Let me begin by saying that I spent many many hours researching online and looking at units in stores. I knew that I wanted a small unit that had both a humidi-stat as well as an auto function. I purchased this humidifier nearly three weeks ago and it has met and exceeded all of my expectations.
I noticed, during my research, many people experienced issues with unusual smells or leaky water containers. People, read the instruction booklet that comes in the box and have reasonable expectations of the hardware. This unit is solid, perhaps a bit noisy on the high setting. The unit will run for 48 hours before needing to be refilled. I use this overnight and the runtime is about 8-10 hour per on-time ans it's days before I need to refill the tank. Also, the manufacturer has a program that you can sign up for and they will send you replacement filters on the schedule of your choosing and free shipping. What a deal.
I would recommend this humidifier.

I was surprised to find it does not shut off when empty. Don't got out of town, it will run forever.

It works well but the fan is much noisier than the older models. The earlier Vornado evaporative humidifiers have a larger tank and a quieter fan. This is lighter and smaller but needs refilling more often.

I'm pretty sure I have a defective humidifier. When I first purchased it I was pretty happy with it, I had to turn it off when watching movies etc. due to the low ambient noise which was fine and it did help the low humidity. In time however, the noise has increased and now 2 months later I will be buying a new humidifier and throwing this unit out because it is just too noisy. Sometimes if I give it a bit of a whack it will run quiet again for an hour or so but the sound of what can only be described as a pebble in a blender is just beyond grating. It is unfortunate since I find the design and size to be among the more workable humidifiers in a home interior.

We have a lodge style home, it gets very dry as soon as the heat comes on and we are soon sniffling and experiencing bloody noses. I usually get the ultrasonic type for the bedroom and put up with the white film and sputtering. We started using Vornado fans last year as a method to move air through the large, high ceiling spaces and were very satisfied. The dogs chewed the cord off the humidifier from last year and I thought I'd try this one. It is very nice but as I've read elsewhere and in the manual, it needs to be run full on until the house adapts. THe house is dry too and will soak up the atmospheric moisture until it is equal to the air. With the space and high ceilings I realized I will need another for the living room open area and leave this one in the bedroom. I am getting the larger size for the bedroom.Vornado HU1-0021-28 Whole Room Evaporative Humidifier I do not find it louder than most humidifiers but we also normally use 'a white noise' to sleep, which might give us a higher tolerance. Also, the lower settings are quieter, I imagine after you bring your room to proper moisture balance, you can reduce the settings, given our house, I am not sure that will ever be an option for us.
