The colder it gets, the more the heater runs, the more I fill it, but it isn't using up the water at a rate that is bothersome or wasteful. The only thing bad I have to say is it's big and not the nicest looking thing in a small living space, but we only need it in the winter so I can live with it. If you have the room to hide it in a corner it's a solid mid size humidifier.

My wife was having bad sinus problems and her MD recommended getting a humidifier. We purchased this one at Lowe's and have now had it for 4-5 years. Within about a month after purchasing this and placing it near our return air vent, as recommended, in our 1500 sq. ft home, my wife's sinus problems were resolved. I actually can't believe how much better I can breathe in the mornings when I wake up with this thing running vs. when it's not running. We now live in a 1800 sq. ft. home and it still serves our purposes well. It goes through about 1 tankfull of water per day during the cold days when the heat is running. I just fill it before bed each night. It is very quiet. We keep it in our bedroom beside the return air vent (right beside the bed)on the low setting and most of the time don't even realize it's running. I also purchase Holmes Bacteriostat and add about an ounce each time I fill the unit, which keeps the unit clean and never allows any bacterial growth (which ruins your filter). I only have to purchase about 1 filter and 1 bottle of bacteriostat per year. I recommend this item regularly to friends, family, and my own patients.I know there is a bad review out there on it as well as some other good ones but this has been one of the best investments I have ever made! We have the EssickAir Moist Air MA 1201. However, the pic looks the same as this one. This is the 3rd year we have had it.Pros:
It keeps the humidity up really well in our 1200 square foot home, especially if it is placed near the return air vent.
With the humidity up, we notice less nose bleeds, dry skin, sinus problems, and bronchial problems in the winter, which we had noticed before.
It has different humidity settings and different noise levels. The quietest setting is barely noticeable, and sounds like a soothing "white noise."
Cons:
It is HUGE. I'm glad we only need it out during the winter months, because it takes up a lot of space, IMO.
The pad, especially this year (our 3rd year) keeps getting moldy! My husband is Type A, Obsessive Compulsive about keeping this maintained, as he is in the Heating & Air industry and is both knowledgeable and mindful of humidifiers. He cleans it thoroughly, per directions, before the first use, and puts a new pad in it. Usually we start running it in late October. It is December now and we have bought THREE pads already this year. One pad should last at least for the few months we use it each year.

I live in a small one bedroom house, less than 1000 sq ft. I burn wood only for heat so my house gets very dry. In the past I have always purchased and used two smaller humidifiers and it didn't do what I expected and I spent a fortune on filters. This year I went with a bigger model, I figured with the wood stove I needed something that put out more humidity. I love this humidifier. The tank holds a gallon, and the reservoir in the bottom holds a gallon. So it holds a little over two gallons all together. I run mine on high, with the wood stove it is necessary. But, this unit does put out eight gallons in a 24 hour period. It does mean that I have to fill it four times a day, but I am happy to do it. I suffered terribly with sinus problems, dry eyes and a dry throat every winter. Now when I wake up, I feel good. No more red eyes, sore throat, or runny nose. Its all gone. I am sleeping better and my son even noticed that the air was better when he came to visit. It displays the humidity level and shuts off if it runs out of water. It's a good reminder if I forget to fill it because it won't run dry. It is easy to clean and I have had no mold problems at all. I do use the water treatment that is recommended for this model. I would recommend this humidifier to anyone. If you need to have eight gallons a day of output, it's there. If you need less, use a lower speed. Its great because you can read the humidity level and set the speed accordingly. I sleep better, and I feel much better. It does everything promised. It is not loud, it does not leak or any of those problems I have had in the past. It is easy to fill also. And it is so easy to clean.
Also, its important that you use Essick replacement filters. I ordered the filters that were on the page with the humidifier. They are the wrong filters and poorly constructed. Amazon sells the correct filters, Essick filter part number MAF2. Be sure to order the correct filters. Don't waste your money on imitations. And order the correct number, MAF2 is the replacement filter number.

We decided to buy this humidifier with the hopes that it would humidify the entire second floor of our 1700sf, 2 1/2 story colonial. I do believe it is doing a good job. I must say that after one night I do feel relief from the dryness. I use cpap and would wake up all night long because of mouth dryness. Even though my cpap machine has its own humidifier there was no humidification reaching me because the air was so dry coming into the machine. Using this multi-room humidifier has absolutely reduced the dryness in our home and I noticed a difference in my cpap therapy. Air in the house is definitely more comfortable. The unit is quite quiet. The fill tank is fairly easy to fill, although it was too tall to fill in the bathroom sink. Internally it is very accessible when you lift the fill tank and main assembly from the base. This is something which I wanted as I didn't want the operation of the unit to be a mystery (is there mold or algae building up inside)? You can clearly see all parts of this humidifier and clean it easily when necessary. Filter/wick is very easy to replace and is inexpensive.
