The SPT SD-40E Energy Star 40 Pint Dehumidifier needs some assembly if you wish to use the continuous drain option. Connecting a garden hose to the back of the unit is not for the faint of heart. The garden hose can be connected to an exterior port but the port is connected the internal drain, over the bucket, by a flimsy plastic tube that is fitted to the drain and the exterior by friction fit. The supplied connector for the garden hose needs to be attached to the body of the dehumidifier but no hardware (small screws for plastic, one supposes) is supplied for this task. If the garden hose in not sufficiently tight the dehumidifier will leak water onto the floor. If you tighten the garden hose enough to get a good seal without securing the connector to the body of the dehumidifier then you risk dislodging the internal friction fit over the bucket. All this could have been avoided if the drain over the bucket was threaded for a garden hose. Then you could thread the garden hose inside body of the dehumidifier and secure it directly to the internal drain.

If you need a small-footprint dehumidifier, I strongly recommend. This "no-name" is actually a Danby I believe; or else, it's an exact copy as far as I can detect! I previously had a Danby, with great results. I use it in the basement and leave it on continuously. The continuous operation feature comes with a short plastic tube which makes connection to a garden hose easy.

Honest reviews on SPT SD-40E Energy-Star 40-Pint Dehumidifier

I purchased this dehumidifier through a big box store in March 2012 to replace a cheaper unit that only lasted 18 months. The SPT worked quite well for the summer and fall. I do not need to use the unit during the winter, so I unplugged it. When I plugged it back in this spring, the P2 (bucket full) light came on even though the bucket was completely empty. I thought it might be too cold in the basement for the unit to run, so I waited a few weeks. I still had the same issue. I tried taking the bucket out and replacing it, being careful that it was inserted correctly. I tried moving the tiny metal flap that is signals that the bucket is full. I tried cleaning the filters and vacuuming the vents. None of these helped.

This unit didn't even make a year. I was very disappointed.

UPDATE***** 2013

I contacted Sunpentown customer service even though it was a few days past warranty and they agreed to repair the unit under warranty. I just received it back and will try it out. Other than shipping it to my home instead of work address, they were easy to work with.

Update Aug 2013: The replacement unit I received is working fine. I've attached a drain hose this time to avoid wear and tear on the bucket area.

It does the job, just a little noisy. Great customer service.

This unit is about the right size, not too heavy (on wheels) and it gets the job done. However, it is also kind of noisy. I can only use it when I am away for work and turn it off before I go to bed. The noise comes from the fan, not the condenser, though. I have another De'Longhi 50-pint in my basement at home and this one in an apartment near my office. The smaller one makes more noise than the big one does.

I have this unit for a little more than 3 months now and it is a replacement unit. The first one was DOA because the sensor of water level kept sending the wrong signal to stop the operation. My wife called their customer service. They were very helpful, simply asked my wife some questions. Then they asked her to do some troubleshooting and decided the unit was not working. I discarded the original box so I was a little worry about the return shipping. They were willing to ship a new unit to me and all I have to do was to use the same box and ship it back (they also cover the returning shipping). They solved my problem without giving my wife any hard time. The replacement unit works well since then.

The control panel was kind of simple. You can set the desired humid by 5% increment (as low as 40%) or constantly run. It has 2-level fan speed (both are noisy). It has a drain outlet but no pumps so you have to keep it near a drain to use that function. In my case it is not important because it was a small apartment and I always keep it in the bathroom or kitchen.

I would give it a 5-star if it could operates with less noise.
