly because it's hot water. I highly recommend NOT using the standard A35 Water Pad, but one of the more efficient "wick" type filters rated at 50% greater capacity. Several companies offer compatible products such as the Aprilaire A35-W Wick Water Panel, A35WPR Aprilaire 600 Humidifier Water Panel Paper Evaporator, or RPS BestAir A35W White Pad RPS #A35W Aprilaire350 Water Pad, or Honeywell ME360, HE360B or Clenair Ultra Upgrade Humidifier Panel model CA35UP. These are all hybrid pads made out of materials (usually paper fiber) that retain more moisture available for evaporation compared to the standard A-35 water panel where water quickly drips off. Another mitigation to this problem is to adjust the valve on the hot water intake line so that surplus water flowing through the unit is minimized. My professional installer could not get the drain line to go into the plumbing drain, so the drain water goes into the Air Conditioner condensation drain line. He told me there's a risk with that type of installation that the drain water line can freeze or create ice buildup outside the house at the drain point. It's preferable if the drain can go to existing plumbing drain rather than AC line, which could freeze if used in winter, but this may not always be convenient with your building layout. Also I recommend not depending on the filter change reminder light on the control panel since it's just a dumb timer. The length of replacement time will depend greatly on actual mineral buildup, i.e. how hard your water is, how often the unit runs, and how much water passes through it.

I seem to remember the original instructions were to clean the filter regularly. I don't have a problem with mold or slime buildup, but see they have a product for that.

I have very hard water and so quickly get a buildup of minerals left over as the water evaporates. To remove that, I simply pour some vinegar onto the filter from the top, while it's still in the machine. As the crust starts to soften (the vinegar dissolves the crust) I pour the liquid in the bottom of the machine into the sink, lay the filter down (it will now flatten without breaking) pour some more vinegar on it (probably 2 cups, total) and let it soak until it stops bubbling. Rinse good with water and it's ready to go again. I've used the same filter for several years. It is now finally disintegrating so I'm buying a new one.

This machine is for the bedroom. I also have a much larger one, different make, same type filter, large-room size, and use the same procedure for it.

I purchase these every year for my Vicks humidifier. I have spent way beyond what the machine itself cost me on filters. Each filter lasts about a month to 6 weeks before getting moldy and stops wicking the water. I only use the humidifier for about 4 months in the Winter, which a 3 pack of filters is good for. I would use it all year if I did not have to keep replacing the filters. If someone knows a better choice of longer lasting filters, please post.

12/9/08-Too bad this is the only place I have easily found these. I cannot believe they have gone up $10 in cost since I purchased them a year ago (11/30/07)!

I run my Vics V3100 on high every night and the filter lasts just under two months for me (the box states: "The Cool Mist Wicking Filter should be replaced about every two months, depending on use and local water hardness.") If the humidifier tank runs out of water while running, the filter will dry up completely until you add more water I've found that this practice reduces the life of the filter.

Note: One point of confusion is how Amazon lists this item (as of 1/24/10). The title reads: "2 Filters (Pack of 3)" actually, each box only contains 1 filter. The packaging is confusing as there's a big 2 on the top right of the box. However, if you look at the lower right corner of the box, in much smaller print you see "Contains 1 filter." So, in summary, you are ordering a total of 3 filters (1 Filter/box, Pack of 3 boxes).

I've used a humidifier that requires these for the past three winters, and really am not happy with the entire situation. These last only a month or slightly longer before needing to be replaced, so they simply are way overpriced for what they provide.

It feels like I'm getting suckered by a racket. Just out of principal, I'd much rather buy a humidifier that's higher performing and spend the extra money there rather than having to deal with ordering two packs of these per winter. They're bulky to store and it's just a hassle.

I have ordered many Oxyfree adsorbers and this (it was a huge order) was my first experience with Oxysorb. One package came without a status indicator, I trusted it anyway. They did not function as my others, and were unable to create a small vaccum inside of small canning jars, even when I used two. Another package arriving shortly later (300cc) without any status indicator. My 2000cc adsorbers were unable to "finish off" the vaccum in my 5 gallon bucket of rice, and two in combo were unable to do it in a 5 gallon bucket of beans. The thing with adsorbers is that they must be packaged and handled right to be of high quality when they arrive at your home. A simple visual inspection won't work and it is often hard to identify a failure if you also used a foodsaver type of product. Do not trust your long term food investment to this product unless you know your stuff and can check for function. I recommend Oxyfree brand from known seller instead of this product.

These are the perfect size to absorb oxygen out of the mason jars we have to keep our dehydrated food dry. These will be used for short and long-term food storage. Put these oxygen absorber inside mylar bags to protect the dried food from spoilage. Great little product.

This was my first purchase of oxygen absorber and unfortunately I didn't educate myself enough prior to purchasing. I wish they would've provided some guide for how many are needed for certain volume containers. In addition, I wish they were individually sealed. As they come, once you open the bag they ALL begin to absorb oxygen. You can re-seal the bag or place them in a Ziploc buy their productivity is greatly reduced every time you do that. My future purchases will be in smaller quantities with larger capacity absorbers.

They do seem to help with collection of minerals from the water you use. But, you still have to pay attention to the scale build up on the heating element. Do not let it build up, as it is really hard to remove it. Use white vinegar as least once a week to clean or soak the heating surface.

I also found that as it comes with two pads together; that was blocking the water from flowing into the heating area, so I just separated them and use one pad at a time.

I used to go through a box of these every 2 months. If you soak the pads in vinegar over night, you can reuse the pads instead of throwing them out.

Great Product! If you do not have a home water softener, or the desire to buy distilled water at 2 gallons per day, you NEED these Mineral Absorption pads. I've run my unit 24/7 with the exception of cleaning and refilling all winter. With the pads, the cleaning is easy, very little mineral deposit inside the base. With an old pad or without one at all, what a mess thick crusty hard water deposits built up everywhere inside the base!

However, I do think somewhere in the information about this product it should be said that these are the 3 1/4" pads.

Bought the pads a month ago and just for S&Gs (shiz and grins), I decided to take a look at the pads today just 1 month later. The tank water looks clean so I guessed the pads were not needed. Duh! Holly ships!!! The pad accummulated more minerals from my tap water than I thought possible. The tank water looked clean. I won't pre-soak in vinigar until I know what will happen to the minerals that I now know are in the water.

P.S. I use the pads in a new Vicks/Kaz 2-tank Model V790 Germ-Free Humidifier for Medium/Large Room Size. It provides pure, sanitized warm mist to the environment.

P.P.S. These pads are NOT filters! They are meant to absorb minerals from the water and they do that VERY WELL.

Bulb needs replacement after @ 2000 hours of use. The bulb needs to be the one designed for the Slant/Fin humidifier, not any old UV bulb. It has a small bead of metal (? mercury) in the bulb that acts as an activator. Once replaced, the small yellow light goes out on the humidifier indicating that it is working. So far, it is working well. The problem is finding it on the internet. Prices range from $13.00 to $24.00

I have owned two of these dehumidifiers, and both failed in less than 18 months due to leakage of the refrigerant. In both cases, the refrigerant loss was due to excessive corrosion of the evaporator coil. (Who would have thought a dehumidifier would be exposed to moisture?)

Haier warranty support was not able to address the issue in any way. In my professional opinion, this humidifier was not designed to last more than two years. I will not buy another Haier product.

My Haier dehumidifier was a problem from the start. The energy saving function worked too well: the device refused to run for more than about 1 minute. Despite the high moisture levels in our basement (despite growing mold on the furniture!), our dehumidifier refused to run properly. Haier devices have created a huge problem for my wife and I. I would not recommend them to anyone. Their customer service department has also been disappointing to work with. Overall, I would recommend going with a different dehumidifier--any company but Haier!

This is the closest model to an oler model that we could find by the same maker. It is a bit noisy, but the water resevoir is big. Most models are much smaller and therefore have to be emptied more often.
