these are fine except for the seam that is glued will let loose prematurely. Accually some of them were not even glued straight where the belt would end up to one side and get all bound up and stop turning. I ended up having to re-cut most of them and reglueing them, then they work great.

Ordered two units. Had to ship one back when lowest speed setting didn't work. While 2 orders is admittedly a tiny sample, that is a 50% failure rate.

If you live in the southwestern US you'll probably be familiar with a swamp cooler. Although this unit is not advertised specifically to cool the air, it's basically the same design: water is drawn up into a filter to saturate it and then a fan blows (or in this case sucks) air through the filter leading to evaporation. It sucks dry warm air in through the back of the unit and through the filter and sends damp cooler air out the top. This unit is all plastic and as a result some parts are a bit flimsy but it looks fine and gets the job done.

The only real design issue is the float. The float attaches to the filter with one end sitting in the bottom of the unit with the water. The other end of the float mechanism extends up into the electronics of the unit inside the hood where it triggers a little switch. This is a simple and effective method to automatically turn the unit (fan) off when the water runs out. The problem is that when you take the hood off the unit (to clean for example) when you replace the hood it is somewhat tricky to position the float correctly so that it moves freely with the water level and properly triggers the switch. Removing the float mechanism entirely would disable the unit since it only turns 'on' when the float is 'up' and triggering the switch.

You may also get confused when the unit initially won't turn 'on' as the water is coming out of the bottle and filling the empty base of the unit. The water has to get up to a certain level in the bottom of the unit before the float will rise high enough to trigger the switch allowing the fan to turn on which can take a few minutes.

Depending on how you use it, the float may not be a problem for you. We empty and clean the unit and filter regularly as per the directions to prevent mold and bacteria growth. The downside is that we also frequently run into the float position and refill delay (Did I position the float wrong again or is not full enough yet? Maybe the fan control doesn't work like that one we had to send back?!)

Like others, I was tired of constantly filling and cleaning my console humidifier. The Aprilaire 360/350 is the only whole-house unit I could find that works independently of a forced air heating system, so it was the only choice for my home with radiant floors. Buyers should be aware that Aprilaire requires installation to be performed by an HVAC professional, or else the warranty is void. I chose to install it myself, and the money saved on professional installation would easily pay for a replacement unit if ever needed.

The first thing I noticed after unpacking the unit was a manufacture date nearly 3 years prior. They must not sell many of these. The second thing I noticed was a screw in the bottom of the box. It was one of the motor mounting screws which had fallen out, and the nut was missing. This screw also connects a ground wire to the case, so the wire was hanging loose inside the unit. I located a replacement nut and reinstalled the screw. Every other screw holding the unit together was also loose.

I had no problems with installation. I discarded the self piercing saddle valve that comes with the unit and instead used a tee fitting to tap off a supply line from a nearby sink. The drain tube must not have a "trap" where it exits the unit or it will overflow. The outlet grille is almond or ivory color, I painted mine white but that's just my personal preference. They should offer them in different colors, the plastic grille is somewhat difficult to paint properly.

Upon powering up the humidifier for the first time I was surprised to find that the fan is a lot quieter than my Holmes console humidifier, but I also noticed that it doesn't move much air. More on that later. There is a fairly loud hissing noise from the water supply line, similar to the sound of a dishwasher filling. The water flow rate is controlled by an orifice in the outlet of the solenoid valve. The orifice causes a hissing noise as the water is forced through it. I thought I'd get used to it, but after one day I couldn't stand it any more. I removed the orifice and installed a pressure regulator on the supply line. This completely eliminated the noise, and by adjusting the pressure I am able to limit the amount of water that gets wasted by going down the drain. Some excess water flow is required in order to get a decent amount of humidity out of the unit. 5 psi puts it right about where it was with the orifice and full pressure, but without the hissing noise. I removed the "Filter Check" gauge from my old console humidifier and stuck it on the outlet grille of the 360 so I can monitor the effects of my changes. It's a direct indicator of the moisture level of the air coming out of the humidifier.

So on to the lack of airflow. I can tolerate a bit more fan noise and my warranty was already void, so I began looking into a faster fan motor. Upon inspecting the motor to find the specs, I noticed the fan blade was not aligned with the shroud. It was set back too far to be effective. This may be done intentionally at the factory to limit fan noise. I moved the fan forward and noticed an immediate improvement in airflow and as a result it also makes slightly more noise as the air exits the grille. It now moves enough air to pull the closet door closed, which it didn't do before. I need to leave the door cracked open until I can install an inlet grille in the door.

Aprilaire says this unit requires hot water. They recommend installing a small dedicated water heater if the main hot water source is too far away to supply consistent 120 degree water temp. I hooked into a hot water line with 9 feet of 1/4" copper tubing, but the total distance to the heat source is much further. The small amount of flow that this unit uses is not enough to sustain hot water in the pipes unless a sink or shower is running, so 99% of the time it is getting cold water. It still works fine. I'm sure it would work better with hot water, but it does work with cold water. When it is getting hot water, the excess water going down the drain is cold so there is not much energy wasted on heating the water, most of the heat is put into the air.

The manual humidistat that's supplied with the unit is just adequate. It seems to have about a 5-7% RH differential. Maybe this is normal for humidifiers or maybe it's done to prevent short cycles. I have two separate hygrometers in different parts of the room about 15 feet away from the humidifier. With a setpoint of 35% the humidity will drop as low as 28% and then the unit will run until it reaches 33-35%. I think a 1 or 2% differential would be more comfortable. My console humidifier did a much better job of maintaining a constant humidity as long as I remembered to fill it. I will be upgrading to a combo thermostat/humidistat with automatic outdoor temp reset.

Overall I am pretty pleased with the Aprilaire 360. I think build quality should be improved (loose screws, poorly positioned fan blade). It's a very simple device and I believe it's greatly overpriced, but there is no alternative that I'm aware of. For the price I think they should include a high quality humidistat that displays current humidity level, and different colored grilles. I love what the unit does, but I rated it three stars because of high price and lack of quality control.

I've been dealing with humidity in the teens in the Eastern Sierra at 8,000 feet for over a year. I couldn't sleep, my nose always hurt, my skin cracked and itched, everyone agreed something needed to be done.

My place is about 2,300 sq. ft and the humidity shot to more than 50% in the first 12 hours of operation. This unit is basically perfect regarding the size, cost and ease of installation. A professional should be able to install this unit in less than three hours. I would recommend this unit to my grandmother and probably will.

Since I gave this unit 4 stars instead of 5 my ONLY complaint is that the unit is a little loud. The fan is strong but not silent. I will contact the manufacturer and update this review based on their suggestion. However depending on the location where you install this unit it might not matter. Additionally this fan noise might be consistent with the noise of most other units so take my comments with a grain of salt.

I installed the unit near our main intake vent for our heating system to spread the humidity throughout the house when using the fan or the heating system.

I am glad I bought this unit. I was so tired of daily filling, draining and cleaning my console humidifier, and the crusty white stuff that accumulated on it (not to mention the slime mold that grew in the tank if I didn't clean it with bleach.) This unit connects to your hot water line and to a drain, so it supplies its own water and continuously cleans itself. There's no crusty white stuff, you just set the humistat and forget about it. It's fairly quiet, too.

Though the unit is fairly small (about 13 inches square) and not heavy (15 lbs.) it's more than adequate to completely humidify our 1600 sq. ft. home.

I don't know about energy usage or reliability because I just started using it, but so far the performance has been wonderful.

Like other reviewers, I also ordered this believing I was purchasing a Xikar product. What I actually received was a bottle of "Stogie's Propylene Glycol 50/50" solution. I'm sure one PG 50/50 is about the same as another, but that's hardly the point. Advertising one product and sending out something completely different is unacceptable business practice.

One more note, the bottle was wrapped up in a plastic bag, and quite a bit of the product has leaked out in transit. Paid for 16 ounces, received maybe 14.

The post office had to place the package in a plastic bag because the lid on the bottle was loose spilling 25% of the liquid by the time it was delivered. The package was saturated. I left packaging feedback (with photos), seller feedback and feedback to Amazon around 3 weeks ago. I am still waiting for a response. I'm sure the product is everything it is supposed to be, but I sure didn't get my money's worth.

Just so everybody is aware, according to Xikar their solution is NOT a 50/50, it's their own formula as they say 50/50 is too viscous for many bead products. Is it true? Who knows... But if you believe that's true then none of the cheap generic 50/50s are going to fulfill your needs.

Honest reviews on Xikar Large Cigar Humidor Solution Propylene Glycol 16 Ounces

I originally purchased this because it had a picture of the Xikar bottle. When I received the order, it was actually "Stogie's". I talked with the vendor, who said that Amazon regularly has substitute items when looking for a specific brand. I have since found this to be the case. The seller was actually very nice and easy to get along with, and was more than happy to allow me to return the product. I decided to give it a shot.

I found the solution to be a very good one for a 50/50, but I purchase Xikar *because* it isn't 50/50. It is a slightly better blend which tends to leave less residue and which tends to not change each time you add it to the humidifier.

Now is where I reach what I am torn about. They have since fixed the picture issue, and the correct picture *and* description are now there. I think that the product is very good for what is being sold . . . but the item title is now even worse than the formerly-mistaken picture. It is now being advertised as Xikar (the title now reads "Xikar Large Cigar Humidor Solution Propylene Glycol 16 Ounces". The picture confusion from before is easily explained, but I have a bit of a hard time believing that Amazon forcefully changed the title after it was put in.

So in conclusion, I would give the product five stars for being a good product, and I took away 3 stars for it essentially being a bait-and-switch. If you clicked on the product and are aware of the fact it is not Xikar (and the misleading title doesn't bother you), then I would definitely encourage you to purchase it. Otherwise I would purchase somewhere else, like this one: Xikar Humidifier Solution 16 oz..

I probably should have read the other reviews before absent-mindedly purchasing this product at three AM. However, I did not, and they are correct. The product I received is not as pictured, and lacking the ability to test it for purity and content, I intend to send it back for a refund. Frankly, I just don't know if I can trust this label on the bottle of clear fluid that may or may not be "99.9% pure" and "made with 100% pure distilled water" (which is technically impossible).

Guys, at this price, just go to your nearest tobacconist, and buy the real deal. You won't save any money, but you run the stupid risk of destroying some cigars with this mystery fluid that looks like it came out of someone's garage, and the labels that were clearly printed on someone's inkjet.

It's expensive but you HAVE to have it for the humidifier to work in any kind of efficient manner. This is the best price I found.

I had to replace mine, this small piece of simple looking plastic is similar to a "T" used in aquarium plumbing... but 10 times the price. I decided I could use some kind of fastener to hold it in place, like a Red Green fix. Long story short, didn't work and the hose shifted slightly over a matter of hours causing a leak and a puddle to form around the back half of the furnace.

My advice, it's not overpriced compared to having water damage from trying to jury rig a cheap fix.

I accidentally threw this away when I discarded the old humidifier pad and a replacement was supposed to be over 200 dollars. I was able to putchase it here for about 70 dollars, and it works like a champ. I can't tell if there is any difference from the OEM.

I have a aprilaire 500 humidifier that uses this size pad and due to size restriction of area of furnace had to use 1 size smaller humidifier than I wanted (right on edge to use bigger) I bought this pad locally first and it is more efficient at raising to humidity in the house than the metal OE one. Only issue is will have to be replaced more often since it uses a fiber type pad which if you try to clean will fall apart but is small price to pay for better efficiency of unit.

My manual states this is the recommended and most efficient waterpad for my humidifier. I couldn't find this one locally a few years ago when I stocked up on waterpads at Lowes. This year, my humidity was dropping daily as winter set in. After these arrived, I put one in immediately, and started seeing improvement in humidity within a day. It's now the coldest month (February) and my humidifier is still keeping up, thanks to these waterpads.

Found this third-party replacement after trying to find the filters in the stores. It fit just fine ... until it eventually crumbled after a year. My factory filter was good for 4 or 5 years with yearly cleanings. This one only lasted a year. More expensive than buying replacement from Lasko directly, but I haven't see what they ship (I am sure not the one that came with it originally).

does the job. Just buy several, one for each year.
