Cigar Oasis XL Humidifier Review

Cigar Oasis XL Humidifier

I recently got a great new humidor for my cigars and I live in Colorado. It's almost impossible to keep the humidity up so I've been known to use a shot glass full of distilled water, drymistat tubes and several other options (all at the same time) to try and keep it up. The idea of an automatic humidifier appealed to me, but I didn't like the aesthetics of using a plug-in one and snaking the cable on the wall.

The Cigar Oasis appealed to me because it comes with both a battery pack and a power cord (with a small ribbon cable that can fit between the hings on your humidor).

I put new batteries in, set it to 70 and let it sit in my humidor for a week. My hygrometer in my humidor never went above 60, even tho the Cigar Oasis said it was 80%. I contacted support and they said it was set to 70% at the factory and that I should try it plugged in but that if I was confident in my hygrometer reading it included instructions for how to recalibrate it. I did that and messed with it daily for the next week or so and it never really helped.

2 weeks in it ran out of water (supposed to last at least 3 months). I refilled it with distilled water and the next day the batteries died (supposed to last 3-6 months).

I finally gave up and plugged it in. A couple days later it seems to be running perfectly, altho I now need to recalibrate it again. I hate the look of the plug, but what are you going to do?

So, end result, it works great plugged in. On batteries it sucks power and never quite works right.

This Aprilaire Water Distribution Tray model does a better job than its predecessor.

This may be the correct water distribution tray for your whole house humidifier, even if your humidifier is not the Aprilaire brand. For example, I use a Carrier HUMCCLFP1218-A whole house humidifier, and the 4246 Aprilaire Water Distribution Tray is the correct part for my Carrier brand humidifier.

Proper installation is quick and easy.

This is my 3rd Aprilaire 600 and they were all worth every penny. (The 600 used to be called the 600A, now both are automatic and the 600's electronics are slightly updated.) The 600 can be switched to manual mode, if desired.

My first unit was in my last house and was run for 2 years with no issues, then we moved. I just installed 2 in my current house (since I have 2 furnaces, 1 for each floor). I set it to humidity level #5 out of 7, which sets the relative humidity to 35% when the outdoor temperature is about 20 degrees F (details in the manual). The unit automatically turns on when the furnace is running and there is a call for more humidity. The unit can turn on your furnace blower in order to add humidity even when the furnace is not running, but I didn't want that option, so I didn't wire it in. If you do wire it in, there is a switch on the control unit so that you can turn it on or off.

Pros

* It's automatic and comes with an outdoor temperature sensor. This allows the unit to automatically adjust the humidity level so that you don't get condensation on your windows (condensation and the associated mold growth are why some home inspectors do not recommend humidifiers.)

* For us, it reduces nose bleeds and sinus infections.

* No standing water for mold to grow in. No individual room units to clean and refill.

* Works great, turn it on as the weather starts to get cold (also turn on the water to it and turn the lever to open the built in damper) and turn it off as the weather warms up.

* Low maintenance: Replace the water panel 1 time per year

* Low repair costs: There's no fan or extraneous parts. The only moving part is the valve that turns on and off the water. The value is quick and cheap to replace if it ever builds up enough sediment or mineralization to impede function.

* Low upkeep: The manual says to replace the water distribution tray and valve solenoid every ~5 years. All the parts are easy to access and relatively cheap. After 2 years my original water distribution tray showed no wear and I don't think it will really need to be replaced.

* Integrates with the electrical power in your furnace, so there's no extra wiring (assuming your furnace is new enough to have the jumpers.)

* Completely silent.

* Uses almost no electricity

* I did not notice a decrease in air flow coming out of vents throughout the house.

* Easy to install if you are handy. Our local Heating guys charge about $450 to install these and it only takes them 2 hours. I did it myself in about 4-6 hours. All the tools you really need are sheet metal snips, a good drill to put in sheet metal screws, a wrench for tightening plumbing connections, wire strippers, and ideally a 3/4" metal drill bit to install the electronic control. Installation instructions are included in the box, including wiring instructions. The instructions aren't idiot proof, but they're easy to follow for a handy person.

Cons

* Some water is wasted as unevaporated water does drain out the bottom. While I don't want water wasted, I actually think this is a preferable design. I don't want to waste electricity heating the water to create steam and I don't want a tray of standing water for mold or bacteria to grow in (the 400 model has a tray of standing water and no drain, but is otherwise the same as the 600.) I haven't noticed a change in my water bill since installing these units.

* A drain is required. I directed mine into my air conditioner's condensation drain which feeds to the sump pump. No problem. It it's a problem for you, try the 400 model.

Function

The unit works by taking air that has been heated by your furnace and passes it through a panel that has a small amount of water running across it. The water panel looks a bit like a radiator. The water on the panel evaporates into the hot air and gets distributed through your existing ductwork. That's it, nothing fancy. Note that, just like any humidifier, the unit is more efficient if you connect it to hot water rather than cold.

If you decide to install it yourself and go against the recommendation to have a professional do it, you'll also need the following:

#8 sheet metal screws

1/4" copper water line

1/2" ID clear vinyl tubing for drain

Clamp to attach the vinyl drain tubing to the humidifier

Small wire nuts

6" start collar for bypass connection

6" 90 degree elbow(s) for bypass connection

6" pipe for bypass connection

18-2 thermostat wire (a few feet of 18-5 may be helpful to go between the humidifier and your furnace, but 18-2 will work there as well)

Depending on your furnace, 2 quick disconnect electrical plugs may be needed to connect the included transformer to your furnace's power.

If furnace circuit board does not include humidifier accessory terminals an Aprilaire #50 Current Sensing Relay will be needed.

Optional Duct tape (don't use fabric tape, UL rated foil backed tape will last much longer and won't burn) or mastic will improve heating efficiency.

Optional you may want to feed the vinyl drain tubing inside a 3/4" PVC drain to make sure if doesn't get damaged or knocked out of your drain.

Aprilaire Model 600 Automatic Whole-house Bypass Humidifier with Digital ControlThis is a highly sophisticated humidifier. I consider myself to be a fairly handy homeowner but after receiving the item and reading the directions I opted to pay a professional for the install. I am glad that I did. I had estimates in my area to do the install between $250 and $350 over the cost of the unit.

Everything on this unit is automatic. A hard wire runs outside of the house to monitor the outside air temperature.

The only question that I had before I bought the unit was weather the 3 gallons per hour of water ran 24/7 or not. The answer is that it does not. A solenoid only lets the water run when the unit needs to add humidity.

I am more satisfied with this product than I expected to be.

Best Deals for Aprilaire Humidifier, 24V Whole House Humidifier w/ Auto Digital

It's a great product and it works extremely well when set to full automatic. The outdoor temperature sensor needs to be installed for automatic mode for proper relative humidity and to avoid window condensation. Yeah it takes some time to install it properly but well worth it. When it's set to automatic it will actually kick on your blower periodically even without a call for heat to get an accurate check of the humidity levels and stay on if they are low. The automatic mode helps tremendously after the heat runs and it needs to stay on for a bit to keep the levels accurate. I also found this setup to be useful in reducing cold spots in the house and to help maintain even temperatures kind of like a 2-stage furnace would. With a flip of a switch it can be set to manual and will only run if there is a call for heat and humidity is required. If you're going to spend the time to install one of these, I wouldn't settle for a unit that is not automatic. The 24vac transformer that was sent with the unit was pretty cheap; I tried to loosen one of the terminals and it broke the lead. Not worth a phone call so I just picked up one at the hardware store for $13. If you plan on using this for automatic purposes, then the transformer should be powered with constant power. I ran power down from the furnace power switch to the blower compartment where I mounted the transformer. That's also nice because when you shut down the furnace via the switch it also shuts down the humidifier and adds protection with the onboard furnace fuse. You will want to wire the transformer at the switch and not from any wires or furnace electronics after the switch (excluding a designed HUM accessory power lead). Like many others my furnace's Honeywell circuit board is equipped with a HUM accessory power lead and on my unit it is 120V so don't think you can bypass the use of a transformer if that's the case. But if your board is similar to mine the HUM power lead will only work if you plan on using it in manual mode as it's only powered when there is a call for heat; it is not powered when there is only a call for the blower or no call at all. Obviously the unit will be more efficient when supplied with heated air; as will be the case most of the time. But there are several studies that show a sufficient amount of humidity will be applied by just the blower moving ambient air through the unit. The manual does state that when set to automatic mode then the unit should be supplied with hot water and in general that is a good practice for the MOST efficient way to evaporate water and help keep the impurities from building up over time. But I couldn't justify the usage of energy that it takes to make that water hot and watch it go down the drain. Some studies show that the benefit is insignificant in supplying hot water over cold water. It's going to be up to you but I couldn't do it and the unit still works very well when supplied with cold water. Hope this helps some of you out in the decision process and I posted a few pictures of the install.

Honest reviews on Aprilaire Humidifier, 24V Whole House Humidifier w/ Auto Digital

So like others mentioned... the install guide(s) are a bit crude. Install took me just over 3hrs to do. I piggy backed of the 24v supply already there for the furnace. Used the hot water line for best performance. The tough spots were tin snipping the openings (now i have increadible grip strength) and fitting the 6" flex duct hose (must be a trick to it i don't know) to the unit and the flange. Make sure your sheet metal screws are long enough as mounting holes on the unit are raised. I used an earlier review which had a check list of supplies needed for this project and for once didn't have to make two trips to the hardware store (thanks!).

Some tips: To get the unit to work without the temp sensor in place make sure you select manual on the Digital controller (otherwise water won't flow and error message will show). Make sure you get enough wire (@ $.23 a foot better to have extra then to waste gas and time going back). Finally make sure you are at least 6" upstream from your unit with the Control mounting otherwise you will get higher moisture readings.

I was able to turn down the temp in the house 2 degrees and still felt it was too hot in the house (2,500sqft). I am sure i will be getting returns on this for a long time not to mention how pleasant the house feels.

The humidity hasn't been low enough yet to actually run this yet so I can't comment on its effectiveness (will update review later). However, installation was fairly easy if you are somewhat handy. Wiring in to furnace was a breeze with included wiring diagram. I mounted the 24VAC transformer in a junction box on the side of the furnace. I installed the unit on the cold air return due to concerns raised in other reviews about water dripping down in to the furnace. I opted to not use the saddle valve and chop my hot water pipe and solder in a T with a ball valve instead (not a fan of saddle valves).

This cigar box could probably be run over by a tank and not become damaged. Only thing I would add would be a small humidifier sponge in the top as some other larger boxes have.

I'll start off with the negative and then move on from there. I had the humidifier for about 4 months and then it broke. Wow, then...'why the 5 star review?' you may ask. Firstly, I'm not entirely sure it was the product's fault. There is a sleeve that you fill up with water, and my wife didn't necessarily set it in 'gently' one night. In any case, I contacted the company and wanted a replacement part and was even willing to pay for it. They asked for the serial number (and other things) and said it was out of warrenty (I threw away the receipt so I had no proof)... nevertheless, they said that they were going to replace it with a brand new unit. They sent me a new unit as well as a pre-paid return label to send back the old unit so that they can better develop the product and troubleshoot the issue. This is un-heard of service unless you are shopping at Williams and Sonoma. The new unit has worked fine ever since. The issue here is that, if you purchase this product and something does go awry, you are in good hands. The other benefit is that we purchased 2 other very expensive units from Germany, and although they're nice, they do not touch the ability to humidify the air like this unit does.

We bought this humidifier two years ago and were extremely happy with it. It was quiet, efficient, and got the room to a comfortable humidity (around 40%). Also, extremely stylish. Loved the look. We specifically spent a little more, hoping to get a humidifier we wouldn't have to replace after one or two seasons (our last one, a Crane penguin-shaped humidifier, started leaking after 3 years).

HOWEVER, the maintenance on this humidifier is a total pain. Nowhere before buying does it detail what you're supposed to do. If we'd known, I would have gone for a less needy unit! To summarize:

Daily maintenance:

Turn off and unplug it. Remove the tank. Take the housing to the sink and drain it. Wipe it clean and dry it. Drain the tank and rinse it. Refill the tank, drag the whole mess back to its shelf and set it up again.

Weekly maintenance:

Do the daily maintenance. Before you refill and put it all away, fill the base with vinegar and the tank with a bleach solution and let both soak. Scrub the base with the way too small brush they provide. Rinse THOROUGHLY, then reassemble.

Seriously? First of all, they boast of a memory feature, so you don't have to reprogram your settings... unless you unplug it. Which you're supposed to do daily. Real helpful. Second, I stopped keeping fish because I didn't want to spend an hour a week wrist deep in water.

As if all that weren't enough, after performing the excruciating maintenance routine, and then carefully putting it away for the summer, halfway through this winter it started making a whining noise when first turned on. If I turn it off and on about 20-30 times, it eventually will make that quiet whisper. Which would be fine, except that the machine has a very loud high-pitched beep every time you turn it on and off. And you better like that beep, because when the machine runs empty (or, as mine has decided to do lately, DECIDE that it's empty when the tank is completely full and there's water in the base), it beeps TEN TIMES. And then the light flashes UNTIL YOU TURN IT OFF. So if it suddenly decides to no longer be friends with the tank at say, 4am, you need to drag yourself out of bed and turn it off unless you like a glowing flashy light all night.

I contacted support, and they told me that it's out of warranty, which means they can't do anything for me. They were extremely polite and extremely unhelpful. Consider this a very expensive disposable humidifier, with care and maintenance like a family pet.

Best Deals for Bionaire Ultrasonic Humidifier BUL8000-UM

I have no problems with this product. It has a light dripping sound while it works but it sounds like water dripping after a heavy rain. I can't imagine a world where that would wake me up or bother me. Outside that it is super quiet.

It seems to be pumping out tons of water vapor.

Appearance wise, I think its the best option out there. Every other device I have seen is just ugly, and look like a humidifier.

The design keeps the it very low profile and I am not worried about my cats knocking it over.

It is really easy to fill.

I have not gotten to the point where I have to clean it yet.

The only thing I don't like is that it beeps pretty loud when you change the settings. If my wife is asleep while I am adjusting something, it can wake her up.

Pros:

The Lauderdale arrived pretty decently packaged lots of annoying styrofoam.

The build quality is good, its solid but not back-breaking heavy.

Cons:

There is a lock on the main door, but not on the top drawer.

This isn't sealed up very well around the openings or around the electrical outlet. I put on some self-adhesive foam weather strip I had laying around.

It took a while to season, but after the extra work sealing it up, the Laderdale maintains humidity quite well. I strongly reccoment a seasoning kit and an electronic humidifier. I used a Cigar Oasis Plus XL.

I have been searching for an essential oil diffuser plus humidifier that is easy to clean. I love this so much that I bought another. It puts out a good amount of moisture with the added benefit of essential oils. I use this mainly when the kids are sick. I put it right next to their bed (which I can't do with regular humidifiers which are cumbersome and will drench them) and add oils to help them breathe when they are congested and coughing. I have tried another diffuser that I bought on Amazon. It was awful in comparison. I am so happy to have found this one. You will NOT regret this purchase!

After researching many diffusers, I decided on this one. So far, I like it! The instructions were in English. It is easy to use and easy to clean. The colors change or you can choose a color to stay on, or no color at all. It is very quiet. The only "issue" I have which may not even be a big deal is that when you lift the lid to put more water or oil in, drops of water fall onto the counter/surface so I need to have a paper towel in my hand when I add to it due to it being on a wood surface. Also, I bought an essential oil set with it from someone else and used their "Relaxation" blend which my husband didn't like too well and it took several days to get the strength of the smell out of the house, so it definitely works!! If you are looking for less strong smells, lemon, orange, rose, and vanilla have worked so far. However, they don't seem as strong of course, but my husband isn't complaining anymore. :-) I hope that helps!

This is a very nice product that can be used to set the ambiance of a room, freshen the air, and help you to relax or to add humidity to the air for your health. The unit uses a 2.4 MHz ultrasonic piezo activated diaphragm to atomize the water and fragrance that you put into the water reservoir. It releases a fine mist of water or water and fragrance to create the ambiance you want according to how you are feeling.

In addition you can turn on the internal LED lighting system and add color to the experience that is really attractive. My wife fell in love with this humidifier immediately. You add water into the chamber and it will hold up to 500 mL of water. The side of the tank is clearly marked to indicate the number of mL of water in the tank to help you mix in the right amount of fragrance oil. We used distilled water. You can also add fragrance and you can purchase many types to suit your favorite fragrances or mood. You add 2 or 3 drops of fragrance per 100 mL of water. The fragrance oils are not included in with the humidifier.

What's in the box:

* The atomizer/humidifier

* The instruction manual

* A measuring cup

* The AC power wall adapter with a 6 foot long power cable.

The AC power adapter is UL approved and it is rated to operate on 100 to 240 VAC and 50/60 Hertz. You can turn on the accent LED lighting and it is very attractive. The light colors will change from white to green to yellow to red to purple to blue and start over again. It changes colors about every 5 seconds. The light can also be turned off. The unit can be set to operate for 60 minutes, 120 minutes and 180 minutes or continuously. To set the operating time you have to press the mist button multiple times to get the setting you want and a LED will light up and indicate the setting you have selected. The unit will not operate the atomizer without water and it will shut off when it is empty. You can set the unit to generate mist and create mist at a high or low rate.

If you are not going to use the unit for a while it is advised that you drain out the water in the tank. You can also wash the inside of the tank with a mild detergent and dry it but do not submerge the unit into water. The top of the unit is made with PP plastic and the base is made from ABS plastic.

This beautiful and functional unit has many applications for your home or office and it fits into any setting. You are generating this aroma mist and or humidity without heat by using the ultrasonic piezo diaphragm that is safe and quiet to use. Not using heat on the fragrance helps produce a mist without heating and changing its smell.

This is a very nice product and I rate it at 5 stars.

I was supplied a unit for test and evaluation and I promised to provide a fair and honest review.

Honest reviews on MIU COLOR™ Color Changing Aroma Diffuser Ultrasonic Humidifier

I've been looking for a while for a diffuser that I can use with my essential oils in my work office. I read the reviews on this one and decided that it was worth a try. It came in about a week. I was surprised at the size when I opened the box, apparently I hadn't read the information on it. I expected it to be much bigger, but I am loving the size..it's not big and bulky like I thought it might be. I got nervous thinking that it ran on batteries because there was no power cord in the box, but it was neatly packed away INSIDE the unit. Who woulda thought to look there? LOL!! It gives out a really good amount of vapor. I'm trying it out at home before I take it to the office. I filled it to the maximum amount of water (500ml) and I ran it for an entire day and it was still half full, which I really like! I put it in my bedroom and within about 10 minutes the vapors had found themselves to my kitchen (my other diffusers don't work that good). I am loving it so much that I plan to order a couple for my house and I have already suggested them to family and friends. The instructions say to clean it every 4 or 5 days with citric acid..gotta find me some!!

I love keeping a vaporizer going, especially in the dryness of winter. I like what it does for my skin and having some moisture in the air helps my sinuses and healthy for the lungs. I had previously had the greenair spa vaporizer. Hmmm...in fact I had four of them. Two from Amazon and then when those two (one for my daughter and one for me) went to the vaporizer graveyard (in less than 6 months each) , I found two more on clearance.( I know, I know, but they were such awesome little machines!) , those also lasted less than 6 months. So this time I decided to spend a little more money. I hope this machine lasts, because it is awesome at diffusing my essential oils and really throws out a nice vapor. It has settings to run from 30 minutes to just "on" Nice selection of lighting..blues, greens, reds, white or none at all. Holds more water than the greenair unit did and lasts about 10 hours each fill, then it automatically shuts off if on the "on" position. It is much quieter than the greenair unit as well.

Update: Well, it no longer works and has joined the vaporizer graveyard. I am very upset as I really liked this vaporizer. I had it approximately 2 months until it no longer emits vapor at all. The lights still work (yippee) and I hear the motor humming....just no vapor. I believe I even paid 15 dollars more than what is stated here, so for the low, low price of 40 dollars per month I had vapor. Yep, I am totally feeling ripped off, as the window for returning/replacing the item is closed (a whole month window). Now I am left wondering if it is a coincidence that they only give you a month to return/replace when the product only last two months? I don't know, but what I do know is I treated this thing with kid gloves and followed all instructions to a tee, as I wanted it to last. My advice is to stay away from this vaporizer and if anyone knows of a good quality vaporizer that is time tested, I would greatly appreciate it if you would leave a comment and let me know the name of it.
