This is an okay product, it works. It does put out alot more steam than other humidifiers I have bought. You can use a little salt in the water to help the machine work. Kids could potentialy get burned if they touch the steam, so keep them away.

My biggest gripe about this product is the design. The hole to pour out the water is under the blue circular part (see photo) Since it's in the middle of the water reservoir, it's difficult to empty the leftover water from the base. If you are using it a few days in a row, you end up with black soot, or mold in the base, and again, very difficult to clean it out.

I purchased this humidifier for a library, which is primarily dark woods and the white 821-000 model which is a very good unit stood out like a sore thumb. Fortunately, both units take the #1043 replacement wick. The pictures I saw of the product depict a rather rich looking appearance, but in the flesh its not so impressive. The fill level is somewhat confusing. Its a 1" plate saying max fill. Fill to the bottom/middle/top of the plate? Nothing in the manual on the subject. Filling it is a pain with a little door that makes pouring in water a precision operation to avoid spills. In addition, I needed a flashlight to see the water level to prevent overfilling. I have 2 of the 821-000 models and they are much easier to use. They should make a dark colored version of it where white is not a good option. I have also found that filling the units with filtered water greatly extends filter life and efficiency. Otherwise, if the water used has a high mineral content it will turn the filter into a cinder block in short order.

It is plastic, but it looks good, and is much better looking than competitive models. It is also very quiet on the 1 setting, and puts out a lot of moisture and the 9 setting, and can be set anywhere in between.

the major drawback is that there is no way to tell how much water is in the reservoir. The unit holds 3.5 gallons, so when it is empty, I add 3 gallons. I have to wait until it is empty to fill it (which can happen anytime) when I am not around, there is no easy way to top it off in the evening.

Reading the reviews of this product, I was hesitant to purchase it, but comparing the other humidifiers on this site, I couldn't find one that was any better. That being said, I was afraid to buy it on line in case it needed to be returned so I purchased it locally. A couple of comments regarding it performance:

Noise: Sounds like a pedestal fan, or box fan, really not that big of a deal for us. After a couple hours you forget that its actualy there. There are about 10 fan levels, you realy don't need that many, but it is nice to turn it down, if your listening to a movie, and then pump it up when you need the extra moisture.

Filling the tank: The one feature I really like is that you just pop open a small door, and using a pitcher, fill it up, it holds 3 gallons. With our wood stove running non stop, and the humidifier set on medium to high fan level, we go through about 3 gallons every 24 hours, and it keeps the main living floor at 45 to 50 percent humidity.

The unit keeps our 1700 sqft, 2 story house comfortable, we keep it by the stairs, so that the natural draft distributes the mositur evenly.

One complaint, I wish it had a water level window, you don't know its full untill water is running on the floor, so we just put a gallon in it in the morning, and one at night, or just wait till it runs out completly.

The remote control is usefull, but not nessecary. It is nice to see the humidity is on the other side of the room, not just right at the machine.

The tile top is extremely fragile, be carefull.

The plastic consol is just that plastic, not bad, but not great, though since it is a pedestal, it is not very obtrusive.

We;ve been running it for 2 months now on well water and np problems, the wick still works and it does a good job. The concept is simple, a fan blowing across a large wick, like an auto air filter. Its not flashy, but it does it job.

This unit looks nice and that is where the value ends. The door in the front pulls down for you to fill the unit, unfortunetly there is no gauge as to how much water is needed. Fill it to high and the unit overflows, and stops working. The only way to determine how much water is needed is to take teh full lid off. In addittion witht he way the fill door is set, there is a high probablility the water will spill out as you lift the fill container (one you use) higher. Looks nice and that is it.

Now the unit I do recomend for one from the same company that is easy to fill and runs for a long time is the Essick Air 4D7 300 Whole-House Console-Style Evaporative Humidifier. I purchased both of them and this one is much easier to work with. It has two large fill tanks that last a long time (depending on how dry your place is) comes with a hose that mkaes it easy till fill, water is in sealed container as you move it from fill source to unit. Bigger and not as nice looking at the EP9500 but a better choice.

This humidifier is a good size if you're looking for a whole house humidifier with a small footprint. It appears to have a woodgrain look in the photos, but it doesn't. It's just brown plastic...really cheap looking brown plastic. Having said that, it is slightly more attractive than the gray plastic humidifiers and does blend in a little better than one of those. The granite tile for the top is an actual (relatively thick) granite tile, which was surprising to me. Honestly, I think it makes the plastic look even cheaper by comparison though. I do give them props for putting it on rolling casters. It's really easy to shove into a closet if you're having company and don't want to look at an ugly appliance.

I've only had this for about a week now, but it seems to do the job fairly well. The air doesn't seem quite as chilly since I've been humidifying it; which is why I wanted a large humidifier. You can set the desired humidity and the system will turn itself on and off to maintain that. You can also adjust the fan speed at 9 levels. It is fairly loud even at the lowest speed, but not overly distracting.

EDIT 1-21-2012: The humidity sensor on this thing is useless. Sometimes it will come on for about 10 seconds, then shut off and do that continually. It loses a star for that as this feature doesn't seem to work correctly. I just turn it all the way up when I want to humidify and off when I don't.

Others have commented on the fill door being useless and I have to agree. You can use it, but unless you take the top piece off, there is absolutely no way of knowing how full the tank is. I find it easier to just open it up to fill it rather than guess and risk an overflow. The top piece pulls right off, so this isn't much of a hardship.

I keep my reviews up to date and will share additional comments, good or bad, if my experience with this appliance changes.

I bought this at Kmart for $21. They had extra filters there, and they're available online. The unit is in my 2-year-old's room and is very quiet. You do have to snap the lid on tightly, but then it stays in place. It used only about 1/4 of the water in the chamber overnight. The instructions recommend a thorough cleaning with vinegar once a week, which I will definitely do. A switch on the body of the humidifier would be nice (there's a dial-type power switch on the cord). I'm sure a $100+ unit would be more attractive and have more features, but for my needs this works fine.

We've had this humidifier for about 2 years now and use it only occasionally. The reason we use it sparingly is because it is way too loud. It has a very annoying vibrational noise that can be damped by pushing down hard on the lid. Since I can't stand next to it pushing the lid down all night, we have to put up with the amazingly loud humming. The other problem with this humidifier is that it is hard to clean inside the tube that draws-up the water. It is removable, but you need to have pipe-cleaners to get inside it. The non-removable disc in the lid is also filled with gunk that I can't get out. Save your money!

This humidifier is loud, but more importantly completely drenches the carpet beneath it. Every night I have to put 2 dry bath towels under it to collect the water that would otherwise be saoked into my carpet. Its SUCH A PAIN, not to mention the constant rotations of new dry towels. I guess you get what you pay for, I am going to get a more expensive one next but sure wish I could have saved this $30 from the beginning.

Reading the other reviews, you'd think you were making the biggest mistake of your life buying this great little machine. It's not loud at all I don't know what they're talking about. And it blows a giant stream of cool mist that has helped our newborn breathe freely in the humidity-free Arizona air. Only thing is, and I don't know why, it takes about 3 initial runs before full mist capacity is met. Instructions even forewarn this it has to get broken in somehow. Well, once you've done that, it's awesome, honestly. Just keep it clean.

If you do get this humidifier, make sure you buy a ton of filters, because once they are gone, you will probably not be able to find new ones!

as others have pointed out, this filter is absolutely horrible. the hamilton beach (blue) filter lasted easily 4 months with proper care (i have been using this humidifier model for 10 years), and its structural integrity was not the reason i finally had to replace. the "new" graco filter starts falling apart big-time as soon as it first gets wet. do not buy. i notice that hamilton beach still sells the filter this "replaces," and am going to see if it is the original design. shame shame graco.

I cleaned the unit (Graco 4-gallon cool mist) every day and filled it with water run through a very good quality countertop filter. Even doing this, I went through two of these $11 filters per WEEK (TWENTY-FOUR TIMES as many filters as stated by the manufacturer!), and simply couldn't afford to spend nearly $90 a month (just in filters!) to run a humidifier. That is, putting it simply, absolutely insane. Design is faulty -filtered water shouldn't trash a brand-new filter in less than four days. I don't know anyone who could afford $90 a month for humidifier filters.

Not sure what's going on with particular brand of replacement filter... I run my Graco Humidifier about 9hrs at a time and the level of water consumed from the tank is not noticeable I'm talking day 1 out of the box. With the other filters I have used (not the one I am reviewing), I would easily go through almost an entire tank. I won't be buying this brand again.

Graco should be ashamed for selling this product as it is now! The filter works ok with the humidifier that it is designed for, but they have chosen to make it CHEAPER in order to increase their profit. The quality of the filter they now produce is totally inferior to the one with the blue layer. It is now all white and the outer webbing is disintegrating while wet. This obviously means that I will have to replace the filter more often. I use filtered rainwater in the humidifier as my well water is very hard and in my opinion should not be used in any humidifier. Overall, the Graco humidifier works very well but this new filter is basically worthless!

The product that arrived is not the one advertised. Some other company is making replacements and marketing them as if they are original manufacturer. Oh, the box looks all official, with the OEM's name plastered all over the place but it's not made by Essick. Amazon better get a handle on their associates misrepresenting their products.

It may be the product is sufficient and serviceable, but I dislike being lied to.

The product being sold is not as advertised. This web page states the filter is made by Essick Air but the company ships a substitute made by BestAir. If you want the real deal, look elsewhere.

For 3-4 months these units work great.

BUT THEN even with extremely careful use in a climate controlled, unfinished basement...

I owned THREE of the previous model with the exact same features and specifications (except the Energy Efficiency Rating was a bit higher on the previous model) and FOUR of this model.

On the three previous models one FAILED in two months, and the remaining two FAILED within 9 months. Apparently, there is a MAJOR PROBLEM with the design, parts, and/or assembly that allows the refrigerant to slowly leak from the system. Thus, after a few months (typically) the coils start to slowly frost over lightly when the compressor activates, decreasing moisture removal. Quickly, the problem worsens. Soon, the unit is CONSTANTLY frosting over, defrosting itself, frosting over, defrosting, etc when activated by the humidistat.

On the four of the current model... One was Dead On Arrival. One, the compressor would never engage (even when set on Continuous). And, the remaining two began the constant cycling between frosting over and defrosting after only 4 or 5 months of use.

In addition, on these two units the metal framing that holds the coils rusted EXTREMELY QUICKLY to the point that the water receptacle is now discolored bright red-orange AND chunks of rusted metal appear in collection bucket daily AND small rust flakes are expelled with the air from the top of the unit.

Definitely NOT what one would expect from a dehumidifier that costs between $150.00-$200.00 PER UNIT.

Saw some bad reviews on the model and wanted to put in my 2 cents. I bought one of these to replace one that was in the basement when we bought our house. For 3 years its been running almost non-stop (does turn off at set humidity level in winter but spring to fall is constant). When the second one in the basement that came with the house dies I got an LG on sale at Home Depot and its dead after less than 2 years. Looking to get another GE to replace that piece of crap LG.

We purchased this dehumidifier after reading a recommendation from the Consumer Reports website (our faith in Consumer Reports went down after our experience with this product). We initially were happy with our purchase; however, after 7 months the device stopped working:

A) the built-in hygrometer appeared to malfunction and the device stopped removing moisture from the air (unless we set it to remove moisture continuously, which is an option on the device)

B) after using the device in "continuous" mode for 1 week, ice crystals began forming on the front of the device we turned it off and called GE.

Their solution was to ship us a "good will certificate" for the purchase of another GE dehumidifier (the certificate is worth a maximum of $250). We're in the process of ordering a new one.

The device operated in a climate controlled section of our home. We also own a Delonghi DD50P Dehumidifier purchased at the same time: The Delonghi operates in our garage which is not climate controlled and is still functioning well.

While GE support was kind/responsive, this GE product was unreliable/appears to be poorly engineered and/or manufactured.

It seems to work fine in my basement. I was confused at first because it seemed that the fan ran constantly while the compressor cycled on and off based on the humidity setting, but then I discovered that the fan runs for just a few minutes after the compressor turns off. Wish the manual mentioned that behavior. So now my only complaint is that something is rattling in the water reservoir and I haven't figured out what it is so am just living with it. Not a huge deal, just a slight annoyance since i'm not in the basement that often. Rating = 4 stars.

6/1/13 update: I only use the unit in the summer when the humidity level in the basement gets too high. When I turned it on this year (season 3) the fan blew but the compressor never turned on. I took it to be repaired and was told the compressor was leaky and not repairable. It only had a one year warranty, so I'm out of luck. Plan to buy a Frigidaire replacement, but I suspect all the newer units are not built to last like my old bullet-proof Wards unit (it was running fine after 20+ years but was a little short on capacity and I thought a newer one would be more efficient, so replaced it). Reduced the rating to one star.

I received this humidor today. The size is perfect, made spanish cedar, and it comes with a round humidification disc, but it does not have the magnetic clasps as advertised. I don't think that the lack of the clasps will be a problem because I do not intend to travel with it. I would have given the humidor 5 stars if it had come as was described.

Edit: I was mistaken when I originally posted this review. The humidor does have magnetic clasps. They are so well hidden in the wood that they can not be seen. They can be detected by placing a piece of metal next to the rim; they are strong magnets indeed.

This is a nice little cigar box. I generally use it to only store a few cigars at a time. It seems to keep them at a good humidity level, even in dry phoenix! the seal seems pretty good, though I'm far from an aficionado. I'm still using the packaged humidifier, though I suspect I'll have to swap it out eventually for something better.

All in all, I'm happy with this. Can't beat the price and the construction seems pretty good quality.
