Honeywell QuietCare 3-Gallon UV Tower Humidifier, HCM-300T Review

When I first started looking for a humidifier (my wife's asthma tended to flare up in coughing fits when the humidity dropped), I realized that there seemed to be no such thing as a "perfect humidifier"! After reading through as many reviews as possible, I realized that I wanted one that needed minimal cleaning, was pretty easy to fill, wasn't too loud and did a job of raising the humidity for a fairly large area (about 1200 sq.ft) without leading to other side effects (micro dust, mold and bacteria proliferation etc.). After ruling out "warm mist humidifiers" due to the heavy cleaning needs, "ultrasonic humidifiers" due to the micro dust generation, and "in line humidifiers" due to the intensive upfront installation labor requirements, I settled on the "cool mist" HCM-300T. It promised quiet operation, cleaning needs of only once a month (the UV light is supposed to reduce 99% of bacteria growth) and the capability to humidify "medium to large" areas as for the filling, I had come to the conclusion that no portable humidifier would help that daily chore!

The HCM-300T worked pretty well for the first 3 weeks wife loved it since her sleep was much better, without any coughing whatsoever. However, given the absence of a built-in hygrometer, I could never figure out exactly how much of the work was being done by the HCM and how much by Mother Nature. Also, filling the water container every night turned out to be quite the juggling experience since it hasn't been designed to stand upright on its own ....in other words, you are going to have to be standing right beside it, holding it in position! On the positive side, the water seemed to stay fresh without any mold/bacteria, even though I didn't engage in any cleaning during the 3 weeks. However, during Week 4, while carrying the water container back after a refill, the lid came off (unfortunately it has been designed such that the handle of the water container is on the lid!) and the container fell down into the tub with a thud, waking up my worried wife! On further inspection, I didn't notice any leaks, so having reassured my wife that I hadn't broken any bones, I refilled the container, gingerly carrying it back to the base unit. To my dismay, when the unit was switched on, water started spraying out of the bottom of the unit through the slots that normally cool moist air flows through and soon I had water all over the carpeting. Not sure whether this was triggered by the fall, but the water leakage never stopped from then on. Needless to say I had to return the unit!!

Based on this experience, I have added three more items to my "must-have" list: a built in hygrometer (that way I can actually judge performance on those really dry days), a rugged water container (so it can outlast the tumbles that I am certain it will be taking!) and a unit that has its air outflow from the top rather than the bottom, making sure that water doesn't leak out due to gravity. Wish me luck!!

We bought two of these in fall 06. After two months use, one of the units had a fan failure. It ran noisily for a few days prior to the failure, then ground to a halt. I called Kaz's customer service (the Honeywell name is licensed), and they agreed to send me a new one free. After five months use, the second unit failed in exactly the same way. This time, customer service required me to pay $20 for a new one to be shipped, and they required in each case the return of the defective one at my cost for shipping. They are simply NOT durable! We now have one in service, with the other as a backup since we anticipate a product failure this winter. One other thing: they are awkward to fill. The water chamber has a curved bottom so it will not sit flat in your sink. You have to balance it with one hand, and operate the faucet and put on the lid with the other. This design defect is SO obvious it makes you wonder how function followed form in product design. You also need a fairly deep sink or a tall spigot to fill it without tipping it and spilling. The filling problem is aggravating since you need to fill it at least twice daily. As far as ability to humidify, it works reasonably well, and is fairly quiet. But I wouldn't recommend this unit at all after living with it.

The only positive thing I can say about this humidifier is that it looks better than those big boxy ones. Oh, and I guess the fact that ours hasn't leaked on the floor (like some other reviewers have had) could be considered a positive. It usually doesn't even last a whole night before running out of water and it's not like I live in the desert...our house can't be THAT dry. Yet, the room is still dry and we still wake up with sore throats and dry skin. We've had other humidifiers that worked fine, and I'm noticing that those usually shot the humidified air out the top (you know...into the air!). This one shoots the humidified air out near the floor, so it would take 3 days for the room to fill with humid air. The thing rarely shuts off unless the outside air is more humid on that particular day. Speaking of shutting off...doesn't this thing have an automatic shut off when it runs out of water?? Ours NEVER shuts off, so when it runs out of water the fan dries up the filter (which you aren't supposed to do). So every night I have to refill the tank and re-soak the filter (which you're also not supposed to do, but I'm not putting in a new $10 filter every night). We haven't been bothered by the noise...it's what you'd expect from any other fan. It's just a constant hum that we kind of like since it drowns out other outside noises.

Honest reviews on Honeywell QuietCare 3-Gallon UV Tower Humidifier, HCM-300T

After reading the previous reviewer's comments I was quite surprised. This humidifier changed the humidity in my entire 1 bedroom apartment from 48% to 60% in less than 1 hour. It only uses 1/2 of the tank of water over a 15-hr period. I didn't experience a browning tank or filter, although I filled the tank with filtered water purposefully so it wouldn't have to be cleaned as often. I hardly notice it when it cycles on because it is so quiet. It does cycle on and off but usually stays on for about 60-90 min and then off for the same amount of time. Perhaps the last reviewer didn't notice a change in humidity because his room was already at 60% this is the upper limit the humidifier can reach according to the manufacturer. There are no wet spots on my floor, no condensation on the windows, and no white dust from metals in the water vapor. The only thing I was a little disappointed about is that if the fan is facing you, it can make you a little chilly, but not enough to really bother me. It was very easy to set up, and I love that it doesn't look like an awkward box sitting in the middle of the room. Would definitely recommend it without reservation.

Pros

Humidity increased 10% all over the room

Big tank.

Large hole to fill tank.

Small footprint

No dust

Looks good compared to most.

Great price for such a big improvement.

Cons

Filter needed changing within 1 month.

Breeze from fan is quite chilly, but we have it facing a direction away from seating area.

Putting the tank back can be a little cumbersome. It's easier if it is on a low surface.

Awkward to fill tank because it has a slanted top, you either have to prop it up or hold it the whole time.

We have tried 10+ humidifiers and nothing could compete with this, even a $200+ humidifier. Considering how much better the house feels it was worth every penny plus more.

This filter seems to not wick the water throughout its surface as well as the other models I have used. The top part gets dry after a while, even when there is water still in the bottom compartment of the humidifier.

Many retailers consider this and similar items to be seasonal (winter-early spring). I prefer to have replacement wicks available at the beginning of the heating season. I've waited until December to purchase these wick only to find them out of stock until the fall of the new year!! It's great to have the option of buying them any time of the year1!!!!!

Not really a humidifer at all. Yes it's a diffuser but it does not humidify the air, which is it's first claim to fame and the reason I bought it. Water sits in a well with a sponge and a fan blows the water that soaks up into the sponge. Had I known this and that it was shipping directly from China, I would have ordered from another on-line place, where it was much cheaper. Don't buy if you want a humidifer.

I have been using my Brod & Taylor folding proofer for about a Month. I didn't expect it to be one of those tools I couldn't live without, but it is. Now that we are moving into the cool months here in the Midwest, my kitchen is around 63F in the morning. I prepare my dough or preferment the night before and it is perfectly bubbling away at the perfect temperature when I get up. I love the way I can set my temperature for the desired dough temperature on a preferment or dough and keep an eye on it through the clear window on top.

I bake artisan style breads and sourdough all the time. This is quickly becoming a tool I couldn't do without.

My wife likes that it easily folds and is stored in a cabinet within a few easy seconds. She also likes to make yogurt in it with the stable temperature setting at 115F.

Highly recommend this product.

I purchased this about a month ago. I'm long time bread baker and I'm good at it. But even bread won't forgive uneven rising temps, no humidity, etc. It will rise, but not as perfectly as you'd like.

No more rigging the microwave with cups of hot water and all the other things I've used.

This baby works . No need to cover the bread, water in the proofer pan gives the right amount of humidity. Every loaf rises consistently. Everything I've made is either a little bit better or a lot better. It's bigger than you think. I oil the Kitchenaid bowl and plunk it in there. One less thing to clean. Plenty of room for multiple loaves. I have made yoghurt . I like the Greek style. I can get it thick without turning tart in the proofer. I haven't tried it for chocolate yet.

And it folds flat and tucks away nicely. It's really good for getting dough that has been refrigerated up yto temp.

If you love to bake really great bread, sticky buns, cinnamon rolls, you'll wonder how how ever got along without this. Start kissing up to Santa right now !

First off, there are no other "portable proofing ovens". At least not that I can find.

Second, without it I wouldn't be baking bread except at Christmas. We live in a centrally heated home, like the vast majority of people in the industrialized world and there just isn't a place in our house to have 75 to 80 degrees at high humidity. And it seems foolish to raise the house temperature just to raise bread. Sure, heat the oven to 200 and hope it works. Turn on the bathroom heater and hold the bathroom for four hours at 80 degrees and don't forget to keep the humidifier going. And don't forget the eighty quart picnic cooler with the boiling water in the bottom. Sure, these ideas all work. I build furniture as a hobby, I could build a proofing oven. And store it in the attic.

Enter the Brod & Taylor Folding Proofer. I now bake all our bread. When I set up for baking in our kitchen setting up the proofer is just one of the number of parts to my routine. It works just as advertised.

If you want successful, repeatable, baking, buy one. There is a saying among wood workers: "buy a good tool and you cry when you buy it, buy a cheap tool and cry every time you use it". This item is like a good, no, great tool.

Thanks to Brod & Taylor for making my life better.

Honest reviews on Folding Bread Proofer and Yogurt Maker

I've only used this three times now so I won't speak to it's durability, but it does what it's suposed to do well. Be warned the bottom of this throws off a lot of heat. I set it on a butcher block the first time and it was so hot it shrank the wood and opened up a glue joint. It took me two days to fix the damage. I strongly feel that it would even warp laminate. Unless you have granite counters I would only put this on your heat proof stove top.

I bought this proofer primarily for its advertised use in making yogurt at home. I had never made yogurt before and didn't want to hassle with the small jars or lack of temperature control issues that accompany standard yogurt makers (according to reviews I have read). I have made two batches of yogurt (1 gallon each using 4 1-quart mason jars) and all I can say is "Wow". Our favorite use for the yogurt is to make frozen smoothies using either frozen strawberries or blueberries, but it is also an awesome treat when mixed with a bit of granola and honey. This proofer is the perfect piece of equipment for experts and novices alike. I am 100% pleased with my purchase. My wife and I are actually contemplating making our own whole grain breads as well (use it to its full potential and all that).

I bought this unit; installed it , and it didn't work. Turns out that i needed a 120v solenoid, not 24v. The units look identical. Make sure you check your specs on your original solenoid. I 'burned out' the 24v unit I had purchased. This is for a generalaire humidifier.

I seem to go through these valve every year or two. I'm not sure if it's my water or what. I have friends with the same solenoids that are a decade old...

I hate to give less than 5 stars because I feel like this is a robust product, but maybe there are others out there that have a similar issue.

Best Deals for Generalaire 990-53 Humidifier Solenoid Valve

In as many as 12 years with my Bryant furnace, my general humidifier uses this solenoid to control the water, I'm on the third one which has either burned out or plugged up so bad I found it easier to replace. Much to expensive for what it does, but there aren't to many choices on the market. I guess it's failed more than my furnace which has never had a service issue thus far. Not a good track record for this valve.

Honest reviews on Generalaire 990-53 Humidifier Solenoid Valve

You will have to turn the valve 180 degree to fit into the Honeywell humidifier. I used this to replace the original valve that went always open. It turned on and off as expected.

We purchased this humidifier after receiving a different unit from Amazon a few weeks earlier. My daughters liked it so much I decided to get another one for my son's room. Unfortunately the same model wasn't available so we went with this model from Hunter.

Pros: The Hunter model has a larger water tank and variable humidification setting. At a mid-line setting we get two nights out of one tank of water.

Cons: Unlike the smaller/cheaper unit we purchased a few weeks earlier the Hunter unit has no means of using any type of aromatherapy with the mist to help when the kids have breathing troubles (stuffy noses, chest congestion). It also does not have a night-light feature like some others. This may not be a con for most.

The Hunter unit is quiet and works well. Compared to any local stores the price from Amazon was fantastic and makes this well worth the purchase price.

We wanted a small humidifier for our bedroom, and this one fits the bill perfectly. Since it is ultrasonic, it is extremely quiet. It is small, but the tank holds enough water to humidify for at least two nights. It really makes the difference to prevent sore, dry throats to have this running every night!

I purchased this humidifier for the master bedroom of our home. The winters can wreak havoc on our sinuses & dry our skin our. This mighty machine puts out a considerable amount of moisture & I only have it set on the lowest possible setting right now. It puts out the right amount of moisture to make the room comfortable. The tank is smaller than the other humidifiers that I currently have in the house, but I still only have to fill the tank about every 2 days. Would highly recommend this product. I love that there in not a filter to clean.

Honest reviews on Hunter 31009 Microban Ultrasonic Small Room Humidifier

This humidifier gets water EVERYWHERE!!!!! My carpet was completely soaked after the first time I used it. I checked for leaks, and found none. It's just from the mist itself!!!! I had it turned on medium the first night, so I lowered it the next night, same result. Then, less than a week after I started using it, the red light was coming on indicating an empty tank. It was clearly over halfway full! I read the owner's manual before I ever used it. It's supposed to be very simple. Too bad it doesn't work properly. I'm returning it.

The Venta humidifier is quiet, clean and maintenance free but the box only lasted 500 hours instead of the claimed 1000 hours. Perhaps the water on my block is not clean.

I bought a Venta air humidifier in the Winter 2007/08 and we are very much satisfied with it. However, depending on the frequence you use it, you have to change from time to time the filter. As we are using it 24/7 in the heating period, it must be replaced all 2-3 month. Unfortunately, in the shop where we bought the air humidifier (bed, bath & beyond) we could not buy the filters anymore. But with Amazon we could get them and even much cheeper as in the shop and the filters were delivered within a few days

Had to buy this filter box to replace one that was a little over a year old and used mostly overnight, every night. No problems to report with the filter replacement box itself at all. However, the first one sent to me was cracked in a few places, probably during shipping by FedEx since the outer shipping box looked like it was crushed a little. I called the company and they immediately sent me a replacement filter box at no charge and no questions asked. Great customer service!

Honest reviews on Gac-Vencor Inc Maintenance Free Box 1090036 Humidifier Chemical

I've had the Venta Sonic 370 for a year now, and i think i've had to return it 2xs. I love that it's quiet and pumps out a ton of moisture. The white box is delicate and like other reviewers said, it does not last that long. I think I got a replacement machine from Venta, and the thing stopped working within a month of usage. It turned on, but slowly eked out a thin amount of moisture. Then it just stopped. So i figured, "ok, one more time i'll buy a new filter and see if that's the culprit." If not, i was going to throw it out. My other Vick's humidifier for $32 works just fine, so i would have been sorry to see the Venta go, but hey, i'm not spending $65 a season just to keep it going. So...now that this product has it's problems, but when it's working, it's really good i think.

I have owned the venta sonic humidifier for over one year and have had problems with the filters. The first one broke after one month and venta replaced it for free. Now the one i bought at amazon.com worked for onlly two weeks and the broke. When it works the humidifier is great however, I can't keep spending this much money for filters that don't last.
