This little device seems to work very well. It is smaller than I had imagined it to be. It does exactly what it says it does and is configurable so that you can set a certain rH as well as a range that it can fall to (or rise to) before the relay kicks on. This helps to keep the relay from kicking on and off every few seconds. It also has a delay feature that would accomplish the same thing I assume, but I have not tried it. It seems accurate, maybe 3 or 4% below my cheap digital hygrometer, but it is calibratable +-5%. It can be set to humidify or dehumidify.

The only difficult thing is hooking it up; you need a 110v power cord hooked into the rear screw terminals to power it. To hook up a device your best bet is to make a small enclosure and put an electrical outlet and the humidistat into it, wire the white wire of a power cable to the outlet and the black wire to one side of the relay terminal then the other side of the relay to the outlet. This is assuming that you are using an appliance with a standard 110v appliance.

I use this for mycology but it would work well for terrariums or attics/crawlspaces too.

Hooked it up and it seems to work as described. It's measured value in the 65-75% range agrees with the reading from my room dehumidifier but reads 8-10% higher than the hygrometer in my weather station. Been using it for the last couple weeks hooked up to an electrostatic humidifier and so far so good.

I bought a version of this machine at Home Depot, thought I'd share my experience here...

The Bionaire Cool Mist Tower serves my purposes for a medium sized apartment. If I put it in the corner of my room behind a few things, I don't hear it much. It wicks humidity into the air well enough and offers comfort during the fall, winter and early spring, especially around flu season. There's an indicator on top of the unit that tells you when it's time to replace the filter--not sure how accurate it is. The filter seems to do its job so far, I'm about to order a two pack for about 8 to 10 dollars.

The water container is just about the right size and weight to carry to and from the sink to fill up. But wait--you can't stand it upside down to fill the opening on the bottom. Really? REALLY? I have to cradle this jug in my arms while I fill it, like I'm feeding a baby. It doesn't fit in my sink, either. Awkward, and be careful putting the screw cap bottom on correctly or it will leak all over the floor on the way back to the main unit.

The fan, which seems like a propeller on a long stem, is reasonably quiet at one speed--high. At lower speeds, it makes clunking noises all day and night, as if the propeller shaft is wobbling.

These machines are basically water tanks with a filter and a fan above them. Why are they so hard to build correctly, to run quietly and dispense moisture into the air?

That's all they have to do...

The Bionaire Cool Mist Tower is a glory of simplification. It is very easy to fill since it has a wide opening and one gallon of water lasts about 12 hours in my apartment. The humidity in my apartment during the winter runs roughly around 17% and with use of this product, I can get it up to 25%. It also runs quietly, an important factor since I have it in my bedroom. I have purchased other humidifiers but I like this one best and the company shipped it in good condition and on time.

The humidifier works like it was designed to do..Works well for about a medium size room and the filters are just your basic filter which you will have to replace every few months if used most of the time... The fan is fairly quiet and it does let you know what the humidity is in the room which I also have a wall meter which states fairly close to the one on the humidifier, so I would say it is pretty accurate.

The PROBLEM I have with the Unit, which I also wrote Bionaire about, and they let me know in a hurry that they don't care is the WATER TANK!! First off you better have a utility tub or you will have to fill it in the bath tub. Luckily I do have a utility tub so that is not a problem..The real problem is the tank bottom which is not flat. You cannot set the tank down in the tub to fill it. You have to hold the tank up or it will fall over. The best way for me is to place it on and angle and then stick my fingers in the opening to hold it upright. Then in order to put humidifier treatment in, it becomes a real challenge if you did not remember to have it all set up and ready before you filled the tank. After all you have one hand holding the tank so you only have one hand free to measure your humidifier treatment and pour it in.. I hate this tank on this machine and if I would of known I would of found me a DIFFERENT HUMIDIFIER..Easy fill tank is indeed important...I will remember that THANKS TO BIONAIRE!!!

One more thing to think about...With it being tall and thin their is not a lot of water sitting on the bottom for the filters to sit in. I have found for best humidity it is best if I re-wet the filters every few hours because the top portion of the filter will get dry and the out put of humidity will slow down. I would have a hard time recommending this humidifier to someone that is wanting something simple and easy to use, this thing is a pain in the neck...

First replacement shaft receiver was "loose" and "woobley" ! 2nd replacement worked only one night before it developed a very loud grinding sound within the motor. Never had a problem with this brand of motors before. Don't know what happended to the quality.

I just bought this 2 gallon Optimus after my last slant fin humidifyer had issues, and I was not real successful looking for the parts. SO far I love the quietness and no light.

I max it out in the bedroom at night, so I have to fill daily, but it is light and easy rather pleasant! Make the bed, refill the Optimus. I'm on here now to buy the little filter sleeves, which I understand can be washed out but do wear out. I don't want to be caught without. I will mention my oversized Bionair which I use for the primary house is very noisy (IF you put it on high which i do unless it is time to relax) and the Bionaire also takes a long time to fill the two canisters (but lasts for weeks). I would not want it in the bedroom due to the noise and ugly dark grey this 2 gallon Optimus is perfect.

After all of the problems I read about with other designs, I love the simplicity of this one. There are no pumps, heating coils, shut off valves, or electronics to worry about. It is just a small fan pulling air across a wicking element. It needs to be refilled about once a day, but if you forget it just becomes a fan not a fire hazard. The fan and tank simply lift off, making cleaning easy.

Best of all, instead of heating the air it actually cools it slightly (it is basically a small swamp cooler). And because it passively humidifies it is self regulating, it will evaporate less as humidity increases. There will never be a wet area around it.

The only reason it doesn't earn 5 stars is price, call it 4 1/2. It is a small fan and 3 pieces of plastic, hardly justifying the $50 cost. The elements are cleanable, but do wear out and are $15.

Bought this item a month or so ago, and I like it well enough. It is a simple design that uses a replaceable "wicking" element Optimus U-30011 Humidifier Replacement Wick Filter for U-33015, 2-Pack underneath the fan to provide a large surface area to evaporate the water. Be aware that you will have to replace the wick every so often. Our water is quite hard, so we buy distilled water to use in the humidifier to extend the life of the wick, otherwise mineral deposits can build up on the wick rather quickly and it is not recommended to try and clean and re-use the wicks. The unit is not silent, but is actually very pleasantly quiet, and be aware that it "burbles" as it releases water from the tank into the unit every so often...I do not find it disturbing and can sleep with it near the bed. On "hi" fan speed it will go through a gallon of water (one tank full) in about 24 hours in our room...this of course will depend on your relative humidity (we live in Arizona, near Phoenix...so quite dry here...) One dislike about the unit is that you fill the tank from the bottom and the handle on top is not flat...thus to fill the tank you cannot set it on a flat surface and have it stay upright. I have kneel on the floor and balance the tank between my knees to pour water into the tank. Also, when placing the tank back into the unit, it fits snugly and it does not always slide right in...you have to finaggle it into place...which can be annoying but not difficult.

This humidifier is like a mini-evaporative cooler (i.e. fan pulls air through a wet, replaceable wick).

It is quiet even on high [fan] speed. For example, it is quieter than a typical computer fan.

So far, so good the only negative that I can see is that it periodically pulls a small amount of air into the tank. The small amount of air rises to the top in the form of bubbles, which make a little noise. It does not bother me, but for some it might.

We just got this unit a few days ago took me all of 2 minutes to read the instructions and crank it up. I placed it in our large bedroom (about 280sf) and hit the turbo button (great feature that in essence makes the unit run at a super high speed for 20 minutes to quickly process the room's air) and left. My wife opened the door to the room about a half hour later and said "wow it feels so fresh in here". We both smelled the difference. it's really what you don't smell nothing seems to be in the air. No dust, odors, nothing.

It runs quite except on the high speed and turbo you can certainly here it running at these speeds but it's a nice white noise. It's solid and compact. I love that I will never have to buy a filter for this and it tells me when it needs cleaning.

I grabbed this during a lightning deal Black Friday week '11. I had been looking into getting an air filter for years, reading reviews, checking prices, etc, but always heard that either they did not really work, or they were not worth the cost, plus additional costs over time. This popped up in a lightning deal, so figured why not just try one. I had it running in my large upstairs bedroom at night for most of December. I could smell a difference in the air nearby, but nothing major. A few weeks ago I finally got around to cleaning my pet room, and giving away my non-dog pets. All the animals were kept in cages, and never allowed to wander around, so no stains/accidents on the floor, or anything like that, but the room definitely had an animal smell. I cleared out everything and vacuumed about ten times, but still, could not get the smell to go away. I moved the air filter to this room, placed it in a corner and left it on the "Whisper" setting. It took a few days, but now the room has this nice pleasant clean smell. No indication it ever smelled differently or had animals in it. Also, have noticed the difference in the air, as have my guests, but have not had to clean the unit yet. It does have a slight build up on it, so it is grabbing something out of the air.

Static As in electricity. If you walk around this unit often, you will notice a build up of static electricity and might get a slight shock when touching metal. This could also be due to the overly dry air my part of Texas has been experiencing lately. This is nothing worse than dragging your feet across a carpeted floor or rubbing a balloon on your hair.

I plan on getting additional units for other rooms in my house.

I really like that this air purifier doesn't have any filters that need to be replaced. I take it apart and wash it once every few weeks, and when I wipe down the inner gills, a lot of black stuff (dirt from the air) comes off. Thus it seems to be doing its job, and on low speed it's not very loud (just a background "hum".) If you turn up the speed, however, it's quite noisy since it's pulling air through much faster and you can hear the internal fans whirring. We only turn up the speed when we're not in the house. I also really like the design -it's very sleek.

Quiet and efficient. (I this is actually my second one, for work.)

I'm very pleased with this air-filter. Very reliable too... I got my first one 2 years ago, and it's been running nearly night and day the whole time. It still performs flawlessly.

It's a little tough to clean the filter with that narrow brush, but it's better than breathing that stuff in.

I just purchased this device and put it into service yesterday to combat the terrible mold issue in our old apartment, and also because we have dust and cat dander no matter how often I dust and vacuum. Where there is a mold flare up, my daughter coughs all night long (and ends up getting sick), which happened two nights ago and prompted me to make this purchase. Last night however, there was zero coughing. The air actually smells and feels fresh and we both slept incredibly well. Its very quiet, sleek looking, and Energy Star rated so I don't have to worry too much about using it 24-7.

The previous review said that it emits a strong plastic odor. That odor is present the minute you take it out of the box, like all new things made of plastic. After running it for about 18 hours, the smell is barely noticeable and I'm sure will continue to fade away. In fact, food odors get trapped in the bedroom every time I cook, but not last night! Its the only room in the house that doesn't smell like the garlicky beef I made for dinner. :)

My toddler and I both have severe allergies and asthma. To the point that over the past month we have both been having major issues with the pollen and smog in the air, even with being home most of the time! I ordered this one after doing A LOT of research, and I decided this was the best for the money. With a true HEPA filter that you replace once a year (opposed to once a month) it would save money in the long run. I chose this one for the den in our house and over the coming weeks we will be getting smaller ones for the bed rooms.

This review for right now is 24 hours in to having it on in the house, and later I will come back and add to it.

Set up was easy straight out of the box, and I put it out of traffic areas in the house. I was worried with where I put it there would be trouble for good air circulation, but it is doing great! In fact with it on high I noticed a tag on the other side of the room (directly across) was moving on one of the toys yesterday as I was cleaning. Then I cooked fish last night (our den has an open doorway to the kitchen), and I couldnt even smell it cooking!! I decided to test it this morning, and sat on the couch painting my nails. Even using nail polish remover I couldnt smell it!!! (which astounds me b/c I hate doing my nails simple b/c of the toxic fumes!!) As far as noise, its not that bad. On high, with the tv and with kids running around it is a little white noise and thats it. I sleep with the bed room doors open, and having a tower computer on in the den annoyed me, however on medium I couldn't even hear it in the den! It also moves a lot of air b/c even when the ac isnt blowing air, it feels like it is b/c of this tower! I am super excited at the thought of having better air quality in the house so we dont have as many issues, and I know it will take probably a good month for me to be able to judge that (and trust me I keep up with our flair ups b/c my son sees a specialist so I can tell you if it will make a difference or not). I also liked the UV light, since we have kids over to play all the time it makes perfect sense to have it to.

Also anyone that has lung issues, make sure to avoid any purifier that has the ion part (where you turn it on for a fresh smell) it actually causes lung problems (if you have underlying problems). Oh and check out the reviews on walmart . com for this purifier, it has hundreds of reviews and most are five star (which is one of the reasons I went with this model even though not everyone loved it on here).

Hi ALL! Sorry took me so long to come back and update =) Fortunately if you see below I did give a heads up three weeks in we still loved it. This unit is holding up well, and really does a good job! Since buying it (I guess going on six months ago now --WOW THAT WENT FAST!!) it helped with our asthma and allergies. Within the first month I stopped waking up with a stuffy nose, and it was taking particles out of the air so I wasn't seeing as much dust. I still would love to have them in each room, but that is on the back burner. Make sure you have enough for the sq footage of your room. We have since moved to a larger place, that has more sq footage in the den, and also two open doorways leading to other rooms. As such, this unit is doing really well for how much air it has availability to; when I should honestly probably should have one more in here. It isn't too loud, and I love the uv light. Within the first month of us having it we were exposed to someone (a visitor) that wound up having pneumonia. With the fact we have a higher risk of catching lung illnesses, I was really nervous. I think a big contributor to not catching it is because we had this unit running on high with the uv light. I highly recommend this unit, and I hope it helps! =)

We just about hit the year mark! Still working great and going strong! Make sure you wipe down (inside and out) once a month (as the book says). Still going strong, and working well! =) Buy this one, and you wont regret it!

After reading great reviews of this product, I decided to choose this HEPA filter for my son's room. He had been diagnosed with asthma and pet allergies and is now being treated for dust allergies as well. We have a dog that sheds copiously. This product shipped quickly and required no other assembly than just plugging it in. The unit is incredibly quiet and even when turned on high, just sounds like a fan is running (or similar to a laptop when the fan turns on to cool it down). I didn't notice an overwhelming or offensive plastic smell. The air seems so much cleaner and purified. It sounds weird, but the air in my son's room actually smells "cleaner". I am thinking of ordering a second unit to keep in the main living areas of our home. However, this unit is so lightweight and easily transported, that I have moved it from room to room. I have noticed a definite difference in my sons congestion and coughing since purchasing and installing this HEPA filter.

Made this purchase recently...first impressions are great.

I've had a better known brand name hepa air filter for 2 years and it worked fine, but was much louder, even on the lowest setting.

The Germ Guardian, on the lowest setting is extremely quiet, enough to sleep through without any issues.

The UV-C feature and price is what attracted me to this unit.

To note, when you turn on the UV feature, there is a cool blue light along the top edge (below chrome) that lights up to indicate that its on (UV-C). It may be distracting at night, but I just placed a strip of masking tape to cover.

Regarding the plastic smell that others have noted, I find it faint, and I'm assuming it'll go away after some use.

For the money, I don't think you'll find better. Extremely satisfied with the purchase.

Step 1: Take pak out of its plastic baggie.

Step 2: Place in humidor.

So simple and pretty accurate. Tested its RH using a digital and an analog hygrometer. The readings wavered between 69% and 71% at times, but they read 69% far more often. I will be buying this product forever or until it is discontinued. I can't comment on how long they actually stay "fresh" since I just bought them about two weeks ago. But I don't foresee having to come back and deduct any stars for that.
