Before we got this humidifier, we had two smaller humidifiers placed around the house and despite having to refill them constantly, we were still getting static electric shocks when touching door knobs and light switches (scary). I wanted a humidifier that held a lot of water, was reliable, didn't coat everything with a white dust, and simply worked to help alleviate dry winter skin and static electricity issues. So far, this humidifier has been working perfectly to mitigate the dry winter air in an area just over 1000 sq ft.

When I first took it out of the box, the construction quality seemed a bit flimsy and I was kinda worried. Yeah, the plastic and seams could be a little tougher feeling, but once you have the few different sections into place, I would say the overall build quality is as solid as it needs to be. Our model is also more of a pure white color, rather than the cream "old PC case" color shown on Amazon. After about 3 months of constant use, we haven't had any leaks or a single issue to worry about.

Pros:

-Holds 3.9 real gallons (not just the misleading daily output figure that manufacturers use). It's great that I don't have to refill this thing every 2 days. A whole week or more will go by before we have to refill it. Of course, the refill period will depend on your settings and how often its running. We've left it running all the time (automatic setting) set to maintain 45 or 50 (somewhat high), and still only need to refill about once every 8-12 days.

-Has casters for easy relocation of unit

-Super simple operation. One button to power on/off, one button to set which humidity level you want to maintain, and one button to set to automatic or manual operation levels.

-As far as humidifiers go, the styling is good in that it sorta just blends into our similarly colored wall. Fairly subtle presence for a larger unit.

-Pretty quiet. It has a fan, so yeah, you will hear it when its spinning faster, but the noise is like a white noise, which we don't mind hearing when we sleep. Never noticed it to be a problem when trying to talk or watch TV.

-Up to 2500 sq ft. coverage area. We can only attest to just under half of that.

-None of that fine white dust like you get from those "cool mist" humidifiers.

-Display shows "F" on our unit when it's time to refill.

Cons:

-None!

Be sure to add a few capfuls of bacteriostat solution to the tank and you're good to go with this humidifier.

Pros: Highly effective, I didn't measure it but I would certainly believe than it can move 12 gallons a day. Easy to refill, Wicks are inexpensive.

Cons: Noisy, poor quality, creates a draft of cold air.

This product comes from Essick Air, and it is cheaply constructed (judging from other reviews, such is the quality standard of all their products). This item must have a huge profit margin because it is little more than some flimsy plastic parts which don't fit together very well, plus an electric fan. Everyone seems to have different quality issues; on my unit, the float sensor is nonfunctional (either always on or always off, depending on how you adjust it). The hydrostat seems to be calibrated way off -it reads about 10-15% lower than my (calibration verified) Caliber III Thermometer Hygrometer -but still works, as long as you set it high enough.

But the main problem with this humidifier is the noise. On low it is loud enough to hear from 25 feet away. On medium it is hard to have a conversation. On high it drowns out most other noise. My girlfriend had to turn up the TV over it even when on low. On top of the fan noise, the propeller seems to be not quite balanced, so that the whole thing vibrates, and even rattles if oriented wrong.

Unfortunately for us consumers (but fortunately for Essick Air), there seems to be a few options for in-house humidifiers on the market with more than a few gallons a day of output. So if you really need all 12 gallons/day, and can't get one integrated with your heating system, this might be the best product on the market, despite all its shortcomings.

Bought this unit to replace 2 smaller units on my house's main floor. Depending on your personal takeaway, some of the build on unit may seem flimsy. However, this isn't something you're gonna be pulling or pushing on a daily basis. I really do like a couple of features on it: Being able to lock the controls is great especially when you have kids and want to place unit on the floor. Also, the Dry Out Mode will come in handy should you forget to fill it up. After one week the unit seems efficient and really accurate. My one word of advice would be to make sure you line up the reservoir's float properly when assembling unit. Failure to do so will trick the unit into thinking that it's empty, sending it into Dry Out Mode. I know because it happened to me. Perhaps the manufacturer can address this in the future. Overall, a very good humidifier.

Honest reviews on Essick Air MA1201 Whole-House Humidifier, White

We have hard water, and this lasted about 2 weeks before we got rid of it to someone without hard water. We had issues because the wick filter just sat in the water, soaking it up from the bottom. My hard water affected the filter very quickly (within only 2 weeks) to the point where it was no longer wicking up water, the filter was hard, and the humidifier was running constantly trying to put out what it could manage, and it started to smell bad. Again, all of this was within only 2 weeks, and the filters are expensive ($13 on Amazon right now and $>15 at local stores, and there was no way I could justify spending that every 2 weeks for new filters).

We ordered the Lasko 1128 from Amazon because, in contrast to this Essick, water flows at the top and bottom of the filter, helping to extend the life of the filter. As opposed to less than 2 weeks before, the filter with the Lasko lasted over a month, without any smell, and you can get the filters for the Lasko very cheap (we got them direct from Lasko on their website at $5 and some cents per filter including shipping...the more you buy from them at the same time, the lower the cost per filter).

So, even though the Essick lasted 2 weeks for us before giving away, I still give it 2 stars because I liked how you could set the humidity level and let it go, and I liked how the tank filled (no mess).

I have tried cool-mist, warm-mist and now the Essick MA1201 (moist-air evaporative) humidifiers.

Cool-mist is quiet and effectively humidifies, but creates really annoying white dust and requires frequent fillings

Warm-mist is also quiet and effective, no white dust, but requires frequent fillings and a weekly clean up of deposits created by the boiler plate a plate that burns a fair amount of electricity. I had a Honeywell warm-mist unit for 5 years before it failed, so this isn't a bad solution if the cons I mention aren't a problem.

I replaced the Honeywell with the Essick. The MA1201 has an evaporative filter that absorbs water. Air is drawn through the filter by a fan and evaporation humidifies. This unit is large and will handle up to 1,500 sq. ft. with at most 1 daily filling (holds combined 4 gallons in base and tank). An evaporative humidifier is noisier than the other two types due to the fan. At low setting (Essick calls it "Ultra Quiet") there is still a background white noise But, since this unit has the capacity for multiple rooms, I put it in a room near the furnace return vent and away from sleeping rooms and it works very well (holds 6 rooms at 35%), with no noise to interrupt sleep. The unit construction seems good none of the problems mentioned by others yes it is plastic, but it moves a lot of water and metal would not make sense. The 2 gallon refill tank is particularly well designed and easy to refill in a kitchen sink. Made in U.S.A.

After years of finding humidifier solutions, I found the Essick MA1201 to be the best for my needs.

I have been using this item for two days and it works. It doesn't produce a lot of steam and you will probably have to add salt to the water to have it steam but I can definitely tell the difference.

I've been using this product fr six years, my 7 year old no longer needs it but now my 5 year old does. It's amazing I'm serious. My daughter gets coughs that get bad at night and we turn this on and she can sleep through the night. There's been only two times that her coughs have been so bad that it doesn't help at all, this is like 2 coughs out of twenty+ in her lifetime. What we dread are the moments when the refill juice runs out. Uggggh. Regardless this product has saved my sleep for 6/7 years. Once it breaks I'm buying another one. If your steamer is not creating vapor you need to add more salt. Trust me it produces good smoke-like steam.

This little gadget I call MY LOVE. It works really well. Just make sure you follow the instructions well. This item needs up to 2 pinches of salt to produce a good amount of steam. Don't over do the salt. Then it will start spitting water out the front. Not enough salt makes little or no steam. It makes a slupping sound. Thats normal. Kind of like a coffee maker running. Its a relaxing sound I can fall asleep fast and breathe easy to at night. And get a goodnights sleep. When the water gets to low it automatically shutsoff. Thats normal too. I can sure tell the difference since it bought mine. I GOT A GOOD DEAL HERE WITH THIS PRODUCT. I LOVE IT.

It doesn't make a lot of steam and for something named "Warm STEAM" that's not so good. It does a somewhat adequate job, but I'm not particularly impressed.

I seem to remember the original instructions were to clean the filter regularly. I don't have a problem with mold or slime buildup, but see they have a product for that.

I have very hard water and so quickly get a buildup of minerals left over as the water evaporates. To remove that, I simply pour some vinegar onto the filter from the top, while it's still in the machine. As the crust starts to soften (the vinegar dissolves the crust) I pour the liquid in the bottom of the machine into the sink, lay the filter down (it will now flatten without breaking) pour some more vinegar on it (probably 2 cups, total) and let it soak until it stops bubbling. Rinse good with water and it's ready to go again. I've used the same filter for several years. It is now finally disintegrating so I'm buying a new one.

This machine is for the bedroom. I also have a much larger one, different make, same type filter, large-room size, and use the same procedure for it.

I purchase these every year for my Vicks humidifier. I have spent way beyond what the machine itself cost me on filters. Each filter lasts about a month to 6 weeks before getting moldy and stops wicking the water. I only use the humidifier for about 4 months in the Winter, which a 3 pack of filters is good for. I would use it all year if I did not have to keep replacing the filters. If someone knows a better choice of longer lasting filters, please post.

12/9/08-Too bad this is the only place I have easily found these. I cannot believe they have gone up $10 in cost since I purchased them a year ago (11/30/07)!

They fit and work as expected. Just like any other humidifier filter, they need replacing after dirt and minerals build up. These filters work just like to filter that came with the original unit.

Honest reviews on Protec WF2 Extended Life Replacement Humidifier Filter(Pack of 3)

This replacement filter does just the trick. I run my Vics V3100 on high every night and the filter lasts just under two months for me (the box states: "The Cool Mist Wicking Filter should be replaced about every two months, depending on use and local water hardness.") If the humidifier tank runs out of water while running, the filter will dry up completely until you add more water I've found that this practice reduces the life of the filter.

Note: One point of confusion is how Amazon lists this item (as of 1/24/10). The title reads: "2 Filters (Pack of 3)" actually, each box only contains 1 filter. The packaging is confusing as there's a big 2 on the top right of the box. However, if you look at the lower right corner of the box, in much smaller print you see "Contains 1 filter." So, in summary, you are ordering a total of 3 filters (1 Filter/box, Pack of 3 boxes).

I've used a humidifier that requires these for the past three winters, and really am not happy with the entire situation. These last only a month or slightly longer before needing to be replaced, so they simply are way overpriced for what they provide.

It feels like I'm getting suckered by a racket. Just out of principal, I'd much rather buy a humidifier that's higher performing and spend the extra money there rather than having to deal with ordering two packs of these per winter. They're bulky to store and it's just a hassle.

Cheap 8GAL HUMIDIFIER (Essick Air Products MA0800)

8GAL HUMIDIFIER
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

I have this exact same model under the name Emerson MoistAIR with a model number of MA08000 that we got from Lowe's about three months ago. It holds one gallon of water and does a great job in our open floor plan, about 500 + square feet or so minus one room down a hall I haven't monitored. It displays the humidity level and kicks on when needed. The unit is very quiet to the point that I don't even notice it when I am reading.

The colder it gets, the more the heater runs, the more I fill it, but it isn't using up the water at a rate that is bothersome or wasteful. The only thing bad I have to say is it's big and not the nicest looking thing in a small living space, but we only need it in the winter so I can live with it. If you have the room to hide it in a corner it's a solid mid size humidifier.

My wife was having bad sinus problems and her MD recommended getting a humidifier. We purchased this one at Lowe's and have now had it for 4-5 years. Within about a month after purchasing this and placing it near our return air vent, as recommended, in our 1500 sq. ft home, my wife's sinus problems were resolved. I actually can't believe how much better I can breathe in the mornings when I wake up with this thing running vs. when it's not running. We now live in a 1800 sq. ft. home and it still serves our purposes well. It goes through about 1 tankfull of water per day during the cold days when the heat is running. I just fill it before bed each night. It is very quiet. We keep it in our bedroom beside the return air vent (right beside the bed)on the low setting and most of the time don't even realize it's running. I also purchase Holmes Bacteriostat and add about an ounce each time I fill the unit, which keeps the unit clean and never allows any bacterial growth (which ruins your filter). I only have to purchase about 1 filter and 1 bottle of bacteriostat per year. I recommend this item regularly to friends, family, and my own patients.

I know there is a bad review out there on it as well as some other good ones but this has been one of the best investments I have ever made! For your health...for your family's health...Get one!

We have the EssickAir Moist Air MA 1201. However, the pic looks the same as this one. This is the 3rd year we have had it.

Pros:

It keeps the humidity up really well in our 1200 square foot home, especially if it is placed near the return air vent.

With the humidity up, we notice less nose bleeds, dry skin, sinus problems, and bronchial problems in the winter, which we had noticed before.

It has different humidity settings and different noise levels. The quietest setting is barely noticeable, and sounds like a soothing "white noise."

Cons:

It is HUGE. I'm glad we only need it out during the winter months, because it takes up a lot of space, IMO.

The pad, especially this year (our 3rd year) keeps getting moldy! My husband is Type A, Obsessive Compulsive about keeping this maintained, as he is in the Heating & Air industry and is both knowledgeable and mindful of humidifiers. He cleans it thoroughly, per directions, before the first use, and puts a new pad in it. Usually we start running it in late October. It is December now and we have bought THREE pads already this year. One pad should last at least for the few months we use it each year.

Honest reviews on 8GAL HUMIDIFIER (Essick Air Products MA0800)

I live in a small one bedroom house, less than 1000 sq ft. I burn wood only for heat so my house gets very dry. In the past I have always purchased and used two smaller humidifiers and it didn't do what I expected and I spent a fortune on filters. This year I went with a bigger model, I figured with the wood stove I needed something that put out more humidity. I love this humidifier. The tank holds a gallon, and the reservoir in the bottom holds a gallon. So it holds a little over two gallons all together. I run mine on high, with the wood stove it is necessary. But, this unit does put out eight gallons in a 24 hour period. It does mean that I have to fill it four times a day, but I am happy to do it. I suffered terribly with sinus problems, dry eyes and a dry throat every winter. Now when I wake up, I feel good. No more red eyes, sore throat, or runny nose. Its all gone. I am sleeping better and my son even noticed that the air was better when he came to visit.

It displays the humidity level and shuts off if it runs out of water. It's a good reminder if I forget to fill it because it won't run dry. It is easy to clean and I have had no mold problems at all. I do use the water treatment that is recommended for this model. I would recommend this humidifier to anyone. If you need to have eight gallons a day of output, it's there. If you need less, use a lower speed. Its great because you can read the humidity level and set the speed accordingly. I sleep better, and I feel much better. It does everything promised. It is not loud, it does not leak or any of those problems I have had in the past. It is easy to fill also. And it is so easy to clean.

Also, its important that you use Essick replacement filters. I ordered the filters that were on the page with the humidifier. They are the wrong filters and poorly constructed. Amazon sells the correct filters, Essick filter part number MAF2. Be sure to order the correct filters. Don't waste your money on imitations. And order the correct number, MAF2 is the replacement filter number.

We decided to buy this humidifier with the hopes that it would humidify the entire second floor of our 1700sf, 2 1/2 story colonial. I do believe it is doing a good job. I must say that after one night I do feel relief from the dryness. I use cpap and would wake up all night long because of mouth dryness. Even though my cpap machine has its own humidifier there was no humidification reaching me because the air was so dry coming into the machine. Using this multi-room humidifier has absolutely reduced the dryness in our home and I noticed a difference in my cpap therapy. Air in the house is definitely more comfortable.

The unit is quite quiet. The fill tank is fairly easy to fill, although it was too tall to fill in the bathroom sink. Internally it is very accessible when you lift the fill tank and main assembly from the base. This is something which I wanted as I didn't want the operation of the unit to be a mystery (is there mold or algae building up inside)? You can clearly see all parts of this humidifier and clean it easily when necessary. Filter/wick is very easy to replace and is inexpensive.

This heater is useless. We had it for 2 days and thankfully were able to return it. My 600W power supply on my computer gives off more heat than this. I know the heater is only a 100W heater. It does not significantly warm the air past about 4 to 6 inches from the device. I could be a reasonable foot warmer, but then again why pay this much for a foot warmer? It does get hot in the center, but the edges are cool to the touch. Which shows you just how little heat it is actually producing. The concept was good. The implementation and actual heat produced were unacceptable.

We went through several humidifiers in such a short time before finding this one. This is a durable machine and has worked well for us for almost 2 years (we use it EVERY night). But the "noise" is my favorite part because it doubles as a white noise for my sleeping son!! The sound helps him stay asleep and blocks out noises during nap time!!!

This filter seems to have the same quality as the filters I had been buying from local HVAC dealers, but at almost half the price! Would definitely buy this again!

Filter seemed slightly longer than necessary and the mineral filter material on the ends of the plastic frame it sits in causes the ends of the filter to bunch up on the air intake side. While the combs separate the filter on the other side, it bunches up on the air intake side. I think the combs should be on the intake side to optimize air flow across the filter media, but I didn't design the filter. (The plastic frame can be reversed in the filter box but then the removal handle is not accessible to remove the plastic frame due to the metal guides which fit into groves in the plastic frame).
