Review of XiKar Cigar Travel Case

Our XiKar Cigar Travel Case arrived promptly and looked just like the photos. I had read that it sealed so well that it was a little difficult to open sometimes. I also read a review that said prying it open with a quarter worked wonders. I subsequently read that after an airplane flight it is even harder to open and obviously ours was shipped via air.

We poked, we prodded, we broke finger nails. We followed one suggestion of leaving it in a hot car I think you have to leave it there for a day or two, just just 2-3 hours.

We finally worked the hinge loose about 2 notches which allowed enough flex at the hinge end to get a thin screw driver wedged in and we worked that around, slowly, scratching it once or twice and then... a small WHOOSH, little pressure equalization. A few more inches of prying and it opened.

All of this could have been avoided had the manufacturer put a piece of cardboard or something along the seal before shipping.

Finally we did get it open. And we will NOT travel by plane with it. Sorry, it's too much of a nuisance.

But once opened it was just as represented. We're not major cigar hobbyists so I have no idea whether it will maintain exactly 70% humidity for long periods of time. But based on the quality, look and feel, I am very confident it will be excellent for our purposes. And what are our purposes to have a small sturdy case that we can throw in a suitcase when we DRIVE (not fly) on a short vacation. It would also be great for someone who just wants a sturdy case for a few cigars and doesn't necessarily want to display it. For the price you can't beat it.

The construction seems excellent and all in all, after the challenge of opening it, we're more than pleased with our purchase.

I bought this for my father-in-law who travels several times a year for several weeks. I really liked this humidor for several reasons 1. it's extremely lightweight. While adding cigars will of course add to the weight, the case itself won't weigh down your luggage. 2 I like the foam inserts to keep the cigars separate. 3 I LOVE that there is a humidifcation product in the lid. No having to add or purchase any extra pieces. Overall it's great. One reviewer commented to help break the airtight seal that you pinch the lid and case together works great when you do that. I feel this will last for many years.

Amazing just amazing brought back cigars that I thought had no hope of ever being in smoking condition again well worth the money

Honest reviews on XiKar Cigar Travel Case

I received the humidor and it is very well built and airtight. I did not have the problem opening it that some reviewers had. The only reason that it isn't 5 stars is because there should be something covering the top layer of cigars so that the humidifier doesn't ruin them.

We needed an item to humidify our very, very dry wood stove heated home. This seemed like the right tool for the job even though it was a bit pricey. It has been somewhat effective with respect to adding some moisture to the air. Well made, but would be more enthusiastic if hadn't cost quite so much.

Fits perfect on my Hearthstone Clydesdale insert. Blends in well also. My shelf dimension is five & a quarter inches & it fits perfectly, no overhang. A little expensive but Made in America providing jobs for Americans, I like that. The only thing that surprised me was that you're advised to not use the water for consumption, strictly for putting humidity in the air. Guess I'll have to stick with the microwave for my tea.

Would totally recommend this to anyone who has a small stove. Works really good......Doesn't look like a half kettle when it's on the stove.

The Woodeze 2 quart half kettle is perfect for fireplace inserts. It has a large water capacity and sits perfectly on my Quadrafire Insert.

I AM USING THIS TO HUMIDIFY A LARGE CABINET TYPE HUMIDOR. IT IS A WELL MADE UNIT WITH EASY TO USE CONTROLS AND HAS HELPED ME TO SEASON THIS HUMIDOR AND KEEPS THE HUMIDITY EXACTLY WHERE YOU WANT IT. EASY TO SET UP AND VERY QUIET WHEN THE FANS ARE RUNNING. VERY HAPPY WITH THIS UNIT.

the one i bought is 10-11% off the correct humidity. i don't have to use a "salt" test to calibrate as i checked it against a Fluke 971 humidity meter (i am an HVAC contractor). the fluke meter also jives with two other hygrometers. the Hydra only gives you a little adjustment to their so called factory calibration. in my case it isn't enough to get it back to a correct number. i am increasing the set point to account for the lack of calibration. this is a pricey fan unit that sits atop some cheap floral sponge material. the concept is cool. the goods are cheap.

hope this helps

I have revised this review from a previous version.

I had initially given this unit 1 star, I have revised it up to 4 stars. I would have given it 5 stars, but the power plug for my unit arrived defective.

I was initially put off by the cheap construction and materials, as well as the kludgy method by which it is powered. The build quality is cheap, especially considering the price of this unit. It does not have the metal construction of the Moist-n-aire. The electronics are simple enough, so given the build quality and the simplicity of the device, I can't say that the price can be justified. Especially given that they call this their Commercial Series. The device is powered using a ribbon cable that is connected, on one end, to the box/unit, and on the other to an intermediate connector which allows for the standard DC plug to connect. Oddest power arrangement I have ever seen.

Given the build and design quality, I reserved my judgement until I had actually used it.

I plugged the unit in, and it fired up. Roughly 5 minutes later, it stopped working. As best as I could tell the DC power plug has stopped working, so I found another 12V 1ma DC power converter and plugged the unit in. It worked, and has worked ever since. I have a tall 2,000 cigar cabinet, and maxed out this unit does a really good job of sustaining 70% RH.

Before I fixed the unit, I ordered a Moist-n-Aire, but I am not rushing to replace this unit with the Moist-n-Aire just yet. I am going to see how it does in the longer run and keep the solid metal construction Moist-n-Aire as a backup.

Honest reviews on HYDRA-LG Commercial Series Electronic Humidifier

I have heard a lot of great things about the hydra lg. I already had a hydra sm in a 300 ct humidor and had no problems. The lg has been nothing but trouble though. I got it a month ago, for a 3,000 ct 16 cubit ft tower humidor, and it has not kept the humidity at all. The built in hygrometer is obviously wrong. It reads 75% rh when it is only 55% rh. I can't recalibrate it because the calibration knob is already turned all the way. So I can only make it read higher. Then today I checked the basin and it had mold in it. It really smelled. I have thousands of dollars worth of cigars and that could have been devastating. I contacted the manufacturer and they are sending me a new one. I don't know what I'm going to do in the mean time though. I can't not have a humidifier for a week. I am switching to humidity beads. They are very accurate and no mold. I hear you can even put them in the hydra in place of the foam. I might give this a try. In hind sight I wish I either paid more for a really nice electric humidifier like avello or just used beads in the first place.

Bought this from OVERSTOCK WAREHOUSE through Amazon, the delivery was prompt but when I setup the unit and let run I found out that the hygrometer is off by %15 and the knob as mentioned in the previous review only lets you adjust it 5 to %6. I have already requested a return from the seller and that service is to be seen.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE UNIT, and one more thing, there is no customer service for the Hydra products.

will update later......

BACKGROUND

I suffer from severe mold allergies and have dedicated a substantial amount of time and money to a several year trial and error process with quite a few air filtration and purification machines. Through the course of this, I have purchased and used extensively both the Air Oasis AO3000, EcoQuest's Vollara Fresh Air and their smaller Ecobox, IQ Air Healthpro Plus, RabbitAir BioGS, and the Honeywell 18155 SilentComfort. Now the latter 3 machines are more traditional HEPA based air filtration machines that filter impurities out of the air and neutralize oders with carbon fibers. The first two machines are more like purification/neutralization machines that use ozone technology they lack actual filtration capabilities. If you go to the bottom of this review, I make some recommendations on how to couple these two technologies (HEPA filtration and ozone purification) together to get a good result. Since I feel like I'm writing an infomercial right now, I'd like to take a moment and stress that I am only basing my findings on personal experience and the results I experiences. No scientific lab results and no specific quantifiable metrics were involved. However, I can assure you this review is real and if you check out my Amazon profile, you will see I am a serious reviewer and I'm a hard to please customer. I give a lot more negative reviews than positive ones and I give 5 stars very rarely.

EXPERIENCE WITH ECOQUEST VOLLARA FRESH AIR

My first ozone technology experiment was with the EcoQuest Vollara Fresh Air and also their smaller Ecobox unit. The Fresh Air unit is powerful and definately puts out a strong, sanitizing ozone effect wherever you place it. It neutralized mold and my allergies got much better within a day of using the unit. The problem is the ozone that is created really started to irritate my lungs and resulted in breathing problems. When I had friends visit, they loved it as first as well but also experienced similar breathing problems after running it all night. So I started to use the Fresh Air unit as more of a spot treatment when I knew I would be away for a few days or even overnight in an empty room with the door shut. For this purpose, it works great.

EXPERIENCE WITH AIR OASIS AO3000

But I didn't want to give up on the idea of using ozone to deal with mold in the air so I discovered Air Oasis which uses ozone but treats in with an additional process to reduce the final ozone output to a level that is within USDA/FDA guidelines. After the first night of using the AO3000, I woke up feeling great and breathing fine. In fact, I have been using it nonstop for over a week and I haven't had any problems. With this machine, you don't get the same strong fresh ozone smell that the Fresh Air unit creates. The AO3000 creates more of a neutral smell that makes the area smell almost like nothing, completely oderless. My mold allergies are much better and I can breathe fine with this unit. I would recommend not keeping it too close to you because I noticed that when I kept it right next to me at my desk, it made me a little lightheaded. So I placed it a bit further away and higher up and it worked great.

NEGATIVES OF AIR OASIS AO3000

As for negatives, I don't like the shape because it's easy to tip over. I would prefer they make this thing is more of a box form that you can set anywhere and not where about it getting knocked over, especially on a countertop. Also there is the high price. But if you've come this far to be looking at ozone utilizing air cleaning machines, then you've probably already come to the realization that all these machines are expensive.

FINAL RECOMMENDATION

Because these types of machines don't actually have air filtration/debris removal capabilities, they are limited in how much actual air purification they can do. This is why it's probably best to couple it with a machine with a proper Hepa filter. On the low end, you can go with a decently reviewed Honeywell unit or on the high end, you have IQ Air which is like the Ferrari of air cleaners. Now you might be thinking "Why don't I just buy an IQ Air machine which can serve as a stand alone air cleaner since they claim they filter pretty much everything including mold spores?". Well, that's exactly what I did and tried for a year and honestly, even the IQ Air doesn't do the trick when it comes to mold. Only after using the EcoQuest Fresh Air and the Air Oasis AO3000 did I notice substantial improvements in my mold allergies.

My wife and I purchased this air purifier to get rid of the musty smell in our 1850's home. We have a full basement and the 1st floor always is musty. It very quickly starts putting out clean smelling air. For us the air smelled too clean though, like someone just Lysol cleaned the whole 1st floor, but it kept that smell all the time. It was a little too clean smelling for us, so we moved it to the basement. Now the basement smells clean, and the mold isn't growing which has made the upper floors of the house smell neutral (yay!). Unless you really like a overly clean smell all the time I would not recommend this product for single rooms or even inside your house, but if you have a musty basement then this product is amazing.

I have this product for over a year. A year free from indoor allergies. A year without any colds, fly or other airborne infection.

When my friends come over, they are surprised not to scent the animals, but just clean air. I live with 3 dogs and two cats.

This is a cutting edge technology developed by NASA. This air purifier is energy efficient with attractive design.

I live in the country of Panama. I have a lot of dogs, 10 of which sleep inside at night and several of those sleep in my bedroom and at least two on my bed so therefore there's a lot of dog dander in my house. For a long time I had had continuous throat congestion I had to keep clearing my throat but it never did any good. A few months ago I paid $700-plus to a local person in Panama who imports and sells Air Oasis machines. I bought the Air Oasis 3000XGS (supposedly the most potent one) and a smaller one to use for my home office. Neither of them accomplished anything except that the big one emitted a "pleasant" smell from near it. But still no help with my throat congestion. My opinion is that the Air Oasis machines are a huge waste of money.

About two weeks ago I bought a TheraPure TPP240 at a local PriceSmart (Costco) for around $110, less than the price advertised on Amazon...but with 7% sales tax here, about the same price.

But since I've bought and started using the TheraPure TPP240, I don't have those problems. I have it in my very large bedroom (about 20x20) and run it only at night on high speed and I love the white noise it creates. With so many dogs sleeping in my bedroom scratching, whining from bad dreams, etc., I had to wear ear plugs in order to get a good sleep. Now I don't.

Other reviewers of the TheraPure have complained about the blue light emitted at night but I don't have a problem with that either. I don't have blackout drapes and I have a dusk-to-dawn security light outside my bedroom so my bedroom was never totally dark even before using the TPP240. I like to have a completely dark sleep environment, so I wear a sleep mask when I'm ready to doze off. Having some light in my bedroom is actually a benefit...when I need to get up to pee or when I need to let my dogs out during the night, I can remove my sleep mask and have enough light to move around safely.

The ONLY complaint I have about the TPP240 is that is doesn't have an auto-restart after a power failure. Here in Panama and especially at night we may have numerous power failures. Even if that power failure lasts for only a couple of seconds, the TheraPure does not restart. I always wake up when the "white noise" stops. I also run a dehumidifier in my house which does restart after a power failure. I do wish the manufacturers of the TheraPure would include that feature. Regardless, I LOVE wonderful this TheraPure air purifier!

So I repeat in my experience the Air Oasis machines are over-hyped and over-priced junk.

I bought this unit; installed it , and it didn't work. Turns out that i needed a 120v solenoid, not 24v. The units look identical. Make sure you check your specs on your original solenoid. I 'burned out' the 24v unit I had purchased. This is for a generalaire humidifier.

I seem to go through these valve every year or two. I'm not sure if it's my water or what. I have friends with the same solenoids that are a decade old...

I hate to give less than 5 stars because I feel like this is a robust product, but maybe there are others out there that have a similar issue.

Best Deals for Generalaire 990-53 Humidifier Solenoid Valve

In as many as 12 years with my Bryant furnace, my general humidifier uses this solenoid to control the water, I'm on the third one which has either burned out or plugged up so bad I found it easier to replace. Much to expensive for what it does, but there aren't to many choices on the market. I guess it's failed more than my furnace which has never had a service issue thus far. Not a good track record for this valve.

Honest reviews on Generalaire 990-53 Humidifier Solenoid Valve

You will have to turn the valve 180 degree to fit into the Honeywell humidifier. I used this to replace the original valve that went always open. It turned on and off as expected.

I've tried several solutions to reduce humidity in my 1400 ft3 basement. No water problems through the walls. The basement has a dirt floor. Starting basenent humidity (yes, I do own a humidistat) this winter averaged 70%. Using two 50 pint dehumidifiers, at seperate ends, the humidity has never been lower than 55%. This is with the units running 12 hours a day (they freeze up within 30min to an hour) in winter and constantly in summer. Current humidity with this unit is 50%. If you're handy. This unit is the most cost effective option I've found. I've read blogs where people are building their own for approximately 170.00 200.00 with no humidistat! The unit shipped to me in 2/3 days. The parts are well done for the purpose. The fan in the unit is all metal parts. The installation instructions are solid.
