I got a good chuckle out of reading some of the negative reviews on this unit. I own an industrial water treatment contracting company and it always strikes me as funny how uneducated people are with water, something they use every day. I figured I would take a minute and clarify a couple of things for people that use or are planning on purchasing one of these humidifiers, (Oh and yes I actually own one)

Humidifiers have been a part of our family for around fifteen years after I read a study on how they can reduce the usual winter ailments, colds and flu's.

First how these units work.

If you take the humidifying unit apart, you will find two probes. I believe they make them out of Carbon and other materials. They are round and about ½" thick, and approximately four inches long. These probes are then connected the electrical cord. When you plug it in and the probes are immersed in water, they create an electrical current between the two probes. This creates water that boils, and thus creates steam.

Some key facts about water. Pure water will not conduct an electrical current. This is why the instructions recommend adding a pinch of salt if your unit does not produce steam. The salt when disolved increases the TDS, (more on that in a minute) thus creating a conductive in the water.

Water is considered the Universal Solvent. In other word's water pretty much will absorb and dissolve anything that we submerge or add to it. Sometimes instantly. Sometimes over time. Two key things are in water that effect these humidifiers. One is the hardness of the water. Hardness is measured by checking how much Calcium and Magnesium is in the water. The other effect is Totally Dissolved Solids, or TDS. (all the other minerals that actually dissolve into water)

When you boil water, (essentially what these units do), the vapor that they produce is considered pure water or close too pure. So in essence as the water vapor escapes the unit what is left behind are the residual minerals, (tds) and the hardness, (magnesium and Calcium). Generally the Hardness cakes on the probes and creates a cement like residual. TDS usually fall out of suspension as clumps. Gray/black sand/rock formations.

So when you read comments in these reviews about residual inside the tank, or that the unit stopped producing steam, what these people are referring to is the residual left over after the water is boiled off. Depending on the water quality of their tap, the residual can be a lot or very little.

Ok, before you purchase one of these units, just remember. It's $15.00. (Wal Mart has them for a few bucks less) Your not buying an ultra fancy $200.00 BrookStone humidifier/vaporizier. These are generally one season, low maintenance, throw them away when you're done. (depending how many days out of the year you fire them up) So keep that in mind.

If you want to make one last, you can get some plain white vinegar. Find a jar or container that the Humidifying unit will fit into. That means something that the bottom portion that sets in the water not the top part where the cord goes in. (Edited this to better explain it) and fill it with 3/4 vinegar and the rest water, creating a mild acid solution. Set the probe portion in it and let it soak for a day. Repeat as necessary until the unit operates to your liking. Note the probes inside the unit do wear out, and hard water deposits do cake up pretty thick on the probes which increase that Wear and Tear effect. (I've taken enough of them apart to know)

Bottom line If you want a cheap way of creating warm humidified air these are the unit for you. Don't expect anything more then what they price them at, and if you don't plan on maintaining them, ie using vinegar to keep the probes semi-clean of hardness deposits, then expect no more then one to two years of use.

Very simple and easy to use. About the black particles that develop in the water after use, I found the following explanation to be helpful:

"A Vaporizer produces moisture by heating small amounts of the minerals in the water using tiny electrodes in the shaft of the unit. The minerals then heat the water to a boil and release steam into the air. The minerals will then settle to the bottom of the tank, possibly becoming small black flakes. These flakes are normal and should be rinsed out when you refill the tank. Any bacteria or mold in the water will be killed by the temperature of the water."

Best Deals for Vicks 1.5 Gallon Vaporizer with Night-Light

This is the best value for money can buy. It just requires a bit of patience when cleaning it. The more often you clean it, the faster the deposits dissolve.

Cleaning TIP: I took a bottle of water ( evian, aberfoyle ) and cut off the top part of the bottle leaving just enough so that the heating part can be fully immerged sort of making a container to hold the vinegar and salt. Pour the vinegar and a little bit of salt just enough so that the entire heating element is soaked. Leave it there for a few minutes and voila.

The steam is hot when in use, so be careful if you have kids around that would be the only drawback, but then again, that's why it is called a vapourizer vapours is supposd to be hot.

Honest reviews on Vicks 1.5 Gallon Vaporizer with Night-Light

After my daughter was born, we purchased this for her room. I'm surprised to read all the complaints about this humidifier, because it's a cheap, low maintanance item! I must admit, that after 5 years of use (used anytime the furnace is on) and with little or no cleaning, it's doing just fine! We have hard water and we do have a softener, so no salt is needed. As soon as we fill it up and plug it in, the thing starts boiling away, QUIETLY. The directions say it lasts 18-24 hours, but in reality, it doesn't with our water. The more minerals and salt in the water, the faster it boils out of the tank. No smells, no white residue, just easy to use and no parts to replace. In the morning, we take it to the sink, dump out the black specks of minerals (THIS IS NORMAL) and refill it for the next night.

I like the idea of the boiling water killing germs. We don't have any slime or gunk filling up the tank like our other evaporative humidifier. I love the cup on the top for medicine placement. I buy a huge bottle of essential oil of eucalyptus, and pour some in the cup when someone in the family is sick. Works like a charm!

When it's time to replace this one, I would not hesitate to buy another. It's a very basic humidifier that raises the humidity quickly. I would buy the largest model of this type. Considering the horrible reviews on the other models, it doesn't seem to be worth buying anything else. Even if something goes wrong with it, it really isn't that much of a problem considering the cost of the unit.

UPDATE: Shortly after I wrote the review, my unit stoppped working. It had a great run! Of course we replaced it with the same unit. It is currently sitting on my kitchen counter and we keep it running all night, every night and all day on the weekends. My favorite design was the old one. The new larger models have large, flat bases which are harder to drain, clean and fill. Even though it says it has larger capacity, the steamer does not use all the water up. It stops steaming after using one gallon of water, leaving extra in the base which is fine with me. Each day I pour in another gallon, and plug it in.

This vaporizer is inexpensive and it works. It humidifies well, it's simple (no filters or expensive additives) and easy to maintain. Simply put ... it puts water in the dry air for a low cost. I don't see why the other reviewers have had problems with it.

Normally these types of humidors are awful because most humidification devices over humidify causing mold, but if you use a self regulating humidification device then these potentially become one of the best humidors around. I recommend a lower percent Humidipak, 65% is good because it's a sealed container. Humidipaks normally last a few weeks in a normal humidor, but in a sealed container like this they can last months and months keeping perfect humidity.

I have used this type of Acrylic Humidor for traveling for over 15 years.

They hold many cigars and can endure violent mistreatment at the hands of TSA and baggage handlers.

These work very well, but ONLY if you follow the advice of this and the other reviews:

1) Use a Boveda Humidipak for humidity regulation. This humidor is completely airtight. Without bidirectional humidification, your sticks will be either too wet or too dry. In desert conditions (Vegas) I supplement the humidification with a stick-shaped oasis.

2) Use packing when traveling. A simple washcloth or rag will do, but I prefer to pack some loose tobacco leaves in the top to prevent the sticks from shaking about. Several cigar manufacturers (Drew, Kristoff, etc) use loose tobacco for packing in their boxes, you can ask your tobacconist for some.

This specific humidor was purchased for a young Army sergeant on his fourth tour, this time in Afghanistan.

The solder, humidor and a few cigars returned unscathed, despite very hostile conditions for all.

These work great. Simple, easy to use, keeps my cigars very moist and fresh. Now, if there was only a way to "dress it up" and properly display it.

Honest reviews on Prestige Import Group Acrylic Cigar Jar

This product is just not good. Do yourself a favor and go talk to your local tobacconist. Perhaps you will be able to avoid cracking your first batch of cigars and cover your second batch in mold.

Does what it is supposed to do. It would be great if it had a longer useage interval between changes but, it lasts a reasonable amount of time. It also seems that the price is high for the small amount of pads that come in the supply pouch. Another thing is, there is no generic pads as a replacement for the manufactuers pads. You can't go buy it cheaper from a competitor, so the price is what the price is. Still, it's a good hot air humidifier and we're glad we made the original purchase 3 years ago.

This is a 3" pad. It doesn't look like the one pictured. I purchased it thinking that it was the same pad as in the picture. My Enviracaire Germ Free humidifier has a 1" reservoir. I don't know how a 3" filter is supposed to be crammed into there. The EMP-15P (pictured) filter is supposed to fit the EMP-220 humidifier. The package I received looked nothing like the one pictured. The filters I received did not have the hang tag they were just in a blank clear plastic bag with no part number or text on it. The company that sold it to me said it was the same pad. However there are clearly more holes on the pad I received and it is way bigger than what I had before.

These pads work well with my humidifier. If they aren't too used you can soak them in white vinegar and reuse.

Honest reviews on Slant Fin 195518 Replacement Mineral Absorption Pads

The mineral absorption pads I received were different from the description of the product. These are larger pads than what I need and I intend to return them.

I was issued a full refund promptly from the seller.

The pads came in a clear unmarked sealed plastic bag and they were the larger ones -you have to trim them with scissors to fit. They are not the ones pictured in this seller's advertisement (i.e. false advertising). However it would be too much of a hassle to return so I will just trim them. The seller could at least specify the diameter in the description along with a disclaimer saying "note you will not get the same product as the picture in our posting".

This works perfectly, i have a 12'x16'x8'room and on the lowest setting it keeps my room at about 30-40% humidity. This unit it silent and runs about 1 day+ on a tank full.

Has worked very well so far. My daughter's room is 11 X 11 and the output control on this does the work well. I use a rubberized sheet on the carpet under the humidifier. The unit is simple enough to clean. And I use vinegar to clean the inside container. My wife and I are very happy with the purchase.

Best Deals for Hunter 31008 Microban Ultrasonic Small Room Humidifier

the unit works great in my 12 X 16 bedroom. Keeps my sinuses happy. If you follow the cleaning instructions, it will stay mold free and work well.

however, I'm going to have to use this in a different space in my home. It is loud and makes bubbling noises, even on the lowest setting. I can even hear the motor running. I have had it for two months now hoping I would get use to it, but I just can't. It has affected my quality of sleep.

This will work great in my living room, but not in a bedroom. Even my husband who is hard of hearing is kept awake by it.

Honest reviews on Hunter 31008 Microban Ultrasonic Small Room Humidifier

Not completely satisfied. Output is weak. Although the output is silent, there is a fairly loud dripping sound as the water enters the bottom of the unit from the tank that is disturbing if you use the unit while sleeping.

I love the quiet, cool mist. Great for bedside or desk top at work. I would like the tank to be a smidgen larger but then it wouldn't be so amall. At work I have to fill using a gallon jug so the small fill hole can be tricky. At home the fill hole is perfect for a sink faucet. The tank lasts about 8 hours full blast. The adjustable mist control is also a plus.

This product arrived in 8 days instead of the 5 promised. I was told to purchase this when my Hut-200 series humidifier stopped working. Replacing this piece did not solve the problem like the customer service rep said it would. The humidifier was only a few months old. Don't buy either product.

I got one season out of it. I wasted my money buying all the replacement filters for the second year. The light came on but it went from filling it up every day to filling it once a week.It never worked correctly again. I wound up throwing the thing away.

This product is trash. Absolute rubbish. It is so cheaply built. I went along with my pool builder's recommendation and had this unit installed. There is no water tightness when assembled. When assembled, water gushes out of the middle of the pole, the section where the two halves are joined. We had a plumber try all sorts of water sealing techniques, and none of them worked. Run away from this Chinese company. They are definitely not testing their own products. This product is made-in-china garbage. If you value your money, definitely don't even think about "pool-n-sun".

If 0 (zero) stars was an option, that's what I would have given it.

I installed this for a friend and it works great. Had only one problem with the hose connection on the bottom of the shower was leaking. I figured out that the connection is female pipe threads and not female hose threads, not in the instruction. I used a short pipe nipple with a fitting for conecting a hose and there was no leak. Last week, 5 people used it back to back to wash off being in the lake.

Easy to set up and enjoyed by everyone. So great to get out of the pool and take a lovely warm shower outside. Love it!!

Honest reviews on XL Solar Pool Shower, 9.2gal, modular

We live in central FL and wanted an outdoor shower to use in the colder months. I must say, this shower is great! It doesn't come with a stand so you will need to bolt it to the pool deck or something like it. We bolted it to a paver and just put it beside the pool deck. Based on another review, I got a black hose to run from the spigot so there would be a little more hot water.

We haven't had much issue with leaking and the setup was super easy. You will need a drill, a socket set, and a pair of pliers. The teflon tape is even included.

The capacity is pretty good and will last two showers (if you turn the water off between soap up and rinse) without much problem. The only downside is that the water cools off rather quickly when the sun goes down. If you want a nice, hot shower in the winter, catch it before sundown for sure. There is no insulation on the column so that's why I didn't give it 5 stars. I little more effort could have made this thing spectacular.

All in all, we love it. It looks nice and we bought a bamboo mat to go with it. I would recommend you get a mat, a 50' or more black hose and a t-fitting for the spigot. Other than that, you will be good to go!

The pool shower is sitting in the blistering hot sun all day, and still, no hot or even warm water. The black "quick garden hose connector" does not hold the garden hose, water pressure pulls the garden hose out of it.

Tried connecting the regular sized garden hose directly, but it seems to large to fit the pool shower connector, so water sprays out everywhere. Tried plumbers putty and white plumbers tape, but nothing works. Wasted my time. Shipping item back today.

A filter isn't a complicated endeavor, so it shouldn't cost an arm and a leg. That's why I like these. I bought a size too big accidentally, but cut it down to about half and its works just fine.

Excellent price, good quality.

Completely sufficient. Not too much to say, it's a humidifier "filter" replacement. It wicks the water up into a mesh structure that allows the air passing over it to provide humidity to the room.

If you still have a 43-5208 humidifier, you are going to have a problem the next time you need to replace the drive belts in the back. There are two that connect from the motor through a step down to drive the drum.

The belts are hard to find, if you can find them at all, and they are ridiculously expensive. What makes matters worse is that they last about a year.

The problem is they are inexpensive neoprene and not the right material for a drive belt. They are really just an O ring. O rings are common place but the 5" size is unusual.

I found an excellent replacement that will likely last many years. It is made of urethane, 70 durometer (can stretch) and is slightly bigger in the O. I paid less than $12 for a pair of them. I found them at Able O-Rings (Toronto and Rochester). Their part number 155P700
