I then researched Consumer Reports and online reviews for the most reliable and best operating dehumidifier. The GE was rated the best so I bought one last year. I went to use it this May and guess what? It didn't work. I checked the evaporator coil and it was not getting cold. This time I was still under warrenty so I took it into the dealer for repair. I got a call back and was told the the compressor was bad. Big surprise! GE is giving me a rebate coupon for the price I payed for the unit. I must buy another GE dehumidifier and send a copy of the invoice and the coupon to get my money back.
I'm a graduate engineer that knows a dehumidier is not "rocket science". The reliability of the LG, Kenmore (LG) and GE is terrible. I had a Fedders dehumidifier for 25 years and only replaced it because I needed more capacity. Never had one problem with Fedders, but it was made in the USA!
Update April 30, 2013 I'm now on my THIRD GE 65 pint Dehumidifier Failure!!! In June 2012 I had the second dehumidifier fail the same as the first. I again carried it back to the dealer's service department and they confirmed the compressor was dead. I received another voucher to send in AFTER I purchased the third GE 65 pint dehumidifier. That one lasted all Summer of 2012. I put the unit away for the winter and just took it out today to see if it still worked before the humidity increased during the Summer. Guess what? It doesn't work! I ran the unit for 4 hours in a 70 F Basement room with 60 RH. I checked the evaporator coils and they are not getting cold. The compressor is running and feels hot. I'm guessing the refrigerant has leaked out. I'm taking it in again to the service department, but this is the last time. These China made units are JUNK!

This top rated dehumidifier worked as reviewed in a consumer magazine review, I bought it based on that glowing review. i took it out of the box and read the instructions ,and shortly it was up and running in no time. running in my damp humid basement, i decided not to hook a hose to the drain until i could see how much water could be extracted,It was running a little over 2 hours and went to check it and that large tank was more than half full already so i emptied it and connected a hose to the unit and the other to a floor drain. It is a quiet unit and would recommend this unit, Gman.Best Deals for GE ADER65LP 65 Pint Dehumidifier with 3 Fan Speeds, 195 CFM Air
I took a chance when I bought this unit a year ago based upon brand name. I should have known better. After only one year, the compressor has failed. Good luck trying to find someone to repair it. The Company was of great help with this by telling me to look in the yellow pages!!!Honest reviews on GE ADER65LP 65 Pint Dehumidifier with 3 Fan Speeds, 195 CFM Air
I bought this on the basis of its high rating in a Consumer Reports review of dehumidifiers. I'm not happy with my purchase or with CR. I've had this running in my moderately humid finished basement for two summers. I give it one star because it still runs and dehumidifies. Barely. It can't get the humidity below 65%, and it is not a damp basement. The bucket shut off switch no longer works. I drain with a hose so this is not a problem but if I was using the bucket I would not go off and leave it running.
The unit runs continuously, never shuts off. If you set it for interval (2 or 4 hours) it will run that long and shut down. It won't come back on as it should.
The folks at CR ought to put one in their basement for two years and then review it.
Based upon what I've read in various places, plus my and my Dad's experience with a number of these Made in China junkers, avoid them they are not a good purchase. They are all made by LG, so the brand does not make a difference.
Next time I will bite the bullet and buy a much more expensive Aprilaire or Sonoma Made in USA and highly rated.
Just as an aside, as Consumer reports has gotten bigger and bigger, it's reports on just about everything have become more subjective and less useful. Now instead of providing useful information for making good purchasing decisions, it drives consumption it really should be called Consumer Lust. And I'm not biased, either!
