Rather than buying an overpriced humidifier with a built-in humidistat that doesn't work, I opted for this. The built-in humidistat, NEVER works, and it's been my experience and that of others. Simply state, it is a poor engineering decision because the device can never get an accurate measurement of humidity if it is so close to the source, yet the stupid manufacturers keep on doing it, merely to jack up the price, and the end users have the common complaint of the humidifier having only two states: either on all the time or off all the time.

This one solves the problem. It comes out of the factory quite accurate. I checked it against a couple of hygrometers I trust, and when I placed them at exactly the same spot, the measurement of this device was spot on.

Couple of tips I give other users:

1) Relative humidity measurement can be affected significantly by the position of the measurement device in the room. That's not only because humidity distribution may not be uniform in the room, but more importantly because relative humidity depends largely on the temperature, and you'll have temperature differences between different spots in the room, especially in cold winter when you're heating the room. So, place the humidifier controller in an outlet as close as practical to the point where you want to regulate humiditiy, and definitely not close to your heater.

b) Given how sensitive the measurement is to temperature, be carefuly if you place the device against a cold wall. Again, very possible during winter, if the wall is not internal to the house, but rather a wall that separates your room from the outside. If this happens, then know that the device will be measuring relative humidity thinking that the temperature is actually lower than it is inside your room, which causes the humidity measurement to be higher than it should, it could cause the device to turn off the humidifer before the desired humidity is reached. If this placement is unavoidable, the solution is:

a. Plug the device where you want.

b. Give it a few minutes to stabilize and take an accurate read.

c. Compare its measurement against that of a hygrometer you trust that is placed at the point where you want to regulate humidity.

d. The difference in the reading between the two is a good rough estimate of the amount of correction you need to do when setting the humidifier controller. E.g. if your trusted hygro reads 35%, and this controller reads 42% (because it is placed at a non-ideal position), and you want to improve your humiditiy to 40%, then you set your controller to 47%.

Pros:

It works well. It keeps your plug-in humidifier or vaporizer running until the room humidity reaches whatever percent you set.

Cons:

-There is no way to calibrate it. However, this can be overcome by testing it and then adding or subtracting the difference when setting what humidity you want. On arrival mine was only a couple of percentage points higher than my properly calibrated hygrometer.

-It needs to be placed about half way up to the ceiling and away from anything producing heat in order to get a good reading.

i have two legs of prosciutto hanging in a spare bedroom and i use this product in junction with a small fan and a humidfier(both on a power strip plugged into the humidistat) set at 65% humidity and it works greatvery simple and easy to use

Honest reviews on Dayton 1UHG3 Humidifier Control, Plug In, 120 V

The good news is it does turn on and off automatically. The Bad news is I know for a fact that my sausage drying room is at 72% humidity. The Dayton Humidifier control is reading 58% humidity. I am still trying to figure out the differance so I can make adjustments. I do not believe you can calibrate this??? Today was the first day I used it and I am still running up and down the stairs periodically checking the humidity levels... Not there yet. I really do not care if I know it is off by 10% and make adjustments accordingly but I would have to say that it is not a good product and I may return it if I can not get a reliable result.

So far this humidifier control is working perfectly.

Have had it one month and turns on and off very accurately. Have two humidistat's that I compare it with and it controlling the humidity accurately.

Needed this to control humidity in my older home, in the winter, here in Michigan. Would recommend between 40 and 45 percent. Don't want air in home to low in winter because of dry air, but if too high, I get breathing problems (nose) caused by condensate forming in various area of house (mold???). Window panes, wood window sashes, cold room corners, basement brick walls, etc.

After several years of service, the filter element in my Hunter humidifier became rather nasty, plus I'm sure it wasn't as effective as when it was new, due to the accumulation of crud from hard water. The new one fit perfectly, and seems to do exactly what it's supposed to do. When this one reaches its end-of-service, I'll buy another, if they're still available.

I run the humidifier all winter to keep my acoustic guitars at the proper humidity.

This is the same filter that came with the unit from the Factory and brought new life to an older humidifier of mine. They install easily, last a long time and are sturdy metal with silver coating (I believe) which is for anti-bacterial / microbial filtering.

We just got this humidifier to replace a decades old Bionaire that finally died the other day.

While this has one minor fault, it's quiet, efficient and actually nice looking! Our old unit wasn't as attractive, I admit.

CONS:The capacity on this machine is small, you have to refill at least 3 times a day if you leave the machine on 24/7.

The water makes a very quiet light bubbling sound periodicallyit won't keep you awake or distract from daily activities.

PROS: The water tank is easy to manueverwhich is much nicer than hauling an immense filled tank around!

The machine is filterlessa light and quick rinse is all that you need to do to keep it clean.

The machine is made in pale, clean colors, and the water tank is almost colorlessthis machine looks clean and nice.

The machine has an auto shut offit won't burn itself out trying to run dry.

Now, I would have spent far more on a machine but saw this one and decided to try it outwe're so happy with it we're buying a second one for the first floor!

After pouring over reviews I decided on this unit for it's size and brand. I previously owned a Vicks (Kaz) brand which worked for a while but started leaking and suffered from excessive hard water build up. Here are the pros and cons of this unit.

Pros

1.) Heater units sits on top and is immersed into the water. The result is there is much less build up on the heater itself. It all falls into the resavoir where it is easily cleaned. This alone is a selling point over other brands.

2.) Large tank, this unit will run the full ten hours on high.

3.) Hydrometer to set desired humidity (see Cons no.2)

Cons

1.) Some noise, although to be fair this is typical for all warm mist humidifiers because they boil water. For me it's soothing except for the ocasional water cooler like 'glub'. If your a very particular sleeper who can't tolerate any noise then stay away from all warm mist humidifiers. to be honest though this is actually kinda soothing.

2.) The heater comes with a 'hydrometer' which should allow you to set the humidity level which you would like to keep the room at. This is a very cool feature if it worked. In my case it never changes (tested it a steamed out bathroom). I'm in the process of contacting Holmes for a replacement I will update on how this goes.

Overall I would buy this unit again, even if the hydrometer didnt' work. However I'm a little miffed at this point.

UPDATE:

Contacted holmes and explained the product fault (told them I tested in a steamed out shower and the humidistat didn't work. They were actually very prompt in sending out a new unit, however they sent out a HM5305 which I guess must be the upgraded version as this one isn't even in stock anymore. Long story short it works well with the humidistat I can set it and it will go on and off as needed. Other than that I give Holmes and this unit high marks.

The product arrived as scheduled so pleased with seller. My husband and I used it one week during our visit to our son's house (guest room is in his basement next to the furnace room). The humidifier definitely helped at night as our throats and noses could attest the next morning. Although the machine was fairly quiet, I'm a light sleeper and kept noticing a "pop pop pop" sound--almost as though someone was popping popcorn.

The tank was clear and held enough water for several night's use. A little awkward to fill because the top isn't flat but not a big problem. I do believe the "warm mist" did make the room feel warmer. One complaint is that there are no markings on the humidity level dial (just lines). Have to guess where to set.

My 2-year grandson now uses the humidifier in his bedroom (second floor). Definitely helps with his congestion as he frequently has colds and stopped up nose.

Humidifier given a 4-star rating due to popping noise (I'm sensitive) and lack of markings on humidity level dial. Would recommend based on features and attractive price.

I'm pretty sure the image displayed on this page is a Holmes 5601 or 5602 model humidifier that has a 1.8 gallon tank ( which has been discontinued, I think). This image that SHOULD BE on this page (see product details section) is a HM5250 that has a smaller 1 gallon tank.

I would rate the old 5601/5602 highly I could get through the night on one tank of water when set on high. I rate the 5250 lower due to the really small tank that has to be refilled OFTEN when using the high setting.

I didn't expect much for the low price, but still disappointed. The water overflows from the reservoir at the bottom and pours out all over the floor or table. I've tried three times now and the same results. I've followed directions closely. Just a bad design. The plastic is so thin that nothing fits as tightly as it should. I'm returning mine today.

In the past, I have been very disappointed with humidifiers. Either they leak or don't seem to do much of anything. However, this Holmes U Tower humidifier is sleek in design and has a few nice features such as:

The two filters are easily accessible at the base of the unit.

The tank is easy to handle, fill, and not too heavy to carry. If you have a small sink, you can always fill this slightly long tank in the bathtub or by using a teapot or water jug.

You have the option to set the humdifier manually on low, medium, or high humidity continuously or you can set it to automatically go on at low, medium, or high at a pre-set humidity level. If you use the automtic feature, then the unit cycles on and off like a thermostat would (although it does that too frequently for my taste).

In addition, the display shows the humidity of the room the unit is in, which is a nice feature.

The humidity level increases pretty fast, which is not typical of other units I've experienced.

According to the manual (I haven't tried this feature), you also have an hour timer option of setting the unit to turn on or off after so many hours. This means, for example, you can program it to turn off 5 hours later or turn on 5 hours later.

The unit has a small footprint (see cavaet below), so it doesn't take up much floor space.

With regard to the operation of the unit, you must remember to press and hold the on/off button to turn off the unit. If you unplug the unit, the humidifier returns to its factory default settings so you'll have to quickly reprogram it every time. This is exceptionally easy to do, but some might find this annoying.

One very nice feature that remains in operation when turning off the unit from the front panel but leaving it plugged in is that the humidity of the room is always displayed. Obviously, you lose this benefit when you unplug the humidifier from the wall outlet.

When setting the unit to the automatic feature that enables it to operate like a thermostat, the unit may cycle on and off every few seconds or minutes depending on the humidity of the room, which means you'll hear the fan cycle on and off repeatedly. If this is likely to disturb you while sleeping, then just put the unit into manual mode as I find you can never have too much humidity in the winter anyway. Of course, make sure you have enough water in the tank to run all night. The tank is rated to hold water for 36 hours of continuous use. However, I have only been able to get 10 hours continuous use on a tank at the highest humidity setting so keep this in mind when leaving the unit unattended.

I ordered the wick filters from the manufacturer because they are hard to find elsewhere; even though Wal Mart and other local stores carry the Holmes line, they don't necessarily sell all the filters for every model. The filters arrived promptly within a few days.

The box says the unit comes with a 5-year limited warranty but the pamphlet inside says a 3-year limited warranty. I called Holmes at 1-800-546-5637 and they confirmed it was actually a 3-year limited warranty, so don't be swayed by the box advertising.

There is one caveat that you might consider important, although this would not deter me from buying the unit. Since this unit is a tower model, it is easier to knock over (especially on an unsturdy surface such as carpet). You might want to take this into consideration in case you have young kids that run around or large pets that might wreck havoc in your house--meaning you may have to alter the placement of the unit to account for this scenario. My observation is that the chances of knocking this unit over are somewhat higher than the squat-to-the-floor models I'm so use to and which have been so ineffective.

Overall, I am very impressed with the unit compared to the four other humidifiers I've had previously. I had a Vicks humidifier, a different Holmes humidifier, a Hunter humidifier, and another one whose name I can't remember. I've always been less than satisfied, so this is a nice change. I've been so pleased with this unit that over six months later, I ordered a second one.

Update October 2010 Finally one of my unit's humidity sensors failed. However, since I've had this unit for several years that is to be expected. I can still use the unit to increase the humidity in the room but I just won't know what the humidity level is unless I look at my second humidifier.

Love the unit itself, however after 3 days of running it only 8 hours a night, I noticed the filter guage was saying "Replace Filter"

So I called the company to say, "hey .. it's only been 3 days. I think the filter guage is broken" and they had me check the filter (it was yellow and crusty) and they said, "no .. it's your water. you need to replace your filter or use distilled water." Then she laughed and said they had customers that replace their filters several times a week because of their water

So of course I'm not going to replace my filter every 3 days and I'm not going to use a couple gallons of distilled water every night before I go to bed in this thing ...

so if you have hard water .. this may not be the unit for you. Buyer Beware.

Pros:

displays humidity all the time

variable speed settings. 3 manual and 3 auto speed.

tower design does not take up too much space.

easy to add water and change filter.

Cons:

due to the size (length) of the tank, you do need a deep sink to add water. I use the bath tub.

the fan is loud even at lowest setting.

uses two filters.

Honest reviews on Holmes HM630-NU Cool Mist Tower Humidifier

This product seemed to have been designed by someone who had never used a humidifier before. The water tank is nearly impossible to fill; there's nothing to hold on to once the tank is upside down, and the opposite end is sloped so you can't rest it against the bottom of your bathtub while it fills. Once it's full, a juggling act is required in order to screw on the tank lid, since you can't set the tank down anywhere. After trying twice and only succeeding in spilling water all over myself and the bathroom, I left this task for my husband to take care of, as he has very large hands and was able to fill the tank more easily, although he too complained that the tank was so poorly designed.

The tank capacity is too small; to keep my bedroom at a good humidity level, we have to refill the tank twice a day. Still, the thing did what it was meant to do--humidified the room--until after three weeks the full tank leaked all over the wood floor and area rug. We thought the top must not have been screwed on correctly, but it happened again, warping the wood floor. Leaving the full tank in the bathtub, it didn't leak at all, which made us think that something had gone wrong with the base.

I didn't waste my time trying to get this thing fixed. I returned it.

I love this humidifier! It is quiet and gives off a lovely mist. Great for my allergies and dry-night coughs. Would do 5 stars but for two things, it's green LCD light is too bright and I have to cover it with a bean bag or it hurts my eyes while I sleep. And the water does run out in the middle of the night so I have t get up to refill it. Despite those two things, this is the best humidifier I have ever owned. If they make a 12 hour one with no green on/off light, I'll buy it and give this one to a friend. The light does turn red when the water is out, and that's really neat.

This humidifier works well with my nose. But when there's no more water it makes This ANNOYING clicking sound around 4:00 in the morning and its impossible to sleep through

Best Deals for Pure Guardian H920BL Ultrasonic Table Top Humidifier with Beaker

I was uncertain about this purchase because of the mixed reviews. But, a friend has a larger humidifier by this brand that he recommended, so I gave it a shot.

I have tried a few humidifiers over the last few years with bad results. My expectations were therefore low and also very simple:

quiet

no bright lights (so I could sleep with it on)

easy to fill up and clean

well made (it holds water and its on furniture lets not have any leaks!)

I really couldn't be happier.

The unit is quiet -unless right by your head in a silent room, you will not hear it. There IS a very slight click when the unit turns off from low water. However, mine does not click on and off and even if it did, the click isn't loud enough to bother me.

The LEDs inside the power button are green when on but so dim you can barely see it. Even if it was on my nightstand it wouldn't bother me, and I'm light-sensitive (unable to sleep with an alarm clock screen on in hotels, etc). The red "out of water" LED is brighter than the green power light, but still not bright enough to both me, and by the time it comes on it is usually sun-up out, so the light doesn't matter. The reviewers who talk about the bright light may be talking about the "night light" feature which is a blue LED that actually lights up the water canister and is quite bright. However, this is easily turned off completely by pressing the power button again: press power once, low speed no nightlight. Twice: low speed, nightlight on. Three times: high speed, nightlight on. Four times: high speed, nightlight off.

We run it on high speed and it is usually out of water when I wake up ~8 hours later. Not always, but usually. I imagine it would run the full 10 hours on low speed.

More than anything, the things that bothered me most with previous humidifiers was the poor design & poor build quality. I hated units that were built in such a way that every night I dreaded filling it up -for instance if the container was hard to fit under the water faucet, or if the thing dripped all over as you carry it across the room to refill. Or, if the way it was built was so cheap feeling you thought it might crack or leak.

Luckily none of these complaints apply. The water talk lifts off easily and doesn't drip. It is small and easy to fill. It also reinstalls easily.

Best of all it works every time I use it. Those complaining of it only working once may be overfilling the base -I've learned not to do that with all the various models I've tried. If the item doesn't make mist but it making a sound, lift up the water tank and use a paper towel to remove some of the water in the base. Reinstall the tank and it should work immediately.

I bought a different brand of larger humidifier for the living room and may return it and buy a larger one from pure guardian instead. I dread dealing with refilling the crane living room model in comparison.

Yes, I would recommend this product.

They claim all sorts of stuff about being making germ proof containers etc. But overall this is a bad product. it doesnt even let you sleep with the constant humming noise. Pure Guardian products are a complete waste of time unless maybe used during the day when noise may not be such an issue. But then the very purpose of buying this product is to use it at night when one is sleeping to humidify the room. An absolute waste of money in my opinion!!!!.

This product really is the identical kit to the dealer but at one-half the cost. The Lennox PureAir pleated filter needs to be changed each year or so. Install is simple: unplug the unit, pull off the cover and pull out the carrier, replace parts, then button back up hardest part is opening the box. Just take care in handling the lamp and don't bend the metal filter. The cost should be lower for what it is: filter pack, UV lamp, metal VOC catalyst. You can also buy the filter pack alone to replace annually and I go two years on the catalyst and lamp and see no issues (As an engineer, I also own a VOC monitor).

The PureAir system has made such a noticeable difference in my home's air quality, so we stick with it and the high maintenance costs associated with having two separate HVAC systems.

I don't even know why they still make the non-airwashing filters. These Honeywell HAC-504 Replacement Filter for Honeywell Humidifiers really do take a lot of the dust out the air, but more importantly these filters holdup a lot longer than the HONEYWELL/ENVIRACAIRE HAC-504 Replacement Filter Pad ones do, and they really aren't that much more expensive. These filters are mislisted though, their real part number is HAC-504AW, the "AW" is for "Air Washing", because for the blue layer of filter material.

For years I have been delighted with these replacement filters for my Honeywell humidifier. Unfortunately the manufacturer has recently made a product change that I find very disappointing, the filter's thickness has been reduced in half while keeping the price unchanged. This of course then cuts in half the amount of wet area exposed to the air stream making the humidier less effective!

Best Deals for Honeywell Humidifier Wick Filter, Single, HAC-504AW

We run two humidifiers all year round here--it's dry in the desert--and these filters are MUCH better than the reg ones. It's worth a little more to get these. That blue stuff on the outside helps them last longer and filter the air better.

Honest reviews on Honeywell Humidifier Wick Filter, Single, HAC-504AW

This filter appears to be a genuine Honeywell filter but is much thinner and does a poor job of evaporating the water. The previous filter would empty a 1.5 gallon tank in 24 hrs. With this filter it is 1/2 full 24 hrs. later. See my video for direct comparison. I suspect the other 1 and 2 stars reviews do not realize this is a different filter. I searched the box and both say Honeywell HAC-504aw. It appears to be made by Honeywell. Honeywell go back to the old filter or I will get a different brand of humidifier.

I am very disappointed in this replacement filter. I put it in my humidifier, noticing it was noticably thinnner but thinking it probably didn't matter. My humidifier put out significantly less moisture. I thought my humidifier was just getting old (which it was) and replaced it with a new one, HCM-630, which worked much better. (My new humidifier came with a MUCH thicker filter which I used.) I ended up buying another HCM-630 and put one of these replacement filters in it just to test it out. The new humidifier put out about HALF the moisture with the thinner replacement filter. I thought I had a humidifier problem, but i had a filter problem (expensive mistake!) Anyway, I think the manufacturer should say on the humidifier, "3 gallons of output a day WITH THE ORIGINAL FILTER ONLY" (you can't buy a "replacement" filter that's as thick as the original one... this HAC-504AW is the official replacement). I am going to be calling the manufacturer to complain.

This replacement set of filters fits my emerson and essex console humidifier and does a great job of filtering the air. However, it does not wick up much water as the pure paper ones so it defeats the purpose of having a humidifier. Since I replaced these with the stock paper only filter/wicks, I get over twice as much water into the air in 24 hours. I would not recommend these if you want humidity in the air from the humidifier. Look for the accordion paper ones.

Had a new furnace installed and these were the filters the installer recommended. These are not a direct replacement for your fiberglass panel filters that most people have on their furnaces. You need a special housing to hold them and I had it installed with the new furnace, though I am sure it can be retrofitted to an existing heating system. Much better than those generic fiberglass filters. Noticeable reduction in dust when cleaning the house.

Met and exceeded expectations. Good quality product. Many on the market but this one works well. Would have preferred blue but green was fine.

This is a very quiet machine. Works well but the water reservoir does not hold very much water and it is not an easy refill. I would call it awkward. You have to take the tank off the base and water always drips, then unscrew the filter (large white cylinder in the picture) and then fill from the bottom (upside down under a tap). Then you have to screw the filter back in and turn it back right-side up. Water invariably drips on the floor again no matter what one does.

I have a second one in the bedroom and it is very quiet and seems efficient. Just wish it were more user friendly for filling. The real test will be to see how long it lasts. My last humidifier made it through only one year.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: Tank broke the second time we used it. I called Sunpentown, however, and they were quite pleasant on the phone. They said they think it is the fan, based on what I described, and promised to send me another fan to see if I could replace it myself at home by taking apart the motor compartment with screwdriver. If not, I will have to send in the motor portion and pay for the shipping myself. That was 3 weeks ago. I emailed them again and they apologized and said they will get the fan out shortly. So far, I'm not impressed with this.

Having said this, I am very sad this is not working out because the design of the tank is AMAZING for cleaning. The hole is HUGE. This it totally unlike the Crane humidifiers shaped like animals. Invariably, my spouse or I neglect to empty the tank and then we end up with funk in the tank and no great way to clean it. Bleaching it seems counterproductive, as the tank will then end up smelling like bleach, etc. I tried cleaning the funk out with vinegar. Didn't do anything. So I was desperate for a new solution and this Sunpentown looked easy to clean.

So...I'll update everyone on what happens with Sunpentown customer service and whether or not they will fix this.

UPDATED REVIEW: See the comments section. Sunpentown sent the fan and a relative with mechanical experience and a special tool fixed it, so I didn't have to ship it back. Has been working nicely for months. Tank is so awesome and easy to clean. I am a woman and I can literally insert my entire hand into the tank to clean it :)
