I had been pricing and comparing the substantial number of humidifiers on the market and I am glad I settled on the Air-O-Swiss. Despite its higher price, I am quite satisfied with its functions, control, design and specifically, its quiet operation. I was looking to pay between $70-150 for a quiet, low-maintenance model to add humidity to my [very dry] 10x12' bedroom. I purchased it at a local store for the same price as listed on Amazon; I am glad I was able to see [and hear] this model in operation.

There is NO sound, even at the highest setting. I'm a light sleeper and cannot fathom a bedroom appliance that even approaches a dull hum.

The visible mist generated by this model is pleasant for me and my pets.

I have been refilling each morning, as I have had the device on a high setting and running nonstop. The compartment becomes about half-empty after a full day at this setting. Refilling is a snap.

The ability to have cool and warm settings is a big plus, since the jury is still out regarding the negatives and rewards of either mode.

The system has been running clean and I am certain this will continue to be the case with a modicum of effort. The cost of the filter and the silver stick is not intimidating and the recommended three-week maintenance check is reasonable.

The design is quite fetching. Minimalist and fetching.

I have it sitting on the floor and there is no dampness on the carpet as mentioned by owners of other brands. This tells me that this model is doing a good job of propelling the mist into the air.

My roommate recently paid $29 for a smaller Holmes humidifier. The Holmes is downright deafening and I am sure she would have paid the difference for an Air-O-Swiss. Silent operation is really important.

The only possible shortcoming is the hygrometer. It is not entirely intuitive: the machine is to shut off after the desired humidity percentage is met, yet I have yet to see the model shut itself off. Turning it off manually is not a big deal.

I took a big step purchasing an air purifier, but this purchase has made a significant difference in my bedtime and bedroom comfort. I've had some winter nights with seriously labored [allergy, smoke and pet-related] breathing but I find this device has given me a little peace of mind and tangible change.

With not having much experience with buying humidifiers, I purchased this one based on some online research and with the help of user reviews. I was very worried about the noise factor that comes with having a cool mist humidifier but this one passes with flying colors. I'm a very light sleeper and require almost total silence in order to fall asleep. I can't even tell that this machine is in the same room! I love the fact that it can be switched from cool to warm mist at the press of a button and that I can control the amount of mist and how fast or slow it comes out. The only downfall that I've experienced is how difficult it is to keep clean. The still water that sits in the unit's base will have a black build up. This same build up is located at the base of the blue, water-holding section, as well as the tube and attachment the mist comes out of. The machine comes with a small brush, which does not do the job. By running pressurized water over the build up and using a long tubular bristle brush I can get the unit semi-clean. If any one has a better method, please let me know.

This product has a fatal flaw it has a mechanical hygrostat to control humidity. It's basically a spring loaded device. It doesn't work reliably. You set the humidity level one day, but as the spring adjusts to its own tension, its humidity control stops being accurate.

I had to return my unit 3 times. Each time they replaced the return with a brand new unit. But each one eventually manifested the same problem. *It is a design defect.* Fortunately, the device has a three-year warranty. If you are the type of person who demands that their purchased products work as expected, you will need this warranty. I had to return my unit at the end of every season.

Unfortunately, the company threatened to stop honoring the warranty because I had returned the unit so many times. Rather than send me a unit which would work reliably, they took the tact of blaming me for returning the defective units. They never claimed that the units that I returned were working at spec.

You may not notice the problem if you have the unit in a large room, but in my case it was used in a small, approx 8' x 12' room with a closed door. At the lowest humidity level setting, the room would eventually get very humid, the level couldn't get dialed down, and I had little control over the level of humidity. Because the unit doesn't have a digital readout of the humidity level, most people wouldn't notice this. But I checked the level against a stand-alone humidistat.

If the hygrostat worked, I'd give the unit 4 stars it's otherwise a fine device. I'd echo the sentiment about the tank. I think someone in Marketing told the engineers to design the tank with a visually appealing rounded top. But it's a pain to refill. You have to always hold onto it while filling it. It will not stand up on it's own. It is cumbersome to refill and will fall over if you let go of it. It's always a two-handed operation to fill.

My advice would be to try one of their units with a digital humidity level readout. I haven't tried them myself, but I'm guessing that the hygrostat on those models will be more accurate and thus, useful.

Honest reviews on Air-O-Swiss AOS 7133 Ultrasonic Humidifier - Warm and Cool Mist

I am very happy with this purchase. I can't imagine another unit outperforming this one.

Pros:

1)High design; the prettiest, sleekest humidifier you'll find. Everyone who sees it compliments me on it and it's become a very popular acquisition.

2)High output: produces a thick, steady stream of humidity. When on highest setting, outpaces volume of other cheaper units.

3)Great customer service: I had a hairline fracture in the water tank and the Air-O-Swiss folks replaced it within days; it was very fast service and completely hassle free.

Cons:

1)After 2 weeks, I discovered a fracture in the water tank causing water to leak out onto the table.

2)No hygrometer/hygrostat display so there's no way to know for sure what degree of dryness you need to compensate for.

3)Water tank is a little on the small side and needs to be refilled often Very often if highest volume setting is used.

This humidifier is fantastic but I cannot get rid of the white dust. Despite the fact I'm replacing the desmineralization cartridge regularly, this humidifier is producing a lot of white dust.

Pros:

1. It actually turns on. I got this unit after my Crane Adorable Humidifier (Penguin shape) refused to turn on.

2. It just works. I have a 10x13 room and this humidifier took my room's humidity from 21% to 42% in about 3 hours.

3. I really like the form factor. The unit is only 5.31 inches deep so it can easily fit on top of a short bookcase that also has a small depth. Few other humidifiers would fit where I have this humidifier right now.

4. It is fairly easy to fill. The top of the tank is flat so that when you turn the tank upsidedown to fill it, it can lie flat.

5. I'm pretty happy with the mist quality. Even on the highest setting, you're not going to see fat droplet sizes coming out. You are not going to end up with a puddle on the floor as long as you put it on a surface at least 2 feet above the floor.

Cons:

1. Some reviewers have complained about water leaking out of the tank. I noticed that on my unit, the washer (or o-ring) for the tank cap is a little bit too big. If you turn the cap shut too tightly, the o-ring will roll on itself, and the next time you unscrew the cap and screw it back on, the washer may not provide a good seal because it is out of place. Even the manual tells you to make sure the washer is in place when screwing on the cap. As long as the washer is in place, it won't leak. This is just a slight annoyance.

2. If you are blowing warm mist and you want to change it back to cool mist, it'll take awhile for it to become cold again because the unit does not actively cool the water. You'll have to either pour out the existing warm water in the base or wait until all the warm water in the base gets sent out. I am not a big fan of warm mist so it's a non-issue.

3. The unit is fairly quiet and I am pretty sure most people can sleep with the unit on without a problem. However, I am an ultra-sensitive sleeper and anything louder than completely silent is too much for me. If it was the just the humming noise, I think I would be able to take it, but what bothers me the most is the inevitable random water sounds caused by the ultrasonic plate generating large droplets of water and those droplets of water coming back down. Almost every humidifier will do that. The water noise is fairly low, it is just the randomness of the noise that annoys me when I try to sleep. When I am awake and my computer is on, I barely notice the humidifier because my computer is many times noisier than the humidifier and my computer is already pretty quiet.

Tradeoffs:

1. Yes, the tank is only 4 liters, but do you want a humidifier that fits on a bookcase or not?

2. Sure, the tank only last 12 hours on the maximum setting, but isn't that the point of a humidifier? If you desperately want humidity, wouldn't you want the humidifier to empty the tank as quickly as possible?

Other thoughts:

It is nice that this unit comes with a water filter, but of course the manual will recommend that you fill it with distilled water rather than tap water. Considering that I'll be breathing the water I put into the humidifier, I've been filling my tank with water that I've passed through a Brita filter in a water pitcher. However, doing that is somewhat a pain because it takes multiple pitchers to fill up the tank. I am thinking about getting a faucet filter so that I can fill the tank quickly.

UPDATE: My 10x13 room just hit 50% relative humidity and I'm loving it. My windows are starting to fog up, maybe I should turn it off.

I got this for my son and it is the best humidifier yet.

I've tried a bunch of inexpensive ultrasonic, evaporation, and heating element based units but this one is the first that actually went ALL night.

It has a output volume knob that actually works: High is as thick as pea-soup fog and low is merely mouth breathing.

There is a built-in filter on the water supply so that may extend the life a bit but I don't know yet.

The light's aren't the super annoying injection laser diodes that I've seen on other models.

The vapor direction nozzle is nice because you can point the power and water alarm lights away from your bed.

I really like this humidifier. Last year I tried to use the "Honeywell HCM-6009 QuietCare 9-Gallon Console Humidifier with Air Washing Technology" and was disgusted by the poor quality of it. The thing started to smell like mildew after one week, so I cleaned the filter and it was okay for only one day. We returned it.

The sunpentown humidifier has an ion exchange filter, so it doesn't smell at all. Plus, it is SILENT!! Even on high, you cannot hear it AT ALL.

We use it in a large living room (twice the size of the recommended area) and it works just fine. Also, you can actually see the mist coming out. In the words of a previous reviewer, it really is like pea soup.

We use it on medium and the water tank lasts for about 12-14 hours. If you use it in a smaller room, the low setting would work just fine, so it would last much longer.

The reason I only gave it four stars is because when the setting is on high, the water vapor coming out of the humidifier is so thick and heavy that most of it falls to the ground, getting everything damp and wet, and getting less moisture into the air. In fact, even on the medium setting, we have it set up on a countertop to maximize evaporation. This humidifier does not work well when placed on the floor.

We have had this humidifier for a few months now, and are very happy with it. Also, it looks very nice. It is not bulky and ugly like other humidifiers.

Honest reviews on SPT Dual-Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier

This is the best of the humidifiers I've purchased so far. The mist is extremely fine and the dual direction spout is handy. No irritating mineral deposit pads either. The litmus test will be how long the ionic filter actually lasts.

I've found that I only have to refill the unit once daily if I keep the humidity dial on a lower setting. If you want to raise the humidity, just be prepared to refill more frequently. Of interest is that the warm vapor setting results in vapor that isn't hot so much as luke warm. Still, it's better than cold vapor.

One special notation is that Amazon recommends combining this product purchase with the Protec Antimicrobial Cleaning Cartridges. However, the Protec instruction sheet contained in the package clearly instructs users to never use the product with ultrasonic humidifiers. Heads-up...

This unit got me through some very dry winter days. I'll list the pros and cons:

PROS:

1. It is thin and compact and can fit on a bedstand, unlike some of its big ugly hulking competitors.

2. It is almost completely silent!

3. The steam nozzle swivels so you can direct where it goes.

4. The translucent blue water chamber is nice for seeing the water level at a glance.

5. Finely adjustable mist levels, and hot/cold mist.

CONS:

1. The blue water chamber fills up from the bottom. So you have to take it off, turn it upside down and unscrew a cap in order to fill it up. Not a huge deal, but not the most convenient method either.

2. The entire unit has to be carried from the bottom since the blue water chamber merely sits on the top of the white section. Again, not a big deal once you have the unit where you want it.

3. The hot/cold mist didn't work for me. Maybe the heat element in mine is broken, but I didn't really feel the difference between the hot and cold settings. I didn't really care; cold mist was fine.

4. It's a little pricey as these devices go. But worth it, in my opinion.

Overall, a very nice unit.

UPDATE 2011: This unit is still going strong. It did start making some annoying gurgling noises, so I ran steaming hot water through both the top reservoir and the bottom piece (unplugged first, of course). This fixed the gurgling problem and also gave me a nice surprise: the hot mist feature, which never did anything before, started working! I clean it a little more often now in order to prevent future gurgling, and I put a ProTec antimicrobial cleaning cartridge in there monthly.

The vendor should be up front about the fact that these are knock-offs. They fit my humidifier (HCM-525), but are significantly thinner than the Honeywell filters I usually buy. More importantly, they are not bacteria-resistant like the name brand. After only two weeks of use, they are ready for the trash. It helps to flip them daily, but it's a pain in the butt.

If you're considering buying these to use in the HCM-525 humidifier, you would do better to buy the HAC-514 from the same vendor and cutting them down to size. They are the same quality (so-so), but at least they are thicker and much less expensive, so you won't feel like you paid too much for them.

I purchase these filters from Allergy Be Gone because once I purchase any type of humidifier from the big box stores, they quit carrying the filters. I am happy with the produce (it does its job), and Allergy Be Gone is reasonable in price and ships very iffeciently.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program My family and I recently moved into a rather musty home, so an air purifier certainly needed to do its thing. I'm happy to report this one worked very nicely without being overly noisy or taking up a lot of space. This particular model is for small spaces, but I found it truly takes care of small rooms. The air smells fresher, the machine is easy to work, and I enjoy the time and power customization. Yes, I'd say the air is easier to breathe and all the musty smells are gone! I also brought this over to my parents' when their basement flooded, leaving some nasty mildew odors about. This helped! The model is also very attractive in its white simplicity and would match any decor if you don't feel like hiding it in a corner. Does a fine job!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program We've got this set up in our home office. It is quiet enough to not bother my partner while he works; he works from home. The various speeds help deal with different issues like wet dog smell or bursts of pollen. My partner isn't a germ-o-phobe, but he is aware of germs. The ultraviolet light has given him a nice sense of comfort. It's also a great size. Our office is a fairly small room, so floor space is at at a premium. This unit tucks into a small, unused area easily.

A warning: A couple of the filters inside the unit come wrapped in plastic, so be sure you go through them to remove those layers before using. Also, one of those filters is a carbon filter. It is a bit messy, so handle carefully unless black powder doesn't bother you.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The allergy sufferer in the family swears by air purifiers. I can never tell whether or not they do anything. On the plus side, the Luma Comfort is 1/4 the size of our previous purifier and about 1/2 as loud. This one is meant for a smaller sized room, so keep that in mind when considering a purchase.

Honest reviews on Luma Comfort AP170W PureClean HEPA Air Purifier with 5-Stage

Our son suffers from bad seasonal allergies especially in the Spring so we opted to put this unit in his bedroom. After just a day there is a noticeable difference. He and my daughter both say their noses are less stuffy and you can actually tell a difference in the air in his room vs the rest of the house. A+++

This is a really nice air purifier for under $200. I was looking for something that had a bit more than a basic HEPA filter, and wanted to stay away from an ionizer as well they give me a headache for whatever reason. This unit seemed to fit the bill, with four different filters as well as a UV light. After using it for a few weeks, you really can notice a difference in the room.

We put this unit in our bedroom as my allergies as well as my wife's have been acting up a bit lately. We also have a large dog, which doesn't exactly help the issue. After running this overnight for a few nights, we've definitely noticed a difference. It's relatively quiet on the lowest level, which is nice for the bedroom. A few times we've turned it up to high during the day when no one's around. Obviously, there's a bit more fan noise on the highest level, but it's still nothing outrageous. The timer really comes in handy during the day as well, as we'll run it for 2-3 hours at a time and don't have to worry about coming back to shut it off.

One word of advice a couple of the filters inside the unit are wrapped in plastic, so make sure you unwrap them before using it the first time. It's really easy to do, which is nice because I'm sure I'll have to get in there again to change the filters here in the next 6 months or so. So far, it's just been a great addition to the house, and I hope it keeps up!

Does what it is supposed to! Hold the lid up 3/4 of the way and let it drop! If it SLAMS its NOT air tight! If it closes w/ just a lie plunk, it will seal as it is SUPPOSED to. This one seals perfectly! SO worth the $$$!

Humidor is nicely constructed, holds a lot of cigars, and looks great. However, you will need to add a moisture source for optimal seasoning. I put a small vial of water inside.

The box is good, it does make "that" sound when you drop the lid to indicate it shuts tight. However, the humidifier included is not enough. I had to order one of those Humidor Humidifier Drymistat Tubes.

The hydrometer is off by 20%! I did the wet towel test, and instead of about 95%, it was measuring 75%. I couldn't calibrate it. At the back there is a slot in which you can put a tiny screwdriver, but as soon as I turn it, it comes right back to what it was. So I did another test I got my hydrometer out that I use during the winter time for the baby's room and put it in the box, and again it was off by 20%. Which is OK, I can remember to add 20 to the reading. But definately do a test to know how much yours is off!

Other than that the box is very pretty and well-made, and the devider is a nice feature.

Honest reviews on Prestige Import Group Chalet Cherry Cigar Humidor

my husband loves the hygrometer that comes with it. he had the box seasoned (whatever the hell that is) in 6 hours.
