Ok, I have owned this little guy for a little over a week now and cant comment on its longevity, but... it certainly seems to work well. I am a pack a day smoker and like clockwork I catch any cold my significant other gets within a day or two. She came down with something last week when I bought this plug in unit and she is now finally starting to get over her cold or whatever. I have yet to get sick! I am sure there could be other reasons for this but let me assure you that a robust immune system is not one of them! :)

Some people complain about these units.. saying there is low airflow through them. I'll let you in on a little secret.. it takes some time in contact with light to kill germs in the air. If the air moved too fast the germs would not have enough contact time with the light to die. Put the unit in an area where the air moves around it. Perhaps near a door or in a room with a ceiling fan that normally runs. If you put it in the corner of a room with dead air.. its going to purify the heck out of that corner.. :)

I placed the unit on a kill-a-watt meter tonight and it registered a constant draw of 9 watts. Thats pretty great as far as air purifiers are concerned. I have electronics that draw more than that when they are off. Costco has them 2 for $67 and Lowes has them for $39 ea (then you find one of the MANY coupons for Lowes like $10 off a $25 purchase.. exc).

The technology behind the units is a little questionable and I was not able to find links to the documented evidence of their effectiveness. They claim Harvard did test this product.. hope thats true but I would like to see the source of that claim posted somewhere. UV-C bulbs have been around for a long time, but for some reason they are just now showing up in this kind of a product with no real description as to why that is.

The bulbs only last one year and I cant find replacements locally (yet) so minus one star for that.. otherwise.. good job. Hope its for real. I went back to Lowes today to get another one and they were sold out.

UPDATE: Year and a half later, first bulb replacement (should have been done at the one year mark.. I guess). I took the opportunity to use a duster can and blow out all the dust that had built up in the units over 18 months of continuous use. Wiped down the outsides with Windex. Back in business.

I purchased one and used it in several rooms throughout the house. I did not notice much difference. I then put it in baby's room and within an hour it eliminated the diaper pail smell YAY!

I recently purchased a Germ Guardian for our home. I read about it in Prevention magazine and have always been steered right by them. So far, my husband and I have been "cold free" this winter. I ordered a second one and now have one upstairs and one downstairs. My husband complained that it was too noisy in the family room, so I had to move it to another room. I do not find it to be too noisy. I was so pleased that I bought one for my daughter's home.

Ive read other reviews on the product such as "falls out of outlet". As a contractor and after using this item myself I'm here to tell you if that's happening you have a worn electrical outlet. Ive been in homes where outlets were so worn a standard cord would barely stay in. The unit is quiet and versatile with the adjustable prongs that allow you to plug it in several positions. You will need to change the UV bulb once a year at about $15.

I have had this Germ Guardian UV-C Air Sanitizer and here's the 411:

REALLY eliminates odors from diaper pails to pet odor, you name it.

very light fan sound actually helps lull my son to sleep.

portable, used during travel and family reunions my son never caught a bug!

great for business travelers (used this on hotel stays) and folks with roommates (students, when you're dorm mate is sick or has a cold, this might just save you!)

use in room setting only for it to function at 100%.

To keep this gadget working, just follow the instructions and booklet, and KEEP the info you'll need the info for bulb replacement and repair. Got mine repaired after 2 years of continued use to be certain that it is functioning well. Like any gadget, you have to care for it as well to keep it in optimum shape.

Worth the price. An absolute must have!!!

We've had no problem with this humidifier and have used it through 2 babies. I like that the cute design doesn't make the nursery look like a hospital. It's nice to be able to adjust the setting as well as being able to shut it off completely without unplugging it. It holds a decent amount of water and we only refill it every few days if we are using it on a high setting all the time (We typically only use this when the little one is congested).

I purchased this for our infant's room. It was in operation for all of his normal sleep times (approximately 14 hours a day). After three months it began to make a loud noise from the fan (located at the base)that pushes the mist out the top. I tapped it and stopped the noise. Now, the switch has broken. The humidifier was working intermittently for about a week (while the switch remaining in the on position). It is now completely non-functional.

We have bought three of this same humidifier and, every time, it starts to leak. The base of the reservoir is sealed very poorly. On two of our models, the reservoir was leaking from the bottom, where the blue plastic meets the grey plastic. We didn't treat it badly or cause this to happen, they are just made very cheaply. On our other model, the sealer around the cap broke.

In short, they are extremely prone to leaking and breaking, and it sucks to have to deal with it.

I bought this to replace the sponge bob one that didn't even work. This one worked really well for 5 months. I put it away for a year and took it out to be used. It didint let any mist out instead it leaked from the bottom all over my dresser and ruined it.I find it starnge that the fan is located on the bottom of the humidifier. Vicks makes their fans on the top which make them last longer since the water doesn't go through them. Never buying a crane humidifier again.

I love this little miracle. I expected it to leave a puddle during use but it makes no mess at all. The rumble from the motor is very soothing. Easy to use. I took away one star because the threading on the various size water bottle caps is very specific & tight so you can't use a common water bottle. The bottle needed is more like a sparkling, mineral water bottle than anything else; I also found my plastic vinegar bottle (from Krasdale) had the correct threading. It doesn't fit my Nalgene or any other of my permanent water bottles. I am a singer and used to some humidity, so this is excellent for travelling. It's easy to pack, I haven't had any need to clean it yet, I haven't had any problems at all. Also the description says there are "Two different sized bottle adapters" when it actually comes with 3.

Very much recommended!

After 1 year of use, still working great. The output stream is adequate for single room (hotel, bedroom). The volume of steam it puts into the air is pretty small, so when you first turn it on, it takes a while (an hour or more) to get enough water into the air to affect the humidity.

Great product so far (after first two days).

Seems to be a follow on design of the older SU-1051 (similar to the old Air Swiss design), which fixes the main problems of the SU-1051 (and Air Swiss) design. It comes with 3 different sized bottle adapters, no annoying light, no leakage of which to speak. Outputs a small, but steady stream of mist, which seems adequate for a normal sized room (hotel, bedroom).

This humidifier does not work. The first day I tried it out, after a few minutes, the steam stopped emitting from the nozzle unless I touched or shook the unit. I tried the trouble shooting suggestion in the instructions and washed the nozzle, but it still didn't work. I give up on personal humidifiers. This is the second one I've bought, each were different brands and different models, and neither one worked from day 1.

This think leaked everywhere from day one. I really tried to make it work. I fiddled with it and got it to at least stop leaking and it misted maybe 10 minutes. It just sat there with the water bubbling but nothing coming out, like it needed a fan or something. Then all of a sudden, the water started flowing from the bottle without stopping and soaked everything again. Dried everything out and tried again. No improvement. Seriously? How could a manufacturer sell a product this poor they have to know it doesn't work! Its not like it worked for awhile and stopped. One DAY people!

We used this one night while staying in a cabin at the beach. The next night, it would create the mist, but the fan that blows it out stopped working. I tried completely drying it out, checking again, but no... the fan motor doesn't work. And of course I'm outside of the return window since this isn't something we use every day. Whether it's junky quality control or junky components, it still equals junk. Don't waste your money.

For several years we have used a large humidifier during the winter months. Despite frequent cleaning and care, we had to replace the humidifier filters every few weeks. My motivation for buying the Treatment was to increase the lifespan of the wick. I was only getting a few months life from a wick, using about two per winter. Using the Treatment, one wick is lasting more than one winter.

And the bottle lasts more than a winter, so it's worth it.

I hate to recommend W*lmart, but I bought my last bottle there for less than $2. That was still during the end of the humidifying season. Guess I should have bought two. I also bought their last half-dozen HM3600 humidifier wicks for $2 each (in July), when you couldn't find them for less than $12 anywhere on eBay.

I'll need another year to determine just how much longer the wicks are lasting, now that I'm on the Treatment. I just checked my wick. I think I used it for almost all last winter. It's just a little soft all over, but no serious deterioration. And no smell, just in case you're counting.

The instructions recommend adding a capful with every 3 gallons of water -as a start -and then after a while, you're supposed to determine whether your water needs more or less. I used a little less, and it still did the trick for my wick, apparently. My water is very soft. The instructions say harder water will require more Treatment. Granted, that's not a lot of guidance.

I didn't know if it's allowed to combine bactericide with the Treatment, so I didn't. Between the Treatment and being careful not to allow the humidifier to sit with water if it was turned off, the water never got smelly.

Before we tried the S1708 in our humidifier MA0800, we had to replace the filter about once per month. I would buy a case of 6 filters for over $60 each winter season. Since our baby was born we have decided to leave the humidifier running year round. I have used a bottle of this and am now ordering another and have only used 2 filters this entire year. I went to change it like normal, but the filter was like new. The only time I've had to change the filter is when we left it off for a few weeks with water in the tank.

We could not find this item anywhere then i looked on amazon.com and here it was. You have to use antibacterial even when you get a ball with the machine that is said to do the job.

I love this product. I like the larger bottles and it really makes our room clean smelling not musty and molded. Our maching stays super clean and free of all bacteria and molds using this. I would not be without it.

If you are using a humidifier and they say you do not need to add chemical, wrong. Buy this and you will see the difference and how clean your machine and air stays.

This replacement filter fits the Aprilaire 400 humidifier and is cheaper (including shipping) than purchasing from aprilaire's website (even though they have free shipping).

That being said, this replacement filter is grossly overpriced for what it is. Clearly a profit center for Aprilaire.

There's not much to say about the filters. They are the manufacturer's replacement unit and do their job. The service from Filters-Now was very good with fast delivery. I won't hesitate to order from them again, either directly or through Amazon. The price seems high for a simple paper and metal filter, but it's clearly a profit center for the manufacturer. The price from this vendor was much better than from others I found.

Purchased this for my in law's aprilaire 400 and it fits perfectly. No instructions needed to change it just remove the cover, pull out the holder, pull out the water tube from the holder and unclip the top of the holder from the bottom (one clip on each side). Reverse that to put it back together and reset the 'change water pad' indicator. One thing I wasn't sure about was whether the twin pack was really for two changes, or whether I need to use both for one change of the water pad, but as it turns out, only one is needed to change the water pad, so the twin pack is good for two changes.

I'd suggest to cycle the humidifier back on with the cover off and watch it for a few mins just to make sure you put everything back together properly and it's working as needed (it takes a while for the water to absorb into the pad when you watch it). Also a good time to check the float valve switches to make sure they're functioning, not stuck, etc... just lift up on the little tip of the valve switch (there are two, at the bottom of the pan) and the water should shut off .. switch should move freely.

We got timely shipping on this item.

Thia Aprilaire 45 Replacement Water PadTwin Pack [Misc.] that they describe on Amazon might not be what you receive. They describe the pads as 13.5" X 10.5". They also say it is a "twin pack" which, in actuality is two pads that are actually 7.5" x 9.5" each.

When I put the two pads together I got 15" X 9.5". I cut the 15" down to 13.5", which I needed. I am short in the other direction. I need 10" and have 9.5".

I am not happy with the way the vendor describes it versus what I actually received.

UPDATE 2/17/2012

After contacting seller concerning the above problem, they replied very quickly. Withing a few days i did get the correct item. The new pads fit perfectly.

The seller was obviously concerned that the wrong item was sent and wanted to rectify the problem immediately. For this reason I am changing my 1 star to five.

This wick fits into our humidifier and was a perfect drop in fit. That's the only good news.

The bad news is the design of this kind of wick. We have a lot of humidifiers in our house. It's a big house with lots of doors and hallways so we can't just use a huge one. We rely on a few "whole house" humidifiers, there are AprilAire humidifiers on the furnaces, and we have a few "medium" sized humidifiers in some bedrooms. All are set to keep moderate humidity, making sure the humidity is evenly dispersed so no one area gets too humid nor too dry. We have a lot of humidifiers and we have gone through many brands, many styles, and many sizes.

We have learned one very consistent fact: the humidifiers that use the flat, rectangular wicks are substantially less efficient than the humidifiers that use the cylindrical, round wicks. The stupid thing is that both the wicks and the humidifiers are approximately the same price within a given coverage range. The round wick machines don't cost any more but they work much better.

The humidifiers we use with this wick have to run constantly and can barely maintain 35% -even when set on roar (you know, so loud it sounds like a jet taking off). The round wick humidifiers can be kept on low (practically silent), push 45% if needed, and only have to run about half the time.

This is not a pointless rant about this one particular wick. It is just merely a reminder that if you are looking here then you have one of the flat wick humidifiers. Do yourself a big favor and rather than plonk down another $20 on this wick, instead consider buying a round wick humidifier and a round $20 wick. Either way the wick maker is happy because they probably don't care which wick you buy. Next time we need another wick we are just going to replace the whole machine.

FYI, we keep ours set at 30% in cooold weather, 35% in cold weather, and 40% in moderate weather, as recommended by the people who make such recommendations (the Department of They).

I received the filter on time from the vendor and at a fair price. It is the exact replacement for my humidifier. It works very well getting the moisture in the air, measured by my hygrometer!

I recommend it to others and will certainly buy it again as needed for my humidifier!
