I live in a 1 bedroom apartment in Hollywood CA. I have an in wall ac unit like most people do out here and no A/C in my bedroom. So I decided to try this out.... Well I couldn't be happier. Even with my window closed this fan is strong enough to keep me cool. I usually don't even put water in it but if you want it to be cold get 2 gallons of water put them in the fridge for a day then throw them in this thing. Will make it even colder. I get very hot very very easily and still have no problem with it. Love it!

I live in a studio apartment where a 10,000-BTU a/c handles most of the cooling.

Unfortunately, the cold air doesn't quite reach the bathroom, around a corner through an alcove.

So for many years I have had a Slant/Fin Personal Zone Air Cooler perched on the window sill in there (it's a pre-war building with windows in the bathrooms), pointed down at me when I'm, uh, reading...

The S/F finally conked -the motor gave out, and water leaked through the water level indicator window -so I was looking for a compact air cooler to fit in the bathroom. S/F no longer makes air coolers, apparently.

Enter this unusual tower, which looks rather like one might expect Dr. Who's nemesis, a Dalek, to look like if the cyborg slimmed down and became a fashion model... Like a Dalek, this tower rolls around on casters, but it lacks a plunger or exterminator ray!

Goodness, but this Dalek blows a gust of cool air! If you used this just as a tower fan, it seems to blow more air at the highest of three fan speed settings than any tower fan I've ever encountered -strong enough to make a plastic bottle of dental solution wobble on the bathtub rim three or four feet away!

But things get even cooler when you push the Cool button, activating a water pump that moistens a sponge-like wick through which air blows inside the tower. You add water to the reservoir that slides back from the base of the tower; the tower also comes with two ice packs you can chill in your freezer and slide into compartments in the water reservoir, yielding extra cool air for up to four hours, according to the instructions.

Other functions include a timer for automatic shut-off, side-to-side oscillation, a sleep mode that throttles down as the night air cools off while you sleep, and a "natural" mode, which randomly changes fan speed to simulate real breezes.

I am impressed by the manufacturer's attention to detail here. When you push a button, for example, the control lights get brighter, then dim after a few minutes. The tower also comes with a handy remote, duplicating all functions on the top switch panel. And the tower includes a washable air filter to keep the wick from getting gunked up by dust in the air.

One thing I'm not sure about is whether I will need to add some bleach to the water to prevent the fetid smells most coolers and humidifiers give off over time. The instructions don't address this issue. I can't imagine that the wick is treated with a germ-retardant that will continue to work after weeks and months.

In the meantime, however, this tower of power is sure keeping my bathroom cool and comfortable! The tower would probably work in any setting where you are within a fiveor six-foot radius. I should mention as well that the fan is quiet, even at the highest setting.

I will report back if I encounter any problems. Until then, I am impressed by the amount of cooling this tower provides, running on less energy than an incandescent light bulb consumes...

PROS:

* Tower form uses minimal floor space.

* Quiet in operation.

* Powerful fan.

* Swing mode disperses cool air.

* Several operating modes.

* Easy to maintain.

* Freezer packs for extra cooling.

* Remote control duplicates all functions.

* Minimum energy consumption.

* Casters enable easy re-positioning.

CONS:

* So far, haven't found any.

Honest reviews on Luma Comfort EC45S Tower Evaporative Cooler with 125 Square Foot

The huge tree that used to shade my house was taken down this Spring. I bought this evaporative cooler to help with the increased heat. Last week we had 3 days of 100 degrees in a row. At 4pm on the third day the house was 76 degrees, which I think is success. The water holding tank is a little difficult to pull out to fill, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars. Warning though, only good in low humidity climates. I could feel a rise is humidity in the room, which in Colorado is almost welcomed. This unit is good for small areas. I like the sleek non-bulky look. It is quiet enough.

This didn't even come close to doing what it says. If anything it made the room hotter!

I would not recommend this to anyone.

Just purchased a 10 year old home with inoperative humidifiers. Turns out both saddle valves were completely mineralized together, so the easy fix was to just replace them with new ones. These valves aren't the same as the original, but are comparable and fit perfectly in place of the old ones.

One of the best products that I have used for all 3 of my humidors. I have the 250count rectangle. But I am sure the smaller works just as well. The Boveda packs left my humidors fluctuating way too much. I picked up 3 of the 250ct rectangles. I am very glad I took the store clerks advice. No need to premeasure your beeds. That's the best part. Very simple to use. Fill the plastic rectangle with the DR.RH solution to the top. After 20 mins it's ready to use. Just shake off any access water and toss it in your humidor and forget about it. I get a 68-69% range of humidity in my box consistently. And that's just fine with me. Where 5 Boveda 70% packets would barely get me any higher then 65-67%. I like my sticks around 69% RH.

P.S. it does come with a sticky magnetic backing if you want to hang it on a wall in your humidor.

The styling is great. It really works we now own three. Easy to fill and it operates with ease. We have a least one running all day and all night.

My wife picked this up on a whim after she heard me complaining about how dry it felt in our bedroom. So far, I'm very glad she did.

The Good

This unit produces a lot of mist, definitely more than I initially expected. The literature says it will work in rooms up to 650 sqft or something like that, and I believe it.

The design is very cool. It doesn't look like any other humidifier I've ever seen although that's not saying much.

It comes with about 5 different/interchangeable pieces that can be used to change how tall the unit is. We use 2 of the pieces for a medium-sized look. I think the idea is to make it shorter if you want to put it on a shelf or table, or taller if you put it on the floor. Again, a very cool idea that I haven't seen before

Remote control included, which is the easiest and quickest way to control the thing (see below)

The bad

Controlling the unit without the remote takes much longer. There is just a single touch-screen area on the unit that turns it on, adjusts the settings up and then back down again. I know it's done for looks, but unfortunately you sometimes have to touch it over and over again to get to the setting you want. Luckily the remote helps

You have to push the adjustable pieces together firmly when changing the height, otherwise the seams are pretty visible. Not a big deal, but if you're a perfectionist it can bug you

Overall

I like this thing so far, and my wife loves it. It looks great, and works even better. We've been happy with this brand so far I reviewed one of their air coolers earlier this summer, and still love it so we'll definitely keep them in mind for appliances moving forward.

I'll start by saying my husband and I live in South Florida where, even though it is very humid outside, we a have very dry air-conditioning on 24/7, almost year-round.

I used to wake up everyday with a dry, slightly sore throat and never thought much of it because it did go away in maybe and hour. Recently I got the flu and realized my throat always felt raw and would throb painfully when the ac came on. I finally put 2 and 2 together (duh)! The problem was the dryness... after trying to sleep with the windows open we bought the Luma Comfort HC12W Cool Mist Vase Humidifier.

As soon as it arrived I loved the way it looked... not like a small appliance, but like a work of art! We turned it on and were impressed by all the cool and refreshing vapor. We set it on the nightstand and used overnight on the lowest setting... by morning our things were soaked with water; how disappointing. We tried a few more nights, taking everything else out of the nightstand and putting bigger and bigger towels under it. All were still wet every morning.

It seemed to my husband and I that there wasn't much difference on the amount of steam at each setting and the water ran out in less than 3 nights (about 15 to 20 hours) so we thought maybe it was defective. We contacted Amazon for an exchange and they sent us a return label and another unit, no questions asked.

Now, it's great! There is a bigger difference in steam at each setting level and we use it on the low still. Other things are back on the nightstand and no towel is needed anymore. We only have to refill it about every 4 to 5 days. I wake up in the morning with no scratchiness, itchiness or soreness in my throat. I imagine we might put setting higher next time one of us is sick with a cold or flu and it will be ok if we have to put a towel under it then... I will post and update when that happens, hopefully it will be a long while.

When I first moved to the high mountains (8400') of Colorado, I used a wick-type humidifier constantly. I also had a nasty little cough that stayed with me for 18 months. Finally, I took my doctor's advice and junked the humidifier. End of cough, due to things growing in the unit. I have been shopping for humidifiers again for a while, and found them all to be lacking severely. Either they were the same type of filter construction that had caused my illness, or they were cheaply made, or low-capacity. This unit may have a tippy storage tank when turned upside-down to fill, but it is well made. The screw-on cap for the reservoir is sturdy and has a rubber gasket. There are carrying handles on the top and bottom of the water container to make it easy to manage, and it puts out a LOT of humidity. At 2/3 setting, it ran the humidity in my bedroom from 22 to 35% the first night, all while being completely silent. The (silent) piezo-electric ultrasonic element is the same as is used in the tweeters of my big PA speakers, and these are practically indestructible if kept clean. The huge water reservoir does mean that it is big, and the styling is retro, which is OK, I guess. More expensive units from the same manufacturer have useless and noisy digital features with the same overall construction. Overall, a solid five.

Update on 22Mar2012: This thing is great. The silver (yes, they impregnate the plastic with silver) added to the water chamber means that there is virtually no scum build-up inside. I did clean it once in the time I have had it. The little metal diaphragm of the ultrasonic element is brass not silver, so I do wipe that off every now and then, but this thing is fantastic. I always run filtered water in it. If you don't, you are either leaving the unfiltered residue in the tank, or blowing it out into your room! Give your sinuses, musical instruments and wood furniture a nice gift.

Update 10 Oct 2013: Another dry heating season has begun. I got this unit out and washed it out with lime juice. Lemon will do, as will vinegar, but the lemon or lime smells better. Then I cleaned the brass diaphragm visible in the top of the base, and off it went, running at full power. I have read reviews where units failed early. It sounds like they may have quality-control issues from time to time. I can only speak of this unit, and it has been indestructible. I run it every day all winter.

I bought this humidifier because it seemed perfect:

1, Large capacity 2 gallons or so lasts about 24 hours and isn't too heavy to re-fill

2, Cool mist OR warm mist capability I prefer warm mist, but the heating elements usually take too much cleaning

3, Virtually silent operation no loud fans, just the occasional bubble from the reservoir

4, Nice design

5, Great reviews durability and performance were both praised

6, Germ prevention not sure this is strictly necessary with a warm mist humidifier (boiling water, etc), but apparently a nice to have for cold mist humidifiers.

Believing this justified the cost, which is 2.5 times more than any other humidifier I've ever bought, I bought one. It worked pretty well for just less than 2 weeks. Then there was a loud popping noise and now it doesn't work anymore.

I will bother to exchange it for a new one, but I won't be buying any others from this maker. At the price, I would expect much greater durability (even the forty dollar humidifiers last a couple of years or so) and there should be an electronic humidistat so that you can regulate the humidity. This model only has a dial that seems to govern output. The model with a humidistat is twice the price (daylight robbery, instead of this one, which is merely standard burglary).

I'm upset with this product, but I'm even more upset with humidifier manufacturers in general. I know water and electronics don't mix, but what I'm discovering is that the only genuinely bulletproof humidifiers on the market are the buckets of water with fans ("evaporative"). Really?? That's state of the art for you guys? Can you at least hook up with Dyson and make the fans quieter?

--UPDATE--

I've now got a replacement and I've noticed a couple of differences: Firstly, the dial on the new machine does much more to regulate the amount of visible mist than the dial on my original machine. Second, the tank now lasts for at least three days instead of one or less. I already knew the original machine was faulty (it broke within 2 weeks), but based on this new information it looks like it was running at maximum, regardless of what the dial was set to. This leaves me with two important takeaways:

1, If you just bought the machine and want to know whether it's working properly, you should see a substantial change when you turn the dial, from almost no mist to lots.

2, Can the machine handle being left on maximum output continuously? I don't know, and after last time, I dare not risk it.

--UPDATE II: The sequel--

Well, the second unit that I received lasted the season and is now in storage, clean and dry. Cleaning is simpler than some of the humidifiers I've had in the past. There are no exposed tea-kettle elements, so it's just a case of washing in a weak vinegar solution. If it doesn't successfully start up again next season, I'll update this again. I will re-iterate that this humidifier is expensive. I expected it to work first time and it didn't. However, if it had I would have been as happy with this device as everyone else seems to be, so feel free to take my star rating with a grain of salt.

By the way, to partially address the comment I've had so far, this review only represents an n of 2 (not 1, smartypants). I think it's useful to tot up the star scores from all the reviews to get a reasonable proxy for the failure rate. For instance, if you do this for Samsung LCD televisions you get a 10% failure rate for a sample size that's approaching 1000. That compares pretty unfavorably with the other major marques like Sony and Sharp... but is borne out by what I've heard from sales people at electronic retail stores (ie, quasi-independent experts). Anyway, for this humidifier it's unclear because of the small sample size. At the time of writing, the failure rate looked like it was hovering around 20%, which doesn't sound great until you compare that to the failure rates of other humidifiers!

Bottom line: if I need another humidifier, this is my benchmark and I'd definitely consider buying it again ... from a store with a great return policy.

--UPDATE III: Comparison with SPT SU-4010--

I recently purchased the SPT SU-4010 from Amazon, which is another highly rated cold/warm mist humidifier. I like it for many of the same reasons that I now love the Germ Guardian. The chief difference is the SPT model is quieter (virtually silent) but puts out less mist over the same time period and has a smaller tank. If your [bedroom] is under 500 square feet and you need a silent humidifier, I'd recommend the SPT SU-4010. The ion exchange filter in that model even minimizes the "glugging" that is often the loudest noise from these type of humidifiers. If you have a larger room, or are aiming to maximize the volume of water you can get into the air over a given time, I still recommend the Germ Guardian. Note that I cannot yet speak to the reliability of the SPT SU-4010, but Consumer Reports rated it very highly. Please refer to my review of that model on this website if you'd like to progress updates for that model.

--UPDATE IV: Just bought another--

Saw a refurbished version of this Germ Guardian on an Amazon-affiliated website for half the price of a big warehouse store and bought it. Everything seems fine, although I've noticed a slightly disturbing difference in output from this one, which is now the third one of these I've owned. This one has to be cranked much higher to achieve the same mist in identical conditions. That could be because it's refurbished or it could be because there is a great deal of variability... Either way, something to bear in mind. I'm putting both away for the summer now so there won't be any more updates until next winter. I did a quick clean with a dilute solution of standard household vinegar and that should leave these ready to go then.

This is our second humidifier we've purchased from this manufacturer. We originally bought the one with the alarm clock, which is a great product and now we decided to buy this one. It is much more powerful & keeps our house very comfortable. (the original one we bought is in our bedroom). It's definitely a benefit that you don't have to constantly buy new filters.

Honest reviews on Pure Guardian H4500 144 Hour Ultrasonic Humidifier

I heat my house with wood heat and I needed two new humidifiers. After reading lots of reviews I liked this one because it has a large reservoir, it is quiet and it has the choice of cool or warm mist. After running them for a week they are great. The 2.5 gallon reservoir lasts all day and night set at about 80% setting. It is very quiet except for a little glug when the water drains into the unit. The mist is a little damp and could wet things where it falls, so plan accordingly.

The reservoir is not well balanced when filling but you get used to it. Cleaning is a snap and cleans up perfectly. The night light is too bright for a bedroom but the on/off light does enough of a night light for me.

Overall, I am very happy with these units and would buy them again.

I bought them from "Radio City Auctions" through Amazon and they came quickly and safely.

As reported in other reviews, this humidifier will leave a while film if the water used is not filtered or distilled. This film is not as benign as described in some other reviews (explanation below). If I had easy and/or inexpensive access to filtered water I would give this product 5 stars it works great, virtully noiseless as advertized, and virtually maintenance free with there being no filters to replace.

I've got one at home and one at the office. The tap water I have access to at work is treated (clorine), but not softened, and it's likley rather hard considering all of the minerals in the water here. After a few days running in the office the white film appeared on nearly every dark surface in the room (especially computer keyboard, printer, phone). Then my printer in my office started malfunctioning, then our copier. The copier repairman discovered the white film inside the copier, fouling up sensors and causing malfunction. He told us we'd have to stop using the humidifier or it would continue to cause problems. I now know why I had to just spend $400 on a new office printer as well. This dust that is emitted from the humidifier can float through the tiniest of cracks and holes and can deposit on nooks and crannies everywhere plenty of places you can't reach with a dust rag, much less a Q-tip. Pressurized air dusting spray does not seem to remove the dust effectively either.

I've got another at my home, 35 miles away, where our tap water is well water, which is untreated hard water. Here I've only noticed a small bit of the white film, on only a few of the darkest, shiniest surfaces. What appears on this humidifier that does not appear in the humidifier in the office, however, is a pinkish amber colored slime mold / mildew on the bottom side of the reservior (visible only when you refill the reservoir). This is probably becasue this water is not treated with clorine, and this part of the humidifier is creating a perfect breeding ground for bacterias, mold, mildew, etc. I'm not sure exactly what this slimy substance is, or if it's presence in the humidifier raises any health concerns. So I'm going to deduce that my water at home has less minerals in it that can turn into this white dust. I'm not sure if clorine in city water could also cause this white dust as well.

The bottom line is, if your water is perfect, this humidifier is close to perfect. If your water is not perfect, you may have some serious problems with this unit, and I would not reccomend it. I would strongly warn anybody against using this in a room with electronic devices if they are not totally sure their water is filtered properly.

As a humidifier it works well but I'm on my 3rd one in as many weeks. The first one had a malfunction in the LCD screen and the 2nd one constantly shut on and off while it made a horrible growling noise. We'll see how #3 holds up. When its working it performs well but I am having doubts about the quality control. I'm sure it's another quality Chinese product. Amazon has been terrific to deal with.

#3 had a defect as well. The indicated room temp stayed at 32 degrees no matter what the actual room temp. I tried blowing warm air over the sensing unit but it stayed at 32. I think I'll live with it because the reviews on the other humidifiers are not very good. At least this one does not leak and performs well.

On 5-15 the third one failed. These things are junk.

My wife and I moved to Illinois from South Florida in June. Since November I had really noticed how much drier it is in Illinois, especially at night with the heat on full blast. We purchased this humidifier and have been running it for about a week. It has been awesome. If you can deal with having to refill every night before bed, then you'll enjoy this piece of electronics. All dryness that I had to deal with at night before we got this is gone. It's pretty sweet. A night light that changes from green to blue is nice and relaxing. Not overwhelming unless you are a pitch black sleeper. It offers a bunch of settings, has an ionizer and allows you to adjust the humidity. I researched this pretty hard and it seemed like this would be the best bang for the buck and so far it is. For 43 bucks and free shipping you can't beat it. I'll do a follow-up in a few months, but so far so good. It's got my blessing.

Who knew humidifiers could be pretty? This one is as much of a decorative addition as it is functional.

It is an excellent humidifier. Though it has not eliminated all the dryness, it has reduced need for liquid tears during the night. The tank holds just a little over 12 hours worth of water, so a 24 hour period requires 2 refills. The weight makes it easy to carry. If it held more water, it would be harder to transport to the water supply. It is also easy to clean, assemble, work, and has a multitude of features.

The most unexpected benefit is the night light. It is a soft light that morphs from turquoise to sapphire blue every few seconds, takes a second to go black, and starts again. It illuminates the water in the tank and it is almost like looking at a softly lit aquarium. It is very peaceful and serene. Also it is very silent and works beautifully.

I liked this machine so much, I bought a second one for another room.

I bought the GE ADER65LN Dehumidifier after two other brands failed a few months after their warrenty expired. I had an LG that had its' compressor fail. Repair costs were almost as much as a new one. So I scraped it and bought a Kenmore at Sears. That one lasted as about as long as the LG with another compressor failure. When I looked inside the cabinet I found the Kenmore was made by LG.

I then researched Consumer Reports and online reviews for the most reliable and best operating dehumidifier. The GE was rated the best so I bought one last year. I went to use it this May and guess what? It didn't work. I checked the evaporator coil and it was not getting cold. This time I was still under warrenty so I took it into the dealer for repair. I got a call back and was told the the compressor was bad. Big surprise! GE is giving me a rebate coupon for the price I payed for the unit. I must buy another GE dehumidifier and send a copy of the invoice and the coupon to get my money back.

I'm a graduate engineer that knows a dehumidier is not "rocket science". The reliability of the LG, Kenmore (LG) and GE is terrible. I had a Fedders dehumidifier for 25 years and only replaced it because I needed more capacity. Never had one problem with Fedders, but it was made in the USA!

Update April 30, 2013 I'm now on my THIRD GE 65 pint Dehumidifier Failure!!! In June 2012 I had the second dehumidifier fail the same as the first. I again carried it back to the dealer's service department and they confirmed the compressor was dead. I received another voucher to send in AFTER I purchased the third GE 65 pint dehumidifier. That one lasted all Summer of 2012. I put the unit away for the winter and just took it out today to see if it still worked before the humidity increased during the Summer. Guess what? It doesn't work! I ran the unit for 4 hours in a 70 F Basement room with 60 RH. I checked the evaporator coils and they are not getting cold. The compressor is running and feels hot. I'm guessing the refrigerant has leaked out. I'm taking it in again to the service department, but this is the last time. These China made units are JUNK!

This top rated dehumidifier worked as reviewed in a consumer magazine review, I bought it based on that glowing review. i took it out of the box and read the instructions ,and shortly it was up and running in no time. running in my damp humid basement, i decided not to hook a hose to the drain until i could see how much water could be extracted,It was running a little over 2 hours and went to check it and that large tank was more than half full already so i emptied it and connected a hose to the unit and the other to a floor drain. It is a quiet unit and would recommend this unit, Gman.

I took a chance when I bought this unit a year ago based upon brand name. I should have known better. After only one year, the compressor has failed. Good luck trying to find someone to repair it. The Company was of great help with this by telling me to look in the yellow pages!!!

Honest reviews on GE ADER65LP 65 Pint Dehumidifier with 3 Fan Speeds, 195 CFM Air

I bought this on the basis of its high rating in a Consumer Reports review of dehumidifiers. I'm not happy with my purchase or with CR. I've had this running in my moderately humid finished basement for two summers. I give it one star because it still runs and dehumidifies. Barely. It can't get the humidity below 65%, and it is not a damp basement.

The bucket shut off switch no longer works. I drain with a hose so this is not a problem but if I was using the bucket I would not go off and leave it running.

The unit runs continuously, never shuts off. If you set it for interval (2 or 4 hours) it will run that long and shut down. It won't come back on as it should.

The folks at CR ought to put one in their basement for two years and then review it.

Based upon what I've read in various places, plus my and my Dad's experience with a number of these Made in China junkers, avoid them they are not a good purchase. They are all made by LG, so the brand does not make a difference.

Next time I will bite the bullet and buy a much more expensive Aprilaire or Sonoma Made in USA and highly rated.

Just as an aside, as Consumer reports has gotten bigger and bigger, it's reports on just about everything have become more subjective and less useful. Now instead of providing useful information for making good purchasing decisions, it drives consumption it really should be called Consumer Lust. And I'm not biased, either!

I agree with several people who begrudge giving the unit more than 3 stars if even that many. I too was very pleased with the unit when I first bought it. It took the humidity down in less than 24 hours, entire lower level. I thought wow this is great. It continued to do the job for several months.....a great machine. But.....as one reviewer noted the unit will heat up the area, but I thought that was to be expected since you have to draw air over 'cool' coils to get the humidity out; but it was warm. As another reviewer noted the unit worked when it did and then it 'died'.....yep mine too. It now does not take the humidity out and I do not know why it stopped? No warning. It worked and then all of a sudden it does not any more? As another reviewer noted GE will honor the 1 year warranty but......I have to buy a new unit and then send in a rebate form to get reimbursed. But does it cover taxes? shipping? etc.... I am led to believe they WILL NOT. This is very disappointing. According to what was written in the owners manual if a unit was bad they would ship you a new one. Not anymore....all the burden is now on the owner and still does not get all the money 'refunded' so to speak. I'm not sure what I am going to do? Even Consumers Report rated this unit as a best buy and a top unit but this does not speak well for GE. By the way the unit is made in China....Hmmmmmmmm. Whatever happened to American made from an American company?

We bought our humidifier two months ago and have already gone through two filters. Despite the fact that we change the water in our humidifier daily, the filter quickly start smelling very moldy. It also seem to disintegrate rather quickly.

I'm happy with the Hamilton Beach humidifier, but wish that the filters lasted a little longer.

If you leave the humidifer running after the tank has emptied until the filter is dry dry DRY (i.e., the humidity has dropped down), the filter will last and last. If you don't let it dry, but keep filling the tank with water, the filter gets really skanky really quickly. I learned the hard way until I read one of the reviews on this site. Have run it for over a month now with no smell. Filter is great.

I LOVE this humidifier because I can pop the parts in the dishwasher. I can get it CLEAN easily. Never found another humidifier that you can do this with.

Who cares if the humidistat works exactly? It tells me if the humidity is high or low, and that's all that matters.

It is indeed a BEAR to close the tank tightly, but we run it fine just closing it as tight as we can. Have never had a leakage problem.

Have tried many other kinds, and this does the job the best. Too bad it has been discontinued... I wanted to get one for my 87-year-old parents, since it is the easiest and best I have ever used.

Just a warning to those of you who are like me and aren't the most meticulous keepers of humidifiers: the large filter grows mold very easily. A previous reviewer noted that you should keep the filter wet, but in my experience that just grows mold. I've had to toss 2 filters for that reason. At this point, I've switched to Ultrasonic humidifiers because I'm afraid to use the previously moldy cool mist one (esp with the dusty fan).

Honest reviews on Hamilton Beach 05910 TrueAir Cool Mist Humidifier Replacement

We purchased a Hamilton Beach cool mist humidifier for our daughter. We go through one filter/month. The filters are not sold in any locals stores and we can only buy them on Amazon. We usually have to purchase (6) at a time because the filters smell moldy after 3-4 weeks. Now the price has jumped from $6.99/filter to $15/filter. We are disappointed with the product and it's permformance.

The filters last us all winter. The trick for us is to keep it wet...do not let the tray go dry. Vacuum the vents once a week. Our son bought a non-filtered humidifier that left white residue (lime, calcium) on his floor near the unit. This model is worth the [money] per year for that reason.

After returning a much more expensive product with all of the bells and whistles and a similar product by Evenflo, I did a lot of research on which playard would be best for us. We had no use for the changing tables attached to many of them, and wanted one that would allow us to pack the bassinet into the carry bag for travel. Many of them do not allow you to do this. This one is serving us quite well. It is easy to put up and take down--much easier than the Evenflo or Baby Trend ones. The bassinet just snaps on the sides and doesn't require a lot of metal bars, like others do. There are also buttons on each side to release them for folding, which I find easier than the things you have to push from underneath and can't even see. I would only go with Graco. Also, the padding is a bit softer than these other brands. It's still not really comfortable for our baby, but I just put a blanket between the pad and the sheet, and he seems to sleep fine. This is where I take off a star. I don't know why manufacturers think that a baby wants to sleep on a piece of cardboard. Overall, I have no complaints, and find this product to be well worth the price.

Three pack and plays from different companies. This one is by FAR the better one. Bonus: It cost the least. Pros: easy to setup, easy to pack up, very sturdy, fairly light and seemingly the most comfortable. Cons: I haven't found one in 21 months despite my daughters hard work to find a flaw.

Best Deals for Graco Pack 'N Play Playard with Bassinet

We aren't positive if we want our baby to sleep with us for the first little while, which is why we got this pack n play with the built in bassinet. We don't need a full changing table or any of the other bells and whistles the more expensive pack n plays come with, so this was just what we needed. It's small enough to fit through our doors and easy to move around as it has two wheels on one side of the unit. It was super easy to set up. I am 9 months pregnant and I assembled it all by myself. It is great, and I'm so happy with our purchase. The price is sweet too! This will get plenty of use after our baby is big enough to play IN it too!

**update 8 months later**

Our baby slept in this bassinet for the first 4 months of her life. She loved it and so did we. It was great having her so close by and the bassinet isn't so huge that it takes up a ton of room. Also easy to set up and put away. Love this product and will be using it again with our next one!

Honest reviews on Graco Pack 'N Play Playard with Bassinet

These Graco Pack N Plays are great. We just bought our 2nd and 3rd ones as grandparents. This newer model is much easier to set up and much easier to take apart with the big release buttons on each of the 4 sides. Don't tell the younger generation but these are very much like the playpens of years ago ... yes, I know ... playpens are out these days as this generation of parents wants to give their kids freedom to move around and go where they want :-) Back to the product: the value for the price is outstanding. These Pack N Plays seem to last forever. Graco Pack N Play with Bassinet The write up ought to say that sheet is no longer included.

Graco makes great products, but this one was not up to par. The main problem was that this particular Pack 'n Play doesn't have the four corner tabs that the floor sort of snaps into. When our very petite daughter would stand at the edge, her weight would cause the floor to slip and she would slowly drop a few inches down. Life threatening? No. But it was not very stable. I assumed all Pack n' Play products had the corner tabs that make for a secure floor. We ended up purchasing another Graco model and it has been perfect.

I've owned other humidifiers and the benefit of this one is it's easy to use and best of all, easy to clean and maintain. There are no filters that gunk up, you don't have to do a regular 'white vinegar' soaking to clean.

I read some of the other reviews and can only conclude those persons weren't using it correctly. It does a pretty good job humidifying and it's not possible for it to leak if you put it together correctly. It is a little on the loud side but all humidifiers make noise. This is not by far the noisiest or quietest, but bang-for-the-buck wise, it's a good deal.

I actually bought this because some of the reviews say it was loud. We run loud humidifiers to combat traffic noise in our bedrooms. This sucker is QUIET. You can hear a mouse fart with this thing on.

Other than that it works like it's supposed to. We kept it as a humidifier because it works so well for that and we just use the loud ones for noise.

I've had this humidifier for a year now...it works great---no leaks, no issues with the reset light (it only goes on when out of water). I put the water in at night, wait 3 min. for the unit to fill, then turn it on. Yes, the unit does make some bubbling sounds, but it isn't too loud and doesn't bother anyone in our family. In the a.m. the reset light is on because all the water has been used. Then, we start the whole process over again. I would definately buy this again.

Honest reviews on HM5082-U Warm Mist Humidifier

I bought this through the Holms website. I got very disappointed by this noisy unit. This is the first time I use warm mist humidifier. At the beginning, it worked fine, not too much noise. After around 20 mins, some 'knock, knock' noise came out and lasted forever as long as I kept it on. I don't know it is because I got a damage unit or it is the way it performs. So disappointed.

I got this unit on a special deal for $12 including shipping. It worked quite well until the reset button came on. And here's the deal -once the reset button comes on, be prepared to waste an hour (or more) getting it to come on again.

To give you an idea of what I'm referring to, here are the exact user manual instructions (for what to do when the reset light comes on):

"RESET PROCEDURE

NOTE: When the water tank is empty and the water in the Heating Chamber is almost empty, the Automatic Shut off will activate. The RESET Light will illuminate and the unit will not operate again until you refill the water tank and reset the humidifier.

1. Turn the power knob to RESET.

2. Unplug the unit.

3. Remove and refill the water tank, being sure to follow the Daily Maintenance Instructions. Replace the tank onto the base.

4. Wait 15 minutes for the Automatic Shut-Off to reset.

5. After the 15 minutes, plug in the unit and turn the Power Knob, to HIGH. The RESET light should now be off (if not repeat steps 1-5). In about 10 minutes, the humidifier will begin to produce moisture.

If the reset light is still on at this point, and the unit does not begin to produce moisture within a few minutes, then repeat steps 1-5."

Even THIS much would be a pain IF it worked as described. However, what you're actually doing is following the instructions above, watching the RESET button immediately come back on (unplugging and waiting another 15 minutes) and trying it all over again. I've been trying for TWO DAYS to get the reset button to shut off.

To my surprise, the instructions advise to run the washable parts through the dishwasher DAILY (!!!!). To give it a good cleaning, I left he knob on "RESET," unplugged it, took the whole thing apart, scrubbed the heating element, cleaned the entire inside of the unit, changed the water in the tank, made sure the knob was still on "RESET," plugged the unit back in and turned the knob to "HIGH." Guess what? THE RESET BUTTON IS STILL ON!!!!!!

At this point, I've spent 4 hours using it and thre DAYS trying to get it to work.

DO NOT BUY!!!

Purchased this as my first "real" humidor. Finish and built is nice. One problem was that the hygrometer it came with didn't work. I followed the instructions on how to calibrate it but the needle never moved and it seemed pretty cheaply-made overall. It would also be nice if this came with a cedar divider or two to separate your collection. Otherwise, a good humidor for the price, especially as someone's first.

As others have mentioned, this humidor is great for the occasional smoker. The hygrometer was worthless, but I recommend you invest in a digital hygrometer anyway. With just a little tinkering I was able to consistently maintain this humidor at 70/70.

I don't know why I had this problem, and I'm not sure I can blame the filter because it seems like I've used this brand before without this happening. Still, I had to change this filter out after about a week of using it only at night because of the mold growth. Maybe I did something wrong with the unit. I'm just saying I was quite disappointed that I didn't get longer use out of it when in the past it seems like I wouldn't see mold for maybe a month. I don't plan to buy this brand again.
