Have recently had to have a humidifier in my bedroom at night to help with sinus problems in the winter. Wanted to have that same benefit at work, but did not want big, bulky or drippy machines. Received this at Christmas and I love it! It really cranks out lots of cool vapor mist with no noise and absolutely no condensation on the desk or papers. Everyone has commented on how cute it is. I got LASIK and got a nice big humidifier for my home to help battle the dry eye discomfort that comes with getting LASIK and I never had a problem at home but at work was a different story. It was so dry at my work place that my eyes would get so dry that they would start to have a burning feeling so I bought this cute little humidifier to sit at my desk and it is great!! It is nice and small perfict for sitting on the desk. It is so quite you forget it is even there. I bought it for my eyes but have also noticed an improvement in my breathing, my nose doesn't get as plugged up and I see a difference in my skin I don't need to hardly use lotion or chapstick anymore it is so nice!!

The spring/cotton/sensor didn't work well after a refill. The stream of mist turned into puffs of mist. I tried replacing the cotton nothing...I have to tilt the lid to make it work (yes it was opened. It was the only way the sensor door stays all the way open). The sensor was not working correctly. When the little slider is open all the way, it works great. If they can improve on the product, I think it will be awesome. Great concept, bad parts & lots of typos in the instruction.

My office manager ordered about 5 of these for those of us who wanted some around our static-heaven office. We all squealed with delight at the great little "cup" design. Setting it up was an hour of fun for all, as we had to muddle through "Engrish" instructions and do a little tailoring for each machine to get it to function properly. The tricks that worked for some (gently poking the silver top where the mist was supposed to appear from with a pencil tip, jiggling the plastic shaft that holds the filter, etc.) didn't work for others and one simply didn't work straight out of the box, no matter what we did (I believe we got a working replacement for the crap one). Mine worked excellently, pouring out a fine, cold mist for just under 3 months, and then abruptly stopped, with the cup still full of water. The replacement refill didn't start it going again and none of the previous tricks worked. After that, when plugged in, the lid would heat up scarily, though nothing else would happen. Honestly, the cup design is brilliant, but you get what you pay for (I think my office manager snagged them for about $10 each) and if you really want something that will function efficiently for a long time, this is not the product.

After reading all the reviews I was hesitant to buy this product but still decided to give it a shot.

The only positive about this product, if it would have worked, is the look of it without looking inside. I received the product, followed the very hard to understand instruction with poor grammar and spelling errors, and tried it on 3 different computers but this little cup just won't even turn on! I would have to say this company probably has zero QA process so it's kind of hit or miss, and I'm joining the zero star group.

Wish the next person buying it good luck...or just stay away from it!

I received this humidifier 2 weeks ago after searching for a decent humidifier to replace the one i owned that was famous for robbing me in replacements filter, etc. fees. This thing fits the bill. The design is great, it's super quiet, and gets the job done. In choosing this product i read all the reviews. The reviews that made me hesitant to purchase this were the complaints that said: a)that the furniture on and around the humidifier got wet all the time, b)that the machine did not cut off if empty, as advertised, c)that the machine is hard to clean, and d) that it makes a lot of noise.

With hesitation, I purchased the product in good faith.

I was immediately pleased by the design. I read the owner's manual even though i thought it all was a "no brainer". The manual actually explained a)how to adjust the mist as to not wet the furniture around it, and b)that the machine will turn off when empty, but the light on the device will remain lite...obviously the part those that said the machine did not turn off failed to read, and c)how the machine is easy to clean with a vinegar or chlorine solution.

Cleaning is easy. I recommend using the bleach solution as bleach will kill anything..not to mention it also gets rid of the discoloration.

Lastly, the sound the comes from the machine is very subtle, but when u hear it, it is exactly like the soothing sounds of a filter running on a fish tank. It actually helped me sleep... having this white, very subtle noise.

I like this thing. My skin and nose are happy.

I hope this clarifies some of the ambiguity i found in the other reviews....

I purchased the Crane cool mist humidifier in Dec'10 and have used it, with great success, for many months. With all the negative reviews (about 20%) I almost didn't purchase this machine. But I'm glad I did, because it works really well for what it is: a mid size/capacity humidifier.

First of all: ***this humidifier has a 2.3 gallon per day maximum output, with a .9 gallon tank.*** Amazon's initial title for this (and many other humidifiers) mentions daily output capacity rather than tank size... this may be confusing, although the correct specs are prominently listed on the Amazon page fifth bullet point in the "product features" section. As for Crane (the manufacturer), their package clearly states a 2.3 gallon daily output, and .9 gallon tank size... The reviewers complaining about the "misleading name" should try emailing Amazon suggesting a title change on their website... instead of writing a 1 or 2 star review of the product. That would be more helpful and more fair.

As for the product itself:

A few buyers obviously received defective machines; this has to be expected on some level with any manufacturer.

But having read over the negative reviews, I realized that most of the complaints were due to improper use of the machine.

It is essential to read the instruction manual and use the machine as intended by design. Doing so will avoid the pitfalls described by most of these 1-2 star review writers. For reference, I have addressed their most common complaints below:

1) White dust buildup in the room: use filtered or distilled water. This is important if you have hard tap water. (85% of American homes do.) I run my tap water through a Brita filter; the exchange ion resin lowers the concentration of calcium carbonates, accordingly softening tap water. It also helps keep the humidifier cleaner by removing organic impurities, and I have had no white dust buildup. ***If your water is particularly high in mineral content, you should use distilled water, or else opt for a vaporizer-type (humidifying) machine, which creates water vapor free of white dust.***

2) Limited effectiveness: you are trying to humidify too large a room. In my 500 square foot living room level the machine helps a little; in my 150 square foot bedroom the machine is more than adequate.

3) Height of machine: the manual directs you to put the humidifier *at least* a few feet off the ground; there's no reason you can't place it even higher up if you wish. Doing so will disperse the mist more effectively.

4) Machine runs out of water: try turning it down to about 2/3 power instead of full power. The machine is practically noiseless at this setting and the water tank if actually filled to the rim will last at least 8-10 hours.

5) Machine makes bubbling noise on high: see #4 above.

6) Wet area forms immediately around humidifier: you have the machine turned up too high for the conditions in your room. This is explained in the instruction manual: you need to make sure the mist isn't falling down onto the surfaces around the machine; otherwise moisture will accumulate on those surfaces. Turn the power dial down until the vapor stream is fully evaporating in the air.

7) Machine leaks: Take care that the water tank fits snugly into place, with no gaps. Also, make sure you have the clear rubber ring that fits inside the tank cap. During my initial setup, this little (1 1/2" diameter) ring came loose and rolled away, and I almost didn't notice. The ring ensures a tight seal on your water tank cap; without it, I'm pretty sure the machine would leak.

8) Machine gets moldy: you are not following the correct cleaning routine, as described in the manual. You need to empty and rinse out the tank daily, and empty the bottom part of the unit too. Once a week you should use a white vinegar/warm water mixture in the tank and bottom of unit (see manual).

I hope this was helpful. If my humidifier breaks down I will certainly update this review.

This humidifier DOES work in that it does create a nice full water vapor stream HOWEVER, thats as far as it goes functionally. Let me explain:

1. Starting with the fact that the handle on the tank actually says: "Do NOT use handle when tank is full" yes, I kid you not, this is what it says ON the handle itself why put in a handle that you cant use? As a result you have to carry the tank with both hands.

2. It has a light that cannot be turned off, so good luck sleeping w this thing in your bedroom.

3. It has to be refilled CONSTANTLY I did it morning and night.

4. The tank will NOT stand up due to the awkward shape when off the unit, so to fill it, you have to stand there holding it under the faucet.

5. The way its designed, the tank drips every time you take it out to refill a real pain.

6. But here is by far the worst aspect Cleaning it is a NIGHTMARE The base is full of little nooks and crannies that you have to get to w a Q-tip its full of odd angles, grooves, etc. so good luck trying to get the gunk that accumulates off every couple of days.

7. It has NO antibacterial prevention WHATSOEVER, no filter, no uv light, no silver ion exchange, nothing. If theres something in the water or if something starts breeding in all the crevices youll just breath it right in.

8. The TANK ITSELF is impossible to clean due to the small opening but widening interior and the central tube where the water vapor comes out...good luck cleaning that, you have to work a cloth or paper towel or whatever by pushing and pulling it through up and down the tube.

I actually bought it here at Amazon and went by the very reviews you probably read and, seeing it has mostly positive ones, I decided to buy it. Am I the only one that sees this humidifier as the worst possible design? How on EARTH is it getting so many good reviews? But dont take MY word for it, go to a store before ordering it here so you can see it with your own eyes first hand dont judge it by the "cool look"; actually get it out of the box, pull up the water reservoir and see whos telling the honest truth here.

I have used this for over a year and this is a wonderful product. It has a humidifier control that lets you vary the room humidity between 35 and 80% ... this number is the machine's goal for the room. It gives you the relative humidity in the room. It can be set for cool or warm mist, it has a sleep timer and cool blue 'mood light'. It puts out alot of mist, almost like a smoke machine in a club. My only complaint is the filters are next to impossible to find. They are Nano Silver SF-400 filters, and they need to be changed every 6 months. I can't find them anywhere other than H-Mart.

I've had this humidifier for over 2 years now, and it is seriously top of the line. It's more expensive, but also far superior than any other store-bought humidifiers for several reasons:

Dual directions for the humidifier to point its "spray" with the spouts.

A vast array of humidity to choose from, from 40-80%.

A "warm" humidity function.

Night light.

Low, Med, High amount of humidity adjustments in "spray", so you can have tons of water released, or a more moderate amount. Useful for overnight use!

The only problem--I wish I can afford more than one! :)

It's a nice, small-footprint humidifier. I've never used the diffuser (which is just a tiny cup in the "grill"--nothing special), but it works fine as a basic humidifier. It's very easy to clean, and difficult to tip over accidentally. There are just two drawbacks: it sounds like those $15 "boiler" humidifiers that you can pick up at a drugstore, and you have to refill it twice a day if you're running it 24-7. The blue light is a bit bright, but you turn it to the wall and problem solved. It's a good little unit.

I feel the need to review this product since it only had one when I ordered it..

I got this unit used (like new) at a very good price. For the price I paid, I'd say it's an excellent buy. I've never owned a humidifier before, but I'm a picky consumer and it simply works well. At the full 'new' price, though, it may not be the best bang for your buck.

I was most concerned about noise and leakage. This unit does make some soft noise.. the bubbling noise. Fortunately, the noise it makes blends into the background nicely so it is unlikely to disturb your sleep. It's quite a pleasant sound, actually, like a light rainfall. I also haven't seen any leakage yet.

Like the other reviewer said, the power light is pretty bright, so you might want to tape over it or something. The 2-hr timer is really useful when you don't want it running til it goes dry. The auto-shutoff seems to work properly -it turns off and an indicator light goes on when the tank is low. Note that this unit only has one power level.. you can't adjust the vapor output.

It has an attractive appearance.. minimalistic and unassuming. The only thing that bothers me is that it's pretty much 100% plastic, but that's probably the case with most small humidifiers. I do smell something which I assume is the plastic.. though I'm hoping the scent will diminish with use.

This is a decent humidifier for the money.

Pros: The tank holds enough water to get through the night. Low water indicator and water level window are nice features. The tank is about impossible to spill while filling and replacing. My wife likes the diffuser. The timer feature is nice, though I do not use it often.

Cons: The blue light illuminating the power switch is a bit annoying though. It's very bright and not cool when you are trying to sleep. I turned it to face the wall.

We bought this unit to help humidify our house in the winter. Past experiences with cool mist humidifiers were poor having to clean mysterious brown gunk off the electronic innards was disturbing. If you're like me, you'll pretend you don't see the brown gunk. This strategy works great until the gunk becomes a pulsating biohazard that threatens to move about on its own. Warm mist humidifiers don't seem to have this problem. The Vicks Vaporizer looked a bit wimpy, but with itchy skin and static electricity zapping about, anything was better than nothing. Besides, it's cheap.

First, the unit puffs out warm odorless steam as advertised. The manual says you have to add salt to the water to really get the steam going and warns vaguely about blowing fuses if you get carried away. This made me curious, so I got out my Kill-A-Watt power meter (very cool gadget by the way) to see how much juice this thing used. Turns out it REALLY matters how much salt you add. The vaporizer was puffing steam like crazy, and using over a kilowatt of power. I emptied and refilled the water, adding the maximum recommended amount of salt (1/4 teaspoon). Steam production was still fine at a more reasonable 450 Watts.

Since I had the power meter hooked up, I wondered just how efficiently the Vicks produced steam. 450 Watts running all night is enough to want my money's worth. So, I performed a test. I filled the tank with exactly 192 ounces of room temperature water, added the salt, and plugged it into the power meter for the night. By morning it was done and the power meter read 0 Watts. There was still quite a bit of water in the tank, which I measured to be 50 ounces. The power meter said 3.15 kilowatt-hours (kWh) had been used. So, it took 3.15 kWh to vaporize 192 50 = 142 ounces of room temperature water. Is this reasonable? I calculated the energy required to vaporize 142 ounces of water as:

Energy to raise 142 oz from 21.1 C to 100 C = 0.37 kWh

Energy to boil 142 oz at 100 C = 2.53 kWh

Total = 2.9 kWh

So, the Vicks is about 92% energy efficient. Not bad.

Our electricity costs 8.3 cents per kWh, so the vaporizer costs me 26 cents per tank.

I'm very happy with the Vicks considering the price. Rather than spend much more on a big unit, I'll just buy a couple more of these.

To summarize:

The Good

* Uses no energy when tank runs low. Good for safety and economy.

* 92% energy efficient (about 26 cents of electricity per tank).

* Except for the steam itself, no outside surfaces get hot.

* Has a little light on top so you don't bump it in the dark.

The Bad (minus 1 star)

* Can't vaporize a full 1.5 gallons. Leaves about a quarter tank.

* Black particles appear in the tank. They don't stick to anything and rinse away easily. I suspect these are some electrolytic byproduct from running electricity through the salty water.

I've been using these for 4 years now. I've purchased four and only pitched one (though I'm about to replace the second one I purchased because it's not putting out the steam it's 4 years old). (I number them so I know which older/younger.)

Pro:

They're cheap! I can purchase 10 of these for what it would cost to purchase a nice ultrasonic humidifier.

No gross filters. No funky chemicals.

When it doesn't work or gets gross, I'll pitch it.

Supposedly warm mist grows less bacteria than cool mist (verify this, I read it several years ago and may be wrong).

Cleaning is easy. Warm vinegar removes the scale that builds up over time.

Con:

I have to refill them about 3 times a day.

Though the company does not recommend it, I pretty much run them 24/7 when at home. I unplug them before leaving the house no need to start a fire.

Here in Nevada the humidity is extremely low. With three of these running my home feels warmer and the humidity gets up to 33% (still really low). The humidity helps both my skin and my sinuses.

We've had a few of these for years. Don't run them all the time, but when we use them they work perfectly. Any sputtering is caused by the quality of the water. You do have to rinse out the reservoir every so often. If the water gets too low or too gunky it will sputter. Completely expected in a vaporizer. The night light feature is nice.

I used to use these humidifiers every night, and they do put out a lot of nice warm moisturebut they are a pain to fill, a pain to clean, and with my water I have to add salt. After a while the output goes down and it starts to bubble/overboil and spit. Don't use this for an everyday humidifier, I never would for everyday, but I would spend the 12 bucks to get one for a week or two's use if I got sick. I do not know if a cool mist humidifier like the one I just bought would do so well for a cold.

The Vicks models are cheap to buy and cheaply made...not for long term or heavy duty use.

There is an area next to the night light on top of the unit where you can add medicated/scented oil to be mixed in with the steam.

Pros:

I am very sensitive to noise when sleeping so I have been searching for a very quiet humidifier. I have bought 5 humidifiers, all different brands and prices (all more expensive than this one), but they were all too noisy for me.

It is easy to clean. I get hard water in my area, but the mineral does not stick to the tub, so I can just rinse it out. When I opened up the unit trying to clean the internal components (not recommended by the manufacturer), I noticed the electrodes (used to heat the water) are made from some ceramic-like material, and the mineral does not deposit on them as much (other humidifiers have stainless steel electrodes or plates that seem to collect mineral). I was able to use a spoon to scrape off some mineral on the electrodes and pour out the loose flakes of mineral that are trapped inside the electrodes' containment area. I normally clean out the mineral every 6 months (and I use this humidifier every night).

Cons:

No shut off timer. It shuts off automatically when water gets to a minimum level. If you want it on only for a couple of hours, instead of all night, just pour in less water.

My humidor would not keep up on the humidity. It would fall down into the 30s before I decided I needed to do something about it. My humidor is a 150 cigar capacity so I figured this would be suffice. After about a week, the humidity level has only gone up to 55. I am using the mixture that they said would bring humidor up to optimal 6-70%. So far, no where close to where it should be. Kind of disappointed as of now. It's better than the Sears "panless" we bought several years ago. Decent build quality for what it is. Very easy to install/assemble. Comes with everything needed to install. Handy window to see how the pad is doing. Am using additive to reduce or prevent calcification of the pad, we'll see how that goes. It says can be installed in a place without a drain but ... I wouldn't do that. I does have a built-in overflow drain in the pan so they've clearly planned on overflow. Comes with hose to get between that and the drain. Whacky press-fit drain cup feature. Never had to press-fit a DIY thing before. Fill mechanism is a pretty decent looking float valve. The Sears used a solenoid valve that got so hot it would burn skin.

Installation took a little longer than expect, but overall things went well. No problems at all with the installation. It was even easy to connect up to my HVAC control board; however, you don't have to do that if you don't want. Some people complained that the directions recommended connecting the overflow to a floor drain if installing into a finished room. Well, I have it in a finished room but I don't have a floor drain. I instead ran the overflow tub into the little water pump that sits beside my HVAC system. This will work just as well and the water will be pumped out if there is ever an issue. I'm so glad to have all the little room humidifier out of the house that I had to refill twice a day in the winter. Plus this product is Made in the USA. As least when I bought it, it was.

Overall this unit was pretty easy to install. Cutting the sheet metal was probably the hardest. All you really need is a good pair of tin snips, drill, 3/8" bit, 1/4" driver, and misc. basic hand tools. The directions were very easy to follow. You do need some kind of floor drain to run the overflow to. If you don't have a drain you can install a condensate style pump to a drain location. You could also install it without overflow protection...you are just taking a chance it could make a big mess. I bet if installed correctly and maintained you will never need the overflow protection. I didn't use the bypass provided flex duct. It wasn't long enough to go about 3ft with 90's. I used another similiar piece of flex. I also suggest purchasing a digital humidity sensor to install in the conditioned space. The humidity control device you install on the return duct does not give a digital readout. It's just a dial with a comfort zone. Once you adjust it, you'll probably never need to mess with it.

For those who don't want to spend an extra 15min. of maintenance per year...don't buy one of these. The price was right for me and the replacement pads are only $6 on Amazon. Always have an extra one for the next year. The unit is a very simple concept...moving air across a wet wheel pad produces moist air..enough said.

UPDATE: Worked the winter season without any problems. While cleaning it out for the summer months, I did realize I had the roller frame side pieces installed incorrectly. Make sure the open ended side piece is opposite the motor housing side. This would explain the rubbing of the drum roller on the side of the water pan. This could be the reason other reviewers burned out their motors. It now moves freely. Can't believe I messed that up. I'm ordering my new roller pad for next season.

The unit functioned well in the first two years. I just dismantled it for cleaning and discovered that after just two seasons of use the two spring clips that hold the pad assembly together are badly rusted and about to fail. These should be made of stainless steel same as the axle, but instead they are carbon steel which is a totally unsuitable material for use in a water bath humidifier.

Now I have to go through the maddening exercise of trying to find replacement parts.

The HE120A is an excellent drum style humidifier and reasonably priced; much better quality than a previous drum type I once owned. With the exception of the overflow drain, the Honeywell is of good quality and intelligently designed.

I have owned all three types of furnace humidifiers at one time or other; steam, flow-through, and drum. Steam type are expensive, use a lot of electricity, and the water may not even boil unless your heating/blower cycles are long enough. Flow-through humidifiers waste an absurd amount of water.

The disadvantage of drum style is that you can get bacteria and scale build-up from stagnant water. To mitigate or eliminate this issue, use an in-line water filter on your humidifier water supply line to filter sediment/minerals, and use a flushing timer, which regularly drains your water reservoir, which is then refilled with fresh water. Periodic cleaning is a good idea too, but you won't need to clean as often if you use a filter and flushing timer. Beware of chemical treatments that may be more unhealthy than bacteria.

The viewing window on the enclosure is a great feature, and I was impressed that a whole roll of metal duct sealing tape was included in the kit (use the excess for sealing other areas of duct leakage). As previously mentioned, the design of the overflow protection drain is a bit lame. You must make sure that your reservoir pan overflow drain is carefully lined up with the "cup grommet" drain in the bottom of the humidifier enclosure, as it would be easy to have it misaligned. Test it out by pouring water down the overflow drain and check for leakage.

The instructions state that you can install the humidifier on the supply or return side; but keep in mind that if you install on the supply side directly above the furnace, this could be risky if you experience water leakage spilling into your furnace electronics.
