I putchased this unit as it was specified as having three features I wanted in a basement unattended dehumidifier a) auto restart on power failure b) continous gravity drain and c) automatic defrost. When I received the unit and hooked up the continous drain hose the unit continued to fill up its bucket and auto stop when the bucket filled up. I checked several times to make sure I had hooked up the auto drain as per istructions which were very straight forward. Finally convinced I had hooked up the hose correctly I called Danby customer care in Toronto. Got through to them very quickly. The person I spoke with explained that, yes, this model was having " manufacturing problems" and many units were not auto draining, but they were working on a "fix". He offered to take my name and mail me the fix as soon as it was out. When I asked him how long the fix has been worked on and when it would be available , he responded " for several months" and " any week now". Well not willing to wait for the "fix" I asked and got my money back from the reseller I had bought the unit from. So before I would buy this unit ( which appeared quite solid) if the continous drain feature is important to you I would check and make sure the "fix" is in.

Warning. I purchased a Danby dehumidifier after excellent consumer report reviews and research. It worked GREAT for one summer. But by fall I noticed this thing wasn't working as good. I saw less water being drawn out. I thought it was because temperatures were dropping in Chicago, so I packed it up for the winter. Well spring comes and it didn't work at all. I called Danby and they stated to send it to a local shop. I searched for days to find a shop. Most companies stated it just takes too long to get parts from Danby and they stopped doing repairs. After calling Danby again, I found a shop in North Chicago area, I live in the south suburbs. So I packed this heavy piece of machinery, yes it weighs about 80 pounds, in my CUV and fought traffic on the Dan Ryan. Got a call back a few days later stating the warranty wasn't valid and it would cost around $150 to repair. Luckily the owner was legit and stated that these things never last long. He gets many complaints and he recommended I purchase a new dehumidifier instead. Don't buy a Danby in the US. It is too tough to get parts and their warranty is a joke, 6 months. I noticed now they are 1 year, but Whirlpool units have up to 5 years. If you buy this unit get an extended warranty, I didn't and regret it. I would just stay away from Danby dehumidifiers.

I just purchased a Frigidaire unit from Amazon with a 3 year warranty. So far it is working like a champ and it is MUCH LESS noisy. Now I am realizing I made a huge mistake buying a Danby. I thought all dehumidifiers were noisy, my whirlpool I replaced was loud and the Danby was even louder. The Frigidaire unit makes so much less noise. So another reason to stay away from Danby.

I spent a lot of time doing research about dehumidifiers online, and also reading articles about many brands.

I ultimately settled on this Danby 70 pint unit, and that was most certainly the right decision.

I have a 2400 sq ft Cape Cod style home with a full basement.

Although we live higher up on a hillside, there are some minor hydraulic water problems in the soil immediately surrounding the concrete foundation.

When there is a considerable amount of rain, we occasionally get small damp spots, or in the case of a rainstorm, puddles coming up from the floor, as well as a musty odor.

My old, heavy dehumidifier worked well enough, but was somewhat costly to run from an energy standpoint.

This unit was well thought out, extremely well designed, works perfectly, is fairly quiet (my old unit sounded like a B737 at takeoff) and has the best overall reputation.

This unit is light enough to maneuver around, and has a handy see through tank level indicator that makes checking it easy.

It can be set up to collect the water in its tank, or, as I am planning to do, duct it with a short length of hose right into a drain into the laundry drain tub.

Its controls and instructions are most easy to understand and make absolute sense.

Haven't received the new electric bill yet, but this Danby unit is doing a 100% job of removing the moisture and mustiness in the air in the entire basement.

I'd buy it again in a heartbeat, and seriously endorse the unit as one that will do what is needed for 99% of applications.

I had originally thought that a larger unit would use more electricity, but actually, the larger units collect the moisture more quickly and shut themselves off in a lot less time, therefore saving energy.

I have friends how have used competitor's brands for about the same money, and have had far poorer results.

One borrowed my Danby and after trying it, has decided to return his Frigidare unit and buy one like mine.

Buy the Danby....you won't be sorry!!

Honest reviews on Danby 70 Pint Dehumidifier - DDR7009REE - Energy Star Compliant

I've had this dehumidifier for about 2 days now. Was shipped in 4 buisness days, box-in-box(the product box was placed in another box) and filled with what looks like shredded newspaper. The outer box looked a bit roughed up, but the product box looked perfect. Very simple to set up and get working, came with remote and proper size batteries, and constant drain hose(about 4 feet long). Plugged it in and turned it on, not too loud at all. Sounds like any other medium sized house fan on high, a bit quieter on low.

We live in the rainy and wet northwest, in a smaller 2-bedroom apartment that is partially underground. Because the living room, kitchen, and bathroom are underground, the walls and carpet always smell musty(its an old apartment complex that is reaching the end of its lifetime, plans to remodel in 3 years). Borrowed a buddies humidistat one day, and discovered that it was 58% humid outside, and 91% humid in our apartment. Naturally, decided it was time to go shopping.

When we turned the dehumidifier on, temp read 61f and humidistat read 89%. Turned it on high, and set the humidistat for 30%. After 24 hours, humidity was down to 46%, and temp was up to a very comfortable 71f. Only needed to empty the bucket once, very large capacity.

Yesterday morning woke up with a nosebleed from the dry air, so decided to set the humidistat to 50% with fan on low. Also purchased a wall outlet timer(beacuse the fan ONLY turns off automatically when the bucket is full, even if the compressor is off), and have it running 6 hours during the day. Our apartment is now a steady 49%/72f at 3pm, and 65%/65f at 3am. Overall MUCH more comfortable(with no nosebleeds, lol). Be sure that if you intend to use this to dehumidify a living space, that its not set TOO high for the sq/ft. It WILL dry YOU out.

Very very happy with purchase. Lost a star due to the fan only turning off when bucket is full, regardless of compressor state. Its only a minor irritation, would give 4 1/2 stars if i could.

Will update in a week or so when power bill comes to see how much its costs to run(though by my math it should only pull as much power as a medium/high end computer or a midrange AC unit)

UPDATE: Power bill came, and just like i predicted its probobly 2-4 dollars more a month to run constantly. With the timer in place, our bill hasnt changed in any real noticeable way. Its sill running strong, pulling buckets of water out of our air a week. It had to use its automatic defrost once(all it did was turn the compressor off, and turn the fan on high for about 10-15min.), but was over quickly. 3 weeks later, still happy with it. Seems sturdy enough that it will last a long time to come.

After spending 2-3 weeks looking at all of the portable dehumidifier options for our finished basement, I chose this for several reasons.

1.) Automatic restart The power frequently goes out on our street, and I don't want to have to go and reset this each time.

2.) Capacity This unit is tested to remove 70 pints of water a day in ideal conditions. I don't know the exact amount that the unit is removing, but there was a noticeable difference in our basement after the first day of use on the high fan setting. I have since turned the unit to low and it maintains the humidity very well.

3.) Continuous drain I certainly do not want to have to go down to the basement and empty this daily or every couple days. The only downside to this models continuous drain feature is that you have to use the included hose, which is pretty short. I bought a 15 foot hose with this unit, but it will not stay on the dehumidifier. The threads on the nipple from the back of the unit are filed down on the top and bottom, which is fine for their hose, but the additional weight of the rubber hose causes it to fall off of the nipple. This causes the unit to use the internal bucket. I just moved the unit closer to the drain and used the included hose.

4.) Warranty This unit has a two year warranty, where others only have a one year. I have read that most portable dehumidifiers die after a little more than a year, so it's kind of nice to know that I have a little more time after that which is covered under warranty.

This unit does produce a little bit of heat like all dehumidifiers do, but it is not excessive. The unit is also very quiet. I have to be in the same room as it to hear it running. The controls are extremely easy to use. A five year old could get this up and running in twenty minutes flat (including unboxing, placement and setting the unit for the desired humidity).

I gave the unit only four stars because I've only owned it for a couple weeks. These types of units typically die after a year. I hope this one lasts a little longer than that.

All in all, it is a great unit. I would recommend this to anyone looking at portable dehumidifiers.

I bought this filter and it did not fit properly AT ALL! The plastic piece that went over it kept on falling into the container while vacuuming. It made it very difficult to put the canister back in place as well. It caused the vacuum to lose suction which made the hose constantly clog forcing me to take the whole hosing off to unclog it each time. At first I thought it was the vacuum itself that was the problem but after buying a dirt devil produced filter it worked like new again. I would not recommend this product.

Keeps most of the dust, dander, and hair off the underlying paper element filter. Easy to clean, and survives quite a while. Will buy more when needed.

buying another one, last one I bought was a perfect replacement. I don't understand some of the other reviews, apparently they either ordered the wrong part for the vac that they own or got an incorrect part and should have returned it. It fit just fine into the canister on the vac, you have to know how it fits and put it on correctly. If you know what you are doing, you should have no problems

Honest reviews on Honeywell H12012 Replacement Filter for Dirt Devil F16

This didn't fit at all. I couldn't even force it to sort of fit. It simply would not go on the vacuum. Unfortunately, I bought it as a future replacement so I only found out that it didn't fit well after the return date had passed. It ended up in the trash.

I replaced the stock paper and foam filter in my Red Devil vacuum with this product, but it seems that it is TOO restrictive to the airflow. The vacuum does a very poor job at picking up since replacing the filter, and I feel the brushes shooting particles back at my feet and ankles rather than getting sucked up by the vacuum. There seems to be far more dust on the Honeywell foam filter than with the original, which would be great if it didn't result in far fewer big particles and objects from being picked up.

I received this fountain as a gift. It is easy to set up and assemble for the first time. The pump is fairly quiet, and the sound of the water falling is quite relaxing. The fountain design is beautiful, and the rocks included in the box are very pretty to look at.

My problem came in that when the fountain needs to be cleaned, and it will need to be cleaned because if you don't run it for a few days, the water tends to form scum, that you have to remove all of the rocks and try not to make a mess with scummy water everywhere. Then, when you drain the water out, the fountain is assembled in such a way that the slate cliff-like levels have to be removed or they'll fall out.

Also, after about 9 months of regular usage, my pump quit. I wrote to the manufacturer and they told me to mail the entire fountain to them and they would replace it. This fountain weighs about 7-8 lb and for what it would cost me to mail it, I may as well purchase a new one, which I didn't.

I have bought many Homedics products in the past and have been quite satisfied with them all, but I guess I shouldn't have expected so much out of a fountain under 30.00.

The bottom line-while it is certainly a lovely, tranquilizing product, which my cats also loved, it's not all that durable. I recommend a fountain to anyone who wants relaxation but please realize they're not all that durable.

I got one of these as a gift and I love it! I set it up near the living room and turn it on when I'm reading... it has a very relaxing sound, enough so that I sometimes fall asleep... ;)

I purchased this for myself with a gift card. It looked beautiful, but it was actually a bit of a pain to maintain. Firstly, the water splashes out a bit, so since I had it on wooden furniture, I had to put a towel under it. Secondly, my house water is hard, so there was a lot of mineral build up over time. It's plastic, and it's not easy to clean. The mineral deposits don't really scrub out completely. On the positive side, the sound was nice, it was pretty, and I could readjust the rocks anytime to alter the flow. I did throw it away after about 2.5 years.

Honest reviews on Homedics Rock Rock Garden Tabletop Fountain

I am enjoying my new tabletop fountain. It has a definite zen feel and look to it. The base is black with a subtle ornate design to it. I have not noticed it making alot of noise, as some of the other reviewers have stated, but I try to make sure that the pump is totally submerged (this cuts down on the sound). It comes with the river rocks which are beautiful in themselves. I also put it together myself and the directions were easy to follow (and I'm not usually good with that stuff!. Some negatives: You need to place alot of the rocks in the fountain so that the light column doesn't show through so much. If you don't you just see this column of light and the zen feeling goes out the window.

I've been using humdifiers for years and have tried every type. The cool mist ones mildew up quickly and the wicks are expensive. The ultrasonics are nice, but unless you use distilled water, you run the risk of breathing in bacteria from tap water, since the mist is cool and the water and any particulates that are in the water are nebulized into the air. The warm mist are the best, since the water is boiled and only the steam escapes. I have used many brands of warm mist humidifiers over the years... Holmes, Duracraft, and Honeywell. This Crane model is THE BEST yet. It hasn't leaked once. The tank size is adequate for a medium sized bedroom. I run mine on the low setting and it goes for 12 hours easily. The operation is quiet. The other brands I've tired all have the same basic design... the heating element is round with a hole in the middle and is difficult to scrub on all sides if there is a lot of hard water build up. This design has a solid heating element built into the bottom of the unit and can be scrubbed easily with a brush to remove build up. There is some basic weekly maintenance required, but it's not difficult. You need to use distilled white vinegar to dissolve build up and disinfect. One thing I don't particularly like is the blue light that comes on when the unit is turned on. It's not bright enough to light up the whole room (kind of like a night-light), but for folks who like 100% pitch-black when they sleep, this may not be for you. I'm glad I found this brand and model. For the price, it's a great machine.

I needed humidifiers for a couple of rooms and I wasn't sure whether to go with this Crane humidifier or the Vicks V745A. Both had pretty good reviews, had similar capacities, were about the same price, etc. So I picked up the Vicks model at a local store, and I ordered the Crane from Amazon.

Both models are very similar in the way they generate steam, but there are a couple of significant differences that makes me prefer the Vicks model over the Crane.

For starters, the low setting of the Crane outputs about the same amount of steam as the high setting of the Vicks, and it turns out that the Crane is a 400 watt unit, while the Vicks is only about 275 watts. I keep the Crane on its low setting overnight in the bedroom, and the water tank is almost empty by morning. The Vicks needs to be on its high setting to go through the same amount of water in the same period of time.

Second, the design of the water tank on the Crane makes it harder to fill than on the Vicks. Neither one has a tank that will fit under my bathroom sink faucet, so I have to fill them in the shower. And although the filler hole on the Crane is wider, it lacks a handle like the Vicks model has, and filling it under the shower faucet is kind of awkward.

Next, once the tank is in place on the Crane model, the bottom of the tank sits in a lot more water than does the Vicks. Not sure this is really a problem, but when you remove the tank for cleaning (there's both daily and weekly cleaning recommended for both), it drips more water on the floor. Also, the filler cap on the Crane has developed a little bit of a musty odor, and again I'm not sure if it's from sitting in more water on a constant basis.

Finally, I find the Crane model to be a bit more difficult to clean than the Vicks. The space around the heating element is much narrower, making it hard to wipe around with a cloth. The Crane also accumulates more rust deposits than the Vicks, which is probably because of its higher wattage heating element.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program If you should notice that this review is exactly the same as the one I did for the Vicks unit that is because they are exactly the same unit beyond some very minor cosmetic differences.

I think I read every review of every humidifier on Amazon. It seemed like every one of them is destined to leak, burst into flames or turn into a level 3 biohazard. In the end I decided that I agreed with another reviewer and it just made sense to buy one of the cheaper ones and see how it worked out.

To start off this review I think I have to let everyone know a little basic biology. Any time there is standing water it is a potential breeding ground for mold, bacteria, etc. This isn't only true in your little Crane humidifier--it is true everywhere on the planet. If you have ever had a leak behind a wall you know how quickly standing water can turn into a problem and fast. However, there is not an abundant food source in your humidifier so the risk is manageable with some precautions. I'm just going to list them in no real order of importance because they are all important:

1) Don't let water sit in your unit when it is off. This includes the water in the little reservoir below the big tank of water. Yes, empty that out too if you won't be using it for a while.

2) It is much easier to prevent a mold or bacterial overgrowth than it is to clean up once one starts. In fact if you get any serious overgrowth (which can happen to any humidifier) it probably makes sense to just throw it out and start over.

3) Clean the plastic on your unit with a thymol based cleaner. I use Seventh Generation Disinfecting Bathroom Cleaner, Lemongrass & Thyme 26 fl oz (786 ml). It's great. It will leave behind just a tiny bit of thymol on the plastic parts and thymol is a natural germ fighter (derived from thyme).

4) Wash out the tank with bleach regularly. They say a tablespoon but I just pour in a bit of bleach and shake it.

5) Practice getting a good fit of all the pieces. There are, if memory serves, 6 pieces to this that need to all fit together like a Lego set. If you played with Legos as a kid this will be easy. If you didn't, don't panic, take a careful look and make sure you've fit all the parts together right. If you don't it will leak and you will be unhappy. If you feel like taking things apart and putting them back together isn't your thing you must look for a different unit.

6) There are only 2 settings--low and high. Low is really low and high is really high. In my roughly 10x15 bedroom the low setting will raise ambient humidity by about 13% with the door open and by about 20% with the door shut. So if I start at 30% humidity I'll get to 43% with the door open and 50% with the door almost completely closed. Note, I said "almost" completely closed. I find that in my size bedroom low will take the humidity routinely up over 50% if I close the door completely. That is too much moisture.

7) You need to also buy a humidistat. I like P3 P0270 Mold Alert Electronic Thermo-Hygrometer as it is responsive to small changes in the humidity level. Without a hygrometer you'll really have no way of knowing if you need to use high, low or just turn the unit off. Most people should be shooting for between 30-50% humidity. In fact when I get home most nights I don't even need to turn on the humidifier because the level will already be between 30-50%. Lastly on this topic you can't estimate the inside humidity by getting the % from the weather channel. It just doesn't work that way. The humidity inside your home will depend on a lot of factors beyond just what the outside humidity is. Do yourself a favor and get the hygrometer too.

8) Water has stuff in it. Even distilled water has stuff in it. So eventually you are going to have to clean the heating element with vinegar. When you do this it will be helpful to use an old toothbrush to scrub the metal part that heats the water as this will accumulate the most stuff. Also, don't blame Crane for stuff in your water--talk to your local water department or building owner.

9) Don't ever ever ever use an abrasive pad to clean the plastic. Why? Because abrasive pads will leave tiny little scratches in the surface of the plastic. Those scratches make for a perfect home where bacterial colonies can get established. Only use non-scratch cleaning products to clean the plastic surfaces...nothing abrasive.

So yes, that is a lot of rules and guidelines. There is just no easy way to have standing water in your living space. If you are going to attempt it you have to be vigilant and attentive to the care of your Crane.

Honest reviews on Crane Warm Mist Humidifer, 1 Gallon

I ordered two of this humidifiers from Amazon later last year, they were used for around 3-4 months so far. This year we started to use them again, but with the first time using, I got smoke from one of them. I opened up the bottom cover, found the heater part melted the plastic in the bottom. This unit was in my kid room, couldn't image what would happen if adult was not there that time!!!! I checked back another unit, saw similar problem, the symptom was not so serious yet, but no doubt, it will get smoke and fire very soon. This product has fire danger, manufacture should recall this product!!

On the plus side, this humidifier does put out a lot of steam. On the negative side, I woke up in the middle of the night with my bedroom full of acrid smoke.

The heating mechanism became dislodged and burned a hole in the plastic bottom of the unit before I woke up, unplugged it, threw it in the bathtub and doused it with the remaining water in the reservoir. The smell was awful but it did wake me up before my rug caught on fire. So, that's nice.

Had only had it a few months when it caught fire.

Probably won't be buying Crane products again.

I have owned an Essick Air unit for several years. It has outlasted all "Sears" brands and models. It is still going strong every heating/dry season.

Secrets to making it work: I use the 1041 wicks. Every two or three weeks, I take the entire unit into the bathroom, pull out the wick and using a hand held shower spray, rinse off the wick thoroughly. This helps lower the mineral build-up and the wick lasts longer. Also I change wicks about every two or three months. So I need about two or three for the heating season.

Yes the so-called digital "humidistat" doesn't seem to work. Simple solution, I just set the unit to a higher humidity than what is displayed. When I want to run the unit, I turn it on. When I want it off, I turn it off. It's just that simple. I do not run it 24x7, I run it when needed, like overnight when the heat comes on.

And I use a separate humidity gauge. This one works wonderfully:

Taylor 1523 Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer and Hygrometer

As for noise, I only run it on the 2, 3 or 4 level. Yes, you can crank it up highter, but just like any fan, the higher you set it the louder it gets... and I can hear the TV just fine even when this is running...

It's much easier to carry a bucket of water to this unit to fill it up than to remove water canisters and drag them out and go fill elsewhere. I'm sure you know the type I mean. Sometimes I just use a rinsed out 1-gallon water bottle just to fill it with, just open the hinged panel and pour the water in.

Here's another hint. Don't mount it on the wheels that come with. Put the entire unit on a towel or carpeting scrap. This will also helps if you accidentally spill a bit of water when filling. That also helps keep it quieter and lessen the vibration.

Do not forget the bacteriastat either, but be careful when using this additive, as always.

It is normal for the wick to be about half dry (at the top) and half wet (at the bottom). The entire wick does NOT need to be saturated soaking wet for this to work as the "well" of water is only the few inches at the bottom...

At the end of the season, rinse it out, maybe using a vinegar solution if there is any scale and then disinfect with a mild bleach solution and it's ready to be stored away, waiting for next year.

This is a GREAT humidifier and I've owned one for several years and if I need another one, I'll get another one of these. In the meantime, the one I own is still going strong.

As an engineer I rate this appliance 5 Stars. The only drawbacks is the fan as not really balances and it vibrates slightly. Put mine in service and in 4 hours the humidity went up from 33% to 45%. Recommend NOT using the rollers, set it on the floor directly to damp the vibration. The water jugs are ingenious, handles on top and bottom make it a snap to fill. Wish they had these types in the 70's. I AM IMPRESSED with this unit, and I do not give accolades freely.

Have had it for three years now and it's still holding strong. Humidity and filter cleanliness gauges seem to have broken long ago though (eg even after cleaning filter gauge quickly says it's dirty and humidity gauge always says 21%).

Unit is much quieter than others I have had in the past but the auto on/off never worked well (back when humidity gauge worked) since it would constantly cycle on/off every few seconds.

I wish the top would be boxed on this so when I fill it up I wouldn't have to balance it in place, and it would hold more water.. Also, the handles hold water (when upside down, spills out when lifted), not good when overflow of bathtub water goes in. I just feel they could have done a better design job on these. I gave two stars due to the opening to fill is larger than my older model. Any non-ultrasonic unit I have works the same and way better than ultrasonic.

The description of this product is misleading. When I received my unit in the mail I was very surprised on the miniature size. Even though the details on the humidifier claimed this unit would last up to 10 hours this is far from 10 hours more like 4 to 5 hours if that. The mist output was poor as well even on high it did not make a difference in my apt bedroom. I had this unit for not a full 2 weeks and the electrical system have shorted out completely. I would stay away from this particular product.

My daughter is asthmatic, and we've been through several (4-5) different humidifiers over the last few years to help keep it in control. We've owned this one for quite some time now, and it has been great for us for several reasons:

1) My 6 year old is able to fill it up each night all by herself.

2) The water reservoir really does stay clean

3) Does not easily spill in a young, active child's room.
