I ordered this along with a Gurin mini & a DeLongihi regular dehumidifier/s. These are all for our vacation home in Florida. Dampness & mold is a big problem.

It's small and my original plan was to put it in the closet, but have it instead in my home office for now.

I plugged it in at 3:30 & came to look at it at 4:30. The 16oz tank had collected approx 1 tbsp of water. By next morning around 10a.m. it was up to 1/2 a cup. And today at 10:30 its 1 cup. I just measured it. The box says it collects approx 8oz of water per day @ 86F. It is end of April. The room temp probably gets up to 82F in the afternoons, but I think it will stay at collecting 1/2 a cup per day.

When I started this review, I had given it a 5 star. Reason for changing it to 4 stars is this.

I pulled the detachable water tray out to measure the quantity of water. Rightfully so, the tray has a cover with a hole in the middle where the water pours into. BUT!!!! No where does it say in the manual or labeled on the tray as to how to open to pour the water out from the tray. I thought the reason being, because it is quite obvious the full top cover had to be removed from the tray. Well, I tried that and it wouldn't budge. I broke a nail trying to pry it open. I heard a "tick' sound and didn't proceed any further, afraid I might break it. The top feels as if it should not be opened. I Finally just poured/shook the water out thru the small hole on the top.

My home office space is 250sq feet w/high ceiling (approx 14 ft) & carpeted. The unit is very quite. Its like a small fan running. Its not an eyesore either. I do like it, and will order a couple of more to put into my closets.

But If anyone knows ( I will write to the company as well) please let me know, how to pour the water out. I still think the top has to be pried open, but I'm not taking any chances.

Updated to 5 stars. received an email ( wow. in a matter of a few hrs) from what looks like a customer service, telling me how to remove the water. Its the black washer on top of tank that needs to be pulled.

I bought this for my 7 x 11 bathroom with no windows and vents, it is pretty damp in there. It works good and gets filled every 3-5 days. There is no longer a moisture problem in the slightest. It is whisper quiet and I simply love it.

Best Deals for Gurin Electric Compact Dehumidifier

Gurin Dehumidifier is 9" tall and 5.75" wide at the base. Its best feature is that it very quiet because it does not have a compressor, the worst feature is that it is not very effective in removing humidity. Both are not surprising and stem from the technology used in this unit. More on the technology itself at the end of the review, but first a few examples of what I observed in my use of this unit.

1. I originally hoped to use it in the bathroom while it is used for showers to keep the air dry, and to prevent fogging of mirrors. For several day, I turned on the unit each time the shower was taken, and turned off the unit when the shower was over. In that use the humidifier tank remained empty. Thinking back to how the Peltier method works as well to our Koolatron cooler (which also uses Peltier technology) I realized that short periods of usage do not work because the unit requires some time before it becomes effective. When we go on summer trips we pre-cool the cooler in the house for it to work well during the trips.

2. Then I took the dehumidifier to the basement, where we have a standard 50 Pint dehumidifier which fills its entire bucket in several days. I turned off the large dehumidifier, and left Gurin Dehumidifier there for 24 hours. After 24 hours the reservoir of the unit had 1 oz of water. I am attaching a photo of how much water it collected. After 24 hour of use the big electric plug of the unit got rather warm to touch, so I suspect it uses a significant amount of electricity.

Gurin dehumidifier is quiet and light because it uses thermoelectric method called Peltier. This method is most commonly used in cooling. In 1834 Jean Peltier noticed that when electrical current is applied to the junction of two different metals the heat is removed from one of the metals and transferred to the other. This is the main principal of thermoelectric cooling (and known as Peltier effect). The dehumidifier has cooling unit which is constructed from tiny metal cubes made from different metals. As electricity passes through the junctions between the cubes the heat is transferred and a fan vents the heat outside, a small amount of moisture is removed from the air in this process and condensed and this is the water we see in the reservoir of the unit.

So for this unit to work, it has to be turn on continuously, and it removes a fairly small amount of moisture from the air. It is very quiet, and if you need to remove only a small amount of humidity it will do an ok job.

I was provided this unit for a review and honest evaluation.

I got this because the exhaust fan in my bathroom only works with the light on. Two days after plugging this in, I noticed a huge difference in the room. It used to have a musty smell but hat has gone away.

Many people reviewing this dehumidifier are very disparaging of its usefulness. However, the unit is less than 12 inches tell and uses very little power. Of course, it won't pull 5 gallons of water out of the air per week. This unit performs better than I expected it would. Humidity in a room that is about 12x14 foot room averaged 75 % RH at about 75 degrees F average temp (High was 82% and low of 69%). The temperature has remained the same and after 2 weeks of usage, we have emptied the tank (holds 2 cups) 7 times (it was full each time we emptied it). Our average humidity has dropped from 75% humidity to 57% with a low of 52% humidity. This room adjoins our bathroom and collects a lot of humidity from the bathroom due to a non-operating exhaust fan. The machine functions better than I expected. Keep in mind that as this until removes moisture from the air, the RH goes down making the unit less efficient. In other words, this unit is more effective in higher humidity environments. When the unit operates, it lowers the humidity automatically lowering its efficiency. So, I don't know how much lower this machine will bring the humidity. I think 2 of these machines would bring our humidity in this room down below 45%. We will be buying a second in the near future. The noise factor is very low. It sits on a desk and the white noise produced is barely noticeable. The unit does not look of feel cheap. I think this unit could be produced for far less than it is sold for. Relatively high price is my only objection (but what consumer does not grumble about the price :-) $40 would be more reasonable in my opinion and would prompt me to buy 5 more of these for other rooms of my house. The quiet noise and small footprint of this machine makes it the obvious choice over any compressor-based unit any day.
