I have had this humidifier for a few months now and use it in MY bedroom as well as my 15 month old twins' bedroom. I had an Ultrasonic humidifier (filter-less) but discovered the 'white powder' effect after using one (google it).

PROS:

(1) It's quiet! Yay!

(2) It doesn't change the temperature of the room even though it's a cool mist humidifier

(3) I use one of those gadges to see if it's humid enough in the room and this machine definitely works

(4) The filter doesn't need replacing THAT often (maybe every 6-7 months or so)

(5) The tank can sit in the sink to be filled and doesn't topple over

(6) Super easy to set up and use

CONS:

(1) It's pretty big and bulky

(2) I hope the UV light to kill germs is working because I don't see it anywhere

I would definitely recommend this cool mist humidifier though!

I live on the East Coast so dry winter air is a MAJOR problem for me. I have my humidifier running 24/7. I have tried many different ones, but this one is by far the best I've found so far. It's extremely quiet even on the highest speed, I can run it for 16 hours on the highest setting without having refill the tank, and the best part for me is NO WHITE DUST!!! I have very hard water but even with that there is never any white dust. If I need another humidifier in the future I would buy another one of these.

This unit is comprised of four parts that are elegant in their simplicity and optimization. Part 1, the base "platter", is merely a simple piece of tough plastic (no motor, no switches, nothing electrical, no mounted parts at all) embossed to provide channels that conduct water from one end (where Part 2, the reservoir "jug", sits) to the other end where the water is absorbed up into the cylindrical wick "filter" cylinder (Part 3) where the powerful fan in the upper main unit (Part 4) pulls air through the moist filter perimeter and ejects it upward into the room. In my moderately large house (3600 sq ft) I have 4 of these units running, and the reservoirs (1+ gallons) have to be refilled every 12 hours (8+ gallons per day total) to maintain reasonable humidity in house. These work much better than my furnace-mounted humidifier.

Reservoir refill process is, take a 2 gallon plastic bucket of water to humidifier, lift out reservoir, lift off main unit, put wick filter in bucket to soak, make a trip to sink to refill reservoir jug, put wick filter back in place, put main unit back in place, drop reservoir jug into main unit, move on to next humidifier. In a 4-month heavy heating season, you'll need new throw-away wick filters ($9) at the outset, and half-way through. (The manufacturer-supplied wick filters are the only item that can be improved on. Don't buy Honeywell's replacement. Get Sunbeam SWF-227. They're 5-1/2" instead of 5" tall, but after they're soaked, you can easily squish them down.)

At end of season, clean platter and reservoir in the dishwasher if you like, and wipe down underside of main unit surfaces with a damp cloth. Not absolutely necessary, the surfaces don't accumulate deposits that much. The only other thing you'll need to replace periodically is the special UV lamp that shines down from the main unit into the water channel to kill any stray incoming bacteria/virus.

Get humidified, and stop the itching.

Honest reviews on Honeywell Germ Free Cool Mist Humidifier, HCM-350

I've been through about a dozen different humidifiers over the years. It gets extremely dry here in the winter so we run these all the time.

Sound: For those of you that appreciate white noise to help you sleep, this probably won't be enough for you. This is the quietest humidifier I've found.

Refills: On the highest setting this will last around 18 hours so I can easily run it for two nights without refills. On a lower setting, running only at night, I'd imagine you could get away with refills only every 4 nights or so. The handle design is the most comfortable and well balanced of any humidifier I've ever owned so trips to and from the sink aren't so awkward. The lid is extremely easy to get off/on and my husband never over tightens this one. The fill tank opening is not only easy to get into but very large so a gushing flow from the tub can fill it up very quickly.

Air Quality: I don't know how it does it, but it does the best job of any humidifier I've ever owned. You will never have water condensation around the base (or anywhere else for that matter). The air never gets too heavy with moisture that it feels muggy (although I've never tried it on high in a room smaller than 10x10). But it makes a very noticeable difference to my comfort and breath-ability during colds. Because the air output is straight up, you don't have to worry about having it too near dressers or bed linens or anything else getting too wet.

The only downfalls are the price (most expensive in a lot of stores) and the size. It is pretty large. But I think the size is worth it as it is used for a more powerful fan and a large water tank leaving refills less frequent.

Bought the Honeywell HCM-350 two months ago to help to eliminate the dryness in our bedroom during the winter months. The unit is quiet and attractive. We run it on low, 24 hrs. a day, and you don't even notice any sound coming from it. It has eliminated the dry stuffy nose problems you always have in a house heated with forced air heat. Both my wife and I sleep better and breath easier during the night. I would recommend this unit to anyone wanting to humidify a single large room. It will NOT humidify an entire house, but may do the job for a small apartment. I would definitely recommend this unit to friends. The filter needs to be replaced periodically as minerals from your tap water will accumulate with time. The filter life can be extended by soaking it in vinegar and rinsing it out once it gets "limed up". The filter will still need to be replaced with this cleaning method, but not as often. Amazon offers the best price I've found ... beats Walmart by $20.00!!

What can I say? My AC contractor used to replace my filters with very expensive ones, a slightly different looking model, with a cord running through the folds, which cost around 60 bucks a unit. Now I found these, and they are just as good as the expensive ones. So I get almost 4 for the price of one! Can't beat that! I'll keep buying these as long as they are going to make them and sell them at this competitive price!

I wish I would have seen the last guys review--I'll post some pictures of what you will actually be getting! The refund was a huge hassle and they at first offered me $10 to keep the product and then they required me to send in pictures because they didn't believe me....and not to mention everyone I spoke to had a thick mid-eastern accent so that always makes communication a little difficult!

It is not the same amount in quarts and also listed not for human consumption--it does look the like the main picture shown--but it is NOT a tea kettle--you shouldn't drink out of it--it is only for humidifying the room.

I am hoping the vendor will return my money + shipping.

These filters fit, but are not made specifically for the humidifiers listed. They don't have the built in clip to hold them in place, and they are cut just a little smaller then the factory filters. They seem to work ok so far, but hard to say how well they compare to the factory made filters....

Does what it is supposed to do. It would be great if it had a longer useage interval between changes but, it lasts a reasonable amount of time. It also seems that the price is high for the small amount of pads that come in the supply pouch. Another thing is, there is no generic pads as a replacement for the manufactuers pads. You can't go buy it cheaper from a competitor, so the price is what the price is. Still, it's a good hot air humidifier and we're glad we made the original purchase 3 years ago.

This is a 3" pad. It doesn't look like the one pictured. I purchased it thinking that it was the same pad as in the picture. My Enviracaire Germ Free humidifier has a 1" reservoir. I don't know how a 3" filter is supposed to be crammed into there. The EMP-15P (pictured) filter is supposed to fit the EMP-220 humidifier. The package I received looked nothing like the one pictured. The filters I received did not have the hang tag they were just in a blank clear plastic bag with no part number or text on it. The company that sold it to me said it was the same pad. However there are clearly more holes on the pad I received and it is way bigger than what I had before.

I was issued a full refund promptly from the seller.

The pads came in a clear unmarked sealed plastic bag and they were the larger ones -you have to trim them with scissors to fit. They are not the ones pictured in this seller's advertisement (i.e. false advertising). However it would be too much of a hassle to return so I will just trim them. The seller could at least specify the diameter in the description along with a disclaimer saying "note you will not get the same product as the picture in our posting".

Whirlpool Energy Star 70-Pint 2-Speed Dehumidifier, AD70GUSB
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program UPDATE 8/21: After only 2 days of using the Whirlpool, it started to leak badly from under the unit. I called the manufacturer and was told that there is no warranty since Amazon is not considered to be an "authorized dealer" for this item. So, the 4-stars have been changed to 1 star. Think twice before purchasing this since it does not appear to be built well enough to run for more than a short while and, when it breaks, there is ZERO warranty protection.

Original review:

Bottom line: The Frigidaire gets some serious competition from the Whirlpool, but keeps its top spot. The Keystone is a distant third.

Full review: If you live in a humid area a dehumidifier is essential unless you want to have to scrub mold off the basement walls. So, I'm always looking for the "best" that is available, and had the opportunity to put models from Frigidaire, Whirlpool and Keystone in a head-to-head test. Highlights are as follows:

F = Frigidaire FAD704DWD Frigidaire FAD704DWD Energy Star 70-pint Dehumidifier

W = Whirlpool AD70GUSB [This listing]

K = Keystone KSTAD70B Keystone Energy Star 70 Pt. Dehumidifier, KSTAD70B

All are 70 pint models, have auto RH control, can be used with a built-in bucket or plumbed to a drain, have a built-in washable filter.

Build quality: The W and F models are neck and neck on this. Both feel solid and well-made. The K is a bit less robust feeling, but still decent. [SEE UPDATE ABOVE REGARDING BUILD QUALITY, OR LACK THEREOF, OF THE WHIRLPOOL]

Water bucket: I find this to be an important feature since I usually run them in bucket mode rather than plumb to a drain. The W and F models have solid-feeling buckets with top plates to help make them more rigid and easier to empty. The F gets to the top spot since I find it a bit easier to remove and reinsert the bucket than on the W. The K is a distant third with a flimsy bucket with a poorly designed carry handle.

Controls: Each has some unique features, but all are easy to use. The manuals for each are worth reading, but all can be sussed out by just looking at the panel. All have the usual high/low fan speeds, RH setting, and signal lights for filter checks, full buckets, etc. The W has the edge on this, since it offers some useful features not found on the others, such as an auto fan mode, which varies the fan speed based on the room RH vs the set RH. For example, if the room is at 60% RH and you set the controls to 40% RH, the fan will start off in high mode, then switch to low speed when it gets closer to the target setting. I find that to be a nice feature, and give this one to W.

Fan placement: Both the W and K models use a side discharge. The F uses a top discharge. While both are OK, I find the top discharge to be more practical since I can locate the unit pretty much anywhere. Plus, the top discharge circulates the dry air better throughout the room. Advantage F.

Accuracy: All seem to have about the same level of RH accuracy, and cycle on/off as needed. The fan on the W seems to run longer than the other units. Tie for all.

Sound: The F model is a bit quieter than the W the compressor on the W makes more of a whine, and also shakes the unit more on start/stops. The K is the loudest by far. Advantage F.

Appearance: They are all rectangular white boxes. I think the F looks a little more sleek, and is slightly more compact. Advantage F, but tastes will vary on this.

In the end, the F keeps its crown as my top choice for a dehumidifier. The W is also a good choice, but in comparison to the F it's a 4.5 star product due to the louder (albeit slightly) operating sound and the side air discharge. But, you'd certainly would want to cross-shop them both. [UPDATE: YOU MAY WANT TO AVOID THE W DUE TO LACK OF WARRANTY SUPPORT] The K is worth getting only if you plan on plumbing it to a drain to avoid bucket issues, and are not concerned about sound levels.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program When given the chance to try this Whirlpool Energy Star 70 Pint 2-Speed Dehumidifier, I literally jumped at the chance. When we bought our home last year it came with a 25 pint Frigidaire model that ran all the time and was noisy, yet never could get the humidity down to a reasonable level. This one arrived, intact and in one piece, although a stray piece of broken white plastic that fell out of the box while we were unpacking it, and didn't match the unit. We looked all over to find where it might have broken off of and couldn't find it, making us wonder where it came from.

That aside, Once you cut the packing binders, you simply pull up on the box to get the dehumidifier out. You can't really see it in the picture, but the unit has a carrying handle, and while heavy, it was nowhere near the weight of the 25 pint Frigidaire unit that it was replacing. It is kind of bulky, so use care getting in into your basement.

Since we prefer to drain directly to the sump pump, attaching the hose to the drain plug on the back was easily done just unscrew the plug cap, and attach the hose to the unit. We plugged it in, turned it on and set it to auto. The unit is silent in low fan mode, and very quiet in high mode. The unit didn't rattle or vibrate. After running for a while, we could feel a difference in the basement, and we could hear a difference in that the new unit wasn't making a racket like the older unit. This unit takes in air through the front grille, passes the air through a filter, rends the liquid from the air and then discharges it trough a grille on the right hand side. This means you can place it next to a wall if you are using the bucket to collect water.

To clean the filter (and it has a reminder light that goes off after so many hours of operation), remove the collection bucket completely from the unit. The filter pulls down from a tab located on the roof of the collection bay, behind the intake grille. The directions do a good job of illustrating the procedure. Cleaning the filer is easy it can be vacuumed or washed.

NOW, all that said, while the unit has WHIRLPOOL on the label, we did notice that it's shaped and designed like the Frigidaire model, and another model that we're using at a project house that the owner picked up at a warehouse club that has a product name that none of us have heard of (and has been really inconsistent in what it does. Since Frigidaire is a Electrolux product and Whirlpool is owned by the company of that name, its making me think that these are coming from the same factory, just with different brand names.

ONE FINAL NOTE: before buying any dehumidifier, MEASURE the area that its going to be working in. Measure the LENGTH of the area, by the WIDTH and BY THE HEIGHT because these machines deal not in square footage, but in cubic feet. Don't rely on the amount of water that the tank holds, because that isn't an indicator of anything but the amount of water it holds. Bigger isn't better. If you get a unit that is too small, its going to run all the time and wear out sooner. Buy too big of a unit and you're wasting money. Buy the unit that fits your needs within reason.

Best Deals for Whirlpool Energy Star 70-Pint 2-Speed Dehumidifier, AD70GUSB

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I have a Dayton running in my basement which is a real workhorse. It has an 80 pint reservoir and was relatively quiet for such a strong machine. It also fills up in about 16 hours, and much faster on high! It was about the same price as this machine, but that was about 6 years ago.

My basement is about 1200 square feet. I have an old (100+ year) house with a stone foundation. Humidity is usually pretty high down there. Comparing this to the Dayton, it is significantly more quiet, and the Dayton was pretty quiet when compared to equivalant machines. I do have to say that I don't think these machines are in the same league, as it takes much longer for the Whirlpool to fill up its smaller reservoir. This makes me wonder if the energy star rating is just a weaker fan? I will compare electric bills in two cycles, but I think this machine runs more to compensate for what might be a weaker fan. Either way, you can easily have a conversation standing next to it without having to raise your voice, and that's when it is on high! Very nice. I love that. Don't get me wrong, you can still hear it, but it is easy for me to tune it out. I also like that it has a handle to carry it up and down the stairs if I have to move it.The wheels allow it to roll easily, too. It is a little difficult to pullthe reservoir out, but once you do, it has a handle, too (which the Dayton did not have), which makes it easy to carry.

The air exhausts from the right side (your right as you face the front of the machine), so keep that in mind if you have a specific place to place it, as it might become an issue. I also like that it hasa filter that you can clean.

When all is said and done, this is a little pricey, but I think it is a solid machine. It also tells you the relative humidity and programming it is simple enough. If you need something with a larger capacity and a real work horse, get the Drayton, if you don't need something so extreme, and 70 pints is fine, I think this machine will do just fine. 4.5 stars.

One thing to note, my box was crushed at both ends, but there was no visible damage to the machine, which was amazing. I would have lost that bet. It would be nice if they would package it a little better.

Honest reviews on Whirlpool Energy Star 70-Pint 2-Speed Dehumidifier, AD70GUSB

As dehumidifiers go, this unit works just fine. The BIG problem I have with this unit is how difficult it is to remove the water bin when full. There are no easy places to pull the bin out of the dehumidifier. There are small shallow finger recesses on the side of the unit, but when the water bucket is full, the weight of bucket prevents it from sliding freely.

Sorry Whirlpool, not impressed.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The Whirlpool Energy Star 70-Pint 2-Speed Dehumidifier is, as far as I can tell, identical to the Hisense DH-70K1SJE4 Energy Star 70-Pint 2-Speed Dehumidifier, with the single difference being that it does not have an ionizer. The Whirlpool dehumidifier comes with paperwork saying that it is manufactured by Hisense, and all contact and repair information refers to Hisense. That said, I've been relatively happy with both the Hisense and the Whirlpool.

The Whirlpool meets many of the important points I look for-

-It is constructed of sturdy plastic and seems well made.

-It weighs approximately 20 lbs, (not including water, which can add a significant amount of weight), but has wheels on the bottom that make it easily maneuverable.

-It has a large water capacity.

-It has an automatic draining feature, that is very easy to set up and works well.

-ALthough it doesn't come with its own hose for the automatic draining, it uses a normal garden hose, rather than a proprietary size as some do, which makes it easy and cheap to buy a hose and replacements.

-When manually emptying, the drawer slides out very easily, and is easy to replace. (This is a very important point, as in some humidifiers they can be almost impossible to fit back in correctly.)

-The noise level is standard for this size dehumidifier. (Although I am using the unit in a basement; I'm not sure I'd want the noise in a living area, but I don't think I've ever had a dehumidifier quiet enough that it wouldn't bother me in a living area.)

-It is an energy star model.

-It has digital controls, which are bright and easy to see, and the buttons work well.

The controls/display include current humidity and temperature, and a timer.

The settings allow control of-

-Fan speed (low, high, and auto)

-Deired humidity (continuous, normal, and auto dry)

-Timer

There are several ways the humidifier can be controlled-

-You can set it to maintain a particular humidity, leaving it on constantly.

-You can turn it on with a particular fan speed, leaving it on constantly.

-You can set it on a timer to run for a certain length of time. However, unlike other humidifiers I've used, this is a one-time setting. I.e. It can be set to turn on for 2 hours, but cannot be set to automatically turn on every day for 2 hours.

-You can set it to turn on at a certain time. However, when using that setting, as far as I can tell, you can't set the length of time it will run; you need to come back to turn it off.

I have two main complaints about this dehumidifier-

-There is no warranty. This is a massive problem for a relatively expensive item. If you are considering purchasing, I would recommended learning what purchase protection is offered by your credit card.

-Second is the lack of specific control of the timer; more specific controls would allow more efficient use and energy savings by allowing it to be turned off when not needed. Although it can be set to turn on at a specific time once, it cannot be set to turn off, so it will be running until you can make it back to shut it off again. Also, it is a one-time setting. I.e. It cannot be set to come on at a certain time every day. However, this seems to be fairly standard in every dehumidifier I've seen recently.

Overall a solid dehumidifier; although it doesn't stand out in any way, I haven't had any problems with it after more than a month of use.

Cheap Aprilaire Humidifier Maintenance Kit for 550 series

Aprilaire Humidifier Maintenance Kit for 550 series
Customer Ratings: 5 stars

I recently bought a house and it has an Aprilaire Humidifier 550. I did some research online on how to maintain it and after looking at mine I figured I needed to replace a few parts. The price for this kit was much cheaper than going direct.

Negatives:

1. There were small protrusions on the sides of the new distribution tray. The old one did not have them and the protrusions prevented the setup from fitting correctly into the humidifier. The problem was easily fixed but cutting out some notches in the protrusions and then everything fit snugly. I am not sure if this is normal and a problem since I may have an older 550 or not but it was a little annoying.

2. I received a manual with the kit (which I did not expect to get) but it for was other model Aprilaire Humidifiers and I don't think it covered the 550. Which is no big deal since I didn't need a manual. Just thought that was odd.

Positives:

All in all I got it up and going quickly with this kit.

Purchased along with a solenoid, completely retrofitted the Aprilaire 550 humidifier in new home we moved into. It's like brand new now....excellent quality parts.

Honest reviews on Aprilaire Humidifier Maintenance Kit for 550 series

Confirmed that I have a 550 model humidifier and everything fit together nicely except for the water distribution tray fitting into the scale control insert. The insert is just a bit too wide and deep by about a 1/4 inch but it did not make that big of a difference to fit into the humidifier. No one will notice anyway and it works as it should. Just be sure to use a hair dryer for the feed tube as it does not seem that pliable.

Aside from the slight fitment issue, it is nice having everything nice and new inside and ready to go. I just moved into this house and who knows how long it's been since the existing was replaced.

This is a great device. You can't beat the price, the quality, the ease of installation. It's great. We love it, completely satisfied. The display unit does not mount to a wall. The exterior wind gauge needs to be precisely mounted to get correct wind direction and does, as we are finding out, prefer to be high on the peak of a roof rather than off the edge of a deck (our deck is about 20 ft above ground level)...in other words, the higher the better.

Overall, if you are a weather nerd and want a weather nut enthusiast grade weather station, this is the one for you. I would highly recommend this unit!

Cheers!

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

The Weather Station WS-1913TWC-IT-SAL from La Crosse Technology is an inexpensive home weather station that is fairly easy to get working. The issues start when you attempt to mount the console and the wind probe and temperature/sending unit. The directions are typical for products made in China: the print size is really small, too general or misleading or incomplete instructions, and the graphics are almost useless. Phone calls and emails to La Crosse Technology were answered, but only after repeated calls and complaints. The responses were erroneous and reflected little knowledge about the product beyond the printed instructions. When I asked for some better details on installing the probes they emailed me a link to their PDF manual the same one that I got in the box.

The biggest problem I had was the erroneous claim that the console could be hung on a wall. One of the La Crosse reps said it could be hung on a nail. Take a look at the slanted curved rear of the console and you can clearly see it CAN NOT BE HUNG UP. She insisted it was suppose to hang from the non-centered tiny hole in the back of the console, a reset hole I believe. The box and the user manual clearly state the console can be hung up. The La Crosse people finally acknowledged the unit can not be hung up. They claim " Unfortunately, the wall hanging option is not available on this model. The indication was a misprint which we apologize for." We specifically purchased this model because it could be wall mounted. Thus, we returned the unit and are looking for a different model from a different company.

If you are looking for an inexpensive weather station with a free standing console this model may be okay. Personally, I'm looking for a product with better customer and technical support, even if it costs me more.

This station offered the features that you would want to be aware of before stepping outside. I found the wireless range to be sufficient to place the sensors well out from the house. My only gripe is that the wind rotors are rather flimsy and I am on my third set. La Crosse will not warranty the rotors and you have to buy them from a separate vendor.

Honest reviews on La Crosse Technology WS-1913U-IT-SAL Wireless Professional Station

I have owned the unit not long enough to go through a set of batteries; yet the display dimmed to almost the point where it could not be seen. After contacting La Crosse I put in new batteries (tested for strength and yes they were fresh and full strength according to my Greenlee DM-20). Greenlee DM-20 Manual Ranging Digital Multimeter With Test Lead Now there is no readout on the display.

I went through the full procedure on how to first load the batteries on the sending units then the receiving unit more than once. Still no display.

La Crosse must be run over by customer problems if the responses are indicative of situation. I have used the email approach and have called neither time did I receive much in the way of real help. Yes the instructions are confusing and the unit does not report wind direction that is an error in the instructions and a lacking in the unit. I hope I can find my receipt not bought at Amazon but a big box store. I have had it not a year the warranty is for one year. I anticipate La Crosse will tell me tough luck. My response will be predictable.

If it worked then I would have been pleased certainly not top of the line but promised to report basic information. $90 is not cheap I'll explore for another unit, but there are not many makers of these devices; although there seem to be endless iterations of slightly different models.

The La Crosse weather center was very easy to set up. It comes with the hardware to attach the exterior wind gauge. However, the hardware is made for a very slender bar. I used an old bird feeder stand to mount the wind gauge. The description does not say anything about a cable that goes from the wind gauge to the exterior sensor. The sensor gets the best reception right outside the window where the inside unit is. Therefore, there is a long cable that is stretched across my yard to the wind sensor. Mounting on the roof of the house is the best suggestion I have. Don't know how accurate the wind gauge is. I also can't comment on the accuracy of the barometer. It does seem to change during storms.

Overall, a good product for minimal weather information. It's great for immediate temperature and winds.
